Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing a process for removing metals from mining and mineral processing waste streams by precipitation. The precipitation process is accelerated by flocculation when a high molecular weight polymer is added. Infrared (IR) studies were performed on zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH);J, copper hydroxide [Cu(OH);J, and zinc sulfide (ZnS) flocculated with both non ionic and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The IR data were compared with general trends in the performance of the polymers observed during flocculation. These studies will help to understand the bonding between the precipitate and polymer and indicate the effectiveness of a flocculant for dewatering. Two types of bands showed up on the IR spectra; one type described the interlayer water of the flocs, the other described the organic bonds of the polymers. A general decrease in the areas of the three water bands, hydroxyl (O-H) stretching (3,200-3,500 cm-1), water bending (1,610-1,630 cm-1), and torsional oscillations (600-700 cm-1), indicate interlayer water being driven off, which is a favorable condition in flocculation. Shifts in the O-H stretching band indicate water bridging between the precipitate and polymer. Shifts in the amine (N-H) deformation, carbon-nitrogen (C-N) stretch band (1,600-1,610 cm-1) indicate the amine group of the PAM is involved in the bonding. Evidence suggests that ether oxygen of PEO is also involved in the bonding process.

"The Workman's Compensation Law of Indiana, enacted in 1915, amended in 1917, 1919, 1923, and 1927, and in 1929 named the Indiana Workmen's Compensation Act of 1929, provides for a weekly compensation for disability due to accidents of 55 per cent of the average weekly wage of the employee, to start on the eighth day of disability. Compensation is computed from a maximum and minimum weekly wage of $30 and $16, respectively. Thus, the maximum weekly compensation is $16.50 and the minimum $8.80; the total compensation paid is not to exceed $5,000.In addition to the compensation the employer is required to pay all medical, surgical, hospital, and nurse fees for a period of 30 days and may be required to pay such fees for an additional 30 days at the direction of the Industrial Board of Indiana. In the case of fatalities the employer must contribute $100 toward funeral expenses.The law also stipulates that ""the employer shall keep a record of all injuries, fatal or otherwise, received by his employees in the course of their employment,"" also that the employer shall report within one week of their occurrence all accidents that cause either the death of the employee or the loss of more than one day's work. However, no standard form is furnished or required by the industrial board on which the employer shall keep a record of accidents, neither is he required to report the time of return to work of the injured employee unless the period of disability exceeds seven days and the accident thus becomes compensable. Hence, no record is kept of noncompensable accidents other than the first report sent to the industrial board by the employer.If the employer were required to keep a complete and concise record of all accidents, in duplicate, on a special form either furnished or required by the board, giving all of the essential data in regard to the accidents, and if he were required to submit a copy of this record to the board at the end of the fiscal year, the data thus assembled would not only be of material assistance to the board, particularly in making up its annual report, but would also furnish information of much value in the study of accident causes and what may be done to remove them.Those industries that have made marked progress in reducing accidents keep such records, as it is only through a full knowledge of how accidents occur that intelligent steps can be taken to prevent their recurrence. Unfortunately, the mining industry as a whole in Indiana has not kept pace with many other industries in reducing accidents, and it is urged as an aid to improvement that a thorough and complete record of mining accidents be kept."

"This paper is based data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from some of the principal mine operators in Pennsylvania, in the course of a study conducted in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service, with regard to economies that might be effected in the selection storage, and preparations of timber particularly treatment with preservative to prolong its life.The Pennsylvania anthracite region, considered as a single mining district is by far the largest user of mine timber of any mining district, either coal or metal, in the United States, and the bituminous districts of Pennsylvania rank second. The present annual consumption of mine timber by the coal-mining industry of Pennsylvania probably exceeds 100,000,000 cubic feet annually.In 1919, Pennsylvania produced, in round figures, 145,300,000 tons of bituminous coal, 86,200,000 tons of anthracite, and 5,400,000 tons of iron ores. If it be assumed that the bituminous coal mines required 0.33 cubic feet, anthracite mines 0.7, and iron mines 0.9 cubic feet per ton mined the timber requirements were bituminous. 47,950,000; anthracite, 60,340,000; iron mines, 4,860,000 or a total of over 113,000,000 cubic feet.The average cost of round mine timber in the anthracite region in 1905, was, according to the U. S. Forest Service, 6.6 cents per cubic foot, and $15.00 per 1000 board feet for sawed timber. The present cost Las advanced to 27.5 cents per cubic foot for round timber, delivered to the mine, of which cost 57.4, represents freight charges."

This report describes an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of flotation techniques for the recovery of chromite from fine-grained disseminated ores. Reported work on the concentration of chromiferous materials shows that flotation has been applied almost exclusively to slime-free pulps. Therefore, chromium recoveries that could be obtained by flotation were related to the amount of slime rejected. However, results of recent studies by the Bureau of Mines showed that des liming is not a requisite to selective concentration of chromite. Laboratory-scale tests on seven ore types from the more important chromium-bearing areas of the Pacific Northwest showed flotation to be technically feasible for treatment of all but one of the samples. Concentrate grades were affected more by the composition of the chromite mineral than by the grade or character of the ore. Test results from three of the samples showed that, without prior desliming of the pulp, 78 to 91 percent of the chromium could be recovered in concentrates of 90 percent or more chromite; two samples responded to similar treatment, resulting in concentrates of more than 80 percent chromite with recoveries of 85 and 89 percent chromium. One sample of mill products, subjected to severe weathering, required removal of the primary slime to obtain a concentrate of 65 percent chromite with only 75 percent chromium recovery.

Determine whether the total delay time in blasting may be safely increased beyond the currently permitted 0.5 s, without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere and determine the minimum borehole spacing to avoid misfires. Approach At present, regulations limit the delay time used in short-delay blasting to a total of 0.5 s. Many in industry and government would like to see this total delay time increased to 1 5 to permit an increase in the number of different delays available for short delay blasting and an increase in the time between delay periods. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting coal in underground mines could be safely expanded, with resulting improvements in productivity. The research was conducted at a surface mine in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Experimental shots were conducted in several pits, each of which had a 5-foot-high coal seam (Pitts-burg No.8) in a 50-foot highwall. The coal seam and a mobile gallery provided a good simulation of an underground coal face. The Bureau also examined the relationship between borehole spacing and misfires, to check on reports over the past few years that permissible explosives frequently misfire. These reports were not well documented, but were numerous enough to warrant investigation. Misfires of permissible explosives in an underground coal mine can be very hazardous; a burning cartridge of explosive may be ejected from a borehole and ignite the gas or dust in the mine, or a misfired cartridge in the muck pile may detonate during drilling and mucking operations, causing serious injuries.

The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. The variables to be measured were based on the postulated character¬istics of the loading function, as described in the previous chapter. One class of variables presumed to influence the loading function are geological variables. Accordingly, the sites for data collection were selected in different bituminous coal seams at dispersed locations in order that variation in geological conditions would exist. Seven mines in central and western Pennsylvania and one mine in northern West Virginia were selected as data collection sites. Five different coal seams were represented by these mines. The remaining classes of variables - geometric, mechanical, and procedural - were measured as they occurred in the mines. A description of the measurements, and the conversion of these measurements to forms which could be-analyzed for effect on the loading function is given. Mining Dimensions At the underground working face, the following dimensions were measured: a. Thickness of coal excavated. b. Thickness of shale excavated. c. Total height excavated. d. Determine the extent of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTD's) in the U.S. mining industry. Background UECTD's are injuries that develop gradually over a period of time as a result of repeated stress to a particular body part without adequate time between stresses for full recovery to occur. The stresses that contribute to UECTD's may occur because of the following work components: awkward position of wrist or arm, excessive manual force, high repetitions of manual movement and effort, cold environment, and vibration. Cumulative trauma injuries to the arm and hand have become an ever growing concern among safety and health professionals in a number of different industries and work settings, such as meatpacking operations, assembly-line work, and keyboarding. Mine workers arc also exposed to a combination of stressors and work design deficiencies that result in arm and hand injuries. For example, certain job tasks and environments, such as that of an underground jackleg driller, expose miners to segmental (hand-arm) vibration and cold temperatures. Operators of underground mobile equipment, such as scoops and trams, regularly have their hands in direct contact with vibrating levers and controls.

During the period of 10 years from January 1, 1908, to January 1, 1918, approximately 12,850,000 barrels of oil and 5,024,506,000 cubic feet of gas were destroyed by fire in the United States, entailing a total estimated property loss of $25,254,200. During this period 503 fires were reported. As is shown in Plates I and II, 310 of these fires were caused by lightning and 193 by all other causes. The losses from the fires caused by lightning were estimated to be $11, 148,000, and from those due to all other causes $14,106,200. Directly and indirectly, the fires resulted in the deaths of nearly 150 persons and were responsible for almost as many more being permanently disabled. For the past three years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting investigations to determine the nature and the specific causes of these fires, with a view to suggesting means whereby they may be suc- cessfully combatted and, in some places, perhaps eliminated entirely. As the subject of oil and gas fires is necessarily broad, no attempt is made in this bulletin to treat it exhaustively; rather the bulletin aims to point out what has been done by operators in the past, and to describe various fire-prevention methods and fire-fighting appa- ratus which are being used or adopted by many of the larger oil companies. These methods and apparatus, it is believed, if uni- versally employed by operators, will largely decrease the present enormous annual losses. In the discussion of oil-well fires, the methods used in extinguishing several of the larger and more perplexing ones are described. As the right procedure for extinguishing any oil-well fire must be de- termined largely by local conditions, it is not probable that all of the methods used at some one fire, as described, will be applicable to a future fire. However, the operator, from these descriptions, may at least gain suggestions that will greatly assist him in fighting similar fires.

Relative enthalpies of cuprous iodide (CuI) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpy measurements between 298.15 and 1,396.3 K were made with a copper-block drop calorimeter. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Reversible transitions were determined at 643 K with a standard enthalpy of transition [(6Htr)] = 0.74 kca1/mol, at 679 K with a [6Htr = 0.65 kca1/mo1, and at 868 K] with a standard enthalpy of fusion [(6H~) = 1.895 kca1/mol.] Tabulated values are listed at selected temperature increments from 298.15 to 1,600 K for the standard relative enthalpy (HO -H298), heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)!T]. The enthalpy data are also given in the form of equations and combined with thermodynamic data from other investigations to derive values of standard entha1pies of formation [(~HfO)], Gibbs energies of formation [(6GfO)], and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation (log Kf).

"An investigation has been made of the applicability to a variety of coals, other than those from Illinois, of the Powell and Parr method of analysis for the forms of sulphur in coal.A complete study was made of the sulphur in the following coals:- Upper Freeport, Pa.; Pittsburgh seam, Pa.; Pocahontas No. 3, W, Va..; Letcher Co., Ky.; Morgan Co., Tenn.; and Cherokee Co., Kan.The method of analysis gave excellent results when applied to these coals. In the determination of pyrite, the iron-sulphur ratio checked in every case with the theoretical. After the extraction of the pyrite and sulphates, the remaining sulphur was proved to be organic in nature.This work indicated that sulphur exists in coal in three typical forms: - pyrite or marcasite, sulphates, and organic sulphur. A study of the changes which these forms undergo during coking has been made on a variety of coals, and the following five classes of reactions established.First. Complete decomposition of the pyrite and marcasite to ferrous sulphide, pyrrhotite, and hydrogen sulphide. This reaction begins at 300°C., is complete at 600 °C., and generally reaches its maximum between 400 and 500°C."

The human factors group at the NIOSH-Pittsburg Research Center has investigated the use of viscoelastic foam to reduce shock for the equipment operator and improve seats on mine shuttle cars.

This paper presents several case studies in which a mechanics-based boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, which incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general-purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin-seam or vein-type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from this work show that the LAMODEL program is not as accurate as available empirical subsidence-predictive methods: the expected correlation between the geology and the optimum input parameters is not evident. However, for a mechanics-based program, LAMODEL does provide moderately accurate subsidence calculations, and it is one of a few programs that can even attempt to practically calculate both underground stress and convergence and the resulting surface subsidence.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to evaluate the potential for ground water contamination by mine waste used as backfill. Samples of cemented waste backfill and water discharging from drillholes and seeps were collected to use in chemical analyses and laboratory tests to determine the physical and chemical factors that control release of heavy metals to ground water. Greater water retention by cemented backfill (as compared to uncemented sandfill) reduces the surface are aexposed to oxidation, which in turn reduces the amount of acid produced. The acid is neutralized by the cement and minerals contained in the backfill. The grain-size distribution of tailings used for backfill affects the structural integrity of cemented backfill under attack by acidic water; breakdown of the backfill structure releases neutralizing materials faster. Backfilled stopes in rock with low hydraulic conductivities will constitute preferential flow paths after mine flooding; however, the rate of flow through backfill will be much slower than when the stope is partially saturated during mine operation. Considering all factors, acid generation and release of metal ions from cemented backfill should be less than in uncemented sandfill.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a gas chromatographic method for the rapid and accurate determination of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and, if present, carbon monoxide in mine air. This method replaces such presently used gas-reaction types as the Haldane or Orsat analysis, offering advantages in terms of precision, accuracy, speed, and convenience.

Artisans and laborers in mineral industries where the air is dusty with particles of reel: are subject to a peculiar pulmonary disease known as miners' phthisis or stone cutters' consumption. In granite cutters the disease is specifically designated as granite pneumoconiosis. Very fine particles of the harder rocks are especially injurious when inhaled into the lungs. It is estimated particles about one micron (1/23000 part of an inch in diameter) are most injurious, because larger particles are more readily removed by the cilia and,wet surfaces of the respiratory passages before reaching the lungs, while smaller particles either do not readily lodge or are more easily eliminated. Silica, of which quartz and flint are composed, and which forms a large part of granite, is one of the hardest of the common rock-forming materials. It is also very insoluble when silica lodges in the lungs elimination is difficult. Rock constituents of granite other than silica are probably injurious but in a lesser degree, and this is also probably true of limestone and the softer rocks. Ultimately a worker who daily inhales much granite dust has considerable deposited in his lungs. If he continues at his trade the lung tissue becomes harder and less elastic, he finds himself short winded, and in extreme cases death may come either directly or indirectly as a result of lung failure.

"Introduction.Southern Illinois and Kentucky are credited with approximately 90% of the fluorspar production of the United States. A small amount of high-grade acid, spar is obtained from the ore by band sorting; the greater part, however, is recovered by jigs and tables as gravel spar containing approximately 85% calcium fluoride. In the jigging and tabling operations, galena is recovered, and enough silica and calcite are removed to raise the calcium fluoride content of the gravel spar to 85%. However, the removal of silica and calcite results in a large loss of spar. With increasing depth in the mines, zinc sulphide, sphalerite, is encountered in increasing quantity and the removal of this has become a serious problem. While the sphalerite can be fairly well removed from the spar by present milling methods, a marketable zinc concentrate can not be made. The experiments described below were made on fluorspar ore from Southern Illinois, by the mining experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at Rolla, Mo., in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.The ore tested contained. 7.3% lead, 27.9% zinc, 35.7% calcium fluoride, 9.5% silica and 4.7%. calcite.Tests and Results. In some preliminary tests it was noticed that a portion of the finely crushed ore adhered strongly to the sample pans, and upon investigation it was found that the adhering material was practically clean spar. By utilizing this property of adhesion 46.8% of the spar was recovered as a product containing 98.3% calcium fluoride. This suggested the possibility of using electrostatic separation."
