Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program which was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied using small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of the delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of the delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth and amount of detonating cord and cover.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. Potential users must evaluate the combustion properties of these fuels to determine equipment and operating changes required for their use. Most work to date has been done with boiler applications. However, many potential non-boiler applications exist in the metals and minerals industry. These applications require specific evaluations appropriate for the processes involved.

Two pilot scale bioreactors designed to treat acid mine drainage primarily using sulfate reducing bacteria were constructed underground at the Eagle Mine Superfund site in Minturn Colorado. The project was designed to test th applicability of microbiological treatment on water with high metals concentration and to test the process in an underground environment. Objectives were, 1) to compare metal removal, pH increase, and sulfate reduction in a single stage reactor with a double stage reactor of equal volume at varying flow rates; 2) to determine where within the substrate treatment occurs· and 3) to examine volume versus surface ara as a design parameter for optimizing metal removal processes. Results from the reactors showed that the single stage reactor and double stage reactor performed equally well for the removal of Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Zn. pH increased above 6.5 in both reactors. Greater than 97% of metals were removed within the first ten inches of substrate. Volume proved to be a more useful parameter for determining removal rates than area. Using volume as a design parameter rather than surface area enables PMDT systems to be constructed as packed columns rather than broad wetlands, Thus, space requirements are significantly reduced.

Laboratory column studies were conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of slag and red mud reactive barriers for cleaning up leachates generated at mining and waste disposal sites and loaded with copper and manganese. Solutions containing the metals of concern were prepared by dissolving the required quantities of CuSO4?5H2O and MnSO4?H2O in distilled water so that Cu concentration was 100 ppm and Mn 20 ppm. Flow rates of 25 mL.h-1 for Cu solution and 75 mL.h-1 for Mn solution were used in order to simulate aquifer water velocities of 1 ft/d and 3 ft/d respectively. Solutions were pumped upflow, in Plexiglas laboratory columns filled with each reactive medium, using peristaltic pumps. Measurements of middle and outflow column pH, redox potential, conductivity and elements concentration were performed to provide information regarding removal mechanisms for both elements and exhaustion/inactivation rates for each reactive medium. Both reactive media showed fairly good removal efficiency over the period studied. Copper was mainly removed by precipitation and formation of Cu(OH)2 while removal of manganese was due to precipitation of Mn(OH2).

This paper describes many of the Web-Powered Manufacturing initiatives being employed across various industries, and relates them to similar opportunities being started within the mining and mineral-processing sector. The following opportunities are enabled by Web-Powered Manufacturing: • Collaboration with outside experts to extend their pool of resources • Management of remote and distributed operations • Tie-in of small operations to a larger operation • Monitoring a position in a JV operated by a partner • Managing a plant located in someone else's facility • Having a chemical supplier manage his inventory in a customer's tanks • Having an equipment supplier remotely troubleshoot his equipment installed in a customer's site • Having an additive supplier provide remote pro-active. guidance in optimization of a customer's operation • Having software suppliers take responsibility for the results of their applications • Outsourcing software and systems support by providing remote access Details of one of these opportunities are described in this article, and the benefits captured using this approach and the technologies necessary to make them a reality are emphasized.

Federal mine safety regulations prohibit the recirculation of face air In a gassy Class III metal-non metal mine. Tg Soda Ash, Inc, operates a 2.0M ton/yr (2.2 million st/yr) underground gassy Class III trona mine In southwest Wyoming, currently liberating approximately 5,700 m3/day (200,000 ft3/day) of methane. Because of the low methane emissions and the incombustibllity of trona, it was decided that Tg would be an excellent environment to test recirculation at a U. S. gassy mine, for possible future use by Industry. A research program was begun with the cooperation of MSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Utah, and Tg. Initial testing centered around re-using shop air under¬ground. Next, conduct a continuous miner section recirculation test to see how the face contamination was affected by 305m (1,000 ft) and 610m (2,000 ft) recirculation distances. A district test followed to examine the effects of the critical parameter - respirable dust. Finally, a long-term program to study respirable trona dust transportation and deposition in mine airways to plan for district fan siting and effects on face air dust levels.

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

A methodology was developed wherein. the increase in compressive strength, mineralogical changes and pore water composition were all studied simultaneously as a function, of moisturized spent shale curing time. From these results the relationship between the nature of cementation process and the composition of pore water was established. Heavy metals were entrapped in the cementing constituents and the pore water became mainly a solution of alkaline sulfates. While the specific data are applicable only to the material studied, the methodology and general conclusions are useful for evaluating the environmental factors in spent shale disposal and expected leachates composition.

The US Bureau of Mines conducted a multifaceted geomechanics research project at a bump-prone longwall coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This mine presented a unique opportunity to study coal mine bumps because the problem appeared to be confined to areas beneath a sandstone channel of limited areal extent. The Bureau's research plan sought to exploit the uniqueness of the site by monitoring strata behavior and longwall support reactions as the longwall face approached and passed beneath a sandstone channel. The study incorporated static pillar stress and strata deformation measurements, shield support leg pressure measurements and microseismic monitoring, as well as geologic mapping and the collection of observational data. Data collection was underway when a major coal bump occurred on the longwall face at the mine. Pillar behavior (load and deformation), shield loading and microseismic activity were monitored prior to, during and after the bump. Observations in the tailgate indicated that these pillars were failing prior to and following the face bump. Shield load data, evaluated in an effort to identify trends that could be used to forecast coal bumps, appear to provide a measure of the effectiveness of destressing operations conducted on the face (e.g. shot firing). Analyses of microseismic data revealed anomalous values associated with microseismic "energy" prior to the face bump. In addition, microseismic source-location data and underground observations provided some insight as to the sequence of pillar and face bumps.

INTRODUCTION In May 1984, The Canadian Pacific Railway awarded to the Joint Venture of Foundation of Canada, Ltd. of Toronto, Atlas Construction Co. of Montreal, and S. A. Healy Co. of Chicago the contract for the construction of 27,000 ft of tunnel starting from the east portal. Selkirk contractors, the Joint Venture of Foundation, Atlas and Healy, which had successfully completed for CPR in 1983 the construction of both portal structures for this tunnel, studied several different alternative proposals before presenting its bid pooling each individual company's technical resources and experiences. (Foundation had just completed in association with other companies a similar tunnel project in British Columbia, and the S. A. Healy Co. could provide its experience of more than 40 miles of tunnels excavated by full face boring machines.) Among the alternatives investigated there was a fully circular tunnel to be excavated by a 30 ft diameter TBM, a full section drill and shoot proposal, and a mixed alternative, the "key hole" proposal, consisting of a TBM driven circular top heading followed by benching to design size. Technical, geological and economical considerations determined the alternative that was eventually proposed to CPR. HISTORICAL NOTES The tunnel construction parallels an existing tunnel through the Selkirk mountains that was excavated in 1885. In order to reduce the grade to 1% on the heavily loaded west bound trains, the new tunnel was at a lower elevation and lengthened to almost 9 miles. GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION CP Rail site investigations began in 1978. The surface rocks in the tunnel construction area are metamorphosed Cambrian and Pre-Cambrian sediments; the underlying formation contains fine and coarse grained rocks presenting different degrees of metamorphism. Chemical and radioisotope stratification studies were carried out in an abandoned uranium tailings pile at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings, with an average thickness of 7 m over an area of 16 hectares, were deposited approximately 20 years ago on a layer of black peaty material which overlays deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sands. Geohydro-chemical investigations of this tailings area have been ongoing since 1978. The radioisotope profile study was conducted on three adjacent sites. Solid core samples, collected with a split spoon sampler at various depths, were analyzed for various chemical and radioisotope constituents. The results indicated by 2 distinct zones of stratification; an upper zone, where the constituents were uniformly distributed, and a lower zone, near the peat-tailing interface, which showed increasing concentration with depth. Within the peat layer, the concentration decreased rapidly with no significant levels of contaminant penetration below the peat layers observed, though the samples were limited. The pH profile showed that the top 5 m of the tailings have been oxidized, the average soil pH in this zone was 3.4 compared to 5 .8 underneath it. The groundwater hydrology of the system was observed to be complex showing downward and lateral flow in the dry season and lateral and upward flow during the spring and periods of heavy rainfall. The results are discussed in terms of a model based on the combined segregation and settling process of the tailings fine fraction, and the geohydro-chemical interaction of the solid and liquid phases.

Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

Tunnels in the granitic Climax stock at the Nevada Test Site were inspected for keyblock occurrence. Thirteen relatively large pyramidal keyblocks were located in about 230 m (750 it) of tunnel. Orientations, dimensions, joint roughness coefficients, and joint compressive strengths were measured for the faces of nine keyblocks. The measurements were used to back-analyze keyblock stability to check the validity of a numerical model for keyblock behavior. A newly developed three-dimensional numerical model correctly predicted whether or not each keyblock failed in six of eight cases. The two exceptions involved stress conditions and keyblock locations that clearly violated the assumptions that underlie the stability model. The observations also allowed the effect of tunnel orientation on keyblock occurrence to be evaluated. Of the thirteen observed keyblocks, nine large blocks were found in less than 30 m (100 ft) of the Piledriver drift (which runs N56E) while only four blocks of comparable size were observed in 200 m (656 ft) of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax drifts (N61W). The orientations of the keyblock faces were checked against known discontinuity set orientations; some of the faces correlated well with mean set orientations, whi.le other faces were fringe members of sets. Stereographic techniques were used to examine the frequency of keyblock occurrence and to determine the maximum keyblock size that could be encountered with a given combination of discontinuities. Keyblock occurrence was found to be affected by tunnel orientation in a predictable way; this can be used to guide or improve tunnel design practices.

By an order of the Executive Council of the Provincial Government dated January 18, 1979, a Royal Commission was established under the Public Inquiries Act to: 1) Examine the adequacy of existing Federal and Provincial requirements for the protection of the health and safety of workers associated with exploration, mining and milling of uranium in B.C. and for the protection of the environment and of the public. 2) Receive public input on these matters. 3) Make recommendations for setting and maintaining standards for worker and public safety and for the protection of the environment as a result of the exploration for the mining and milling of uranium ores. At that time,and at the present time in British Columbia, no uranium mines were, or are, in operation. Exploration at a number of sites was under way and one deposit, the Blizzard deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.92 million tonnes containing approximately 4.74 million kilograms of U308 was at an advanced stage of exploration. With our Terms of Reference, and because of the diverse geology of the western Cordillera which could potentially host a broad variety of uranium, deposit types, the Commission was faced with the task of considering environmental and health protection necessary for the potential development of [any] kind of uranium mineralogy situated in [any] of the environments found in British Columbia. Over the past 17 months since that time, much has transpired, culminating in the February 27, 1980 Provincial Government announcement of a seven year moratorium on exploration, mining and processing of uranium coupled with the termination of our Inquiry before completion of the hearings. The Government sebsequently modified its decision to terminate the Commission completely, deciding instead to stop the hearing but allow time for the Commission to gather in the work that had been initiated

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the influence of atmospheric pressure changes on methane gas migration through mine seals at a mine site located in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The mine gained access to a coal reserve through part of an abandoned mine and constructed nine seals to isolate the extensive old workings from the active mine area. Underground problems were experienced when atmospheric pressure fell, causing methane gas to migrate around the seals and into the active workings. During mining operations, methane gas levels exceeded legal limits and coal production was halted until the ventilation system could be improved. When mining resumed with increased air flow, methane gas concentrations occasionally exceeded the legal limits and production had to be halted until the methane level fell within the mandated limit. To assist the ventilation system, a pressure relief borehole located in the abandoned workings near the mine seals was proposed. Preliminary estimates by a gob gas simulator (computer model) suggested that a 0.76 m (2.5 ft) diameter pressure relief borehole with an exhaust fan would be necessary to remove enough methane from the abandoned area so that the ventilation system could dilute the gas in the active workings. However, by monitoring methane gas emissions and seal pressure, during periods of low atmospheric pressure, the amount of methane gas that migrated into the active mine workings was calculated. Researchers then determined that a relief borehole, 20.3 cm (8-in) with an exhaust fan could remove at least twice the maximum measured volume of migrating methane gas. Because gas concentrations in the abandoned workings could potentially reach explosive limits, it was proposed that the mine eliminate the exhaust fan. Installation of the recommended borehole and enlarging two other ventilation boreholes located in the abandoned area reduced methane gas leakage through the seals by at least 63%.

"In his 1989 book, The New Realities, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized” (p. 209).The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze and interpret data that are material to a mineral-valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral-valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (minerals valuation, mineral-property valuation).The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the value of a mineral property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated value (the act of valuing)” (p. 14).Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The template deals with valuation, which is distinct from evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that valuation addresses the estimation of value of a mineral property, whereas evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a mineral property for an investment decision (p. 2).”This is an important difference because the minerals industry commonly makes investment decisions using feasibility studies to evaluate a proposed mineral development and production project. The purpose of such investment-decision analysis is distinctly different from valuation of a mineral property, no matter where that property lies upon the mineral explorationdevelopment- production-reclamation timeline (Fig. 1). Valuation involves terms such as market value, just compensation, fair value, etc., whereas investment-decision analysis is concerned with the economic viability of a given proposed project. Although feasibility analysis and market valuation can both use discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a tool, the formulation of the DCFs and their interpretation are different."

Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for health and safety of miners. Mine operations cease if the concentration of NOx or CO exceeds the threshold limit value (TLV) of the pollutants. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Studies of the turbulence parameters suggest that effective ventilation of the pit and removal of pollutants can be accomplished if a large enough mixing length in the open pit can be created. Turbulent mixing by eddies of different length scales under an inversion layer is product of wind shear, thermal gradient and buoyancy. The main result of turbulence is mixing of the atmospheric profile and transport of momentum. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Simulation results of a novel mitigation approach using cloud cover will be presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION In extreme climatic conditions, deep open-pit mines tend to trap pollutants at the pit bottom due to air inversions. Keeping open pits adequately ventilated is a considerable challenge for the mining community. Mine operators in cold regions are very familiar with this problem, the severity of which can be judged from Figures 1 and 2. The top portion of the figures show clear sky and snow covered benches. The brown haze, containing various contaminants accumulated over time in the pit under the air inversion, can be seen in the bottom portion of the figures. Several Arctic or subarctic mines have reported air inversions. Even Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon pit in Utah has reported local air inversions from time to time [1].Mitigation of pollutants in deep open-pit mines in the Arctic is a challenging task. For continued mining operation, the levels of pollutants must be below the TLVs. If no significant synoptic meteorological situation changes during an inversion, a warm air mass sits over the cold air mass within the open pit. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Some of the early approaches in artificially ventilating open pits were attempted in the USSR. Most of the studies by Soviet researchers suggested the use of turbojets and turbo-propeller engines, airscrews, axial pit fans, and meteotrons [2, 3]. However, the majority of these studies were only theoretical in nature, with no evidence of an approach that really worked in practice."
