The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. The aim of this paper is to summarise all known Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits worldwide, including Australian deposits such as the well-known channel iron deposits (CID). Nearly 400 occurrences have been catalogued based on stratigraphy, geographical coordinates, facies, grade, tonnage and iron bearing ore minerals. The description also includes details on the geochemistry, genetic models and main references. Brief statistical analysis provides an overview of the variation between these deposits. This compilation offers a basis for better understanding of the ooidal ironstone deposits and a global evaluation of this important resource worldwide.

From the very early stages of a mining project, there is a requirement to predict the chemistry of potential drainages from various waste storage facilities. However, using relative masses to scale chemical loads measured by laboratory kinetic tests, such as humidity cells, to a full-scale mine waste facility will lead to concentration predictions that are unrealistically high for many dissolved constituents. Scaling factors developed by various procedures indicate that laboratory rates may range anywhere from two to eight times (Drever and Clow, 1995) to 100 to 1000 times faster than field rates (Malmstrom et al, 2000; Smith and Beckie, 2003; Ritchie, 1994). This contribution will use previous works and secondary data to discuss the significance of scale in water quality predictions. It will also present primary experimental geochemical and numerical data from a column leaching study on coal spoils to discuss potential applications of mesoscale leaching tests in bridging the gap between bench-top tests and field scale trials.

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. During the 1980s and early 1990s, the South African coal industry experienced a series of methane explosions in which well over 200 coal miners lost their lives. In addition, a fire and an explosion in the gold mining sector claimed a further 240 lives. These tragic incidents resulted in the establishment of a research facility at Kloppersbos dedicated to explosion and fires research and the funding of an extensive research program, and almost certainly influenced the government of the day in its decision to establish, in 1993, the Leon Commission of Enquiry into Mine Health and Safety. The results of this focused research program, the wide-ranging recommendations of the Leon Commission and the determination of the coal mining industry to improve its safety record all combined to result in the past 20 years without a major explosion.This paper lists some of the research outcomes and, through three case studies, illustrates what can be learnt from investigations following explosions. The paper concludes with an evaluation of some of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Pike River coal tragedy. Many of the Commission’s conclusions are pertinent and relevant to the coal mining industry worldwide and their implementation could significantly improve coalmine safety; however, a careful study of the available facts indicates there could well be an alternative explanation of the source of the methane, the location of the ignition and the size of the explosion at the Pike River coalmine.CITATION:Phillips, H R, 2015. The Yanacocha district hosts the largest and most significant acid-sulphate, high-sulphidation deposits in Per· with total production, reserves and resources of over 27 million ounces of gold. Several other smaller high-sulphidation systems are also recognised in the Cajamarca region including La Zanja, Sipßn, Tantahuatay, and San Nicolas. These each have reserves/resources of between 640 000 and 800 000 ounces of gold. Gold deposits in the Yanacocha district are hosted in an extensive volcanic field. Flow domes have intruded precursor pyroclastic rocks and flows that are interpreted as part of an earlier intermediate multi-vent volcanic complex. The larger, contiguous Yanacocha Norte - Sur and Encajon gold deposits are spatially associated with late-stage diatreme breccias. At La Zanja extensive acid-sulphate alteration is associated with the margins of the small San Pedro caldera (6 +4.5 km), nested within the larger, less well-defined La Zanja caldera (19 +24 km). The inner caldera is resurgent with abundant magmatism expressed as several flow dome complexes located on the caldera rim, and shallow level intrusive stocks. Gold mineralisation is associated with a WNW-trending structural corridor that transects the southern margin of the San Pedro caldera. On the eastern side of the La Zanja caldera there are a series of younger andesitic eruptive centres, some associated with acid-sulphate alteration and gold mineralisation. The Sipßn deposit occurs in one such centre with structurally-controlled gold associated with a NE-trending silicified structure developed within a sequence of andesitic tuffs. In conclusion, although a number of high-sulphidation deposits are recognised in northern Per·, their settings and styles of mineralisation are all quite different. Smaller deposits generally have strong and obvious structural controls. In the larger Yanacocha deposits the structural controls are less obvious, and mineralisation is disseminated in porous or strongly fractured and brecciated silica. Erosional levels are probably a significant factor, with disseminated mineralisation at higher levels, and structurally-controlled mineralisation in more deeply eroded deposits.

Three soil cover test areas were constructed on waste rock backfilled into the Lichtenberg Pit, near Ronneburg Germany. A fourth, uncovered area was included as a control. Each test area measures 50 m by 65 m, and was constructed using full-scale equipment and construction practices. Extensive material sampling and testing was included as part of the construction. Devices were installed in each plot to monitor meteorology, infiltration, run-off, interflow, soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil pore gases. Boreholes were completed in each area and instrumented for temperature, pressure and pore gas sampling to a depth of approximately 60 m. Data from the monitoring instruments have been collected since July 2000, and have been comprehensively analysed and modelled on two occasions. The paper presents an overview of the test area design and instrumentation and the results of the two comprehensive data reviews. The reliability of the various monitoring methods is discussed and experience with several innovative methods is reviewed. The difficulties encountered in modelling the data set using common soil physical models are discussed.

Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

Much research is aimed at providing a revolutionary advance in technology that has the potential to render current mining and beneficiation problems obsolete. Such revolutionary advancements have been significant but few in number. Recent history shows that most improvement has been derived from a series of incremental improvements to the many processes that make up mining and beneficiation systems. Management approaches are changing to encourage this 'continuous improvement' and to support its implementation through the formal management of quality. This paper reviews some of the industry's priority R&D project areas and demonstrates that very significant opportunities are available to broaden the focus for improvement from individual processes to include the interaction between mining and mineral beneficiation systems.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Today, FORACO operates over 300 drill rigs in more than 20 countries.The Asia Pacific region of FORACO runs a fleet of 37 late model drilling rigs servicing the diamond drilling, reverse circulation, coal, coal seam gas and hydro drilling sectors.FORACO Australia has extensive experience delivering large diameter coring (LDC) samples to the resource community. In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

The Kelian Gold mine project won two excellence awards from the Victorian Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. It was a challenging project, fast tracked in a remote and inhospitable tropical environment. The creation of a profitable and efficient mine was a significant engineering and project management achievement. The difficulties encountered and the way they were managed provide valuable lessons. These include the importance of sufficiently detailed engineering in all aspects of the job to enable the best estimates possible to be prepared during feasibility studies, the need to prepare the project scope and execution plan with disciplined and rigorous attention to detail by a highly experienced team and the value of identifying, assessing and mitigating risk and uncertainty during execution. The practical benefits of applying these lessons were demonstrated in the successful management of technical uncertainty on the recent diversion of the Kelian River to allow the expansion of the Kelian mine.

Critical reviews of grade control generally focus on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block model (OCM) grades, with little or no attention given to dig-line design. For example, the estimation of block grades is deemed important as estimation errors lead to the misclassification of ore types and subsequent dollar loss. Recognition of the problem that the underestimation of block grades may be more or less costly than overestimation led to the application of loss functions to the classification of individual OCM blocks by ore type. The method is known as maximum profit selection (MPS). However, each OCM block may be misclassified a second time by dig-line design. Although each block may initially be assigned an optimum ore type by MPS, OCM blocks are seldom individually mineable by ore type. As a result, a common solution to this problem is the design of mineable polygons or dig lines loosely constrained by a minimum mining width. All material within a properly designed dig-line polygon can be mined and sent to a single destination such as the mill, stockpile or waste dump. These dig lines are often designed manually or by simple variations of computer-generated contour lines. They are generally suboptimal and result in additional misclassifications of ore types. This paper provides an algorithm for constrained optimum dig-line design where dig-line misclassifications are also evaluated through loss functions or MPS. Constrained optimum dig-line designs minimise the dollars lost by dig line misclassifications for a given minimum mining width constraint. Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.
