RECOGNITION of the benefits to be gained from the continuous casting of molten steel into finished or semifinished products has been given by scientific minds since the very beginnings of steel plant technology. In fact, Sir Henry Bessemer is credited with the first of a long list of patents' issued by the U. S. Patent Office for a process which would accomplish this desirable end. None of these early ideas attained practical success and, as a result, the conventional method of teeming into ingot molds became an integral part of modern steelmaking operations. This procedure, although refined to keep pace with the changes which have come about in steelmaking and finishing facilities, is recognized to have inherent shortcomings which adversely affect manufacturing costs and steel quality. Interest in the continuous casting of steel persists because the process is directed toward avoiding some obvious weaknesses of conventional ingot casting. It has been recognized that should it be possible to substitute any of the continuous casting techniques under current development for ingot casting, it would no longer be necessary to make large capital investments in primary rolling equipment, the sole purpose of which is to reduce ingot castings to a form rollable on finishing mills. The results reported in the continuous casting of non-ferrous metals and specialty steels indicate that in addition to avoiding the primary rolling mills there is some basis for expecting significant improvements in yield, surface, and internal quality. Recognizing the shortcomings of the conventional procedures, the Inland Steel Co., in cooperation with Atlas Steels Ltd. and the Freyn Dept. of the Kop- pers Co. Inc., embarked upon a program to evaluate certain aspects of continuous casting in order to determine whether the process could be applied practically to an existing integrated steel plant producing 'large tonnages of carbon steels. TO assist in this evaluation a study was carried out in which several types of low carbon steel were continuously cast in an existing machine. It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the results obtained in the casting studies and to interpret the information that was obtained so as to indicate factors that must be considered in assessing operating limitations and plant capacities. Despite the early interest in the continuous casting of steel, the actual application to the steel industry is relatively recent. At present, there are about 25 operating plants casting steel, most of which have been built in the past decade. None of these plants could be classified as large in terms of the tonnages that are being processed by the major integrated steel plants. In contrast to the situation in the steel industry, there has been widespread adoption of the continuous process in the casting of nonferrous alloys, particularly aluminum and copper. As a result, much of the basic information that was required to apply the process to steel was developed in the nonferrous industries. In this respect, a most important contribution was the development of the Junghans2 system, which was initially designed for the casting of nonferrous metals and later applied to the casting of steel. Alternative methods for casting have also been proposed by Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.,'" the British Iron and Steel Research Association,5 and the Gebruder Bohler A. G.13 Each of these methods is now being used successfully for the casting of special steels in small experimental plants or in modest sized commercial steelworks. INTRODUCTION. NOTWITHSTANDING the growing importance of this subject, no work specially devoted to it has hitherto been published. Having had to inspect during the last twenty years nearly a million tons of iron and steel rails for various countries, I have obtained experience of what rail manufacturers can practically execute, as well as of what railway engineers practically require. Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests, -that of the producer and that of the consumer,-and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years ; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to me, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. In accordance with the usual custom, manuscripts to be presented at the next meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the, Secretary before July 1, 1917. Manuscripts to be properly distributed in advance of the meeting must be in the hands of the Secretary before June 1, 1917. At the last meeting of the Institute 45 papers were presented, and 42 of them were actively discussed. This experience makes us believe that advance distribution is the best possible means of getting a good discussion of papers and of securing for them the interest of the members of the profession. It will be impossible, however, to give the papers proper distribution if they bare not received before June 1, 1917.

THIS short discussion of the effects of deoxidation on the mechanical properties of cast steels is intended to serve as general introduction to the subject of this afternoon's session. The subject is covered in detail in Mr. Carter's excellent paper. My material has been collected from the works of various investigators, several of whom are present today. For a definition of deoxidation, as applied to steel-furnace melting practice, we can best go to Briggs' book, "The Metallurgy of Steel Castings." Briggs says that deoxidation "includes all the phenomena in the final preparation of steel that would permit it to solidify free from gas cavities and from dissolved oxygen of all kinds." Various practices are used by welters to produce these end results.

No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

Although this is going to appear in the December Issue of &E, it is being written long before the end of the year. December, of course, is the time for a summing up of the year's activities. Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won't be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

The place of the young engineer in the mining industry has been the subject of a large number of keynote addresses, magazine articles, and papers in the past year. One of the best of these was the keynote address given by Mr. J. C. Kinnear, Jr. at the Fifth Annual Intermountain Minerals Conference in Vail. Colorado. Mr. Kinnear presented as part of his address the statistics of a Canadian survey Instigated to find out why young engineers and geologists are leaving the mining industry. The results of the survey showed four main reasons for leaving: 1) insufficient money 2) slow promotion 3) lack of association with senior engineers, as well as insufficient opportunity to keep abreast of technological development 4) geographic isolation

An evaluation of the operating performance of a recently designed pneumatic centrifugal classifier is presented. This classifier has been modified from a separate air and feed input design to an entrained solids in air feed input. The evaluation first required determining the size distributions for the three streams (feed, fine, and coarse). Using size distribution data and mass flow rates, a size selectivity curve was calculated for each operating condition tested. This curve, in turn, was characterized by appropriate selectivity parameters (i.e., the equiprobable or cut size, the sharpness index, and the apparent bypass values). The variation of these parameters with classifier operating conditions was examined. From these evaluations, the "best" operating conditions for the classifier were then determined.

Anderson over the Custer-Gallatin National Forests, besting the thin air of 10,000 ft p1us, they set down on Iron Plateau.

The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine design, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environmental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources.

Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) has been successfully applied to the recovery of gold and uranium from the residues of Witwatersrand ores. Good overall recoveries have been achieved for particles as small as 12µ, and finer particles of uranium minerals are recovered when present as inclusions. The best results were obtained with a matrix of soft-iron balls 6 mm in diameter. However, pilot-plant tests drew attention to a major defect of the machine: the matrix could be blocked by wood chips and ferromagnetic particles. This problem was overcome by the incorporation of a modification that allows the balls to be discharged from the rotating annulus. Two full-scale units that incorporate the modification have been installed.

An ore containing chalcopyrite was microbiologically leached in 6 ft columns at particle sizes ranging from -2 +1 ½ inches, to -3/8 + 3/16 inches. The rate of leaching increased exponentially as the particle size decreased. The controlling factor was the active leaching volume made up of the particle surface area and the depth of penetration of the bacteria and leach liquor into the particle. This volume became an increasingly larger part of the total volume as the particle size decreased. The sample under test leached poorly at larger particle sizes and it was calculated that under commercial conditions, it would produce at best a pregnant solution containing 100 mg/l (0.2 lb/ ton) of copper per 100 ft of dump height.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specified engineering design criteria which fully detail the proposed method of exploitation. The operational design of a mine falls essentially within the technical discipline of the mining engineer, under the constraint that the technical design should be aimed at optimizing the financial attractiveness of the project. In the case of a marginally viable proposition it becomes vitally necessary to identify the best set of design parameters which together will add up to an optimum investment proposal. This paper examines some fundamental logic of optimization for a "wasting asset" type of investment such as a mine, with special reference to the rate of annual production and the strategy of selective mining.

Localized open pit slope failure was avoided as an apparent result of a practical rock mechanics program conducted at the Twin Buttes copper operation. The key to the program was the application of cable bolting, a technique that artificially supports open pit slopes using properly installed post-tensioned cables. As a result of the research and testing program, extensions of the cable bolting principal became significantly apparent. • The economics of artificial stabilization appear to be overwhelmingly favorable, and • Best practical applications are "final" pit slopes, slopes beneath permanent structures and potentially slope failing areas. Success of this research is manifested by the fact that similar stabilization systems are presently under consideration for Twin Buttes as well as other open pit operations.

THERE is a considerable lack of data on thermody-namic properties of hard-metal alloys. Only two papers 1,2 give mean values of specific heat in an unknown temperature range; more recently the author3 gave more detailed information on the mean specific heat in the temperature range from 20" to -190° C.. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Method—Experimental procedure followed a method suggested by Oelsen and coworkers.4 It requires samples of some 100 g of weight. The time of measurement is prolonged (30 min) but one run allows the measurement of a lot of positions on the heat-content curve. Results4 were found to be in good agreement with "best values" given by kelley,5 Kubaschewsky and Evans,6 etal.

This paper describes an experimental method for monitoring diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a deadended drift to assess the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 32 m long and slightly downsloping, with an everage height and width of 2.4 and 8.6 m, respectively. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generate pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined.
