An alternative way to the normal practice of precipitation of jarosite, goethite, or hematite for removal of iron from zinc sulphate process liquors/ is to employ the techniques of solvent extraction. The process presented avoids the addition of any external alkali for the extraction of iron by integrating the leaching and solvent extraction steps in a hydrometallurgical zinc plant. By starting the leaching of zinc from the solid zinc calcine material with an organic solution of an acid liquid cation exchanger, the organic phase is loaded with the organic zinc salt from the direct reaction with zinc oxide. The residue from the organic leaching is transferred to a hot acid leach circuit where the remaining zinc oxide and the zinc ferrites will dissolve form¬ing an aqueous sulphate solution of zinc and iron. In the subsequent solvent extraction of iron from this aqueous leach solution, iron is exchanged with zinc from the organic phase. The commercial carboxylic acid Versatic 10 (Shell) is highly efficient for this integrated process of leaching and solvent extraction. The resulting iron-loaded organic phase is heated to 150-200 C in the presence of water whereby the iron will be directly precipitated from the organic phase as iron oxide of high purity and the regenerated organic acid is recycled to the organic leaching step for reloading with zinc.

Phosphorus is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods, and more than 90% of Florida's vast production goes to enrich the croplands of the United States and many other areas of a hungry world. In addition to this, it has wide industrial use in the manufacture of many products - detergents, baking powder, carbonated beverages, steel, matches, munitions, glass, insecticides, dyes, water softeners and innumerable others. Not only does phosphorus make life possible for us - it also helps us to live longer and better.

"The prediction of surface deformations due to underground mining operations has been a long recognized practice with case studies documented as far back as 1556 in Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica (Latin for On the Nature of Minerals). There is currently increased public awareness and regulatory scrutiny on the potential impacts of underground longwall and second mining operations, but this time the focus is placed on environmental impacts to overlaying bodies of water such as streams, rivers, wetlands, lakes, etc. (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015). Community residents and environmental groups, as well as federal and state regulatory agencies, have often cited adverse stream impacts and demanded stronger measures and scrutiny in issuing mining and reclamation permits (Booth, 2006). Mining companies are required to focus on the protection of sensitive bodies of water through the monitoring of stream flow and water quality, management and rehabilitation techniques, as well as the adoption of ""no mining zones,"" which potentially sterilize large portions of minable coal reserves. This paper examines the use of an empirical modeling approach for the protection of surface streams based on evaluation of ground strain magnitudes. Utilizing enhanced features of the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS), ground movements can be predicted accurately in the vicinity of surface bodies of water. The modeling of ground movements can aid in establishing optimum extraction sequences, while the magnitudes of anticipated subsidence can be used in the evaluation of mitigation plans when undermining surface bodies of water. INTRODUCTION When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagates toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope, and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidence initiated changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, subsidence induced strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed, ""ruptures,"" upward blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the facture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010)"

Flotation was introduced in phosphate rock processing in the late twenties and since then it has been an important part of the concentration process. More than two thirds of the rock produced in Florida is upgraded by the flotation process. Since no crushing or milling steps are involved in the material preparation, the flotation plant feed is coarser than in most other mineral flotation systems. During hydraulic processing of the rock, particles in the size range of -14, +150 mesh constitute the flotation feed. This size fraction is further classified by hydraulic sizers, stationary screens and vibrating screens into a coarse (-14, +35 mesh) and a fine (-35, +150 mesh) flotation feed. The flotation techniques for concentrating the fine feed as practiced by the Florida Phosphate producers have been standardized over the years, however, methods for upgrading the coarse feed differ from plant to plant. Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(CO3)2F]. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in fluorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

"INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Prior to 1903, the world's supply of sulphur was primarily from surface deposits in Sicily. The discovery of the first salt dome sulphur deposit in 1867 and successful development of the Frasch process for recovering the sulphur resulted in a large part of this essential element being supplied from these mines since 1920. Although the basic process is the same today, engineering and technological developments have evolved to allow its application under many adverse conditions. These and other challenges for the industry in today's environment will be discussed in the paper.

Open Pit Mine Production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty suffers from an exponentially increasing problem size as simulations and real options flexibility are used to generate and evaluate multiple production schedules. Robustness evaluation techniques attempt to evaluate a production schedule that is generated on a single set of economic parameters against several varying prices and sources of uncertainty. This approach is invalid as the corresponding optimal LOM mine plan will change for each set of evaluation parameters. Using commodity market futures and treasury bonds as production schedule economic input parameters provides fully price and time-value-of-money risked scheduling parameters that maintain a deterministic problem size. This paper will provide comparative analysis of project NPV’s coming from traditional price uncertainty evaluation based on a single fixed LOM mine plan using varying prices versus evaluation based on varying LOM plans that are both generated and evaluated using varying prices. When cross evaluating constant price mine plans against simulations, the upside potential and downside risk of a project are significantly misrepresented. INTRODUCTION The life of mine (LOM) production scheduling problem seeks to answer the question of from where and when to extract a given block within the ultimate pit limit as well as where and when to process it. Solving this problem takes into account the constraints of extracting any particular block while seeking to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mineral asset as a whole. A direct driver of the value of a block, and there for the entire asset, is the market price of the commodity in question. Complications arise when an optimal production schedule is attempted to be solved under price uncertainty. Many solution methodologies have been proposed in an attempt to optimize under this criterion, yet there are three salient aspects that are overlooked during this process. They are: • Generating a single production schedule and evaluating it against many simulated price paths. • Failing to understand the mechanism describing particular commodity price behavior • Inappropriate risk adjustment In an effort to address these aspects of production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty, we propose a methodology to define the economic parameters as input that is applicable to most if not all production scheduling approaches. This methodology will not only simplify the production scheduling process in terms of establishing block value but utilizes the risk adjustment of real options valuation to avoid the arbitrary blanket risk adjustment of traditional discounted cash flow valuation. Our findings conclude that attempting to optimize around individual price paths is futile and using a market risk adjusted single price forecast provides a justified economic basis for production scheduling while maintaining the same problem size as a deterministic production scheduling problem.

Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE's excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE's and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE's prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system's success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is the site of the only commercial diamond mine in North America. Three major lithologies are associated with the intrusion, a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in .which the majority of diamonds occur, and associated tuff. Previous studies, including mining history, geological, geophysical, petrological and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined and supported. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the U.S.

Freeport Indonesia consists of surface, civil and underground mining areas exposed to numerous geotechnical risks and hazards. PTFI uses various monitoring systems (Micro-Seismic, Firefly Light System, Mira Geoscience machine learning, etc.) to effectively manage these risks. The significant volumes of data from these sensors must be integrated into actionable information to provide the expected risk management. This occurs at the GeoEngineering Integrated Monitoring Centre (GIMC), a centralized department within the GeoEngineering Division, tasked with the responsibility to manage all geotechnical monitoring systems. The main hazard the GIMC is responsible for managing in real time is mine seismicity within the underground mining areas and the potential impacts on safe operations. Seismic system engineers achieve this objective through 24 hours a day and seven days a week operations of the GIMC, providing a centralized point of communication, alerts, evacuations and control during seismic events and emergencies. This paper will describe how the GIMC achieves its goal using reliable procedures and strategies based on detailed Triggered Action Response Plan (TARP), concise communications, novel technologies (FireFly Lighting System), and proven seismic re-entry programs to manage risk within the underground mining operations. The integration of geotechnical monitoring and reporting into a centralized group has improved the effectiveness and management of seismic risks and hazards at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mining operations.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a cooperative arrangement between a component or raw materials supplier and a manufacturing customer. The supplier must analyze his own manufacturing process and determine, predict, and control those variable elements in the circuit which affect finished product characteristics according to the customer&apos;s specifications. The results include: control of fluctuations in product characteristics to a narrow range, close communication between supplier and customer, and an increased responsibility for quality control placed on the supplier. In the mining and. processing of airfloated kaolin some unique problems arise with the SPC concept: 1) The SPC system was designed for manufacturing facilities that did not have to deal with natural variations in their raw material; 2) The airfloat process is relatively simple and offers limited opportunity to change processing steps or "fine tune" a circuit for special product needs; 3) Determining adequate sampling frequency for a plant which processes hundreds to thousands of tons per day is statistically difficult; and, 4) Due to the variety of customer industries served, different SPC programs must be set up to deal with widely varying specifications. For airfloated kaolin, SPC is "in line" process control, not after the fact "quality" control. The emphasis must be on statistically valid sampling of the kaolin ore and complete monitoring of its path through the beneficiation circuit.

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits; thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. This paper presents a review of both primary and secondary processing technologies for the recovery of rhenium.

The prime criteria in the design of underground openings with complicated geological structures is ground control. Stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical because incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress conditions. Current design procedures for complicated orientation and geometry of mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are being developed. In this study, finite element method has been used with optimization criteria to design more stable and safe underground openings.

On the basis of nonequilibrium zeta potential measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established. The results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory. This recent electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble-salt flotation systems suggests that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation results confirm this surface-charge/collector-colloid adsorption model and are presented herein.

Water chemistry data were used to identify the sources of ground-water and surface-water inflow to the IOZ block cave mine. Water samples were collected to obtain vertical and lateral hydrochemical profiles within different levels of the underground workings. Water chemistry data were evaluated in conjunction with geologic and structural information to define controls on locations of ground-water inflows, and to select targets for drilling and interception of water. Drilling has intercepted water-producing zones that were previously unidentified through mapping and drilling. The program has resulted in a reduction in water inflows to the block cave area.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors&apos; opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation.
