The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

The practice of roof bolting in world-wide mining activities is very well known, having been used extensively for over 50 years. The theory of roof bolting, however, is extremely complicated, and only recently have investigators attempted to explain the theory. Discussions of the mechanics involved usually originate with actual experience gained in the use of roof bolts. The use of roof bolting in mines has grown dramatically during the period after World War II. Other scientific techniques have emerged in mining research in the same period. Included in these techniques is the study of rock mechanics, which has now developed into an impressive research effort. Various means of analysis have been utilized in rock mechanics, most of which reduce rock to an isotropic, homogeneous medium that could be easily analyzed. Because of the inherent nature of rock, direct research methods frequently are not certain to provide satisfactory results, whereas indirect methods must idealize a given set of conditions in order to be useful. One of the indirect research methods is the photoelastic technique, the theory of which is widely known and needs no elaboration. This technique has been used extensively to examine the state of stress around underground openings of various shapes in certain types of strata, and under various configurations (1,2,3,4,5). Much of the theory used now in the design of underground openings is based on photoelastic evaluation. Unless rigorously applied, how- ever, the photoelastic technique is at best a qualitative means of evaluation. It is useful, however, for unusual examples which can be more or less easily analyzed to obtain the overall state of stress which could not be determined by other means. Little work has been done in the photoelastic analysis of rock bolting, mainly because direct research techniques have proven useful.

The asbestiform habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals also may crystallize with this unusual habit. The habit may be characterized by (1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 pm), which have grown with a common fiber axis direction, but are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions; (2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction; (3) unusual tensile strength; (4) high aspect ratio; and (51 flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties. ASBESTOS AND THE ASBESTIFORM HABIT Asbestos is defined as a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation, and therefore are suitable for uses where in- combustible, nonconducting, or chemically resistant material is required (Gary, et al., 1974). The most common minerals that may occur with the asbestiform habit are chrysotile, grunerite (amosite], riebeckite (crocidolite), actinolite, anthophyllite, and tremolite; although the development of this habit among these minerals is rare. Other minerals, most notably other amphiboles, can occur in this habit, but no others have been mined commercially as asbestos. All asbestos is confined to metamorphic rocks, even though other habits of the amphiboles are common in igneous rocks. Slip fiber veins are the most common deposits (South African amosite, Canadian chrysotile, etc.), but mass fiber deposits also may occur such as California chrysotile or mountain leather. Field relations and experimental data support the hypothesis that metasomatism is the dominant process in the formation of asbestos fibers, amphibole as well as serpentine. The crystal habit of a mineral is the shape or form a crystal or aggregate of crystals take on during crystallization. The asbestiform habit has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from other habits. Chief among these is the fibril structure.Afibri1 is a single or twinned crystal with a very small width, generally less than 0.5 pm, and an extremely high aspect ratio; bundles of fibrils may have lengths reaching into the cm. Fibrils share a common crystal growth direction along the long axis of the fiber, but appear to be disoriented with respect to one another in the other crystallographic directions. The structure of the individual fibrils, and the organization of fibrils within a fiber may differ among the various types of asbestos. The fibril structure of asbestos is probably a factor in controlling a number of secondary properties that include high tensile strength, flexibility sufficient for weaving, and anomalous optical properties. The high tensile strength of asbestos is quite remarkable, exceeding that of the ordinary varieties by a thousand fold (Zoltai, 1978). In part, this may be attributed to the lack of defect on the fibril surfaces (Zoltai, 19781, but some contribution also must come from the existance of bundles and the nature of the ordering of and forces among the fibrils. The flexibility is not only enhanced by the fact that the fibrils may slip past one another, but by their small widths and extreme aspect ratios. However, structural defects parallel to the fiber axis also may contribute to this property. Among the common commercial asbestos types, the greatest flexibility is found in chrysotile and the least in grunerite asbestos (amosite), varying inversely with fibril thick- ness. In addition, at least for chrysotile, composition also may affect the flexibility of the fibers. Finally, most asbestos minerals are mono- clinic, but optically display parallel extinction (Heinrich, 1965, and Wylie, 1978). Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. "Tailings dam is a subsidiary facility of mining production. In order to decrease tailings dam accidents caused by the failure of flood drainage system, this paper proposed a framework of potential failure detection system of tailings dam flood drainage facility based on three dimensional panorama technology. A collection device of three dimensional panorama is designed to capture the onsite images of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The spatial information of flood drainage facility of tailings dam is recovered through projecting the image information to spherical surface by using three dimensional panorama technology. Two dimensional images are transformed into three dimensional images in three stages of panorama images process, which are pretreatment, registration and splicing. Combined with the framework of HTML5, panorama images are embedded into webpage. These web pages have the functions of user interface that the images could be displayed, moved and zoomed. With the function of interaction with panoramic display, 3D panorama scenes can be changed and scaled. Browsing the webpage is helpful to find potential risks such as possible holes, fractures and leakages of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The realization of this system can detect the potential safety risks of flood drainage system of tailings dam. The application of this system would improve the safety and provide the ability of accident pre-warning. It is useful to maintain the healthy and sustainable operation of tailings dam.Introduction It is reported by Xie et al (2009) that tailings dam are necessary facilities for mine production and places which constructed by damming troughs or encirclement used to store tailings that eliminated after ore selection in Metal and non-metallic mines. It is reported by Mei (2012) that tailings dam is a dangerous source of high-energy man-made debris flow, the collapse of the tailings dam takes devastating damage, which seriously threatens the safety of life and property of the enterprises and the downstream residents. It is reported by Dong (2011) that the collapse of the tailings dam causes secondary disasters such as environmental pollution at the same time. It’s a serious impact on regional economic development and social stability. The phenomenon of collapse of destruction is general excessively of tailings dams in China. It is reported by Zhang et al (2011) that most of these phenomena are caused by flood over the top of dams. The main reason is the lack of capacity or the failure of the drainage system. There are also accidents caused by the failure of drainage system in foreign countries in recent years. For example, November 5th 2015, the tailing dams collapsed because of the insufficient drainage capacity of the Germano mining area in Germano Mariana area in central Minas Gerais state in Brazil. After a small post-earthquake, the liquefied tailings fill sand submerge downstream cities and towns. It finally destroyed 158 houses, killed at least 17 people, polluted 663km river and destroyed 15 square kilometres of land along the river. It is reported by Rico et al (2008) that it’s necessary to continuous monitor and control the tailings drainage system in order to reduce the occurrence of tailings accidents and guarantee the sustainable production of the mine. The traditional artificial detection methods of flood drainage system of tailings dam exist many problems such as heavy workload, low efficiency, and susceptible to meteorological conditions. And it is reported by Luo (2013) that the tailings dam wastewater is corrosive which result a certain disease in flood discharge facilities such as tailings drainage culvert, etc. In order to realize the effective monitoring, management and maintenance of flood drainage system of tailings dam, advanced technologies need to be used to acquire the information of collection and management of flood drainage facilities of tailings dam."

High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

INTRODUCTION Towards the end of the 1890s the attention of a prospector by the name of Thomas Cullinan was drawn to the occurrence of alluvial diamonds east of Pretoria. Persistent prospecting work by Cullinan led to the loca¬tion of the source of these diamonds-a kimberlite pipe on the Elandsfontein farm. Cullinan eventually acquired the property in 1902, and during an extensive evaluation program outlined the largest diamondiferous pipe in South Africa on which the Premier mine was established. Worldwide attention was drawn to this mine in 1905 when the Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3106 carats and is by far the largest gem diamond ever discovered, was recovered. Premier mine operated with varying success until 1932 when the worldwide depression forced it to close. In 1945 the mine was reopened and since then has been a major producer of gem and industrial diamonds. During the early 1950s exploratory drilling revealed that below the 370-m level the pipe had been completely cut off by a younger gabbro sill. This sill has created major mining and metallurgical problems but the existence of vast reserves of high grade ore below it justi¬fied the establishment of virtually a new mine below the sill. Detailed planning of below-the-sill mining is nearing completion and the development of the first mining block (the L1 block) is well advanced. A full discus¬sion of this block follows. GEOLOGY OF PREMIER MINE Pipe Morphology and Country-Rock Geology As can be seen in Fig. 1, Premier mine is an elon¬gated oval shape with a long axis of 900 m on the surface and a short axis of 450 m. The pipe has a surface area of 32 hectares which decreases progres¬sively with increasing depth, so that 500 m below the surface the area is reduced to 22 hectares. The contact between the kimberlite and the surrounding country rock is sharp, with an average angle of dip of 1.48 rad (85°). From the surface down to approximately 350 m, the country rock is a felsite which grades downwards into a norite. In general both rock types are hard and massive, the felsite in particular being poorly jointed. This characteristic combined with other factors results in an extremely stable open pit, and near-vertical side¬walls are currently being maintained. The norite in general is competent but is heavily jointed in some areas resulting in very blocky ground which creates localized tunnel support problems. In the southeastern area below the sill a zone of highly altered and very unstable norite, which has also created localized sup¬port and development difficulties, lies adjacent to the pipe contact. Kimberlite Geology The Premier pipe is a complex multiple intrusion which contains in the region of 15 separate types of kimberlite, most of which are volumetrically insignifi¬cant. On a simplified basis three major types can be identified which correspond to three separate phases of intrusion. They are: Brown Kimberlite: This represents the first phase of intrusion and now occupies the eastern part of the pipe. In plan the brown kimberlite has a crescentric shape resulting from the intrusive relationship with the younger gray kimberlite which lies to the west. The brown kimberlite increases in relative area with increas¬ing depth which is a favorable factor for future mining operations since this kimberlite is the richest area of the mine, having an average grade of 70 carats/ 100 t. Below the sill this rock disintegrates extremely rapidly when exposed to air or water, to form a fine gravel-like material. This characteristic is due to a high montmorilonite clay content. As is common with clay minerals of this type, water can be absorbed into the crystal lattice with a resultant increase in volume which causes the physical decomposition of the rock. The presence of this decomposing kimberlite was a major factor governing the choice of a mining method, as well as development and tunnel support techniques. Gray Kimberlite: This is the most abundant type and represents the second major phase of intrusion. The diamond content is variable depending on the amount of waste rock dilution, and in general the rock is stable and non-decomposing. At the time of formation of Premier, the surface rock type was Waterberg quartzite, a rock formation which has subsequently been removed from this area by erosion. The explosive extrusion of the gray kimberlite caused extensive brecciation of this rock and while the kimberlite was in a mobile state huge masses of quartz¬ite, amounting to tens of millions of tons, slumped into the pipe. This quartzite became concentrated in the central area of the mine and has been a major mining problem throughout the history of Premier since, due to the irregular distribution of the quartzite, effective selective mining has never been possible. The quartzite is therefore extracted with the ore and has a significant dilution effect on the overall grade. Black Kimberlite: In the western part of the pipe a circular, pluglike body of kimberlite is intruded into the gray kimberlite. This plug consists mainly of a hard, dark-colored rock known as black kimberlite, but also contains a number of minor kimberlite variet.ies as well as nonkimberlite carbonate dikes. The Gabbro Sill The sill averages 75 m in thickness and within the confines of the pipe consists of 52 million t of rock. On average the major dip is 0.34 rad (20°) to the northeast which is across the short axis of the pipe, the range of dip being from near horizontal up to 0.52 rad (30°). Due to the pronounced dip, the sill is encount¬ered over a vertical distance of 175 m with the highest upper contacts on the 355-m horizon and the lowest bottom contact on the 530-m horizon.

First Majestic Silver Corp’s La Encantada Silver Mine is a producing mine with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day. The La Encantada team is currently constructing two small-scale caving mines, including the San Javier breccia caving mine. The new mine is constructed within a mineralized breccia body composed of clasts of varying sizes and with very poor rock quality. Due to this poor rock quality, primary and secondary supports are required to support both the development and production stages. Since the proximity of the new mining levels to existing old workings, correct selection of the support system and proper production controls, instrumentation, and monitoring are very critical to maintain the stability of the pillars and fortification elements. An increased ground deformation due to the load transfer during the production stage is expected. This report reviews the primary and secondary support elements used in the different stages of mining, the monitoring of ground deformation, and the steps taken to analyze and visualize the collected data in order to enable the geotechnical team to manage caving stress and maintain pillar stability. (“First Majestic”) is a Canadian mining company focused on silver production in Mexico that operates six producing silver mines, including La Encantada Silver Mine (“La Encantada”). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. La Encantada is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, in the municipality of Villa de Ocampo. The mine lies in the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental physiographic province. The mine location is shown in Figure 1. La Encantada is a producing mine, with a mill processing capacity of 3,000 tpd, and a 4,000 tpd capacity cyanidation leaching circuit equipped to process fresh underground ore and old tailings amenable to be reprocessed. The mine is currently employing several mining methods, including overhand cut and fill for narrow veins, small mantos, and other minor deposits. A subset of caving methods are applied on the larger, but weak, mineral deposits, such as at the San Javier breccia and La Prieta breccia. La Encantada consists of vein, manto, breccia pipe, and chimney deposits with concentrations of silver, lead, iron, and zinc in oxidized mineralization enclosed by calcareous sedimentary formations of Cretaceous age. At deeper levels, there is sulphide mineralization in skarn with zinc and silver concentrations associated with a granodiorite intrusion.

"Everyone has a general idea what mixing means, but describing the mixing process is not so simple. The objective of any mixing process is to distribute and blend the materials with different characteristics, different quantities as evenly as possible resulting in a homogenous mixture. Introducing proportional movement with the optimal intensity into the materials achieves effective homogeneous mixing results. A simple one directional movement with inadequate acceleration of the materials would obviously not achieve the same mixing results. This would be more like stirring than mixing. The amount of relative movement that is introduced is a decisive factor. Circumstances for successful mixing involve distribution of all materials, and achieving the highest probability that all recipe particles located in a specific position at the beginning can be found at any random location in the mixing chamber at the end of the process. This is the only way to ensure that a consistent result is achieved every time mixing is repeated.THREE-PART CYCLE The mixing cycle occurs in three phases; charging the mixer, the mixing process, and discharging. The sequence in which the individual materials to be mixed are filled into the mixer can have a huge impact on the efficiency of the mixing cycle. The mixing cycle overlaps the charging process and the discharge cycle follows the mixing cycle. To achieve optimum results, effective discharging methods should be taken into consideration to avoid risks of segregation. Costs for energy and wear should be as low as possible and finally, it is very important that the mixing cycle takes place as quickly as possible. In concrete or paste backfill production, selecting the best mixing technology is crucial for both the quality of the final product to be blended and the efficiency of the production process. The optimum mixing system is one that rapidly disperses all ingredients evenly throughout the mixing trough and completely surrounds all the course or fine aggregate particles with the slurry cement particles. Specific for paste production it’s the mixers job to also break-down unconditioned tailings to achieve consistent paste viscosity or measured spread. Many paste and concrete formulas also involve small quantities of chemical additives which also must be evenly distributed effectively. The time required per mixing cycle as well as the costs of energy, wear and maintenance will determine the economy of the concrete production."

Determination of the best time to replace an aging unit of equipment is a recurring problem which is common to essentially all surface and underground mining operations. Virtually all mining equipment is subject to wear and the resulting deterioration that increases with equipment life. This mechanical deterioration results in lower availability and, thus, decreasing, production. Due to decreasing production and increasing repair costs, there is an optimum age at which the replacement of a given equipment unit with a new unit will result in the lowest cost per unit of production for the equipment operation in question (Figure 1). Determination of this optimum replacement age is further complicated by factors such as: possible overhaul alternatives, fleet replacement and expansion alternatives, remaining life of the mine, and technological improvements in the potential replacement or differences in the production capacities of these replacements. Determination of the optimum time to replace an equipment unit becomes more critical each successive year due to the rising capital costs of new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. An incorrect choice of the replacement age for an equipment unit can result in excessive costs to the mining operation. If a unit is replaced too early, the capital cost of the unit is not fully utilized; conversely, replacing a unit too late results in excessive maintenance costs and low production. The economic life of a piece of equipment is the equipment age that results in the lowest total discounted cost per unit of production for that piece of equipment, not considering the cost of future replacements. The economic life of a piece of equipment is usually shorter than the physical life, the maximum age at which a machine is capable of doing useful work. The optimum replacement age for a piece of mining equipment may vary from the economic life of that equipment due to the remaining life of the mine, fleet considerations, costs associated with potential replacement machines, and capital rationing constraints. For example, the equipment life of the current machine that may result in the lowest cost per unit of production might be 10 years; however, when the timing of the future replacement costs are entered into the calculation, a different life for the current machine might result in the lowest total cost per unit produced for the remaining life of the mine.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

Cyanide is a significant contributor to the cost of producing gold. Any reduction in consumption that can be achieved through more reliable measurement and/or more efficient management of dosing rates can have a significant financial impact. An automated analyser, by its mechanical nature, is not prone to the variations of human operators, particularly notice­able from shift to shift. Reducing the standard deviation of the measurement (ie, reducing noise ), the automated measurement will give the metallurgist a truer picture of the underlying patterns of usage. The combination of automated analysis with on-line operation and a control loop provides timely information that is efficiently utilised in the management of the plant. Until the release of the Chemtronics On-Line Cyanide Analyser (OTA3000) about 12 months ago, the Australian experience with automated analysers (especially on-line) had been substantially negative. Since its release, the Chemtronics instrument has outperformed both manual titrations and other automated instruments, gaining an enviable reputation for accuracy and reliability in the process. The instrument is built around the technique ofpotentiomet­ric titrations, in which the potential of an indicator electrode is measured as a function of the volume oftitrant that is added to the sample. As the cyanide in the sample is depleted, the potential on the indicator electrode changes rapidly, producing a typical sigmoidal curve. The OTA3000 takes the first differ­ential of the curve, identifies the apex of the peak as the endpoint and reports the result in parts per million of sodium cyanide. The OTA3000 accepts the peak as valid only if it exceeds a certain minimum height. That minimum height is a programma­ble parameter and is used to optimise the relationship between sensitivity and the rejection of spurious peaks. The instrument will track cyanide trends through both positive and negative slopes of any magnitude, but it will provide a warning if it the slope becomes excessive, not because it affects the instrument but because it means that something unusual is occurring in the tanks. There are a limited number of conditions under which the instrument will produce a result of zero. In these cases the OTA3000 holds any output lines at the last valid result while it repeats the titration. This feature was incorporated for reasons of stability in a feedback loop.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. Truck fleet dispatching plays a crucial role in reducing operational costs and fulfilling operational targets in open-pit mining operations and is subject to large uncertainty arising from the operating cycles of trucks and loading equipment. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based truck dispatching system. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning area that deals with learning an optimal sequential decision-making strategy in an uncertain environment. An open-pit load-and-haul simulation is developed that also captures the truck movements and interactions in the shared road network, and a Neural Network is successfully trained to suggest truck dispatching decisions in a real-time manner.

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.
