Rod mills were developed, as a logical substitute for the rolls crusher when larger tonnages had to be handled, on a continuous basis. Today, with even larger tonnages to process, the trend is to install larger equipment, automate the plant and develop the highest availability possible, in order to cut costs. The rod mills, because of design limitations in size and speed 1'2, are not able to meet these new requirements. The autogenous mill was a timely development and serves as an excellent alternative for ores that are suitable to this type of grinding. When ores are not amenable to autogenous grinding, selection of a flowsheet is dictated by liberation characteristics and unit operations to be used for mineral recovery.. The following alternatives are available: (a) Multiple rod mills, capable of drawing no more than 2000 HP each, followed by ball mills. (b) Gyradisc crusher followed by two stages of ball mill grinding.3 (c) Tertiary crushing followed by closed circuit single stage ball mills grinding to approximately -100 mesh, as in the copper industry. The paper contains the results of the physical and mathematical simulations (based on the finite elements simulation) of the length and shape influence on the mechanical strength of the brex. Key words: Stiff extrusion, extruded briquettes, BREX, mechanical strength, cold strength, compressive strength, tensile splitting strength, oval shape, finite elements simulation. INTRODUCTION Extruded briquettes (BREX) exhibit a set of unique properties when compared with briquettes formed by alternative methods. Brex generally have sufficient integrity right after extrusion to withstand the necessary handling and stockpiling and does not require any special means and tools for the green briquettes strength conservation. In a typical die without an ancillary cutting device green brex tend to have very high length to diameter (L/D) or length to section area ratios. For round hole dies the brex are typically 5to 6 times the diameters and even longer. Stiff-extrusion allows also for the very easy changing of the forming dies. Dies with different cross-sectional shapes of the brex (round, ovals, square, hollow structures and many other two dimensional shapes) are possible, and common. The results of our investigations show how these geometrical shape factors contribute to overall quality of the brex both in terms of strength and as new charge components in metallurgical furnaces and processes [2-4]

During much of the 1970s and 1980s, world metal consumption grew more slowly than during the 19505 and 1960s. The slowdown contributed to surplus capacity and low real prices because actual consumption was consistently less than expected as new mining and mineral processing capacity came on stream. Over the last year or so, however, world metal consumption has picked up noticeably, raising the question, Has metal demand returned to the long-run growth rates more typical of the 1950s and 1960s than of the 1970s and 1980s? This paper examines this possibility and, more generally, assesses the factors that will shape demand for the major metals over the longer term. TRENDS IN METAL CONSUMPTION The extent to which metal consumption has recaptured the brisk growth rates typical of the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s is shown in Figure 1. This figure traces the consumption of crude steel, primary aluminum, refined copper, refined lead, and refined zinc between 1960 and 1987 for the western world, consisting of the OECD countries (including the United States), and the developing countries. Consumption increased in 1987 for all five metals, and preliminary data for the first six months of 1988 suggest even more substantial increases, at least for the United States (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1988). However, Figure 1 also shows that the recent increases in consumption are not untypical of similar surges during earlier periods of economic expansion and thus may reflect only cyclical or temporary factors. In short, the available data are unable to provide a clear indication of whether recent increases in metal consumption reflect the beginning of a new era of faster growth or simply a cyclical and temporary upturn associated with the expansionary phase of the business cycle. Consequently, to pursue this issue, we are forced to examine the underlying forces that will shape metal demand trends over the next decade. The approach we have taken involves two steps. The first examines the prospects for overall economic growth. The expectation is, the faster the economy expands, the faster the production of metal-containing goods grows.2

The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement - fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified .by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2) the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since December of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the grout-rebar system.

[Duquesne Light Company's three power plants in western Pennsylvania are now receiving high BTU clean coal from a new coal preparation plant. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

The disposal of hazardous chemical wastes will be one of the major environmental issues of the 1980's. Approximately 50 million tons of hazardous wastes are produced yearly. One of the major aspects of the problem is the siting, design and construction of environmentally acceptable disposal facilities to accommodate this huge volume of material. Surface mines have been considered attractive for development as disposal sires for several reasons: 1. Surface mines represent an open pit that can conveniently serve as a repository for wastes. This could represent a significant economic savings when compared with sites on undisturbed lands chat might require extensive excavation or embankment construction.

The photographic measurement of bubble diameter is tedious and restricted to vessels with transparent walls and relatively low bubble concentrations. A new method for predicting bubble diameter in a flotation column has been developed and confirmed by comparison with measured mean bubble diameter (Yianatos et al., 1987) Flotation columns are not mechanically agitated. This note describes an extension of Ms method to a mechanically agitated flotation machine. A recent publication by Szatkowski (1987) provided sufficient data to calculate bubble diameter by the proposed method and compare with values determined photo- graphically. Method In a two-phase system (gas and liquid), bubble diameter (db), superficial gas rate (Vg) and liquid rate (Vl), and gas holdup (Eg) are linked by two relationships (see the nomenclature at the end of the paper for definitions of symbols). [ ] Equation 1 is the definition of slip velocity (relative gas to liquid velocity) for a countercurrent gas-liquid system, and equation 2 is an adaptation (Yianatos et al., 1987) of the expression of Masliyah (1979) for hindered settling in a multispecies system. The solution for bubble diameter is by repetitive substitution of estimates of db in equation 2 until the calculated Ubs is equal to the measured Ubs in equation 1. Results and discussion Table 1 presents the data obtained by Szatkowski (1987) from a mechanically agitated laboratory flotation machine. The machine generated bubbles by directing a gas stream into the vicinity of a disk rotating at Ngh speed (up to 8000 rpm) in the flotation slurry. The air was completely dispersed in a swarm of fine bubbles. A photographic technique was used to determine the distribution of bubble size. The mean diameter and standard deviation were then calculated. Table 1 provides all the information necessary for computing bubble diameter (Vl is assumed zero). The calculated bubble diameter is presented in Table 1 as d;. Figure 1 plots measured versus calculated bubble diameter and shows reasonable agreement between values. There is an apparent tendency to undercalculate the small bubbles and overcalculate the large ones.

The reclamation of surface land areas disturbed during the course of coal recovery became a major, universal consideration upon the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This legislation not only established reclamation as an absolute requirement, but also presented guidelines for reclamation standards and required bond-posting procedures to assure completion of the reclamation process. The Office of Surface Mining was established to enforce the provisions of the Congressional mandate by promulgating specifically detailed regulations and supervising the State participation in this regulatory process. The major operational consequences of the reclamation-related provisions of the Act and the OSM regulations are the increased costs and complex procedures necessary to accommodate the regulatory authorities. It is anticipated that many of these costs and procedures have not been adequately evaluated by either the coal operators or the regulatory bodies. It is, therefore, necessary to proceed with an examination of the general reclamation processes, the effect of these processes on product costs, and the methods, if any, which may be utilized to minimize their impact on the overall operation.

1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. Improving the state-of-the-art of tunneling is a continuing challenge to those involved in underground construction. New methods and procedures are usually evolved over a relatively long period of time as compared to advancements in other types of construction. To a large extent this is probably due to the fact that tunneling deals with a material or medium - the rock structure - whose physical properties are not only extremely varied, but in many instances virtually unknown until time of penetration. This hovering of the unknown tends to make "non believers" of many and at best leads to a general reluctancy of accepting new ideas or procedures. The situation is further complicated by: 1) discrepancies in terminology and respective meanings as used by different disciplines to describe, define or evaluate pertinent factors and their relative effect on the tunneling process and 2) the fact that no two tunneling situations are identical with respect to either geological conditions or construction and contractual requirements. In spite of the above there have been many successfully completed tunnels which make it apparent that both the technical and practical expertise needed to develop or project improvements is available within the industry. Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.

Murray mine was one of the first Mechanized cut and fill underground gold operations in Northern Nevada. At the end of 2002 mine production began to decline and Murray entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary, in previously condemned areas, and in highly challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering, and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed Murray to remain in operation today. History The Murray mine is located on the Jerritt Canyon property, which is located 45 miles north of Elko, NV in the Independence mountain range. Mining operations started at Jerritt Canyon in 1980 out of several open pits. In 1993 underground mining began in conjunction with a decline of surface mining operations. The transition from surface mining to underground mining moved the property into a new era. At the time there were limited examples of successful underground operations in the area from which to draw experience. Several mining methods were attempted with varying degrees of success and underhand cut and fill proved to be the most effective method. To date Murray has mined 1.2 million ounces at an average grade of .335 OPT utilizing this mining method.

As part of a research program to develop a coal-handleability index that would predict the ease with which a coal would flow through a handling system, an apparatus was developed to directly measure the unconfined Yield strength and bulk density of consolidated-coal samples. The new test apparatus provides a fast and simple method for determining the strength and compressibility parameters that are associated with the handling characteristics of crushed coal. Comparative tests were conducted using a low-stress triaxial-test apparatus. To check the accuracy of the new method, four coals with a variety of moisture contents and gradations were tested using the new method. These tests indicate that the new test device yields valid results. Further, the speed and ease of operation of the new device makes it suitable for quality control and quality assurance in plants.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. he selection of mill design parameters to suit the applica­tion requirements can result in quite different operating parame­ters for each generic type of application, even though the basic mechanical layout of the mills may remain similar. The selection of the type and size of grinding media is very important to efficient and cost-effective operation, and to ensuring that the milled product achieves the required properties. Accordingly, the grinding media selection is seen as an integral part of the mill design. Consideration of the requirement for classification is important in order to achieve the optimum mill and circuit performance. This can lead to the circuit feed not being classified for a steady feed with minimal slimes and a low size reduction ratio. Feed containing on-size particles would be deslimed by open circuit classification. Closed circuit classification is performed where the feed fluctuates. The rheological characteris­tics of the circuit feed slurry can have an influence on mill performance, and needs to be allowed for. A common misconception frequently encountered is the belief that "a mill is just a mill". This is not the case with stirred types of mills, since the operating parameters selected for the mill can have a large effect on the product characteristics. For example, horizontal shaft high speed stirred mills have a com­pletely different grinding action to vertical shaft low to medium speed stirred mills, which results in large differences between the surface area produced at a given product size (Liddell, 1986). Hence, it can be misleading to apply test results or design procedures obtained from one type of mill to other types for scale-up. The Metprotech stirred mill, as applied in the mining and minerals industries, is a low to medium speed vertical shaft mill. The basic design has been discussed previously (Liddell, 1989). Currently, the largest mills that have been manufactured have an installed power of 400 kW. The largest chamber volume at this power is 6000 litres, containing IO t of grinding media. It is intended that the installed power will increase up to lMW as applications requiring larger sizes arise.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.
