In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized using waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empirical testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicate that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate than conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

Semimobile in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems can help reduce truck haulage in openpit mines by bringing the crusher closer to the excavation areas. Optimizing a production schedule with semimobile IPCC requires integrating extraction sequence, destination policy, crusher relocation, conveyor layout and truck fleet investment decisions. A mining complex with multiple mines and IPCC systems should be optimized simultaneously to find an optimal schedule for the entire value chain. An integrated stochastic optimization framework is proposed to produce long-term production schedules for mining complexes using multiple semimobile IPCC systems. The optimization model has flexibility to select the crusher locations and conveyor routes from anywhere inside the pits. The framework uses simulated orebody realizations to consider multielement grade uncertainty and manage associated risk. A hybrid metaheuristic solution approach based on simulated annealing and evolutionary algorithms is implemented. The method is demonstrated using an iron ore mining complex

This paper presents a computer program package for predicting surface movement and deformation caused by under-ground coal extractions. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

Longwall mining is considered the most efficient underground coal mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate, and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, wider panel and faster face movement have become the recent trends. Thus, longwall mining can create unexpected threats such as roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems causing sudden interruption of coal production and serious safety hazards. A recent study at the University of Alabama is dedicated to develop LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) which integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting, and warning modules. The main objectives of this system is to provide the stability and maintenance information, at every minute, such as high load, low setting pressure, leg leakage, etc., analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics and forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. Using this unique system, mine operating personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof loading patterns at the longwall face, and thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

The reduction roast-ammonium carbonate leach-hydrogen reduction process for laterites has been under development by Sherritt Gordon for the past 20 years. The process can treat high iron or low iron laterites, with some process modification, and gives extractions of 88-93% Ni or 82-88% Ni, respectively. Five campaigns on a 1 tonne per day Pilot Plant and four campaigns on a 35 t/d Demonstration Plant have been carried out on laterite from three different deposits, and many other laterites have been investigated in the laboratory. The Marinduque Surigao Nickel Refinery in the Philippines was designed on the basis of this work. The process comprises roasting to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt in the laterite, leaching the calcine in ammonium carbonate to dissolve the metals, recovery of cobalt by precipitation of a mixed metal sulphide, concentration of nickel from the carbonate solution by basic nickel carbonate precipitation and recovery of high purity nickel by hydrogen reduction of nickel from ammonium sulphate solution. Ion exchange has been developed as an alternative to BNC and for recovery of trace nickel from BNC barren liquor. Details of the development of some of the process steps through the laboratory to commercial plant are discussed. The process metallurgy has been confirmed in the commercial plant.

The main industrial minerals produced are non-metallic - clay, dolomite, limestone, pumice, salt, serpentine, and silica sand. The other minerals, some with minor production, include diatomite, feldspar, magnesite, sulphur, asbestos, and perlite. Energy and metallic minerals and aggregate are excluded from this account. These industrial minerals occur in a wide range of rock types and geological ages. For example clays are known from the weathering products of Cretaceous rhyolite and leaching of Eocene coal measures; from Quaternary weathering of contemporary loess and shallow marine sediments, and of greywacke of Triassic-Jurassic age; and from the hydrothermal alteration of Late Cenozoic acidic volcanic rocks.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

TBMs can last for decades and be rebuilt project after project with proper maintenance. How successful can rebuilt TBMs be? At the DigIndy Tunnel System in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, a rebuilt TBM was used to great effect. The 6.2 m diameter Main Beam, originally manufactured in 1980, bored 40+ km of tunnels and set three world records in its size class of 6 to 7 m, including a best month of 1,754 m. In this paper, the authors analyze the TBM rebuild, performance and lessons learned to make recommendations for future projects seeking to use rebuilt TBMs over long distances.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the '70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the '80s. Computers are used as an aid in the design and selection of the mill drive system; sophisticated computer graphics are used to create manufacturing drawings; and a new generation of gear cutting machines are used to manufacture the gears. These new gear cutters can generate-cut gears over 40' (12.2 m) in diameter at an AGMA quality level exceeding the currenty acceptable standards. The precision of the resulting gear assures maximum tooth contact, which will result in longer gear set life.

The goal of the DOE Coal Preparation Program is to provide industry with the scientific and engineering knowledge base to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean coal products for both existing and new markets. The DOE/PETC in-house program continues to conduct fundamental, exploratory, and applied research in the areas of physical, chemical, and microbial coal beneficiation to assist in meeting these goals and objectives. The Coal Preparation Division now has a new Coal Preparation Process Research Facility that allows continuous bench-scale testing of emerging coal cleaning technologies and ancillary coal preparation equipment at feed rates up to 1,250 kilograms (1.25 tons) per hour. Bench-scale and laboratory-scale research projects at PETC cover areas such as 1) the use of micronized-magnetite for fine-coal, 2) heavy-media cycloning, 3) fine coal reconstitution, 4) development and testing of coal preparation process flowsheet simulators, 5) dry coal beneficiation using electrostatic methods, 6) tracer methods to determine the efficiency of density-based separations, 7) selective oxidation of organic sulfur, and 8) microbial removal of pyrite and organic sulfur from coal. This paper will discuss several of these research areas.

Two pressure balancing chambers were constructed at a Colorado coal mine to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion. Each chamber was established by installing a Kennedy stopping at about 10 ft (3 m) in front of an isolation seal, and equipped with two safety doors, a nitrogen injection system, and a set of environmental monitors. Several pressure balancing tests for different ventilation conditions were conducted in these chambers. During each test, pressurized nitrogen was injected into the chamber and the pressure differentials across the stoppings and seals monitored. This study presents a summary of the results achieved, lessons learned, and the basic requirements to operate a pressure chamber effectively.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

The Westerschelde Tunnel is located in the south of the Netherlands and links the two parts of the Provinces of Zeeland, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland, which are separated by the Westerschelde. Road traf?c has up till now taken the detour via Belgium or crossed by ferry. This unsatisfactory transport link signifies major economic disadvantages above all for Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The first fixed link for road traffic between the communities of Terneuzen and Borsele are to be created by means of the two 6.6 km long tunnel tubes down to 65 m below sea level.

The objectives of this paper are: to review the current status of chloride leach processes for sulfide concentrates, to make an evaluation as to the applicability of chloride leaching for replacing pyrometallurgical processes and to comment on recent advances in construction materials. The paper does not delve in detail on process chemistry. Sufficient references are presented on each process to allow the interested researcher to obtain process chemistry details. GENERAL The fact that chloride oxidates can solubilize base metals from sulfide concentrates has been known since the 1880's. The work of Hoepfner in 1902 was particularly accurate for its time with regard to the chemistry of chloride solutions. Recent work has dealt with the understanding of chloride extraction thermodynamics by modelling the behavior of metal chloride complexes. In the last several years several excellent review articles and symposiums have been issued covering chloride chemistry (1 thru 6).

[Commonly accepted maintenance methods are being outdated by the rapid acceptance and use of more complicated hydraulic circuitry on modern mining equipment. It is no longer adequate to use the maintenance program to merely repair or sustain equipment operation. Ever increasing operating costs place a huge premium on lost production time. It has, therefore, placed the maintenance programs in the position of being required to alleviate equipment malfunctions on production shifts and still attain the maximum unit life from each component part.]

When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.

The separation of minerals such as apatite and scheelite by flotation from other salt-type minerals such as calcite is extremely complex owing to the close similarity between their physicochemical properties. In this paper, properties relevant to flotation such as crystal structure, solubility, surface charge and adsorption behavior of important salt-type minerals are examined along with the role of inorganic modifying agents such as silicates and polyphosphates and organic modifying agents such as starch and tannin. Flotation characteristics of these minerals are then reviewed and selected separation problems involving salt-type minerals are discussed.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.
