With the dissolution of the former USSR and a welcoming of foreign, minerals expertise by a host of developing countries, a "new," more international, world of minerals is open to the mining industry. However, even in the new frontier, the old laws of nature still apply. For those attendees of the 98th annual Northwest Mining convention, the adage "survival of the fittest" commanded particular attention. Miners, engineers, geologists and other unique species traveled to Spokane in December to learn of adaptations they can make to assure, or at least prolong, their place in the mineral industry's land of the living. You have heard the tales of the spotted owl and the desert tortoise, but add to this endangered list the North American mining industry. During a session on international investment criteria, D. Silver of Balfour Holdings (Littleton, CO) blamed excessive environmental regulation, 1872 Mining Law revision and the anti-mining-and-business attitude of our government for migrations from and extinctions within the domestic mining population. "We've been on a death curve for some time," Silver said, "with a lower birth rate and a higher death rate. In the last four years, we've lost 60% of the gold producers in North America, and we're down to 110 companies. The entire industry has lost about 400 companies and is now down to 2800." Unreasonable regulation founded on emotion rather than scientific fact has been the chief cause of death, according to many of the convention speakers. B.J. Kennedy, president and chief operating officer of FMC Gold (Reno, NV), emphasized, "We have accepted a regulatory environment - but we oppose being strangled to death by unreasonable regulations."

The set of discoveries for a mining district or camp is a reflection of the exploration history. In the western Abitibi greenstone belt of Ontario, future exploration can be guided by a study of statistical trends of known gold deposits. In this area simple trends indicate a strong decrease in the contained quantity of gold discovered through time. Much of this decrease is attributed not to falling mining grades but to smaller tonnages of ore. A plot of the largest discovery in each ten year time period suggests that deposit discoverability is following a size-biased sampling model. Cumulative ounces of discovered gold indicate that an asymptotic value has been reached where exploration is not expected to add significantly to known reserves. This is substantiated by a downward trend in the exploration success ratio of the number of new deposits discovered versus the number of new mineral prospects. The set of discovered deposits reflects a non-random sampling process where size- biased modeling suggests that the largest deposits will be discovered early in the exploration effort. It is the exceptionally large deposit contributing to the observed size-biased distribution. Although this pattern is observed for the western Abitibi the model is complicated by recent, large reserve additions that are attributed to the original discovery. There is present in this area a subtle learning process in exploration leading up to the largest discovery. For comparison a learning model was estimated using cumulative size of discovery per unit of time. This model yielded results consistent with the statistical trends and is thought to be a superior forecast of future discoveries in this region.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). The use of ceramic-in-rubber pulley lagging on bulk material belt conveyors is increasing. Many of the applications have been on pulleys originally installed with rubber lagging. There is a consensus that the fiction characteristics of the ceramic material are significantly better but the factors quoted vary, possibly because the more complex traction mechanism of the dimpled ceramic elements on the belt is not well understood. In this paper we will report and evaluate field data from a number of field installations to provide a study of actual friction characteristics in successful applications for those who desire reliable data for using ceramic-in-rubber lagging in new conveyor designs.

My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

Increasing quantities of nutrients and pesticides in agricultural runoff in recent years has caused the more developed western nations to become concerned about diffuse agricultural pollution. Thus, the problem of diffuse pollution is of greater importance and concern for any integrated water quality management programme. The above mentioned sources and activities causing pollution to groundwater cannot be completely avoided. The best solution is to entail a firm understanding of the principles of solute transport through porous media. The complex factors that control the movement of contaminants in porous media and the resulting behavior of contaminant plume are usually intricate to assess because of interaction of many factors such as dispersion, advection, sorption, degradation, volatilization, etc. As accurate quantification of solute under field conditions is inherently difficult, the fate of nitrate and phosphate have been analyzed in laboratory column and channel studies. From the analysis of the breakthrough curves, the dispersion co-efficient for nitrates and phosphates through sandy soil was found to be 0.262 m2/d and 0.114 m2/d for column studies, 0.321 m2/d and 0.231 m2/d for channel studies respectively. The column studies revealed that the concentration of nitrates and phosphates increased steadily in the first few days (around 5 days) and then it increased rapidly after 8 to 10 days. However, it attained equilibrium after 20 days. Similarly, the channel studies revealed a steady increase in concentration of nitrates and phosphates in the first few days (1 to 2 days) and rapid increase up to 15 days and there after it attained equilibrium. In the study, one-dimensional analytical model has been developed which include the advection, dispersion, and a characteristic term called ?total elimination rate?. The comparative study of column and channel studies, and model output (in which the term total elimination rate ?K? is considered as zero) exhibited a variation of 30 to 50 % in leaching characteristics of pollutants (nitrates and phosphates).

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 km. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fiber in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd., of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This chapter presents the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits are outlined. Subsequent work by other companies is mentioned, but not de- scribed in detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. who have been involved in the project. In particular, thanks go to Ramon Farmer, N.G. Corner, and A.W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this chapter are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in the discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program. REGIONAL SETTING Ultramafic rocks on the South Island of New Zealand are thought to be Permian in age and occur between crystaIline and metamorphic continental rocks of Precambrian through Cretaceous age in the west, are thought to have once been part of the Antarctic subcontinent, and the extensive geosynclinal graywacke deposits of the Mesozoic New Zealand geosyncline in the east. They consist of the Dun Mountain ultramafics, a 130 km long segment of ultramafic rocks located at the north end of the South Island, and the Red Mountain ul- tramafics that occur in a zone 200 km long in the south half of the South Island as shown in Fig. 1. These two belts, once contiguous, have been offset a distance of 560 km by the still active Al- pine fault, which is analogous in character and offset to the San Andreas fault of the United States. The ultramafic rocks occur within a sequence of Permotriassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that probably formed at the eastern margin of the continental plate. The ultramafics appear to be tectonically emplaced between Permian lithologies in the Dun Mountain belt (Coleman, 1966), and at the base of or between Permian volcanics and sediments in the Red Mountain belt. The Permotriassic ultramafic volcanic sequence of the Red Mountain ultramafic belt appears to be a typical ophiolite sequence. Ultramafic rocks, mixed mafic intrusive rocks and volcanics, volcanic rocks, and volcanoclastic sediments occur in apparent superposition from east to west in the area of Red Mountain. Farther south, ultramafic rocks are associated with basaltic volcanic rocks and some sediments, and still farther south are emplaced entirely in sediments. These structural compIications of the normal ophiolite sequence have resulted from the coincidence of Permian subduction, early Mesozoic extension and sedimentation, and Cretaceous subduction along the same plate margin (Landis and Bishop, 1972). This paper discusses the development of a SLAM II* simulation model with imbedded optimization modules designed M evaluate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies. The model traces through a sequential exploration program, evaluating each deposit site based upon geologic information and potential profitability of the site. At a specified time during the simulation, a new production plan is developed for currently producing deposits which takes into account the planning horizon and deposits which are currently being explored. Potential uses of the model by geologists, engineers, and management decision makers include setting corporate objectives and policies on exploration and production. The model is also useful for testing past decisions to evaluate decision making criteria and evaluating mineral deposit profit potential.

Since 1992 the Grasberg Mine, located in the remote regions of Indonesia, has utilized the Modular Mining System. Over the last several years, major steps have been taken to maximize this productivity enhancement system. These steps include; the Automated Lineup, the Linear Program upgrade, tracking of Mean Time Between Failure, a MEDS system interface, a VMIS system interface, and implementation of the new Graphical Operator Interface Console with Global Positioning, This application of new technology and innovation has lead to improved performance, understanding and reporting, as well as the quality of the Indonesian Engineers. These efforts have contributed 10 Grasberg achieving one of the lowest mining costs in the copper industry.

This paper provides a summary of the studies performed over a period of more than fifteen years by the Italian National Research Council's Mineral Processing Institute in Rome to develop applications for the use of chelating reagents in the flotation of metallic minerals. A description is given of the various phases through which the studied progressed, starting with the combined use of commercial chelating reagents and a neutral oil and then moving on to the synthesis of new long-chain chelate collectors for the flotation of sulphide and oxidized Pb, Zn and Cu minerals. After a series of preliminary tests which confirmed the possibility of floating various metallic minerals with commercial reagents containing chelating groups exerting specific action on given cations, the studies were addressed to the development of a theoretical method of choosing chelating groups that exert selective action on one metallic mineral rather than others. The theoretical approach was based on thermodynamic data concerning the chemical equilibria in solution. The validity of the method has been proved in numerous cases by flotation tests on pure minerals. Subsequently the research was directed towards the design and synthesis of reagents with a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure containing chelating groups for Pb and Zn and an alcoxyl chain of various length, position and configuration. The flotation results obtained on oxidized and mixed Zn-Pb ores provided interesting pointers for designing the nonpolar portion. The structural criteria identified via these studies were interpreted on the basis of chemical and steric considerations. A description is given of a new synthetic chelate collector which is effective in the selective flotation of Cu minerals from complex sulphides. The fact that this reagents is more selective than xanthate is demonstrated by comparative flotation tests on actual ores.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. In the mobile crushing unit system trucks are replaced by a conveyor resulting in a "continuous" almost "fully-automated" operation with all its attendant advantages. In consequence, overall operating costs are greatly reduced. Because of the new designs of large mobile crushing units that have been brought on-to the market, the use of these plants has increased significantly during the last three years. This paper describes the designs of new mobile crushing units, and emphasizes the advantages that such plants offer to the rock products and mining industries. It examines operating costs, and indicates the conditions in which the application of these plants is most profitable.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Open-pit mine planning is a key process in the definition of mineral reserves and their efficient removal. Ore in open-pit mines is extracted bymining sequential pits called pushbacks. Pushbacks need to satisfy complex geometrical constraints to ensure the efficient usage of equipment. To date, no algorithms that both account for those constraints and maximizeNPV, are commercially available. Therefore, pushback design is done by engineers relying on their expertise to incorporate practical features intothe output of commercial tools. In this article, we present a new algorithm that produces close to optimal practical pushbacks and we illustrate its performance in real mines.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

"The cPlant is a modular flotation plant which has been designed to minimize capital expenditure and risk. The plant is based on a number of standard modules, for both flotation and ancillary equipment, which can be configured to give the required flowsheet for the ore being treated. All of these modules can be rapidly deployed and erected onsite, minimizing not only engineering time and site preparation but reducing the time taken to get the plant up and generating revenue. Given the paradigm shift in flotation circuit design that has been employed in the cPlant it may allow smaller, previously uneconomic deposits to be exploited and create a more cost efficient upgrade route for existing plants. This paper introduces the cPlant and presents a case study comparing EPC cost and development timing of a cPlant against a traditional flotation circuit design. INTRODUCTION In the development of any mining project the cost associated with process plant engineering, equipment procurement and installation can affect the financial viability of a project. This is of special significance for smaller scale mining projects which perhaps don’t have the mine-life or revenue generation to justify the payback on a modern processing facility. Listening to customer feedback and understanding the challenges that small to mid-sized projects can face lead Outotec to the development of the cPlant. Modularization of mineral processing plants isn’t a new idea with a number of examples being reported in literature for gravity gold (Cabot, Trudel and Cabot, 2001; Gray et al., 2006), dense medium separation (September and Abate, 2006) and even hydrometallurgy (Saario et al., 2013). All these plants have been developed to try to improve on the traditional economics associated with fixed processing plants. Using standardized modules to construct a plant reduces engineering time and design costs which can both be beneficial to the outcome of a project. In addition the modular nature of the plant lends itself to transport to remote sites and rapid installation with only minimal site preparation required. A plant of modular design also has several other advantages over its conventional cousins. Firstly it is relatively easy to expand by duplicating existing modules. Secondly the modules can be treated as building blocks for the process and rearranged if a change in conditions requires flowsheet adjustment. Thirdly, there is potential to disassemble and remove the modular units at the end of the mine life. The ability to easily disassemble, re-pack and transport the plant to a new location not only is important to the long term environmental footprint of an operation but can also be seen as a bonus to an operator that has a number of small ore deposits. If applied in this way modular plants have the potential to create a whole new operating model for previously unviable ore deposits."

The Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of their processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step towards this goal is the application of a Digital Twin concept to provide Virtual Instruments. Haile has engaged ANDRITZ to implement Virtual Instruments at their grinding area hydrocyclones and at their tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The Digital Twin is a first principles IDEAS1 ™ simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions, and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters. INTRODUCTION OceanaGold’s Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was first mined in 1827, and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October, 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile Operation. The current operation began in 2017 as an open pit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 6,350 tpd ore, and 2017 production was 118k oz gold, with 140 to 155k oz gold expected in 2018. Proven and Probable reserves exceed 3 Moz. The process, as shown in Figure 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a Semi-Autonomous Grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon in leach (CIL) leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile Operation’s inaugural gold pour took place January 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through at least the year 2030. Based partially on prior experience of some key OceanaGold personnel with automation services from ANDRITZ on other projects, OceanaGold decided to include ANDRITZ on the Haile project. The scope of these services for Haile included design and supply of the process control application software, an ANDRITZ dynamic process simulator for operator training, and ANDRITZ Advanced Control Expert (ACE) ®2 systems for the SAG mill, ball mill, and rougher flotation areas. Since startup, ANDRITZ has continued to provide services for the site, particularly related to PLC and HMI equipment, programming and support, ACE system expansion, and the implementation of Virtual Instrumentation. The implementation of this new Virtual Instrumentation technology at Haile is consistent with Haile goals: increased automation, a change in the role of the operator from interactor to monitor, and improved stability by removing human error.

"This paper presents the evaluation Montana Tech completed for the Western Energy Company Rosebud Mine relating to the benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies over traditional methods for topographic surveys. These technologies include Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), photogrammetry, and laser scanning/LIDAR. Utilizing these technologies, large areas such as reclamation areas and cast blasts can be surveyed in a timely manner for use by the mining operation. The areas that were evaluated were the improvements in the safety of employees and the time required to collect data. In addition, there is also a potential cost savings for the operation, all while not affecting the accuracy of the data that is collected. PROJECT BACKGROUND Accurate topographic survey data is critical to successful surface mining operations. It is used for mine planning and design as well as permit compliance. Currently, employees typically collect survey data using GPS equipment or total stations. These methods can be dangerous, as they require employees to work near large operating mobile equipment, edge of high walls, and on piles of stacked steep-sloped loose material. Aerial and satellite photographs, performed by a contractor, can be used to obtain some of this information, but it is expensive and may not be attainable during overcast conditions. Montana Tech, along with the Rosebud Mine, conducted research on the accuracy, cost, and other benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies. Some of the methods studied include, but are not limited to, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Vehicles (UAV), photogrammetry, and laser scanning. These methods were evaluated to determine if these technologies provide mining companies with a safer, cost effective, and accurate method to collect data for surface mining operations. The project scope was to evaluate various surveying techniques to determine which techniques would be applicable for the Rosebud Mine and complete a trade-off study comparing the new techniques with currently used methods. The trade-off study included an analysis of the technological differences between the methods, safety and legal considerations for the new techniques, operational limits, and the costs associated with each technique. Working with the Rosebud Mine team, techniques were selected for field trial and accuracy comparison. This paper presents a literature review of applicable technical papers and a summary of the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for UAS, followed by a study comparing conventional GPS topographic surveys with UAS based systems and laser scanning systems. The comparison of the various methods was broken into the following four categories: operator safety analysis, time comparison, survey accuracy, and cost analysis. After all of these portions of comparison were completed a recommendation was provided based on the evaluation that was performed."

Introduction The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry, too, is affected by the drought. Research is lagging. Hardpressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. Mining companies should not shower universities with philanthropy, but a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that could be adopted by the mining industry. An equal partnership arrangement between a university and an industry for conducting research is proposed. The concept is not that a corporation sponsors and a university performs the research. Nor does it call for educational contributions or giveaways from industry. Rather, the corporation and the educational institution enter into a cooperative research endeavor, a full and equal partnership. Both parties contribute and both share the benefits. A key to the relationship is that it has a single objective: it must generate profits or reduce costs for the company. Working Model Recent literature is replete with examples of proposals for joint research endeavors, involving both contracts and grants, between industry and universities (Bronwell, 1971; Bugliarello, 1978; Branscomb, 1981; Sanford and Holland, 1982). They are all good proposals and offer something to both parties. They are, however, not widely supported. Few have received a favorable nod from the US mining industry. Though it may be logical, for example, to remake the American Mining Congress (or some new consortium) in the mold of umbrella-type industry organizations to fund cooperative research with mining institutions, such proposals have never flown. What model, then, will work? First, look for a model that has worked in industry in general. Second, seek to apply it to mining specifically. There is a model project that satisfies the first of those criteria. It is a project complicated by a third party, in addition to a corporation and a university. In January 1983, the "Factory of the Future Project" was initiated between The University of Alabama (UA) and General Motors Corp. (GM). The United Auto Workers (UAW) is a third party to the agreement. The factory was GM's Rochester Products Division manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, also home of UA's main campus (Fig. 1). Saving a Plant The agreement came about at the initiative of GM and the UAW. Faced with having to close the plant because of excessive production costs, company and union officials proposed to the university that an applied research facility be established at the plant. The university would operate the laboratory, dedicated to $470,000 a year cost reductions for the company. The school would lease the 5.1 km2 (55,000 sq ft) space for $470,000 a year for three years. Any savings effected by the university's research effort would be credited toward to the rent. GM said the small factory, which made replacement carburetors

Wide use of adsorption methods for metal recovery is one of the most important achievements of gold metallurgy of the last decades. Anion exchange resins or activated carbons may be used as adsorbents. This paper presents a brief overview of IRGIREDMET effotts on development, testing and implementation of techno­logical flowsheets using both adsorbent types and attempt to compare their technological properties. IRGIREDMET Institute was founded in 1871 as a laboratory for gold smelting and gold ore testing. In 1930 it obtained the status of the Research Institute. IRGIREDMET functioned as leading research center for gold mining industry in the former Soviet Union. At present it is the Open Joint Stock Company dealing with all s01t of research and design works for gold min­ing (ranging from geology to gold refinery). IRGIREDMET started development of ion exchange technol­ogy in 19641• The first stage of work (1964-1970) including development of principle flowsheet of RIP process was carried out jointly with the Moscow VNIIKHT Institute (All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Technology)2• The flowsheet of RIP process is presented in Fig. I and includes the following basic operations: gold adsorption from pulp; washing of loaded resin; acid treatment; thiourea adsorp­tion; gold elution by acid thiourea solution; resin washing to remove thiourea; alkaline treatment of resin; resin washing and gold recovery from eluates by electrowinning. The technology developed and equipment used were tested for treatment of clayey ore of Kuranakh deposit at a pilot plant of the Lebedinsky gold complex ("Aldanzoloto" company, Yakutia, Russia). The pilot plant throughput was 200 t/day. At the same time IRGIREDMET conducted the tests on ion exchange technology for ore and concentration products of oper­ating gold plants and for ores of new deposits. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were done and developed initial data and process design criteria for designing of 15 plans of the former Soviet Union. In the course of this work a great number of newly synthe­sized anion exchangers including strong and weak base resins was studied, the peculiarities of anion exchange resins using two different raw material types ( ores and concentrates includ­ing clayey, carbonaceous, silver bearing, arsenic, antimony and base metals bearing products); some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption of gold and silver from silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, design of adsorption equipment including pulsation columns, design of electrowinning cells were developed; conditioning technology for pulp with complex ion composition prior to gold and silver adsorption was developed, etc.3·8• IRGIREDMET specialists took part in commissioning of practically all the plants in the former Soviet Union using RIP and RIL process including Lebedinsky, Kuranakh, Sovetsky, Karamken, Matrosov's plant and Mnogovershinny plants. Due to this works RIP process became standard technology for Russia and the CIS.
