The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

The Mining Engineering Department at Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) has a new Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved program for Part 46 and Part 48 mine health and safety training. The training program will utilize the facilities and faculty from Montana Tech’s Mining Engineering and Safety, Health, and Industrial Hygiene departments to provide superior mine health and safety training to the mining industry. The faculty of each department includes professionals with experience in safety training and the mining industry. The training program incorporates adult learning techniques and extensive hands-on activities in all training modules. The instruction will exceed MSHA requirements. The resources available on Montana Tech’s campus will be utilized to strengthen the training program providing the mining industry with a world class mine health and safety training program.

The Lewis Street CSO Tunnel is an important element in the efforts of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) to improve the treatment of waste-water in the area. The tunnel is approximately 1,675m (5,500ft) long with a finished diameter of 2,600mm(102inches). 116m (380ft) of tunnel was constructed in soil with the balance being in lime-stone rock. Excavation was with a 3,700 mm (12ft) diameter Jarva hydraulic shield in soil and a Jarva Mark 12 TBM in rock. The permanent lining of the tunnel comprised concrete pipe with steel end-rings and a vinyl liner. This paper describes the construction of the project with particular emphasis on the excavation and lining of the tunnel.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

Health and safety issues are a very important aspect of mining activities. Although the application of scientific research and current technology shields workers from many dangerous aspects of mining, accidents do happen. Many companies and institutions worldwide have committed to a continuous effort to minimize such occurrences. In this study, the health and safety data pertaining to the Greek mining and quarrying industry for the last 3 decades are presented and critically evaluated with respect to number of workers, annual production, etc. Appropriate indices are also calculated regarding the incidence and frequency of accidents. Health and safety issues specific to mining in Greek are also discussed.

Public-private partnership efforts are working to create green landscapes from abandoned industrial sites. Fabricated soils, potentially an essential element of such landscapes, are designed to substitute for topsoil on the areas free from ground cover and plant community. The aluminosilicate matrix and humus form the soil micelle - the primary unit of any soil complex. Humus formation is a process based on carbon-nitrogen interaction. Sources of carbon can be materials rich in easily composted products like cellulose and polyphenols (plant leaves) or aged lignin polymers (saw dust from different woody plants). The pathways of carbon-nitrogen complexes are discussed. Properties of the fabricated soil components were examined by bio-tests and plant models.

The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for about 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In some recent years, the number of ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, last year?s Crandall Canyon twin mine disasters, in which 9 miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990?s these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents in the past 5 years. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery. Safer mining technologies have reduced the number of fatal incidents, but some recent failures have underlined the need for careful management of the retreat mining process. On the other hand, more than 400 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports, and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities. Available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting, and inside control roof bolters could dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety. Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona Project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Perú, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, Project development occurred against the backdrop of a Presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are outlined and discussed in the context of an evolving strategy.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

ISO 9000 is a system of quality standards that originated in Europe in the 1980s and has since been widely adopted by manufacturing companies throughout the world. The ISO 9000 standards have received less attention in the minerals industry. But, in part as a result of customer pressure, a trend is beginning to emerge for minerals producers to seek ISO certification. This is especially true among producers of industrial minerals. In early October 1994, SME's Industrial Minerals Division held a conference "ISO 9000 - uniting industrial mineral producers and consumers into quality partnerships," in Nashville, TN to bring people from the industry together to talk about their experiences with ISO 9000. William J. Miles, of Bentonite Corp. Inc., and A. Frank Alsobrook, of Alsobrook and Co., were cochairmen of the meeting. In his introductory remarks, Miles noted, "ISO 9000 is more than a quality program. It is a quality philosophy. Appropriately imple-mented, it is a contract between the supplier and the customer. It leads to continuous quality improvement and reduced manufacturing costs."

CRU estimates that the global supply of metallurgical grade alumina (MGA) grew by 5 percent during 2005 to a little more than 61 Mt (67 million st). About 30.7 Mt (33.8 million st), or 50.3 percent, of that originated from Oceania (principally due to the commissioning of the CAR refinery in Australia) and Latin America. In this context, Chinese production surged by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 7.7 Mt (8.5 million st) on the crest of a 17-percent rise in that country’s primary aluminium production. Meanwhile, on the demand side, there was a 6.7 percent climb year-on-year in global consumption to 62.3 Mt (68.6 million st). This reflected a healthy demand for primary metal from aerospace, construction, packaging and passenger transportation (to a lesser degree) in the United States, China, Brazil, South Korea and India. So there was an overall supply deficit of more than 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st). This, combined with an 18.3-percent diminution in closing stocks (down to 35 days of requirement), lifted the average spot price of MGA by 17.6 percent year-on-year to US$448/t (US$406/st).

More than 95 percent of all the barite mined and produced is used in the petroleum industry as “drillers mud.” The remaining barite is used in the industrial and medical markets. Therefore, the amount of drilling activity is a good indicator of the health and growth of the barite industry. The four major barite-producing countries in the world are China, the United States, India and Morocco. In 2005, the average number of drilling rigs exploring for oil and gas increased by about 15 percent over the average number in 2004. This increase in oil and gas exploration has resulted in a higher demand for barite and an increase in barite production.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. In its 2001 diesel particulate matter (DPM) rule for metal and nonmetal underground mines, MSHA established an interim concentration limit of 400 micrograms of total carbon (TC) per cubic meter of air (400TCµg/m3), and a final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3, to be phased in over five years. Following a court challenge to the 2001 rule, MSHA, industry and organized labor reached a partial settlement of the litigation under which the agency agreed to issue a proposal to amend the 2001 rule by, among other things, changing the surrogate from TC to elemental carbon (EC), applying MSHA's traditional hierarchy of controls, and revising requirements for one-year special extensions for complying with the final DPM exposure limit. MSHA issued a final rule in 2005 converting the interim concentration limit from 400TCµg/m3 to 308 micrograms of EC per cubic meter of air (308ECµg/m3) based on a miner?s personal exposure. Pending further rulemaking, MSHA retained the final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3. In May 2006, MSHA issued a final rule that clarified that the final limit of 160TCµg/m3 would be based on a miner?s personal exposure rather than as a concentration limit. The 2006 rule also phased in the final DPM limit in three steps over two years, beginning in May 2006 at 308ECµg/m3, followed eight months later in January 2007 with a limit of 350TCµg/m3, and finally reaching 160TCµg/m3 in May 2008. Also in the 2006 rule, MSHA committed to converting the 160TCµg/m3 limit to an EC limit in future rulemaking. This paper reviews the DPM exposure limits in the context of the MSHA rulemakings and discusses the DPM engineering controls that were utilized by mine operators to attain compliance with each progressively lower limit.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.
