A number of experimental rnethods—X-ray powder diffractometry, Laue photography, X-ray small-angle scattering, and transmission electron microscopy and dijfraction—have been utilized to examine the morphology associated with precipitation from the terminal, g, solid solution of a Zn-1 pct Cu alloy. A significant age hardening was observed in a 1 pct Cu alloy. X-ray and electron diffraction results showed that the structural inhomogeneities associated with the hardening were isotructural with the matrix. The average size and shape of the inhomogeneities were deduced from the electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. The preprecipitates are hexagonal platelets some 300? in diam. and some twelve unit cells thick. The orientation of the platelets was deduced from Laue photographs and electron diffraction. The platelet plane is (0001). When a large amount of pre-precipitation is present in a localized volume the new lattice is often disoriented by a rotation about (0001) of of the matrix. WhILE dilute Zn-Cu alloys have been commercially important for some 50 years, relatively very little is known metallographically about this material. The "Zilloys", zinc with about 1 wt pct Cu and sometimes a small addition of magnesium, are used to produce rolled zinc which is harder and stronger than that produced by other rollable zinc alloys.' According to the phase diagrams of the zinc-rich side of the Cu-Zn system, such dilute Zn-Cu alloys should age-harden;2-5 the solubility of copper in zinc, g-phase, at 424°C is 2.68 pct, while at 0°C it is only to 0.3 pct. However, the published literature on the aging of this system appears to be limited to a documentation of the contraction of 1, 2, and 3 pct Cu alloys aging at 95°c,6 and an attempt to measure changes in lattice parameters during aging.' In the latter work, no lattice parameter changes were detected, although a broadening of the highest-angle lines was detected and considerable diffuse scattering was observed. Micro-structural investigations have been limited to the latest stage of aging, wherein Widmanstatten precipitates are formed.3,47 These alloys are of interest for still another reason. The two most zinc-rich phases in the Cu-Zn system, 77 and E, are both hcp. Moreover, the change in a, between 17 and t for a 1 wt pct Cu alloy is onlv 3.64 -,~ct: the change in Co is 12.0 ict. It would be anticipated that precipitation in such a material might occur through metastable phases or G.P. zones with epitaxy along mutual 0001 planes. The goals of the present work are aimed at partially filling the void of knowledge concerning the early stages of precipitation from the g phase. In particular, we have attempted to document the magnitude of the age hardening of this system and to determine the size, shape, and orientation within the matrix of the elements of precipitation in an early stage of condensation. EXPERIMENTAL A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were prepared In two somewhat different ways, one method being used for X-ray Laue and diffractometer measurements, optical microscopy, and Rockwell hardness measurements and the other used for electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. In the first case zinc and copper in the proper proportions to yield a 1 wt pct Cu alloy were melted together in a closed graphite crucible. Castings so made were free of apparent segregation or oxidation. The castings were then solution-annealed at 400°C for several days and then quenched in water to room temperature. Filings of portions of the specimens were made for use as X-ray powder diffractometry specimens. The electron microscope material was made as follows. Castings were made under vacuum with copper powder placed inside a hollow zinc cylinder to insure good contact of the materials. These 1 wt pct Cu pieces were then rolled to 0.1 mm with an intermediate anneal in vacuo. The rolled sheets so formed were then annealed for about 6 hr at 225°C. Finally the specimens were electropolished slowly until thin enough for transmission electron microscopy. The polishing is discussed in greater detail in the Results section. B) Measurements. X-ray measurements of three types were performed. A G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer was used to examine powders of the alloy for identification of second-phase material. A Kratky small-angle camera, also operating from a G.E. tube, was used to investigate the sizes of small precipitate particles. In both cases, nickel-filtered copper radiation was utilized. Finally, individual grains of the large-grained castings were examined in the back-reflection Laue geometry. Electron microscope studies were carried out with a J.E.O.L. Model 6A instrument. RESULTS A) Hardness Measurements. Hardness measurements performed at room temperature on the large-grained polycrystalline specimens showed a hardening which was essentially complete in 3 hr. Fig. 1 shows a typical plot of hardness vs aging time. The relative magnitude of the ultimate hardening varied from run to run between 150 and 200 pct of the value for the material immediately after quenching from the solution anneal. Most probably the variations reflect small changes in the time taken to remove the specimen from the vacuum furnace after the solution anneal.

We have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the firstL we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second: we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allo-tropic states of iron—a, stable below A2; , stable between A2 and A3; and , stable above A3—all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, and did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier mas even led to think from some of our results that r-iron could very well be a rhom-bohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. The solid solutions which aluminum forms with copper, and with magnesium and silicon, are not extensive, and accordingly could not be expected to form Widmanstatten figures profusely nor with great ease. A study of the Widmanstatten figures in these systems seemed desirable, however, because of the interest which these alloys bear towards age-hardening theories resulting from the necessary relationship between the age-hardening phenomena and the atomic processes leading to the formation of Widmanstatten figures.' Alloys of Aluminum with Copper The most accurate determination of the solid solubi1it.y of copper in aluminum seems to be that by Dix and Richardsoq2 whose results are represented in Fig. 1. According to this work, aluminum dissolves 5.6 weight per cent of copper at 548", and less than one per cent at room temperature. Judging from the constitutional diagram, this solid solu-lion on cooling tends to precipitate the compound CuA12, and this conclusion has been confirmed experimentally by Schmid and Wassermann.

This work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility of determining the amount of the constituents without separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. Suppose Fig. 1 represents a part of a photomicrograph on which the total area of the black figures is to be found. By a system of parallel lines drawn short equal distances apart all figures may be divided into trapezoids. As the area of a trapezoid is equal to its median multiplied by its altitude, the relation between the total areas of the black and the white figures comprised within each strip is equal to the relation between the sums of medians for these figures respectively. This is also true for the whole area of the photomicrograph. Therefore, to determine the total areas of the black and white figures we must first find the proportion between the sums of the medians and then divide the area of the whole photomicrograph in the same proportion.

I. HISTORY OF OIL DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO THE occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopote" as a building cement.1 DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de Ias Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 ft. deep was drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said too have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican, Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State -

The maintenance cost, or renewal cost, in any preparation plant is a large item of expense and reflects in the total cost of producing and preparing the ton of coal. It is given constant study to the end that ways and means of controlling and reducing this proportion of the total cost may be developed. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. The notes given in this paper, the result of observations made during recent brief professional trips to the northern States of Mexico, are offered as a slight contribution to the geological knowledge of a region little known, but long famous for its rich gold- and silver-mines. They are not detailed geological studies, but they contain, I believe, the salient facts. The following districts were visited: 1. Santa Eulalia (silverlead) ; 2. Parral (silver-lead); 3. Las Vigas (copper); 4. Jimenez (copper); 5. Guadalupe y Calvo (gold); 6. La Cumbre (gold); 7. Palmarito (silver); 8. Cananea (copper); 9. Sierra Pinitos (gold); 10. Sierra Azul (gold). 1. The Santa Eulalia Silver-Lead Deposits. Seventeen miles SE. of Chihuahua is the mining district of Santa Eulalia, to which that city owes its origin and long prosperity. Discovered in 1703, this district has been, and still is, one of the great silver-lead producers of the world. For 86 years after its discovery, the total output upon which the crown tax was paid amounted to $112,000,000. Worked until within the last 20 years by the most primitive methods, without machinery of any kind, the deposits continued to yield a vast treasure of silver; at present the yearly tonnage far exceeds that of former times. A broad-gauge road runs from Chihuahua up the valley of a small creek to the village of Santa Eulalia, which is situated within the borders of the mountains of that name. A few miles out of Chihuahua a narrow-gauge railway, owned by the Chihuahua Mining Co., branches off to the mines. This road ascends a smooth but steeply-rising plain to the base of the mountains, and winds about the slopes until the mines are

Heteroepitaxy of silicon on stoichiometric spinel has been studied. Both boron-doped (p-type) and arsenic-doped (n-type) single-crystal silicon films have been grown by the pyrolysis of silane on sioichiometric spinel (MgAl2O4) substrates prepared by a flux technique. The spinel crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit no thermal instability at temperatures employed for silicon deposition. The growth parameters of epitaxial silicon have been studied. Effects of substrate orientation, surface preparation, and growth conditions on the silicon Properties have been determined. The silicon-spinel composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical techniques. Information on epitaxial orientation relationship, defect structures and film-substrate interface has been obtained. A parallel orientation relationship was found between silicon and spinel. The silicon films exhibit no subgrain structures. However, growth pyramids, microtwins, stacking faults, and dislocations are the prevalent defects. The deformation of epitaxial silicon was measured by an X-ray technique. It was found that the epitaxial silicon is strained under compres-sive stress due to the thermal expansion difference between the film and substrate. The stress was estimated using the classical plate theory and beam equation. Electrical properties of the epitaxial silicon have been measured, including resistivity, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility. MIS and vertical through diffused junction structures have been fabricated wing silicon-spinel composite. Information on MIS characteristics, minority carrier life time, and junction properties has been obtained. THE achievement of single-crystal growth of large area silicon semiconductor films on oxide insulating substrates is of technical importance to many solid state electronic devices. The semiconductor-insulator composite structure is also of scientific interest because the heteroepitaxy is determined by the spatial relationship between the atomic arrangement in the substrate and that of the atoms in the appropriate crystallographic plane of silicon. The degree of crystalline perfection of the silicon deposits depends also on the physical condition of substrate surface. Epitaxial growth of silicon on commercial flame fusion Al-rich spinel (MgO:3.3A12O3) has been reported by several investigators.'-4 The lattice of spinel of this composition is distorted. The material cracks and exsolves the excess alumina in the lattice at temperatures (-1200°C) used in fabricating silicon devices. Stoichiometric MgA12O4 spinel exhibits neither lattice distortion nor thermal instability. Results are given on the epitaxial growth and characterization of silicon on stoichiometric spinel. EXPERIMENTAL Fabrication of Silicon-Spinel Composite Structures. The MgA12O4 spinel substrate wafers were prepared from bulk single crystals grown at about 1200°C by a flux technique5 using a PbF2 flux. The crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit a typical dislocation density of less than 50 lines per sq cm. The crystals are thermally stable without cracking and exsolution of alumina to at least 1500°C. The spinel crystals were oriented for cutting by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method.6 Substrate wafers (about 25 mil thick) of (Ill), (loo), and (110) orientations have been obtained bu cutting the X-ray oriented crystals using a standard type diamond wheel. An accuracy of better than 1/2 deg is maintained throughout the operation. The spinel substrate wafers were mechanically lapped and polished to produce the flat and smooth surface which is required for silicon epitaxy. Lapping was carried out with about 30-µ boron carbide abrasives to obtain a flat coplanar surface. The lapped surface was further polished using successively finer grades of alumina, ending with the 0.3-µ grade. After polishing the wafers generally have a flatness of ±0.4 µ per cm, as revealed by interferometry. Fig. 1 shows (111) oriented MgA12O4 spinel wafers of various shapes.

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). The "allowed" bcc reciprocal lattice points (which comprise an fcc lattice) are (110), (2001, (211), (220), (310), (2221, (321), (4001, and so forth. The combination

The notch sensitivity of titanium alloys is affected by impurity content, microstructure, and heat treatment. Using notch tensile properties to evaluate notch sensitivity, three commercial titanium-base alloys were investigated over the temperature range of -320o to 390°F. The alloys studied were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo. Six interstitial levels were studied for each alloy in four mi-crostmctural conditions. The ff- 0 alloys were studied in both the annealed and heat-treated condition. All tests were conducted using 1/4-in. diam round tensile samples. The notched samples had a 50 pct notch with a notch sharpness (a/r) of 53, corresponding to Kt 6.3. Notch sensitivity was increased by increased interstitial content, low temperature, and acicular-type microstructures. The heat-treated, high-interstitial content - 13 alloys were more notch sensitive than the same alloys in the annealed condition. In addition, minima in the notch tensile-temperature curves were observed at temperatures near 32°F. These minima became more pronounced with increasing interstitial content. 1 HE increaseduse of titanium alloys in high strength applications at subzero temperatures requires that a better under standing of the low-temperature behavior of the alloys be obtained. At low temperatures, metals generally exhibit increased strength with lowered ductility and tohness. Notch sensitivity and the factors which influence it become more important as the strength level is increased and the temperature is decreased. Some of the factor s which affect notch sensitivity in ti- tanium alloys are composition, interstitial content, microstructure, and heat-treatment condition. In this paper, the results of a study of these variables on the notch sensitivity of three titanium alloys at temperatures from —320o to 390o are reported. The notch geometry selected for this program was chosen to provide a severe test of notch sensitivity. The ability of the metal to flow without initiating fracture under these severe conditions is reflected in the notch-strength values. Since notch strength is, in part, determined by the constraint exerted by the combined tensile stresses, the behavior of notch specimens reflects the properties of the material under combined stresses. For example, a material with a high notch-unnotch strength ratio may be expected to withstand the biaxial stresses encountered in a pressure vessel better than a material with a low ratio of notch-unnotch strengths. This implies that maximum strength alone is not a sufficient criterion for applications of this type. It further may be concluded that the various conditions that promote poor notch behavior also will affect adversely the performance of materials under combined stresses. In the alloys studied, these included low temperatures, high interstitial levels, and hasformed microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Three alloys, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-2Fe-2Cr-2Mo, were purchased from commercial producers as 2-in.-dam rod stock. Oxygen and nitrogen were added to these alloys by remelting to obtain a variety of interstitial contents as shown in Table I. In order to Compensate for the much more potent strengthening effect of nitrogen compared with oxygen, an oxygen equivalent content is used to describe the total oxygen plus nitrogen contents studied. The magnetic powder method, long used for roughly mapping magnetic fields, has recently been refined1, "or investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter2 first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators:' have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the variation of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement ill the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing considerable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickel5 single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure. Specimens The following list describes the specimens used in the present investigation. Designation Description A1 Silicon ferrite furnished to us by Dr. W. E. Ruder, of the General Electric Co., for which lie gave the following typical analysis: C, 0.05; P, 0.038; S, 0.026; Mn, 0.15; Si, 3.24. Disk, 0.60 cm. diameter, about 0.05 cm. thick. By X-ray analysis angles between disk normal and [100] 75o, [0101 76" [00l] 21o. A2 Same as A1 except: diameter 0.75 cm. A, Same as A1 except: diameter 0.68 cm.

Much of the ground to be covered by this paper was ably covered by a paper presented by Messrs. Morrow and Jordan1 before a joint meeting of the Iron and Steel Section of the Engineers Society of West-ern Pennsylvania and the A.I.M.E. Pitts-burgh Section at Pittsburgh in the spring of 1940. As that paper was not published, the present authors have availed them-selves of Mr. Morrow's kind permission to use information given therein. Similar figures for the latest years available have been added to many statistics originally presented. It is unfortunate that Mr. Jordan's death removes his stimulating guidance and help, which the authors would have welcomed and have found invaluable in the past. One interested in the Pittsburgh seam should not fail to read the exhaustive and authoritative paper by Eavenson2 presented in 1938. As Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties contain practically all the reserves and furnish nearly all of the production from the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania at the present time, this area only is intended when reference is made to the Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania. On much of the seam in Greene and Washington Counties, which contain a large proportion of the total reserves, insufficient data are available to determine the detailed characteristics of the seam with any degree of finality. It is hoped that the data presented here will fairly well indicate the probable characteristics. Economic Importance of the Pittsburgh Seam The Pittsburgh seam in Pennsylvania is of primary importance as a coal resource, not only because of its substantial reserves but because it contributes such a large proportion of the coal used in the country and an even larger proportion of that used in the manufacture of coke. Mr. Ashley3 placed the estimated recoverable reserves (1935) of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania at 7,500,000,000 tons.* Although a considerable portion of this tonnage is not now suitable for coking coal, because of its high sulphur content, undoubtedly the supply of coking coal will last for many years and that not suitable for coking will furnish industry with an ample supply of energy. In attempting to assess the contribution of the Pittsburgh seam to total coal production and to that of coal used in making coke, one finds that the statistics published annually by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Minerals Yearbook, do not give tonnages classified as to seams but only as to districts or states and counties. However, it happens that, at present and during much of the

The major portion of the work described in this paper was performed by R. W. Young, † a graduate student in the department of Mining and Metallurgy, Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, working under a cooperative agreement between the Hardinge Conical Mill Co., the Sheffield Scientific School, and himself. Since this cooperative scheme is at present in effect in the case of a considerable number of other students in the department and since it is the hope of the school that the privilege thus extended may be utilized even more freely in the future by mining and manufacturing companies, it may not be amiss at this point to give a summary of the general plan. Briefly it is as follows: A graduate student, whose undergraduate work in this or other universities shows promise of ability to handle research work, is chosen by conference between the company and instructor involved. The aim of the company in the agreement then entered into is to obtain the solution of one or more of the technical problems with which it may be confronted, or, at the end of 1 or 2 years, to obtain as an employee a man especially trained in its work. As a means to accomplish one or both of these ends, the company furnishes the machine, apparatus, or material to be tested and pays the student during his graduate work a small salary, usually just sufficient to cover his living expenses, tuition and fees. The aim of the student is special training along a line in which he is particularly interested, the attainment of his advanced degree, and the chance to show to his future employer ability to handle such problems as may be presented to him. In return for the financial aid which he receives he agrees to devote at least half of his working time to the special problem submitted by his company. The other half is devoted to study of the collateral subjects required by the department for the granting of the degree which the student seeks. The student further agrees to enter the employ of the company in question at a wage not greater than that paid in like positions to recent graduates not specially trained and to remain with his employer at such wage for at east 1 year. If the student is to obtain a degree, the special work forming the basis of his investigation must be such as will involve real research and not mere routine manipulation. The subject is chosen by conference between the three parties to the agreement. The work is carried on under the direct supervision of the instructor involved. The school furnishes the general laboratory and library equipment essential to the pursuit of any extended investigation. In

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

The effect of small amounts of columbium (<0.01 to 0.10 pct) on the ?-a transformation occurring during the continuous cooling of a low carbon Ni-Cu steel was investigated. Dilatometer specimens were aus-tenitized at 950" and 1068?C and cooled at 17? and 375 C° per min. Columbium caused a marked depression in the ?-a transformation temperature except when cooling at the slower rate from 950°C. The effec of columbium on the transformation temperature was greater the higher the austenitizing temperature and rate of cooling. A maximum depression of 92 C" was observed. Metallographic examination of specimens of <0.01 and 0.07pct Cb steels heated at 1200°C for 1 hr and cooled at various rates showed that columbium had a major effect on the ferrite morphology. The fer rite in the columbium -free steel remained equiaxed at cooling rates as high as 440 C? per min while the columbium-bearing steel exhibited mixed structures o equiaxed and bainitic ferrite at cooling rates as low as 130 C° per min. The ? grain boundaries in the columbium -free steel provided the ferrite nucleation sites in rapidly cooled specimens. There was a complete absence of nucleation at these sites in the colum bium-bearing steel. It is concluded that columbium depresses the transformation temperature by suppressing ferrite nucleation at the austenite grain bound-aries. In this respect the effects of columbium are analogous to those of boron in low C-Mo steels. It is well known that small columbium additions can substantially strengthen plain carbon steels. As little as 0.02 pct Cb can increase the yield strength of mild steels by 10,000 psi.1 A fine precipitate of CbC has been observed in columbium-bearing steels2 and is generally thought to be responsible for the strengthening. Little attention has been devoted to the effect of columbium on the ?-a transformation. Webster and woodhead3 have studied the effect of columbium on the isothermal proeutectoid ferrite reaction in mild steels. They found similar transformation behavior in steels both with and without columbium additions. However, as the austenitizing temperature increased, the incubation time for the start of the ferrite transformation became longer in the columbium-containing steel. Morrison1 found that the addition of 0.03 pct Cb to a C-Mn steel lowered the transformation temperature by 50 C° during cooling from 1200°C at a rate of 80 C" per min. The strengthening effect of columbium has recently been utilized in an age-hardenable, low-alloy steel containing copper and nickel.4 A small amount of columbium has a substantial effect on the as-rolled strength of this steel. By increasing the columbium level from <0.01 to 0.13 pct the as-rolled yield strength is increased by 15,000 psi. Columbium also significantly lowers the ?-to-a transformation temperature of this steel during continuous cooling from the austenitizing temperature. Because of the low carbon level in this steel (0.05 pct max), it is almost entirely ferritic. Thus, it offers the opportunity of studying the effect of small columbium additions on the proeutectoid ferrite reaction. Of particular interest in this study was the reason for the marked lowering of the transformation temperature by columbium during continuous cooling. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The compositions of the steels used in this investigation are shown in Table I. The steels were 30-lb air induction melts. They were forged to 4 by 8 by 1 in. plate at 1230°C, air cooled, and then reheated to 1230°C and cross-rolled in two passes to in. plates. Dilatometry. A Leitz Bollenrath dilatometer was used to record the transformation during continuous cooling from two different austenitizing temperatures. The dilatometer specimens were + in. in diam and 2 in. long. Oxidation and decarburization of the specimens was prevented by maintaining a small positive pressure of dry argon in the dilatometer furnace and by plating the specimens with 1 mil of Cu. For the lowest cooling rate, 17 C" per min, the temperature of the specimen was measured with a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple placed in a & in. diam well in the center of the specimen. During air cooling, 375 C° per min, this method of measuring the temperature interfered with the operation of the dilatometer. However, it was found that the temperature of the specimen could be measured accurately by placing a thermocouple in an identical specimen in a holder adjacent to the one being used to operate the dilatometer mechanism. The dilation-temperature curves were recorded on photographic film and then converted to volume percent ferrite-vs-temper-ature curves. An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash contents of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from five preparation plants in the northern Appalachian region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coals suit-able for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by the Cendrex for all the products tested. A principal disadvantage of coal in competition with other fuels has been its inconsistent quality, especially with respect to ash content. Mine rnechanization and production from coalbeds of inferior quality have accentuated this failing. Present quality control methods in coal preparation plants are inadequate because (1) control samples taken over a production shift only serve to give the average quality of the product, (2) conventional sampling and analysis data are usually not available at the time a shipment is scheduled, and (3) the plant operator does not have the use of such data when the coal is being processed so that operating conditions may be adjusted for correcting variations in quality. Thus, the development and use of continuous-control monitoring instruments is of prime importance. The Federal Bureau of Mines arranged to investigate an instrument using x-rays for rapid continuous ash determinations. Developed by the Dutch State Mines and first described in 1958,&apos; this instrument, which has found widespread acceptance in Europe, is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal feed or product stream with only a five-minute time lag between sample collection and analytical results. With limit controls, this unit could be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of coal samples taken in the usual manner. THEORY Di jkstra and Sieswerda of the Dutch State Mines studied the effect of chemical composition and ash content on the absorption coefficient of coal with the transmitted radiation method.&apos; They found that with an X-ray wavelength of 1.79 A and values calculated for the absorption coefficients of ash and combustibles, the absorption coefficient of coal gave a linear relationship when plotted against the ash content. Thus, a method of measuring the absorption coefficient of coal could also be used to measure the ash content. However, practical attempts to measure the ash content of coal by comparing the intensities of the transmitted X-rays failed. The absorption coefficient of coal can also be obtained by irradiating a layer of coal with x-rays and measuring the intensity of the diffused reflection (backscatter method). The relationship between the diffused reflection and the ash content is actually hyperbolic but approximates a straight line over a narrow range. A measuring circuit that balanced the difference in intensity of the reflected radiation from a standard surface against that from a coal sample was used. By plotting this difference of reflected radiation against the ash content, a curve which approximated a straight line over a range of 8 percentage points of ash was obtained. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT The apparatus performs two distinct functions: (1) the preparation of the sample to a suitable size consist and moisture content for delivery to the x-ray element, and (2) the measurement of the ash content by the x-ray element. In a continuous operation the coal sample is delivered to a conditioner where it is dried to a maximum of 1% surface moisture and pulverized in a high speed mill to -48-mesh. This material is fed, at a rate of 250-300 gpm onto a rotating disk, shown in Fig. 1, where it is mixed with material already present. The mixture is rotated on the disk and

The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner&apos;s prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. IN 1947 the author became interested in the fundamental aspects of the desilverizing of lead by zinc, conducted some experimental work, and searched the technical literature for all available fundamental data. Since then a revival of interest in the subject in Europe resulted in the appearance of quite a number of papers. It became evident that it would be more profitable to collect together and examine thoroughly the results of various workers, than to attempt to duplicate the experimental determinations. There are many inconsistencies in the various publications, and it is opportune to review at this time the present status of knowledge on the Ag-Pb-Zn system. There is also a need for a clear description, in fundamental terms, of the various desilverizing procedures. This paper is presented in four sections: 1—There is an historical review of the origins of the Parkes process, of the results of many attempts to find a satisfactory fundamental explanation for the phenomena, and of the modifications proposed to date. 2—A diagram of the Ag-Pb-Zn system is presented. This is believed to be free of obvious inconsistencies or theoretical impossibilities, although thermodynamic analysis subsequently may reveal errors. 3—The fundamental bases of the various desilverizing procedures, which have been used up to the present day, are described; and a new method is suggested for desilverizing a continuous flow of softened bullion in which the bullion is stirred at a low temperature in two stages producing desilverized lead at least as low in silver as that from the Williams continuous process and a crust which, on liquation, yields a very high-silver Ag-Zn alloy. 4—A suggestion is made for the revival of de-golding practice, following a recently published account which does not seem to have attracted the attention it deserves. The terms "eutectic trough" and "peritectic fold" as used in this paper are synonymous with "line of binary eutectic crystallization" and "line of binary peritectic crystallization" as used by Masing.&apos; The German literature on ternary and higher systems is rather extensive and a fairly general system of nomenclature has arisen, whereas in English usage the corresponding terms are not as well established. For this reason the meanings of terms used in this paper, together with the equivalent German terms, are given as follows: 1—Eutectic trough—eutektische rinne: line at which a liquid precipitates two solids S1 and S2 simultaneously. If the composition of a liquid which is cooling reaches this line, it then follows the course of this line until a eutectic point is reached, or until all the liquid is exhausted. The tangent to the eutec-tic trough cuts the line joining S1S2. 2—Peritectic fold—peritektische rinne: line at which a solid S1 and a liquid L transform into another solid S2. If the composition of a liquid which is precipitating S1 reaches the line, on further cooling only S2 is precipitated. The liquid composition moves from one phase region (L + S1) into the other (L + S2), and does not follow the course of the boundary. The tangent to the peritectic fold cuts the line S1S2 produced nearer S,. 3—Liquid miscibility gap, or conjugate solution region—mischungslucke: the region within which two liquid phases coexist in equilibrium over a certain range of temperature. A system whose composition is represented by a point in this region comprises one liquid at high temperature; then as the temperature is progressively reduced, two liquids, one liquid and one solid, one liquid and two solids, and finally three solids. 4—Liquid miscibility gap boundary—begrenzung der flussigen mischungsliicke: the line along which the surface of the miscibility gap dome, considered as a solid model, intersects the surrounding liquidus surfaces. 5—Tie lines—konoden: lines joining points representing the compositions of two liquids, a liquid and a solid, or two solids, in equilibrium. In binary systems the only tie lines customarily drawn are those through invariant points, e.g., through the eutectics of the Pb-Zn and Ag-Pb systems, or the various peritectics of the Ag-Zn system, as in Figs. 1 to 3. In ternary systems it is desirable to draw sufficient tie lines to indicate the slopes of all possible tie lines. 6—Ternary eutectic point—ternares eutektikum: point at which liquid transforms isothermally to three solids, S1, S2, and S Such a point can lie only within the triangle 7—Invariant peritectic (transformation) point— nonvariante peritektische umsetzungspunkt: (a) — On the miscibility gap boundary, the point at which two liquids and two solids react isothermally so that L, + S, + L, + S2. (b)—On the eutectic trough, the point at which a liquid and three solids react iso-thermally so that L + S, + S2 + S3. A study was made of the effects of small quantities of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of colum-bium. Tensile specimens, hydrogenated to concentrations of 20 to 200 ppm, were tested at temperatures of 300°, 191°, and 77°K. Although hydrogen was found to have little effect on the strength of columbium, the ductility of Cb-H alloys was found to be quite sensitive to both hydrogen concentration and temperature. At 300°K, an abrupt loss in ductility occurred at a critical hydrogen concentration, although some ductility was observed beyond the tolerance limit. A similar result was found at a lower hydrogen concentration at 191°K. At 77°K, however, a more gradual loss in ductility with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. Hydrogenated columbium was thus observed to undergo a ductile-brittle-ductile transition. Metallographic examination of fractured specimens revealed extensive porosity at both 77° and300°K which was a distinct function of hydrogen content. At 191°K, although some secondary cracking was noted, the amount of observed porosity was minimal. These observations are interpreted in terms of hydrogen solubility and mobility as a function of temperature and in the role of hydrogen in promoting growth of microcracks. lHE effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of the refractory metals is not, at present, completely understood. A number of studies have shown these materials to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Roberts and Rogers1 have found that vanadium can be embrittled by hydrogen. It was further demonstrated that fracture undergoes a ductile-brittle-ductile transition as the temperature is lowered from 150° to -196°C; i.e., there is a ductility minimum observed at a certain temperature. The ductility is increased by either raising or lowering the temperature from this point. A more complete study by Eustice and Carlson2 on vanadium containing 10 to 800 ppm placed the ductility minimum at about -100°C with variations reportedly due to hydrogen content and strain rate. Ductility minima have also been found at certain temperatures for tantalum containing 7 ppm H3 and 140 ppm H.4 At hydrogen concentrations above 270 ppm, however, the ductility return at low temperatures was considerably reduced.4 In the case of columbium, some disagreement exists in the literature. Eustice and Carlson,5 Wilcox et al.,6 and Imgram et al.4 failed to find a ductility minimum although a composition-dependent ductile-brittle transition was observed. Hydrogen concentrations in these investigations were 20 ppm,5 1 to 30 ppm,6 and 200 to 390 ppm.4 However, Wood and Daniels7 observed a rather pronounced ductility minimum at hydrogen contents ranging from 19 to 252 ppm. Those theories of hydrogen embrittlement involving the precipitation of diatomic hydrogen which have been applies to ferrous metals8-12 do not seem to be applicable to the case of columbium and other exothermic occluders. Such theories propose that extensive crack formation and propagation occurs by the precipitation and expansion of diatomic hydrogen at internal voids and microcracks. However, photomicrographs of hydrogenated columbium do not show any evidence of damage introduced by the sorption and precipitation of diatomic hydrogen; rather, at high hydrogen concentrations, a hydrogen-rich second phase is precipitated.13&apos;14 In addition, a number of these theories require the development of high hydrogen pressures at voids in the structure.8&apos;10&apos;12 This does not appear to be feasible in the concentration ranges discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs. The possible interaction of atomic hydrogen with microcracks resulting from dislocation pile-ups15,16 remains in doubt since pile-ups have not been observed in bcc metals17 including columbium.18 Wood and Daniels7 have put forth the possibility that a hydride precipitation could be responsible for crack nucleation in columbium. Work by Longson19 has shown that hydrogen embrittlement of columbium parallels the bulk solubility limit; i.e., as the solubility increases, for instance with temperature, the amount of hydrogen necessary to cause embrittlement also increases. Although a hydride precipitation appears attractive as a means of nucleating microcracks in columbium, what require more intensive study are the low-temperature anomalies which have been observed, i.e., the ductile-brittle-d&apos;ictile transition characteristics. Also, the hydrogen concentrations where embrittlement occurs are often below the bulk solubility limits determined by Albrecht et al.13,14 and Walter and Chandler.20 This work is an attempt to determine more definitively the effects of concentration and temperature on the mechanical properties of dilute Cb-H alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ultrahigh-purity columbium rods, obtained from the Wah Chang Corp., were cold-reduced by rotary swaging. A chemical analysis is given in Table I. The material was cut into cylindrical blanks 1.50 ±0.005 in. long. Individual specimens were either given a stress relief anneal at 750°C or recrystal-lized at 1200°C. Resulting microstructures were either a "bamboo" structure characteristic of a wrought material or a recrystallized structure with a grain diameter of approximately 100 n. All heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr or less.

Oil recovery by the imbibition mechanism can be important in fractured carbonate reservoirs with a bottom water drive. Laboratory experiments were performed on water-wet carbonate rocks to model this process. The results are interpreted in light of the applicable scaling laws. The imbibition production behavior of a pillar of rock subjected to a slowly rising water table can be synthesized from data on total immersion experiments on small rock samples. If the rate of water table rise is slow enough and if the physical properties are such that the imbibition zone is of a small vertical extent, then only the final oil recovery on the small samples need be known. Applying laboratory imbibition data to a real reservoir should be done with caution because of possible wettability problems and the unknown behavior of two-phase flow in fractures. INTRODUCTION The spontaneous taking up of a preferential wetting fluid into a porous medium with the simultaneous expulsion of the contained fluid is termed imbibition. One of the many physical imbibition processes is the production of oil by the taking up of water into a water-wet reservoir rock. In certain types of heterogeneous reservoirs, e.g., fractured, it is realized that imbibition alone may be the dominant mechanism. Theoretical studies of imbibition oil recovery have followed several lines of attack. The behavior of certain mathematically tractable and conceptually simple models have been analyzed. Birks1 considered a bundle of vertical capillaries model, while Perotti et al.2 and Kelemen3 used a model of a series of vertically oriented fractures. If the oil production behavior from a block of reservoir rock is known, then the cumulative behavior of a vertical stack of these blocks subjected to a rising water table can be determined by a method outlined by Aronofsky et al. 4 Knowing the capillary pressure and relative permeability functions should uniquely set the imbibition behavior for a given sample. Solutions of the partial differential equations describing the process, however, present some formidable problems. Digital computer techniques have been applied to displacement processes in which the capillary pressure has been included.5"8 More recently, similar techniques have been used by Blair 9 to calculate countercurrent imbibition behavior. The fact that imbibition behavior is described by the usual fluid flow equations (Darcy&apos;s Law and continuity equation) implies that the derived scaling laws should apply equally to this situation. Use of model experiments to study imbibition has been employed by Graham and Richardson 10 and Mattax and Kyte,11 who actually tested the scaling law applicability. This study is concerned with scaled model imbibition experiments on water-wet carbonate rocks. Of particular interest is the slowly rising water table experiment. This simulates a highly fractured reservoir with the water table rising uniformly through the vertical fracture system. Experiments were performed on different sized samples and with different rates of rise of the water-oil interface surrounding the rock pillar. Total immersion imbibition experiments on smaller rock samples were performed to test the basic linear scaling laws and to see if these simpler tests could be used to synthesize the rising water table experimental results. THEORY IMBIBITION SCALING LAWS Scaling laws for the flow of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a porous medium have been presented by Rapoport.12 These are derived directly from Darcy&apos;s Law for the individual phases and the continuity equation. Results from a laboratory model experiment will duplicate those from some reservoir prototype if a constant proportion is maintained among the three forces acting on the fluids — the capillary pressure gradient, the gravitational gradient and the flowing pressure gradient.
