An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA’s Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. A process for the recovery of nickel from ammoniacal leach liquor through an integrated solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) flowsheet was tested on a pilot-plant scale. The objectives of the test run were to assess the reproducibility of laboratory-scale data in a large-scale continuous operation and to study the build up of impurities in the system. The pilot-plant test was conducted under operating conditions that were established from the laboratory-scale experiments. Efficiencies of nickel extraction, nickel stripping and ammonia scrubbing were comparable to the laboratory-scale values, whereas the current efficiency during nickel electrolysis was observed to be less than the laboratory-scale values. The electrodeposited nickel contained some cobalt and iron impurities.

FMC Gold Company start.ea processing ore at their Paradise Peak Mine in 1986. Gold, silver and mercury haye been produced from the Merrill-Crowe milling circuit and from heap leaching. There are three heap leach circuits, Paradise Peak, Ketchup Flat and County Line. The Paradise Peak and Ketchup Flat heap effluent solutions are routed into the zinc precipitation plant which is associated with the mill for recovery of the precious metals. The County Lne hea lech circuit is a stand-alone operation, again with a zinc precipitation recovery circuit. The mill was shut down in May, 1993 due to depletion of ore reserves with the remainder of the heap leach ore due to be placed on the leach pads by late summer of the same year.

Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. The subject area known as upper Dry Valley is located 15 miles due east of Soda Springs in Sections 14 and 23, Township 9 South, Range 44 East, Caribou County, Idaho. The railroad extending from Soda Springs to its terminus at El Paso's Maybe Canyon mine is 8z miles to the north in lower Dry Valley. Initial data derived from trench work in 1962 revealed a variety of econom¬ically significant alterations of the phosphatic beds related to the rather unique geomorphic development in the northern part of phosphate lease 1-012989. It was apparent that such conditions, while valid for near-surface beds in a strike direction, would be misleading if projected to the proposed depth limits of strip mining. Consequently, a subsurface mapping program was initiated in 1963 to determine: (1) the depth and horizontal extent of weathering and related phe¬nomena, (2) the depth, thickness, and quality of ore beds and intervening strata, and (3) structural geology as a guide for mining procedures. Successful use of a scintillometer in 1956 to detect the subcrop position of phosphate beds in the Smokey Canyon area of southeastern Idaho led to the conclusion that gamma radiation surveys of drill holes could be a useful aid in subsurface mapping. The objectives of this paper are: (1) briefly to describe geologic features characteristic of the phosphate lease area and (2) to demonstrate the practical application and theory behind gamma radiation logging as an effective tool in the economic evaluation of a phosphate lease.

The various copper-cobalt ores mined by Gecamines, together with typical plant applications and results, are briefly described. Intensive laboratory investigations have been undertaken in recent years to improve the metallurgical performances of the various concentrators. As a result of these tests, it was shown that the flotation of the siliceous oxide ores could be improved by increasing the efficiency of the palm oil collector (energetic conditioning, chemical emulsifier, petroleum sulfonate addition) and by varying the froth depth in the cells. A new flowsheet incorporating these modifications and a regrinding stage has been approved for the rehabilitation of the Kolwezi concentrator. For what affects dolomitic oxide ores, hydroxamates were tested as secondary collectors and, based on successful laboratory results, plant trials were run but failed due to excessive frothing. In other plant tests, xanthates were replaced by a xanthate- fatty acid mixture; plant trials over more than one year proved successful for copper, but not for cobalt. Mercaptans were tested as secondary collectors for the sulfides flotation from sulfide or mixed oxide-sulfide ores; laboratory results proved successful but, to date, no plant test has been run.

In the early 1980's BHP identified several potential gold deposits in West Africa. One of these deposits was located in Mali, near the village of Syama. As a result of extensive explo­ration activities, an oxide ore as well as an underlying sulphide ore was identified. After agreement with the government of Mali was reached the development of the deposit was undertak­en. The plan for the development of the mine included the treat­ment of the oxide ore followed by the treatment of the underly­ing transition and sulphide ore. The development of the deposit was extremely aggressive. Following the approval of the project in early 1989, engineer­ing was started, equipment purchased sitework was started, and the first ore was introduced in December of 1989. This was accomplished in spite of the difficulties of the site. These diffi­culties included: • remote site location without air or road or water access • no existing infrastructure including water, power, or communication • high health risks • limited construction and manufacturing support in West Africa The operation began with a conventional crushing/grind-ing/CIL/elution and electrowinning facility. The facility was designed to treat 2000 metric tonnes of ore per day. After start­up in December of 1989, the operation was improved to the point that plant throughput was averaging nearly 3000 tpd and running at 92 to 93% availability.

Computer simulation continues to be one of the most successful analytical applications of computers in the mining and mineral processing industries throughout the world. Through simulation, managers and engineers can explore the impact of new technologies, equipment designs, plans and operating strategies to improve their operations. It is not uncommon for a single simulation application to provide a quick payback of analysis expenses (within weeks or months) yielding long-term financial and operational dividends. The paper will present a summary of the types of software systems that are available for use on PCs and other computer systems. Support software for curve fitting, statistical analysis, and optimization of simulation models will also be presented. Methods of leveraging simulation efforts through networking and coupling of software systems will be discussed. Finally, the trends in simulation in the mineral industries will be analyzed. Areas of strength and weakness of simulation will be discussed along with the usefulness of commercial general-purpose and custom-writ- ten simulation packages. The future possibilities for simulation in the mineral industries will be outlined and predictions on trends for the future will be presented.

Over the years, improvements have been made in the recovery of nonferrous metals, including improvements in the areas of mineral processing, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy to extract cobalt as a byproduct from host minerals containing mainly nickel, copper and associated precious metals. At present, the technological emphasis is on solvent extraction coupled with electrowinning (SX-EW) for lateritic sources of supply within the Southern Hemisphere, such as in Australia and New Caledonia. Although sulfide-bearing ores, such as those found in Canada and Russia, will serve as a viable long-term source for cobalt, a ubiquitous metal, the future trend is anticipated to be in the implementation of compact and efficient SX-EW facilities that apply state-of-the -art innovation with environmental compliance This paper serves to collate the known practices for the recovery of market-grade cobalt by means of electrowinning from either an aqueous sulfate medium or chloride medium after upstream leaching, solvent-extraction and solution-purification procedures. For completeness, other commercial production techniques for the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide or oxide product are included in the summary of current cobalt processing practices.

Certain hydrologic parameters are affected by development of a mine. These include the area, yield, and storage in a watershed. Alteration of these parameters results in variations in lake levels and stream flow rates and in changes in ground water elevations and gradients. These factors have become increasingly important in light of present environmental design standards and government regulations. Mitigation of adverse hydrologic impacts can be costly and can create operating constraints which complicate the mining process.

Technical progress depends on strategic objectives and a concept showing how to benefit from the effects of novel techniques in an innovation process and how to implement them creatively in harmony with manpower capabilities. With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

But one important truth remains unchanged; projects are built by people. What separates winning projects from the rest? Great people, working in great organizations. In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. "The Doha Metro Project is one of the most relevant ongoing tunneling projects. The whole project consists of about 100 km of tunnels with 21 EPB TBMs working in the same period. Due to the variability of the geological formations, the soil conditioning is a relevant aspect of this project because the parameters should be frequently adjusted to achieve the best performances of the TBMs. The study of the soil conditioning has been carried out accurately to obtain the best results on site. The study of the geotechnical data, the choice of the most suitable foaming agents and polymers and the laboratory study of the soil conditioning has been a fundamental part of the job. The application of the soil conditioning products on site with the analysis of the TBM data have confirmed the preliminary study results with some correlation between the features of the ground and the soil conditioning parameters to be used. INTRODUCTION Phase 1 of the Doha Metro Underground project is composed by 3 lines able to bring passengers to all the points of interest in the Qatar capital city. The Red Line, also called coastal line, connects the north of the city to the south, and to the new Hamad International Airport, following the coast line. The Golden Line, called Historic Line, will connect the southern area of Doha to the “Aspire zone” the area of the city where many state of the art sport centers are located, passing through the old city center. The Green Line, named education line, will connect the old city center to the Doha Education City. All the lines are realized with 2 tubes, single track. The whole underground project is realized with 21 TBMs, excavation diameter of 7.10 m. The project has been divided in 4 packages, for a total excavation length of more than 100 km. The need to underpass roads, existing buildings, and to excavate, in some areas, at less than 100 m from the coast line, forced the choice of a tunneling system with Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), that involves in the project another fundamental aspect of this tunneling system: the soil conditioning. The soil conditioning has multiples functions in the EPB system such as to make the soil suitable to properly apply the pressure on the tunnel face and to be extracted effectively with the screw conveyor. To properly study this topic it was necessary to study the geological formations to be excavated, the hydrogeological conditions of the underground, the foam injection systems of the EPB TBMs and to perform specific tests to evaluate a suitable conditioning to be verified and adjusted during the real scale application."

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

It introduces a nonlinear framework that transforms the batch grinding equation into the Rosin-Rammler distribution, providing more accurate analysis under different operating conditions. The purpose of this research is to examine the post-failure behavior of coal as a mass and examine the relationship between the results of this study and prior laboratory investigations of the post-failure behavior of coal as a material. Instrumentation to measure changes in stress and deformation was placed in a headgate yield pillar and will be monitored as the face passes the area. A battery powered, automated data acquisition system, capable of recording up to 9,000 data points, is currently used to remotely monitor changes in vertical and horizontal pillar stress.

The higher stress zone adjacent to an underground opening causes a velocity anomaly that can be mapped in favorable conditions with an acoustic cross-borehole logging system. Bureau personnel used a specialized system at the Colorado School of Mines test site near Idaho Springs, Colorado, to locate the Edgar Mine tunnel and its associated stress anomaly. Data from the logging system' were processed with a tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to map the opening and the location of the high velocity zone around the opening. The velocity imagery from tomographic analysis compared favorably with predictions from numerical modelling of the location of the stress anomaly.

In Italy at the moment there is a program which involves for the future the exploitation of two uranium mines which are now in the research stage. About one hundred and fifty workers are at present employed in those facilities. An health physics surveillance program is under way and has been designed to fulfill the requirements due to the future exploitation of the two mines. A complete evaluation of the total dose (external + internal) received by the workers will be given together with a detailed analyses of the technical methods employed for such evaluations. The external doses are evaluated on the basis of individual TLD dosimeters, while the evaluation of the internal doses is mainly due to an enviromental survillance program of the radon and radon daughter air concentration inside the mines. The criteria established for the assessment of the sampling procedures, sampling intervals and dose evaluation related to the radon doughter exposure are reported. The external dose received by the workers are lower than 0.2 m Sv~month and the internal exposure less than 6.4 IO-3 J.h.m-3 /year or using the old units 2 WLM/year.

Mexico has an area of about 2 million km2 (772,260 sq miles), with volcanic activity, large shores and mountainous areas reaching as high as 6000 m (19,680 ft) above sea level. These conditions are favorable for most mineral deposits, some of commercial value and others as a source of mineral samples. In addition to its vast mineral wealth, Mexico has another valuable asset in its people. Even before the discovery of America, natives were successfully mining metals. During the colonial days, the mineral deposits were mined to increase the wealth of Spain. All this experience was passed from generation to generation. It created a tradition of mining and minerals processing engineers that currently accounts for about 182,000 people supported by mining-related activities. Nonmetallic minerals in Mexico have been mined by natives since the early days. They knew the value of kaolin clays for pottery, as evidenced by archeological findings.
