Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012. "Dynamic decision-making can significantly increase the value of mining projects and deliver better sustainability outcomes under conditions of uncertainty. Despite its benefits, dynamic decision-making is rarely used by the mining industry, possibly because of the complexity of the algorithms used to make sequential decisions under uncertainty and difficulties in visualising the optimal strategies. To achieve better outcomes in practice, decision-makers in industry would benefit from a tool that would help them to understand and implement the results of the analysis.CSIRO is developing innovative dynamic decision support tools that include an intuitive graphical display of the boundaries between the regions of different optimal decisions, which would significantly assist optimal sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The dynamic decision support tool is based on novel stochastic optimal control methodologies that can be used to optimise decisions in situations with multiple uncertain variables and decisions (Tarnopolskaya, Chen and Bao, 2015; Chen et al, 2015; Langrené et al, 2015). The types of market uncertainties that can be considered include commodity prices, interest rates and exchange rate, while the key orebody uncertainties include the reserves, boundaries between ore types and even geometallurgical parameters.The dynamic decision support tools have a number of benefits and can be used to:construct optimal operational strategies and to optimally manage resources projectsgain insight into optimal strategies under different market conditions and project settings compare expected project values under different project settings and to select the setting that provides best sustainability outcomes.This extended abstract demonstrates the use and benefits of the dynamic decision support tools using a synthetic case study of a gold mine.CITATION:Chen, W, Langrené, N, Tarnopolskaya, T, Zhu, Z and Cooksey, M, 2016. The matte-metal-equilibria in the system Pb-Cu-S have been studied at temperatures between 720 and 920¦C by direct sampling and D.T.A. methods. These results are compared with those of other workers. The applications of such data to a continuous copper drossing process, and to a number of other metallurgical processes are discussed.

About 17% of the world's present day oil supplies comes from wells drilled in the continental shelf of some 28 countries. The demand for oil is increasing each year and is expected to quintuple in the next decade. In the same period, the demand for gas will climb to at least 20 times its present rate. In the next decade, the percentage of oil and gas obtained from offshore is expected to rise to nearly half the world's consumption. The offshore oil industry is currently striving to achieve new technological advances in the field of deep ocean operations, especially in face of adverse seas. While the emphasis was put on drilling vessels for exploration, the industry was slow in developing effective offshore construction vessels. Until a year ago, construction vessels were but large barges with construction equipment mounted on their decks. These vessels all shared the same severe limitation: When the sea exceeds a five-foot wave height (and in some cases as little as three feet) the conventional construction barge is forced to suspend operations. In face of an oncoming storm they must run for shelter. Their utilization, therefore, is limited and in rough weather areas, such as the North Sea or the Bass Strait is lower than 50%.

The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

Recent trends in flotation technology are briefly reviewed. These show that considerable development has been made as the operators, suppliers and technologists have responded to the challenges of the industry. Most of these advances have been based on empirical and phenomenological methods. There is a considerable opportunity to make further advances through a more fundamental, scientific approach. Some of this work is discussed and, although progress is being made on this front, industrial uptake has been somewhat slow. A number of specific issues facing the industry are discussed.

However, proper design of the entire system is critical for a paste project to be successful. Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

This paper proposes a set of new approaches for the optimisation of planning and designs in mines by means of evolutionary algorithms, which include the determination of ore grade, layout of development system, selection of mining methods and production scheduling in underground mines. The applications indicate that evolutionary algorithms are particularly suitable to the complex and complicated problems in mines.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

In the paper a stochastic model of the batch sieving procedure is presen- ted resulting in a system of ordinary differential equations to describe the time dependence of the mass fractions on the sieve surfaces being randomly influenced by sampling errors. The coefficients of the system can be interpreted as sieving velocities. Their dependence on the sieving con- ditions is discussed and a special type of functional relationship and methods are suggested to determine this function experimentally. Moreover the applicability of the approach is demonstrated by an example to evaluate the particle size distribution, if only the result of incomplete test sieving is known. For this problem a rough error estimation is performed.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. The home page at www.datametallogenica.com contains much example data and details of subscription and membership rates.
