"CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal-oil-mixture (COM) business for over five years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August 1979. For over two years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large-scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit.CoaLiquid has conducted commercial-scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.IntroductionCoaLiquid, Inc. officially dedicated its plant on August 31, 1979, at a ceremony presided over by the then Governor of Kentucky, The Honorable Julian Carroll. The dedication marked the culmination of over three years of research and development work and marked the beginning of a new era of coal-oil-mixtures as a commercial commodity in the marketplace. As the first such plant in the United States, it set the tone for construction to follow.CLI was originally owned and managed by a group of entrepreneurs from Kentucky who had developed the process and constructed the plant on purely private investment and conventional financing. Beginning in late 1976, with a pilot-scale operation, also located in Shelbyville, Kentucky (near Louisville), CLI began producing a stable mixture of 50070 coal, 30% to 40% oil and 10% to 20% water by weight. The technology employed was developed by Eric C. Cottell of Long Island, New York and is covered by U.S. Letters Patent No. 3,941,552. Since the pilot plant operation, CoaLiquid has made many refinements to its process and in fact has added new technology to its portfolio of patents and patents pending. Further refinements to the product now produce a stable mixture of 50% coal, 40% No.6 fuel oil and 10% water by weight."

MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprise, under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, produces about 1.1 million tonnes (T) of manganese ore annually from three opencast and seven underground mines. The underground operations are mining using an overhand cut and fill method. The orebody is too narrow for the use of larger equipment and the poor to fair rock mass quality limits the size of stable excavations. Prior to the 1990s underground support consisted primarily of timber square sets in tandem with timber chocks and props. As mine production requirements increased throughout the 1990s led to larger opening sizes and more modern support practices. Research was conducted on ground support design based on rock classification and empirical techniques for designing ground support. Based on the findings and field trials, the Company adopted full column cement grouted cable bolts for back support. Instrumented field trials, using extensometers and load cells on the cable support confirmed the support effectiveness. Stope design was based on two and three dimensional stress modeling which resulted in a significant increase in stope dimensions. The rock mechanics studies for safe stope design were carried out using numerical modeling tool in two and three dimensions for the analysis of stresses. Based on the findings, the safe stope geometry with new stoping parameters was introduced. The earlier stope length of 30 mtrs were changed to 60 mtrs with in situ rib pillar at the cross cuts and in situ post pillars to be left-out in the stope. This leads the formation of of panel comprising of three stopes, for production, supporting and filling. For mechanical handling of ROM in stopes Side Discharge Loaders (SDL) were introduced. The above changes have improved the face productivity from 2?3.5 T with manual operation and 9 T with SDL. The above rapid mining operations has improved the stope productivity but reduced the stope life from 6 to 3 years. For the improvement of the stope availability, further studies were conducted by numerical modeling of stress analysis. The related studies confirmed that with the existing supporting system and proper instrumentation, level interval could be increased up to 45 mtrs from the existing 30 mtrs at deeper levels. At present below 12th Level interval is 45 m at Balaghat Mine. For future mechanization program for introduction of Single Boomers, LPDT, Cutting Machines etc for the development headings rock mechanics studies are underway. The paper provides details of rock mechanics studies that were carried out to study efficacy of the cable bolt support, safe stoping parameters and increased level interval for the improvements in safety, production and productivity at Balaghat Mine.

"Teck and Aurubis are working together to commercialize a technology for the processing of copper arsenic sulphide concentrates that is economic and sustainable with regards to the environment and community. The pressure hydrometallurgical approach is a desirable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. A test work program was carried out where a range of copper concentrates with varying arsenic grades was processed under CESL leach conditions. This paper discusses the stability character (in terms of arsenic) of the resulting residues and their mineralogy. The basic ferric arsenate sulphate phase (BFAS; otherwise known as type 2) was identified as the main arsenic carrier. All CESL residues demonstrated high stability (<1 mg/L As) through a range of aggressive (pH and ORP) environmental leach conditions.INTRODUCTIONArsenic deportment and control in the copper industry needs an integrated approach involving each stage of the value chain, i.e. exploration, mine operation, refining process and mine closure. Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Canada’s largest diversified mining company and Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, have formed a partnership to advance the application of CESL copper-gold technology for the development of high arsenic bearing copper resources (Bruce et al., 2011).Among the options for arsenic control in the metallurgical treatment of copper concentrates is the precipitation of ferric arsenate, which is widely accepted as the most suitable method for stabilizing arsenic (Ferron and Wang, 2003). The pressure hydrometallurgical approach to processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates is a favorable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. Under CESL pressure leaching conditions (150 °C, 1380 kPa) high copper extraction and arsenic (V) fixation is possible.Within the pressure leach autoclave, arsenate and ferric iron react to form scorodite type phases. The precipitate formed under CESL conditions is dependent on the Fe (III) /As (V) ratio and the tenor of cations and anions, particularly excess sulphate (Gomez et al., 2011a). Previous studies on CESL residues have found arsenic to be present as crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) (Bruce et al., 2011), basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS: Fe(AsO4)1-x(SO4)x(OH)x·(1-x)H2O, where 0.3<x<0.7), and/or arsenate adsorbed on to hematite (Gomez et al. 2011b). Although not a focus of previous work, scorodite was the predominant precipitate formed when the concentrate Fe/As was <1.5 (Mayhew et al., 2010), and BFAS was the predominant precipitate when the concentrate Fe/As was >10 (Gomez et al. 2011b)."

A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling&apos;s report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known&apos; for many years, and on Jeffrey&apos;s map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".

"Five main lignite seams occur in the Tertiary Ravenscrag Formation in the Eastevan area, at depths of 100 feet or less. They are named, in ascending order: the Boundary, Estevan, Souris, Roche Percee and Short Creek seams. A total sequence of approximately 250 feet is represented by the coal beds and interstratified clays, silts and sands. Strata dip to the southeast at 25 feet per mile or less and trike northeast. Large areas underlain by coal seams at shallow depths are delineated. Reserve calculations are dependent on detailed information on seam thicknesses and feasible stripmining depths. The stratigraphically higher seams are thinner on the average than lower seams and this, together with the increase in elastic size fractions in higher strata, suggests a retreat of a Tertiary marine margin to the south during the closing depositional history of coal seams and associated strata."

The orientation of planes of inherent weakness (joints) with reference to an excavation in rock is the critical factor determining stability. The purely frictional 'residual' strength remaining following the breakdown of initial cohesion is the only strength which can be counted on to resist sliding for the long term. A simple method of resolving driving and resisting forces in three dimensions along joint intersections 'undercut' by the excavation is presented. Contrary to the case of slope failure in soils, it is shown how significant changes in the slope angle sometimes have no effect on the degree of stability pre-sent in rock slopes. Wall control by reorientation of the slope, the use of cable bolts and water diversion are briefly discussed.

"Porosity neutron deflection scales can be derived more easily by cumulative correlation than by the conventional method of plotting corresponding points on a graph. The micro-log can be used as a porosity datum for the neutron log by transforming the permeability cut-off it shows to a porosity cut-off by a permeability-porosity function obtained from core analysis. Porosity footage values calculated in this manner from the neutron log are within 20 per cent of core analysis values."

Samples sourced from the Goldstrike property in Nevada USA, have been evaluated in terms of their preg-robbing capacity and the physical structure of the graphitic carbon component in the carbonaceous gold ore. The study highlights a wide range in preg-robbing capacity between samples collected from the Betze-Post open pit and Rodeo underground mine. The physical structure of the graphitic carbon was assessed using Raman spectroscopy, and is found to play an important role in influencing preg-robbing behaviour. Differences observed in the physical structure of graphitic carbon are thought to be the result of hydrothermal events that occurred at Goldstrike.

Productivity and efficiency of diesel-powered underground trucks and LHDs can be enhanced through the application of a range of advanced technologies. In addition, these machines are subject to ever more stringent emissions control requirements. This paper will review how various technologies can improve usability, maintainability, and performance of LHDs, through a number of examples. The use of instrumentation and monitoring to understand the role of operator practice on mucking efficiency, as well as the use of finite-element analysis to evaluate structural design, and the use of control techniques to modify operator inputs and hence decrease power consumption, will be presented.

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. These properties are largely due to the formation of a large number of nano-sized metastable precipitates during artificial ageing (Polmear, 2006; Eskin, 2003; Gazizov, Dubina, Zhemchuzhnikova, & Kaibyshev, 2015). "Sulfation roasting of nickel concentrate to generate water-soluble metal sulfates was investigated as an alternative process to smelting for the recovery of valuable metals. The kinetics of dissolution of various species of the calcine in three leachants was studied; hot water, dilute HCl, and concentrated HCl. The results indicated that dissolution of sulfates by hot water at 90 ºC is achieved within 30 minutes. In order to increase the recovery of the valuable metals, acid leaching is necessary due to the existence of ferrite in the calcine.INTRODUCTIONInvestigations on the sulfation roasting of nickeliferous sulfide ores or concentrates were mainly carried out in 1950’s to 1990’s to generate water soluble non-ferrous metal sulfates followed by metal recovery by leaching (Stephens, 1953; Thornhill, 1954, 1961; Fletcher and Shelef, 1964a, 1964b; Fletcher and Hester, 1964; Frankiewicz, 1977; Norrgran, 1983). Commercialization of the sulfation roasting process was only performed by Falconbridge Ltd. (Thornhill, 1961; Boldt, 1967), which employed a sulfation roast process on nickeliferous pyrrhotite at 680 oC where Ni, Cu, and Co were leached and Fe2O3 was produced for the iron industry. In 1965, 118,342 tons of pyrrhotite was processed, however because of the huge SO2 emissions (no acid plant) relative to the nickel production and the poor economics, this plant was shut down.Nickel production from sulfide ores via pyrometallurgical means, especially the electric furnace smelting process, is a major emitter of SO2 to the environment and a big energy consumer (Warner, Diaz, Dalvi, Mackey, Tarasov and Jones, 2007). Nowadays, due to the more stringent environmental regulations as well as the need to reduce energy consumption, metal production by sulfation roasting is gaining more attention as an alternative process to smelting. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the extent and rate of leaching of valuable metals from the sulfation roasted nickel calcine, aiming to maximize the metal recovery and minimize the dissolution of iron species."

Abstract-The mechanism by which stratiform ore deposits of PGE (platinum-group elements) are laid down in ultramafic igneous complexes is not completely clear. Early studies by the author and coworkers on numerical analyses of the convective cooling of low-Rayleigh-number magma chambers examined the effect of suspended crystal load on fluid density, and raised the possibility that the growth of the suspended crystal load during cooling could split a magma chamber into several convecting layers. The lower layers would have a higher content of refractory phases than the upper layers, which would consist of more evolved melt. This paper considers numerical modelling, as well as theoretical and experimental work in other fields dealing with suspended loads in fluids. The calculations, which are based on the physics of convecting magmas, yield quantitative relationships consistent with the observation that economically interesting stratiform PGE deposits are restricted to large magma bodies, and also yield estimation of the depth in a magma chamber at which certain grades of mineralization may occur.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Un modèle de démélange linéaire, appliqué pour estimer les minéraux dans le spectre des échantillons de poudres mixtes, indique que ce modèle a atteint une valeur R2 de 0,88. "Detailed characterization and improved recovery of a micro-fine, low-grade refractory gold ore from a beneficiation plant in Yunnan Province, China, was investigated. Different analytical techniques, such as videlicet size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mineral analysis by a Mineral Liberation Analyser, were used for mineralogical characterization of the ore. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of the grinding fineness and the use of various flotation reagent regimes involving collectors, depressors, and activators on the flotation behaviour of micro-fine auriferous pyrite. Two-stage flotation resulted in high gold grade (32.71 g/t) and gold recovery (80.02%) of the bulk gold concentrate. This process opens the possibilities of maximizing Au recoveries in a micro-fine low-grade refractory gold ore where low recoveries are common.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid development of the gold industry, refractory gold ores are becoming increasingly important resources for gold production (O’Connor & Dunne, 1994; Agorhom, Skinner, & Zanin, 2012). Among these refractory gold ores, sulfur and micro-grained native gold ores represent a significant challenge, since they are not amenable to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. The gold contained in this type of ore is very finely disseminated and encapsulated in sulfides, which makes it inaccessible to the cyanide solution during direct cyanidation (Bulatovic, 1997; Allan & Woodcock, 2001). Autoclave pressure oxidation (AC POX) of the sulfide ore and subsequent cyanidation is a common technology used to recover the gold in such types of ore. Flotation is often used as a pre-treatment method to refractory gold ore (Monte Lins, & Oliveira, 1997).As the gold-carrier minerals are usually finely disseminated (sometimes under 10 µm) and intimately associated with gangue minerals, a fine grind is necessary to get a high degree of liberation. At the same time, the fine grind usually causes the production of significant quantities of slimes, which comprise easy-to-float gangue minerals such as mica, dolomite, and calcite. These mineral phases are naturally hydrophobic and float readily, competing with the value minerals in the froth phase and resulting in lower concentrate grades."

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

"Atmospheric leaching of arsenical sulfide concentrates, and especially enargite leaching, is one of the major challenges within the current hydrometallurgy research area. One of the recent processes developed for sulfide ore treatment is atmospheric leaching in the presence of AF 5, a novel carbon based catalyst, in chloride media. The quantification of different ion concentrations during enargite and chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of AF 5 were measured and the copper recovery rates of 97% and 96% were achieved. The objective of this study is to shed light on the leaching mechanism of the sulfide minerals. Based on the speciation of iron and copper by different titration methods, the AF 5 catalyst first reduced ferric and cupric ions and then oxidized ferrous, cuprous and arsenite ions. The oxidation behavior of the catalyst enhanced the leaching results. The AF 5 catalyst also caused in situ precipitation of scorodite in leaching experiment. The speciation of ions in the chloride media were simulated by Phreeqc software and the dominant species in the leaching solution were determined.INTRODUCTION The hydrometallurgy of copper has been used for several decades and is still under development for more complex copper sulfide minerals due to their refractory nature. Most of the world copper reserves are in the form of chalcopyrite; and enargite is known as a major contaminant. Pyrometallurgical processing of enargite is problematic due to arsenic release and tight environmental regulations (Peacey, Gupta, and Ford n.d.). On the other hand, lower recoveries in the hydrometallurgical processes make most of these processes impractical. Several leaching processes have been developed for the leaching of copper sulfide minerals. Some of the common treatment methods for copper sulfide minerals are pressure oxidation leaching (POX), CESL, Activox, Albion process, atmospheric ferric sulfate leaching, Dynatec, Galvanox, and Hydro copper process (Barr, Defreyne, and Mayhew 2005; Conner and Anderson 2013; D.G. Dixon, Mayne, and Baxter 2008; Hyvärinen and Hämäläinen 2005; Palmer and Johnson 2005; Rohner, Bartsch, and Ngoviky 2012). Generally it is not viable to dissolve copper sulfide minerals at ambient pressure in mild acidic media and dissolution of these refractory minerals requires harsh conditions in the presence of oxidant materials (Biswas and Davenport 2002). Ferric ions have been used as an oxidant in different media in copper sulfide leaching processes. U. S. Bureau of Mines’ Reno Metallurgy Research Center in 1969 (Haver and Wong 1971) investigated ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite. Dutrizac and Macdonald (1972) studied ferric sulfate leaching of enargite. Based on this study, 50% of the copper was recovered at 80-85 ºC after 7 days of leaching. Cupric ions can also be used as an oxidant. Parker, Paul, and Power (1981) stated that cupric/cuprous couples are more effective than ferric/ferrous couples in chloride media because they are rapid and reversible. In this study, the effect of strain level and holding time in semisolid temperature range via SIMA process on AS21 Mg alloy was investigated. Some cylindrical samples of this alloy with 1cm in height and 2.5cm in diameter (H/D=0.4) were compressed to 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% at 300-C. Then, the samples were reheated in semisolid temperature range at 614°C for various times. The results of optical microscopy and image analysis showed that with increasing of strain and holding time, dendritic structure changed to equi-axed structure, gradually. Also, the best conditions to obtain good globular structure were achieved. Furthermore, it was seen that after compression and reheating, Mg2Si intermetallics with Chinese script morphology converted to dispersed-fine particles which were distributed into the ci-Mg grains.
