The conventional role or exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

Since the early 1950's exploration in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been confined largely to Selwyn basin where at least five large stratiform or massive sulfide Pb-Zn deposits have been discovered. The five ore bodies total nearly 100 million tons of 10-16% combined Pb-Zn with 1-3 oz./ton Ag. The only deposit currently in production is the Anvil Mine operating at 8,000 tons per day. Beginning in 1972, exploration in the Mackenzie Mountains, east of Selwyn basin and west of Mackenzie arch, resulted in finds of Mississippi Valley type Zn-Pb mineralization in a belt of Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks (Figure 1). Four districts have been located and intensive exploration by numerous Canadian and Arnerican mining companies is currently in progress over a length of 400 miles in the carbonate belt. The consensus is that a major new Zn-Pb province may be taking shape.

The stability of longwall chain pillars depends not only on the mechanical properties of coal and surrounding rocks, but also geological and mining conditions. In order to evaluate the effects of each, variable, the orthogonal experiment design was employed in this study for significance analysis. The study concluded that the stability of longwall chain pillars is mainly controlled by the ratio of pillar stress to pillar strength, the ratio of Young's moduluds of the roof to coal and floor to coal, entry width, pillar width and the internal friction angle of coal. Additionally, horizontal stress, panel width and mining height also play a significant role.

This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The writer is indebted to Corbin J. Robertson and Ronald B. Thompson who participated in the exploration planning of this project and to a number of other individuals who contributed to its execution and management. Petrographic work by J. M. Guilbert was used as a basis for rock and alteration classifications.

The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. Everywhere you turn today there are articles on artificial intelligence and the rapid emergence of expert systems. Expert systems form a class of software that has developed as a result of the large research effort to develop computers and software that think intelligently. By definition, an expert system is a computer program that contains the knowledge component of an expert skill, can offer intelligent advice and justify its line of reasoning. Expert systems can advise people on what actions to take and when, assist in the diagnosis of the physical condition of a human patient or piece of equipment, or even take actions without human guidance, as in process control applications. Expert systems can also explain the line of reasoning behind a particular piece of advice or query for information from the user. Expert systems can be used as advisors to newcomers in any field in which mastery is attained by many years of experience. They often can provide expertise more uniformly and rapidly than human experts. Expert systems can also provide a means of documenting expert knowledge and procedures and provide a common repository for a changing knowledge base. The expert system can represent the best expertise available, thought out in the absence of pressure situations. Each of these attributes or characteristics should be helpful in improving typical concentrator control systems.

International Minerals and Chemical Corporation operates one of six potash mines in the Carlsbad potash basin. More than 90 percent of America's potash is produced at Carlsbad and IMC accounts for about one-fifth of that amount, Since the Company began operations in 1941 it has mined nearly 50 million tons of ore. Of the two types of ore mined at Carlsbad the principal tonnage is sylvinite in which sylvite-potassium chloride-is the ore mineral. It is produced by IMC as well as by all other mines in the area, In addition to sylvinite IMC is the exclusive producer of langbeinite ore--potassium-magnesium sulfate. From its two ores, International produces a spectrum of 8 high-quality agricultural and industrial chemical products.

The emphasis in the title of this paper should be placed on the world "Total", since the detoxification of cyanide in its free and weakly-complexed form with H202 has already found application in many areas, including the treatment of mining effluents. One of the most common forms of cyanide found in gold-mill effluents is hexacyanoferrate (usually ferrocyanide), which is included in measurements of total cyanide but is too stable to be oxidized by H202 or any other conventional oxidizing agent. This has led to the view that H202 cannot be used to detoxify effluents containing hexacyanoferrates, when a limit has been set on total cyanide. A process is described in this paper which does meet this requirement, and which has already been demonstated in two Canadian gold mills. Before describing the new process, the terms "free", "total" and "weakly-complexed" cyanide will be defined as they are used in this paper.

"This paper presents two recent studies on the extent of blast damage after excavation in crystalline rock. The Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) are both under regulations to limit excavation damage during construction of tunnels. SKB is also required to limit the Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ), as this could be a potential flow path for radionuclides in the planned repository for spent nuclear fuel. Presented in this paper are investigations of blast damage from three tunnel sites, a road tunnel, an experimental tunnel in Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory and an underground subway depot. As expected the fractures resulting from the bottom charge are both longer and more frequent then those mapped in the column charge. The results show that the requirement to limit blast damage according to Swedish regulations was fulfilled for the column charge at the three studied sites.1 INTRODUCTION The Swedish Transport Administration (TRV) and The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) have both recently completed studies related the extent of blast damage from modern explosives after excavation. SKB studies focused on blast damage from pumpable emulsion explosives for underground construction (Ittner and Bouvin 2015) and hydraulic connectivity in the EDZ (Ericsson et al. 2015). TRV had a broader focus with different types of explosives including blasting for both road cuts and tunnelling with pumpable emulsion explosives. Investigations by means of geophysics were also conducted (Olsson et al. 2015). High demands on perimeter control and excavation damage is usually required for underground constructions with a long operation time, such as public tunnels for transport or underground repositories for nuclear waste. This paper presents the findings of recent Swedish studies and aims to discuss the topic in a broader context."

For conventional applications, there is limited demand for rare earth elements as well as yttrium and scandium. But the emergence of new high technology applications such as supermagnets, lasers, and superconductors should result in significant demand for some of these elements. This article examines the anticipated applications and demands for rare earth elements over the next decade. It also looks at the implications on the use of available resources. In the context of a growing demand, process methods are reviewed for the recovery of rare earth elements from conventional and unconventional resources. And the article also discusses the challenges facing the mining industry in meeting this opportunity. Reserves and reserve base The rare earths (RE) are a homogeneous group of metallic elements occupying the area from lanthanum to lutetium in group IIIB of the periodic table. Yttrium and scandium are also included with the rare earths because of their chemical similarities and common existence in nature. These 17 elements and their atomic numbers are shown in Table 1. The rare earths are widely distributed in low concentrations throughout the earth's crust (Hedrick, 1985). They occur in many rock formations including basalts, granites, shales, and silicate rocks at concentrations of 10 - 300 ug/g. They also occur in more than 160 discrete minerals. Most of these are rare, but may contain as much as 60% rare earth oxides (REO). More than 95% of the REO occurs in three minerals: monazite and bastnasite for the light rare earths and xenotime for yttrium and the heavy rare earths. Apatite and multiple-oxide minerals, such as euxenite and loparite, are also commercial sources of the lanthanides and yt-trium. Rare earths do not occur in nature in the elemental state. And, except for scandium, they do not occur in minerals as individual compounds. Bastnasite and monazite are the two major minerals used commercially to supply most of the rare earths (Hedrick, 1985). Bastnasite is a key raw material source for the cerium subgroup elements. The largest known bastnasite deposit occurs with iron ore minerals in China. The second largest deposit is situated in California. Typical rock analyses of the fluorocarbonate mineral bastnasite deposit in California show about 15% bastnasite. The REO content of that is about 50%. The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

Experiments were performed under batchwise wet grinding conditions with dolomite mineral. The vibration signal was received by an accelerometer and transmitted to a mini-processor. The signal was first stored on a digital tape recorder (OAT) in voltage format during the grinding tests. The original signal was then re-sampled and converted into data format for IBM or compatible personal computer by a digital oscilloscope. The root-mean-square (RMS) and power spectrum was estimated on the time-domain vibration signal. A partial correlation analysis was applied to the frequency-domain signal to detect the non-zero correlation between the frequency bands and the operating parameters. A multiple stepwise regression was used to locate the key frequency bands for describing a particular operating parameter. After vibration analysis, the operating parameters in grinding, for example, the mill speed, the powder filling, the pulp density, the pulp temperature and the particle size were found to be strongly correlated with a few frequency bands. The grinding process could therefore be monitored using the vibration signal.

The authors outline the development and application of blasting methods put into use 11 years ago at the Berkeley Open-Pit Mine, Butte, Montana. The blast design uses a very short delay (5 milliseconds) between detonation of explosives charges, a feature challenged several times in principle despite its success for Anaconda. Concern is expressed over the categorical rejection of very short delay blasting which can make the difference between success and failure of major mining operations. There is ample evidence to show that the method can be used successfully and not violate the concerns of the public.

A scale-invariant theory of the strength and deformability of rock masses in static equilibrium and at incipient failure is proposed. The theory provides a rationale for designing structures in rock. This paper presents results of experiments conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and theoretical methods to determine and interpret in situ strength of rock masses using the borehole shear tester.

On August 3, 1987, a hearing was held by the House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). Four panels of environmental/citizen group representatives went before the Subcommittee to report on the state of affairs (from their perspective) of the coal industry and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) As expected, these groups had little positive news to report and continued to focus on glaring deficiencies within the surface mining program. They indicated that gross abuse of SMCRA has continued over the past ten years and the states have performed poorly. Congressman Udall's opening comments perhaps best characterized the mood of the group with his statement that "The Act has not accomplished what I or the people of the coalfields had hoped." and " ? a segment of the coal industry has continued in its bitter and implacable opposition to the most basic of environmental controls."

The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines are located along a north-northeast trending structural zone in Humboldt county, Nevada approximately 40 miles northeast of the town of Winnemucca. Gold mineralization at the Getchell mine is represented principally by sulfide-rich ores, which contain significant amounts of realgar and\ orpiment, with the gold being recovered through processes which involve pressure oxidation. In contrast, oxide ores are currently being mined and processed at the Twin Creeks mine although large reserves of sulfide ores, some of which contain orpiment-realgar-stibnite, have been defined (Bloomstein et al., 1990). The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines represent major gold orebodies but very little has been published pertaining to mineral paragenesis and the characteristics of ore-forming fluids for these deposits.

This paper provides a discussion of the various federal and state laws governing water quality as related to mining operations. The specific laws addressed are the Clean Water Act, and the Arizona Mined Land Reclamation Act. Topics that will be addressed are mine water and process water discharges, storm water discharges, pollution prevention, dredge and fill, spill prevention control and countermeasure plan, and surface water protection. Proposed changes to the laws and regulations will be discussed. Compliance strategies will be suggested to prevent potential noncompliance and enforcement.

Certain external forces affect the manner in which business is conducted. and in recent years changes in the business environment have altered how some of these external forces affect the management of a business. These changes must be understood and considered in definition of the strategy of the business. Implementation of the strategy must assure commitment from all departments within a company, and this commitment sometimes involves compromises to assure that a department's goals mesh with the overall business objective such compromises must be externally motivated. i.e. for benefit of the customer. Complete implementation transcends internal departments to all aspects of managing the efforts in the marketplace.
