More complex ore bodies with lowering grades increase the challenges of maintaining high throughput, energy efficiency and required particle size for optimal downstream processing in grinding circuits. Continuous and often rapidly changing characteristics of the mill feed requires constant focus to operate the circuit at optimal level. Modern process instruments, on-line analyzers, monitoring and process control systems provide attractive and managed options to increase the circuits’ capability to respond to the challenge, often in phases and in rather short time period. Furthermore, well instrumented and performing base level automation in the grinding circuit enables advanced process control (APC) strategies that utilize measurements from the whole circuit to stabilize and optimize production. In this paper alternatives for incorporating process measurements and controls to typical grinding circuits are proposed. The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. As part or a programme to raise lead smelter capacity from 65.000 to 140.000 tons bullion per annum. one new 1000 sq. ft. updraught area sintering machine replaced eight small downdraught machines.The metallurgical specifications were based on and laboratory tests at Mount Isa. Existing practice filtering concentrate as part of the charge preparation system and discharging wet filter cake to mixing was retained. This dictated a hot return fines circuit to maintain the required feed moisture content at low return sinter ratios.The engineering specifications provided for cenlralized control of plant and process, minimum operating labour, high plant availabi;lity and highest standardsof hygeine. Crushing and conveying capacity was set to cater for the most optimistic level of sintering capacity.On start-up a number of major engineering and hygiene problems became apparent, in addition to normal teething troubles. These problems have largely been overcome and reliable operation. at less than optimum production rate is now being achieved.

Once the draw process has begun in a block cave, it is very difficult to identify which regions of the cave have successfully propagated, where the caved material is flowing from and where it is flowing to. The uncertainty around cave flow increases as the cave is drawn and can be further compounded by poor draw control practices. These uncertainties make it difficult to plan effective draw strategies to control dilution, as flow model predictions tend to gradually diverge from the actual state of the cave. There have been documented occasions where observed caving phenomena, such as muck pile surface rilling, could not be reproduced with the cave flow models of the time. The ultimate consequence of cave flow uncertainty is generally manifest as higher dilution and lower grades.In order to measure the real-time flow of caved material within an active block cave, CRC Mining and Elexon have developed, together with Rio Tinto, a cave flow monitoring system called Cave Tracker, which is being trialled at Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) in Western Australia. The Cave Tracker system at ADM comprises electronic ‘beacons’ that have been installed down long HQ diameter drill holes located above the extraction level. As the cave-back propagates and the rock mass fragments, beacons are released into the muck pile and flow along with the caved material to the drawpoints below. At Argyle, the beacons are configured to emit a signal every three days. These signals are picked up by detectors installed on the extraction and undercut levels, allowing the positions of the beacons to be determined.By examining the real-time material flow in different regions of the cave, flow mechanisms can be better defined. Draw control strategies can then be actively tailored to manage the current state of the cave. Thus, previously undetectable indications of excessive rilling, rapid cave propagation, cave stall, air gaps and dilution entry can now be identified early and assessed continuously as the cave progresses. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd has carried out a mineral resource assessment of the Coromandel region, one of the most mineral-rich regions of New Zealand. The assessment focussed on metallic minerals and clays, because these are the main commodities that have potential for increased production and export from the region (and from New Zealand).   Three steps were used in the assessment: 1) development of mineral deposit models, 2) comparison of the models with regional geology, structure, geochemistry and past mineral production to estimate the number of undiscovered mineral deposits, and 3) application of grade-tonnage models to determine the quantity and value of the known and undiscovered resources. In step 1, descriptive and grade-tonnage mineral deposit models were developed for 11 different types of mineral deposits: ò     Low-sulphidation andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     Low-sulphidation rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     High-sulphidation quartz-alunite epithermal Au ò     Porphyry Cu-Au-Mo ò     Andesite-hosted polymetallic veins adjacent to mineralised porphyry stocks ò     Zn-Pb-Ag skarn ò     Cu-Ag skarn ò     Hot spring Hg ò     Shoreline placer Ti ò     Rhyolite-hosted halloysite clay ò     Volcanic-related kaolinite clay   Step 2 was aided by a geographic information system (GIS) assembled from a number of digital spatial data sets including: a digital elevation model, an aeromagnetic map (from open file mining company data), a geological map (from the GNS QMAP project), location of areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (from the GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (from the REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data and the digital elevation model.   Based on May 2001 commodity prices, potential resources estimated for the 11 mineral deposit and grade-tonnage models total NZ$22 806 million for the metallic minerals, NZ$1000 million for halloysite clay deposits and NZ$57 million for kaolinite clay deposits.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. Minerals processing needs a step change in energy efficiency. While the search for new technology breakthroughs is important, huge gains are still available by better using existing research outcomes. This potential remains untapped due to a combination of organisational 'silos', inappropriate performance measurement, and poor science in some areas. It is time to see the elephant in the mill.

By using knowledge-based technology to create a Virtual Mining Enterprise and integrating it with existing technical and financial computer systems, a gold mining company has been able to reduce the time taken to produce a mine plan from 14 weeks to less than one week. Typically, the mine planning process requires circulating and managing large amounts of information. Even with the use of computers in todayÆs business, this is often still a manual process involving file transfers and individualised spreadsheets. Mine planning also involves understanding and managing large quantities of complex and interrelated variables. Added to this is the ever changing dynamics and constraints associated with the business of mining. These issues not only hamper the planning process but also question the validity and usefulness of the mine plans being generated. By integrating the information and knowledge of the numerous departments involved in mine planning into one core Knowledge Base - so called æone version of the truthÆ, - mining companies are able to overcome these pitfalls experienced in traditional planning methods. Once set up, the Knowledge Base creates and runs a virtual mining enterprise with which to visualise and test various scenarios of mining, business and logistical activities. The final output is an optimised enterprise-wide plan with clear and detailed instructions for each of the divisions of the company.

Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

The Martha Hill project operates with a nett surplus of water, due to the catchment of rainwater on the tailings dam and the requirement to de-water the open pit mine. It is necessary to discharge this surplus, treated as required, to the Ohinemuri River which flows past the process plant.   The treatment plant, adjacent to the process plant, handles all effluent from the Martha Hill operation including water pumped from the mine, excess water from the tailings decant, and seepage from the tailings dam underdrains. To-date the plant has treated and discharged over 800 000 tonnes of water.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.
