This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2013 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2013: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Halifax, NS, Canada (formerly Metals Economics Group (MEG); 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2013 as compiled by the USGS; and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities, including economic, social and political conditions, that were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop commodity and regional compilations, reported statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2013 for 20 nonfuel mineral commodities based on surveys returned by companies primarily focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (coal, iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007. MEG included data on the commodities lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum for the first time in 2010 because of the increased topical significance of these commodities. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the MEG and SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. Budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The post-1999 budget surveys by MEG and SNL cover at least 90 percent of world?s reported nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets; the 2013 survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of these budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered is accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

Northside Storage Tunnel provides 500 megalitres (Ml) (130 million gallons) of storage capacity to capture stormwater/sewage overflows into Sydney Harbour. The6.6 m diameter TBM driven tunnel traverses Middle Harbour 85 m (280 ft) below sea level and through a sandstone/shale rock mass, highly disturbed by stress relief, 20 m(65 ft) beneath the base of the sediment filled palaeochannel. Target limits for inflow, groundwater drawdown and settlement of the valley beaches were achieved by systematic forward grouting from the TBM. Support included rockbolts, sets and shotcrete to carry rock loads, control block instability and spalling and to provide durability and serviceability. This paper describes the tunnelling and grouting works and their effectiveness.

El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

Value added is a loosely used qualifier in the industrial minerals industry. What exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product? More importantly, how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. This is misleading, though, because producing value-added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases, firms that make value-added products are not very profitable. It is important not only to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when looking at value-added opportunities, producers must understand how to obtain the value added and how to maintain that value. Four major factors limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper examines these factors. It uses the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problems in soft ground tunneling. During tunnel construction, the need to manually break and remove boulders as obstructions causes delays to the project. Repairs to a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can also be a source of delays. Managing these problems is difficult since normal soil investigation techniques do not accurately predict the presence or frequency of boulders. This has lead to considerable number of claims for extra costs and delays during the construction of soft ground tunneling projects. These issues are exacerbated in pressurized face tunneling systems where there is limited access to the TBM cutterhead for obstruction removal and/or cutterhead maintenance. The project team that built the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor (BWARI) Project for the City of Columbus successfully managed the design and construction of a 4,267 mm (14 ft) diameter soft ground tunnel with high boulder concentrations in a complex geologic setting. The management of the boulder issue tookplace during several phases of the project.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

INTRODUCTION Gas hydrates have considerable potential to be a major energy resource owing to their apparent abundance in Arctic regions and along continental margins throughout the world (Kvenvolden, 1988). Yet, the oil and gas industry has been slow to pursue this opportunity. The primary reasons for this are the large conventional reserve base for natural gas worldwide and the perception that gas hydrate will not be a viable resource for another twenty or thirty years. Gas hydrates are thus viewed as a potential resource for the distant future, but not a valid investment for the near term. This paper addresses both global gas markets and gas hydrate technology, and shows that the commercial development of gas hydrate could proceed rapidly enough to constitute a near-term energy resource. GLOBAL GAS MARKETS The proven worldwide reserves of conventional natural gas are truly enormous, totaling over 6,000 TCF according to BP (2004). Moreover, those reserves have nearly doubled during the past two decades and now represent 67 years of consumption at the current production rates of 80 TCF per year (Fig. 1). This reserve increase has occurred even as global production of natural gas has increased by 67% during the same two decades (Fig. 2). While declining conventional gas reserves are a concern in North America, especially in regions where established infrastructure exists to bring gas to consumers, large new discoveries continue to be made elsewhere in the world. Indeed, in many parts of the world (such as the Middle East and parts of West Africa), natural gas has been regarded as an essentially worthless byproduct of oil production or exists in stranded gas fields. Given this situation, pursuing unconventional gas resources that are inherently riskier exploration targets and more expensive to produce would appear to have little rationale from a business standpoint.

Based on the relationships between severity measure vs. productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of US underground coal mine injuries in 1996 by mine size. From the 1996 data, it was concluded that, generally, the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour) but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). However, within very large, large and medium mines, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r = -0.43, - 0.36 and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a deeply nested analysis would be required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

The understanding of coal mine roof lithology is a critical component in the determination of engineering solutions for roof control. Coreholes were the first technology available to determine lithology of the roof in reserve areas, but coreholes are typically drilled 500–2,500 ft apart due to their cost and sometimes reach more than $125,000 dollars per hole, depending on mine conditions. The next method developed to bridge this gap was the fiber-optic scope which is utilized in the roof at the faces of underground development. High-end fiber-optic scopes can also be costly (20,000–40,000 dollars) but are more affordable than drilling a corehole, and the information can be processed immediately to make quick roof support determinations. The fiberscope can be operated wherever a roof bolter can drill a hole, and there are no restrictions related to property owners, proximity to streams, elevation changes, etc. The latest borescoping method utilized by mining companies is the use of videoscopes. Videoscopes and all borescopes in general are limited by the lengths of the scope and the length of the borehole drilled in the mine. Videoscopes have the advantage of being able to record video while examining the roof lithology. The information can be recorded quickly underground and then be examined on the surface which allows anyone to capture the video so that a geologist can make lithology descriptions without ever going underground. In the past, videoscopes had limited resolution, a short battery life, were fragile and were relatively costly. As technology progresses, videoscopes have become more affordable, have increased battery life, and offer enhanced 1080p resolution. With the broader availability of affordable videoscopes, videoscopes can be more readily used in various mine environments at every active section underground. This paper will discuss the types of videoscopes available, the features that will aid in lithology description/identification, the deployment methods pertaining to supplemental roof support recommendations, and an advanced methodology to enhance accuracy in understanding roof lithology.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

A discussion of frequently asked questions may help individuals trying to interpret subsidence regulations or prepare permit applications. The subsidence permitting process involves just one part of the mass of Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act regulations. But of the 18 main SMCRA sections, subsidence is critical to the permitting process for coal operators. It's an area in which applicants have had problems interpreting regulations and preparing permit applications. Of 22 western states, only Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and Utah heave thus far received approval for their mining and reclamation plans. The other states are now involved in the permit application process and will be dealing with SMCRA regulations for the next year or so. Some state programs, when approved, may differ substantially from the federal SMCRA program. But, to be approved, the state programs must be deemed equal to or more stringent than the federal regulations. SMCRA regulations apply to any coal operation "that exhibits surface effects." Thus they apply to surface strip mines as well as underground coal operations. The regulations do not apply to hardrock mining operations. Since August 3, 1977, the government, industry, and the public have wrestled with SMCRA. They have struggled through an initial program with the US Geological Survey; a new agency, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM); an interim program; and a "final" permanent regulatory program. Even now, OSM is reluctant to publish formal program guidelines because: •The regulations are still in the process of judicial review. • Some approvable state programs will supersede the federal regula¬tions. • The flexible regulations are open to interpretation, which is desir¬able to maintain. •Guidelines could be misleading until regulations and interpretations are revised and finalized.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

A case study is provided that highlights the successful use of high efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) adapted from the oil and gas industry for a large scale, open pit mine dewatering operation. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito Mine, Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit development areas in Zacatecas, Mexico. At the time of publication (July 2012), there were 18 vertical bedrock dewatering wells producing an average flow rate of 350 liters per second (lps) from the Peñasco and Chile Colorado development areas. Average pumping rate per well was 18 lps, with a maximum of 44 lps. The depth of wells varies from 330 m to 500m, and includes both in-pit and perimeter (ex-pit) pumping centers. A network of 50 piezometers was used to monitor the response of groundwater levels to pumping. Since dewatering operations were initiated in 2007, groundwater elevations decreased overall, from approximately 1950 m above sea level (masl) to around 1625 masl, for a total of 340 m of drawdown. The pit floor elevation was approximately 1655 masl. All of the producing wells were constructed with 16-inch boreholes, completed with 10-inch diameter blank casing and louvered screen sections and equipped with ESPs. The application of ESPs has proven to be highly effective in the case of Peñasquito?s dewatering operations. Noted advantages include the following: ? Small diameter pump allows use of smaller diameter boreholes (16 inches) and casing / screens (10 inches) reducing well drilling and construction costs ? Greater application range for flow rate and total dynamic head ? Variable speed drive systems for greater energy efficiency and flow rate optimization ? Integration of downhole instrumentation into the motor and pump assembly The advantages and benefits of using high efficiency ESPs revolutionized the dewatering program at Peñasquito open pit mine as evidenced by the number of deep vertical well installations and high dewatering flow rates and total dynamic head requirements.
