INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Most oxidized manganiferous silver ores contain manganese associated with silver and are not amenable to conventional silver extraction methods, including direct standard cyanidation techniques. However, it is known that dissolution of the manganese might yield a suitable material from which silver can be recovered by conventional methods. In the segregation process, which involves heating the ore with a small quantity of salt and with a source of reducing agent to 680°C - 800°C, the silver is volatilized, migrates and is reduced to metallic silver particles. Conventional cyanide leaching is applied to the resulting calcine. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02 % Cu, 0.09 % Pb, 0.33 % Zn, 12.55 % Mn and 187 g/ton Ag to study the influence of roasting temperature and time, quantity of salt and quantity of coke on silver extraction by the application of segregation roasting followed by cyanidation. Cyanide leaching tests were carried out at room temperature on the segregated calcines produced by using an alkaline cyanide solution containing 2.0 lb/ton of NaCN at pH 11 for 72 hours. The results indicated that 97.8 % of silver extraction can be attained at 850°C, with 2.0 % salt, 1.0 % Coke and 30 minutes of roasting time.

The stability of pillars in old mined-out districts is greatly dependent on the weathering action caused by moisture penetration into the pillar structure. Field observations in old mining districts indicated that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of the stability of the pillar if the coal seam contains parting or binder (layers of claystone or mudstone). The weathering action caused by moisture penetration over a long period of time degrades both parting and coal. However, it has been observed that the structural deterioration is more severe in parting. Moisture-penetration rates in parting and coal are different. The extent of the weathered zone in various layers of the pillar is primarily time dependent. This paper investigates, both in the laboratory and in the field, the effects of weathering action on coal and parting. In the laboratory, slake durability indices and uniaxial compressive strength tests for dry and saturated specimens are compared for coal. In the field, the in situ strength profiles for coal and parting layers are obtained, and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on the strength profiles is studied An attempt was also made to establish formulae for time-dependent strengths of coal and parting.

The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.

The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. SELECTION OF A PROBABILISTIC APPROACH AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE It Is essential to differentiate probabilistic sampling from non-probabilistic sampling. A probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with a same probability of being selected. 2. Thickeners are simply large tanks, usually circular in shape, which are designed to allow settling of solids and to operate with continuous overflow of clear water and underflow of thick pulp. The dimensions of the thickener are usually such that dewatering of very fine pulps may be accomplished while still 1 overflowing clear water. Some thickeners such as the Genter, Hardinge and Hydrotator types combine thickening with filtering2 while others such as the Dorr type are pure thickenersl,2,3. A schematic diagram of the traction type Dorr thickener is shown in Figure 1. This type is appropriate for tanks over 15 m (50 ft) in diameter. This tank employs a rotating raking mechanism which moves the settled material toward the central discharge. For this and other thickeners, it is common to have a shallow conical tank bottom in order to conform to the geometry of the raking mechanism, and it is often desirable to elevate the tank for ease of access to the product. When the tank does not rest on the ground, the forces resisted by the cone are large, and thick plates must be employed. The fabrication of these tanks requires temporary supports in order to erect the cone. A flat-bottomed tank could also be used because the settled material would soon form a hardened conical surface. However, because of the presence of large bending forces, even larger plate thicknesses are required than for the conical bottom. Significant cost savings often can be realized by the use of a scalloped-bottomed tank such as the one partially shown in Figure 2. The particular scalloped bottom discussed in this paper (and shown in the Figure) employs radial beams forming the outline of the cone-shaped bottom. These beams are supported directly by columns. Cone segments are hung between adjacent beams. The exact geometry of these segments depends upon the cone angle and radius, the number of radial beams, and their inclination. The geometry is chosen to satisfy certain clearance restraints and to utilize the material as efficiently as possible. 2.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides the reader with a sense of how a heap leach project may make an orderly, and hopefully non-traumatic, transition from discovery or acquisition to project construction. In making this transition a project can pass through several project development phases (i.e. ore definition and delineation, conceptual engineering, detailed engineering, and ultimately on to project construction and operation). "Go" or "no go" decisions may occur at any point in each of these phases. The transition from ore definition to detailed engineering should be accomplished via a well thought out program of interdisciplinary studies and an integrated, interdisciplinary project team. This chapter also describes, in general terms, a "roadmap" approach to the project evaluation process that must occur as project planning and development progress. It is the experience of the authors, as well as a myriad of companies who have been through the heap leach project development process, that a systematic approach will save many headaches, and many dollars. In fact, it is safe to say that a project with no formalized system of "objectives setting" and "milestone charting" may well flounder along the way, even if an economic ore body exists. Many papers and technical articles have been written about various aspects of mineral resource appraisal, economic evaluation, and mine development. Most of these invoke the same general philosophy of a systematic approach to project evaluation and development, although methods cited for attaining goals are quite variable. This is undoubtedly appropriate, given the fact that there is great variation in approach to project development (e.g., climatic considerations, ore body size and physical ore characteristics, permitting constraints, etc.). For the purposes of this chapter, two primary sources of information have been used to highlight the "road map" approach previously alluded to. These sources are cited throughout the text as Mackenzie (1980) and Snow and Michel s (1986). A brief summary of each of these sources is provided below: Brian GJ. The apatite deposits in east-central Bahia, Brazil, are about 50 km east of Serra do Jacobina, between lat. 11° and 12° S. and long. 39°40' and 40° W. Apatite was found and examined at 15 localities in a mineralized belt that strikes about N.25° - 30 W. over a distance of about 100 km, but the size of the deposits has not yet been determined. Rocks of the region consist of a sequence of Precambrian migmatites and quartz feldspar paragneisses containing units of pyroxene-rich rocks, lenses of sillimanite-bearing quartzite, amphibolite zones, and calc-silicate marble lenses. Pegmatites and granites of probable anatectic origin (anatexite) are abundant. Faults are numerous. Clastic sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary ages cover most of the area; thus, outcrops of the Precambrian rocks are sparse. Trenches and pits have exposed mineralized zones as much as 10 m wide at some localities within the region. A layer of apatite at least 1 ½ m thick is exposed in a trench at Lagoa do Mel. At Rio do Peixe, vertical shafts have penetrated a mineralized zone, to a depth of as much as 13 m, of which about 25 percent is apatite. Apatite is massive or forms minute crystals, stringers, and disseminated grains in alkalic host rocks. At Apolinario, euhedral crystals of apatite are as much as 50 cm long and 30 cm in diameter. Associated minerals include vermiculite, biotite, scapolite, opal, chalcedony, epidote, montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, sericite, magnetite, and limonite. Apatite is everywhere intimately associated with pyroxene-rich rocks, alkalic syenite pegmatites, and alkalic granite pegmatites. At Panelas-Retiro, apatite is associated with pegmatites, crystalline calcite (vein calcite), vermiculite, and pyroxene-bearing rocks. Analyses of samples show that the apatite is radioactive and rare-earth-bearing. Traces of vanadium and titanium were detected by spectroscopic analysis. The apatite was probably derived from phosphatic zones in the original Precambrian sedimentary rocks and has been crystallized and some mobilized by high-temperature regional metamorphism (higher amphibolite facies) into veins, pegmatites, and along certain preferred beds and fractures. Radiometric and geophysical surveys, in addition to conventional geological investigations, are planned to further investigate the nature and economic potential of the deposits.

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. Automation and mechanization in mining has no value of its own. It has to be measured in economic terms or in Increased safety or in the utilization of deposits which otherwise were unavailable. The mechanization and automation of workphases in the mining and rock construction process has led to the decrease of manual work. This has had a very essential importance in the countries where the labor is expensive or where there has been difficulties in the availability of labor. The work has become much more efficient. We would like to argue that the need of mechanization has been initiated mostly from the above mentioned reasons. The origin has seldom been the "process" approach or the real need or will to change the way mining is done. Through mechanization bigger unit sizes of machines and operations have become possible and better efficiency is achieved. This has led to new problems as well, but in most cases they have been solved so that better and more economic outcome than before has been the end result. The changes have thus been justified. It is perhaps feasible to state already at this stage that we see that the mechanization andautomation steps in the difficult conditions of mining have been remarkable. There is not a slightest underestimation of the achievements and importance of this development in our mind. Where we are to- day is the result of the experience, know-how and technological excellency of all the parties involved. The natural approach to automation has been through mechanization and automation of individual unit operations and machines. This has been the way as well in manufacturing industry as in mining. There may not have been any other way. The other presentations in this session tell us very clearly of the approach .which the machine manufacturers have taken. They have not done it alone but 'most of the initiatives have come from them. A good use of their present achievements gives many possibilities to increase the, efficiency in mining. We would, however, like to extend the view one step further to the future:

Introduction Coal preparation plants are continuously losing clean coal in their refuse and contaminating their clean coal product with impurities. This is due to the lack of a system by which the immediate efficiency of the cleaning operation can be determined at any given time. Moreover, the advantage of developing tagging/ tracing techniques would be a reduction in the time and money spent in evaluating the performance of advanced cleaning techniques. Currently, conventional sampling and testing, on-line analyses, and computer information systems are the major tools with which engineers analyze and control the efficiency of processing plants. Conventional sampling and testing is an effective analysis technique but it is slow. On-line analysis provides information on quality parameters rapidly, but these parameters do not provide all of the necessary information. The use of tagged particles in coal preparation plants may provide the necessary link between diagnosis and the application of computers to process control. In this work, a novel technique that uses tagged particles to generate partition data is presented (Leonard et al., 1982). Individually prepared tagged particles are added to the feed and detected in the product or refuse port of specific gravity based processes. Providing that a computer can interpret the output of a detection device and trace particles with predetermined physical properties through the coal preparation plant and that the trace particles actually represent desired raw material, sufficient partition data can be provided for computer analyses and control of processing efficiency. Coal tagging technique The use of tagged particles in coal preparation operations are in the early stages of development. Though there is a brief history of particle tracing in the mineral processing industry (Gardner et al., 1986; Foreman and Amundson, 1976; Poston et al., 1962), the concept has not yet been applied to the analysis and control of processing plant operations. Several methods for tagging coal particles have been identified. These include magnetic, radioactive, and fluorescent techniques. As far as the magnetic tagging of coal particles is concerned, a method has been developed to manufacture synthetic magnetic particles of various sizes and specific gravities. Ideally the synthetic particles would have identical size and density as the coal particles being separated.

Gold, like no other metal, has a fascinating and special place in the world. It is used in a range of every day applications essential to modern life. Gold has long been considered the most precious metal in the world. Gold is used mainly for making jewellery as well as for dentistry, adornments on building and artistic expression. For thousands of years it has been used as an ornament of kings, a currency and standard for global currencies, and more recently, in a wide range of electronic devices and medical applications. Gold?s many unique properties have secured in a central role in history and human development. Today, more often than not, gold is extracted from ores. It occurs in vein and alluvial deposits and is often separated from rocks and other minerals by mining and processing operations. Some of these processes cause environmental concern (cyanidation, amalgamation, roasting). Besides primary gold ore resources, a series of secondary resources can be taken into account and processed for gold and silver recovery. There are two main types of waste produced. The first type is process waste, which includes tailing consisting of processing residues and waste rock. The other type is refuse from other different processes and recyclable materials. Among other secondary resources and/or by-products containing precious metals, which have been studied some processes and technologies with low ecological impact are presented in this paper. Heaps and tailing ponds resulted from gold-bearing ore exploitation and processing, refractory gold-bearing pyrite concentrates, slag resulted from electrolytic slime melting, gold-bearing chlorous slime are taken into account. In order to establish environmental friendly technologies for precious metals recovery from these secondary resources, laboratory experiments have been carried out on a pilot scale and in some cases on semi-industrial scale by applying specific technological processes, namely hydro-gravitational concentration, bio-oxidation, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (microwaves), solubilization without utilizing cyanide and gold recovery by ion-exchange resin. This paper presents the research results, technological principles as well as the possibilities of applying combined processes in order to treat different secondary gold-bearing resources.

INTRODUCTION An evaluation of the radiological health risks from uranium mining and milling requires the determination of several key parameters. As shown in Figure 1, the first step is the estimation of the radioactive source term. The radionuclides in the ore consist of the 238U decay series nuclides shown in Figure 2, the 235U series nuclides, and 40K. The 238U decay series isotopes dominate the source term, with the 235U series isotopes causing less concern and 40K remaining at background levels. [ ] Specifically, the risks from uranium mining and milling are mainly associated with 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn, and its short-lived daughters. These radioisotopes are mainly alpha-particle emitters; hence, some dispersion mechanism is necessary to bring them into intimate contact with man so that they can be inhaled or ingested For water pathways, the leaching of the isotopes from [ ] the solid ore or tailings provides a measure of the amount of contaminant initially available to the environment. For the air pathway, dust-creation mechanisms such as blasting, crushing or general resuspension processes dominate for 226Ra and 230Th. However, 222Rn, being a chemically inert gas generated from the decay of 226Ra, can migrate through the ore, overburden and tailings over considerable distances. As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the pathway to man is environmental dilution and delay. For the water transport mechanism, the delay in the isotopes reaching an accessible water supply may be considerable (several thousand years or more), but for airborne nuclides the dispersion in the atmosphere is rapid and constitutes the main mitigating factor. Considerable ventilation is provided in underground mines to dilute and remove radon and its daughters in order to keep their concentrations low and thereby minimize their inhalation by miners. The rate of uptake by both the workers and the general public is often difficult to ascertain. It involves breathing rates, rates of water consumption and other poorly-defined parameters. "In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

The most important difference between weathering and alteration, which are the definition of the change in rocks that occur with the help of physical and chemical effects, is a new product is formed as a result of alteration. Although atmospherical conditions are the most important factor during rock change, geothermal fields play a large role in the developing of alteration phenomenon. Because every geothermal system shows different characteristics including the chemistry of geothermal fluids and their potential applications, alteration on the field is important for the studies to find geothermal energy sources and to obtain the thermal fluids. The development of weathering and alteration which is the mark of interaction , between the physical and chemical properties of geothermal fluids and gases with the reservoir and wall rock, gives out important data about the hydrogeology, hydrology, reservoir conditions and characteristics of reservoir rocks of the geothermal field. Therefore defining the development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in a geothermal field and modeling the change in rocks, is very important for the benefication of the geothermal field economically. In this study 70 km2 that reside between Kösedere plains, Uzunburun, Çamtepe, Centirler villages in Çanakkale - Ayvacik - Tuzla geothermal field were studied and subsurface travel of saline thermal fluids and their interaction with the rocks and development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in the field were investigated. For this purpose geological mapping of the field were done and observations and measurements as well as rock sampling were carried in locations more than 220. As the result of petrographical investigations of rock samples development of weathering and alteration phenomenon were defined and 16 rock samples out of 220 that represent the field in general were chosen to be chemically analized and after that geochemical comments on the Tuzla geothermal field were made. Also hydrothermal alteration zones that are located in Tuzla Tepe, on which weathering and alteration phenomenon is observed as widespread and thermal water discharge locations in the near perimeter of Tuzla Tepe were mapped and from these data rock change in Tuzla geothermal field were modeled.

13.1 INTRODUCTION Cyanide is, a generic term indicating the presence of the cyanide ion (CN-). Cyanide is a very common, naturally occurring compound produced by many biochemical reactions. Many plant species synthesize organic compounds which contain cyanide in the form of cyanogenic glycosides (Knowles, 1976). For example, trace amounts of cyanide are present in the seeds and leaves of many members of the Rosaceae (rose) family (Kingsbury, 1964). Many common items such as lettuce, maize, sweet potatoes, kidney beans, (Oke, 1969) almonds, and cigarette smoke contain cyanide. As examples, a recent chemical analysis of chocolate-covered almonds measured a total cyanide content of about two ppm (Steffen Robertson and Kirsten, 1987); and the U.S. Surgeon General (U.S. Department of Health, 1964) has shown that cigarette smoke contains up to 1,600 ppm total cyanide. The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complicated because the cyanide ion forms compounds and complexes with many elements. Some cyanide species are highly toxic whereas others are relatively inert and harmless. Molecular hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is the most toxic form of cyanide. Under most conditions, HCN exists as a gas which readily dissipates or reacts with the environment to form less toxic or nontoxic forms of cyanide. Thus HCN is an ephemeral toxin, and many naturally occurring geochemical processes reduce the HCN concentration of a heap system with time. As discussed below, free cyanide includes the two species, ionic cyanide (CN-) and molecular hydrogen cyanide. Free-cyanide toxicity in man, mammal s, and aquatic species is we1 1 documented (Doudoroff, 1976; Ecological Analysts, 1979; Towill et al., 1978). The lethal doses reported for human adults vary with the type of exposure as follows: • One to three mg/kg body weight if ingested; • One hundred to 300 ppm if inhaled; and • One hundred mg/kg of body weight if absorbed. Acute toxicity of free cyanide to freshwater invertebrates ranges from 0.028 to 2.295 mg/l, depending on species and test conditions. Generally, free-cyanide concentrations greater than 0.1 mg/l are expected to kill sensitive species in freshwater or marine environments (Doudoroff, 1976;

7.1 INTRODUCTION The circulating fluid (generally an aqueous cyanide solution) is the major active component of heap leaching. This solution extracts precious metal from the heap and is then processed to recover the precious metal. The solution continuously recycles through the heap to recover more precious metal. With each cycle through the heap, water and chemicals are lost. Make-up water and chemicals must be added to balance losses from evaporation, seepage, entrainment, and chemical reaction in the heap, as well as any other processing losses. Adding more water than needed can result in a build-up of water as inventory in the various ponds and can eventually require that water be discharged from the operation. This is an extremely undesirable condition, and can often be very expensive in both investment in water treating facilities and operating costs. Most heap leach facilities operate under a zero discharge permit; thus, a situation requiring water discharge can result in permit violation. Chemical solution control must be managed to maintain the optimum pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cyanide content, while preventing "scaling". Calcium-based precipitation is a common scaling problem in mill reclaim waters. A buildup of these deposits can result in severe reduction of water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in metal production. In addition, problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon (in carbon recovery systems) can be and often are experienced when scale control is not maintained. The remainder of this chapter discusses chemical solution control and scaling prediction/prevention in the context of a "closed" system. Sizing of ponds to accommodate precipitation and runoff, collection systems, and other similar design considerations are not discussed here. These topics are deferred to later chapters, e.g. Chapter 10 considers design of collection systems while Chapter 12 discusses pond sizing. 7.2 CHEMICAL CONTROL Chemical composition of the circulating solution must be controlled by the operator if the heap leaching process is to be successful. Namibia is known as water stressed country with a limited amount of fresh water. Therefore, the use of water is an important topic in the country’s development agenda. Water is a shared and finite resource, with high social, cultural, environmental and economic value. However, freshwater resources are under pressure from ore processing, industrialization, urbanization and the demands of a growing population. In Namibia, ore processing, coupled with the anticipated increase in water demand for human consumption and other uses, has created significant stress on the limited water resources of the country. This is critical in the mining industry as water remains typically the prime environmental medium (besides air) that is affected by mining activities. This study sought to investigate the strides made in water management in mining, especially in environmentally sensitive areas of Namibia. Most mining companies operate next or alongside farms, national parks and fishing areas. The overall objective of this research was to highlight the current practices in Namibia’s mineral industry operating in environmentally sensitive areas especially in areas where uranium is being mined and processed. The methodology consisted of comprehensive literature review, field visits to the case study areas, and comparative studies with best practices. This study shows that over a ten-year period, freshwater consumption was reduced by over 55% per tonne of milled ore in uranium mines, resulting in substantive financial savings as well as the delay in water augmentation through desalination. The strategies employed by the Namibian companies involve inclusive stakeholders’ engagement, recycling and reuse, and the minimization of water losses. The realization that the water challenge cannot be solved by any one party acting alone has been fundamental in ensuring environmental compliance within the mining industry in Namibia. Namibia’s industrial leaders have increasingly recognized that reducing the water footprint of mining activities must be one of the key performance indicators for management. The major finding of this study was that Namibia with its unique ecosystems, mineral reserves, and emerging industries can harness a wide range of resources both to improve the welfare of its citizens and to protect the integrity of its environment.
