THIS is a summary of the available limit of flammability, autoignition, and burning-rate data for more than 200 combustible gases and vapors in air and other oxidants, as well as of empirical rules and graphs that can be used to predict similar data for thousands of other combustibles under a variety of environmental conditions. Specific data are presented on the paraffinic, unsaturated, aromatic, and alicyclic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur compounds, and an assortment of fuels, fuel blends, hydraulic fluids, engine oils, and miscellaneous combustible gases and vapors.

"INTRODUCTION Iron ore containing titanium was first used in blast furnaces over a century ago. It is well known that TiO2 is a slag-forming material that will increase the amount of slag produced by the usual gangue materials, silica and alumina. Increase in the volume of slag due to the presence of TiO2 and a lack of information concerning its effect on the properties of the slag have prevented the general use of titaniferous ore. Also rather com¬mon belief among furnace operators that the bottom of the furnace builds up when ores containing TiO2 are smelted has militated against the use of titaniferous ore. This building up of the hearth has been attributed to the formation of copper-colored crystals of titanium cyanonitride, which have been observed in the salamanders of blast furnaces. Until recently the availability of nontitaniferous iron ore has left little incentive to use ore containing titanium.The presence of vanadium in certain deposits of titaniferous magnetite in New York State has created new interest in problems connected with the use of titanium-bearing ore. It appears that most of the vanadium in this ore can be recovered in pig iron, which can be blown in a converter to produce a slag containing vanadium in amounts suitable for the production of ferrovanadium.The Titanium Division of the National Lead Co. recently erected a largo mill to treat ore from Sanford Hill, in Essex County, New York, about 50 miles west of Port Henry. The ore deposit was acquired from the MacIntyre Iron Co. and is often referred to as Sanford ore. It is one of the largest deposits of Iron-bearing material to be found east of the Lake Superior region and is being mined by open-pit methods."

This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining, Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Since 1910 the Bureau of Mines has given training in the care and use of oxygen breathing apparatus under conditions that may exist during mine fires and after mine explosions. In 1929 the Bureau supplemented this instruction by initiating a course in advanced mine rescue training to prepare mine officials and others to organize men for mine rescue and recovery operations. The course of instruction has been developed and expanded since its inception to keep abreast with new ideas, methods, and equipment. Four miners' circulars were issued to be used in the training course. The first of this series (Miners' Circular 33) deals with mine gases and the various methods of detecting them; the second (Miners' Circular 34) gives instructions for sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres; the third (this circular) describes methods and equipment for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in conducting recovery operations, These circulars have been revised from time to time to keep them up to date.

This report is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325, as amended), which require that: "The Secretary of the Interior shall render to Congress on or before the first day of January of each year a report on all operations under this Act." Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. A mineral survey by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey indicate the Blanco Mountain RARE II area has low potential. Lode deposits consist of small, mineralized quartz or quartz-gossan veins. The veins are sparse and widely separated and lead, silver and gold content is restricted in amount and concentration. No gold or other potentially economic minerals were found in a placer deposit. There is no evidence of industrial mineral, geothermal, or energy resource potential in the study area. INTRODUCTION A mineral resource survey of the Blanco Mountain RARE II area (No. 5059), Inyo and Mono Counties, California was conducted in July 1981. This report summarizes the results and interpretations of the Bureau of Mines investigation.

A technical and economic evaluation of the potential for improving mining productivity through the use of underreamers in blastholes, specifically in relation to Minnesota taconite, Arizona surface copper and in situ mining operations is presented. Included are (1) a review of the drilling and blasting practices presently being used, (2) a discussion of current underreamer technology. (3) the presentation of a general economic cost model for underreaming, (4) the application of the model to surface taconite, surface copper and in situ mining, and (5) a summary discussion including required performance specifications, potential overall benefits, and recommendations for further development.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

This report presents the results of laboratory and continuous mill-beneficiation tests conducted at the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electra Development laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on nonsulfide lead ore from the Sherman mine, Leland district, near Burke, Idaho. The predominant lead-bearing mineral in the ore sample treated was pyromorphite, a minor ore mineral of lead. Known reserves of pyromorphite lead ore in the United States are limited, although an appreciable tonnage of this type of ore is found in the Sherman mine. Very little pyromorphite is being mined in this mine or in the United States. This beneficiation problem presented a unique opportunity to study the mineral-dressing properties of a less widely known lead mineral, and consequently adds valuable knowledge to the ways of beneficiating ores containing nonsulfide lead values. This mineral-dressing problem was successful with conventional concentration methods of flotation and Gravity separation.

The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

Great Britain has never had a basic raining law such as is in force in most foreign countries. This lack may be due to the fact that, with the exception of gold and silver, all metals or minerals belong to the owner of the surface land. Even with respect to the precious metals, gold and silver, which are not abundant in Great Britain, the right of the Crown, though still technically acknowledged, is not always insisted unon. All other metals and minerals are vested in the ground landlord, who may sell, lease, or other¬ wise convey them. The State has little to do with the mining industry except in. regulatory and judicial matters. The Government must settle controversies and provide for easements, rights of way for railroads, roads, and canals, or, in general, effect the same control that it exercises over other industries. As mining was carried on in very early times in England, of necessity a certain legal procedure came into existence, which in effect was little more than a private contract between the owner of the mineral (whether an individual or the State) and the miner. The nature of such contracts, of course, has changed radically with the changed relations between classes, as England lias developed from the feudal into the modern State. From the medley of ancient procedure and custom, a concession system of mining in^its simplest form lias evolved. Of the earlier conditions. Van Wagenen says

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

[Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has promoted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believe would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units. The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendations are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many ether problems will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the cost earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.]

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 1,070 Bcf as of January 1, 1985. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 280 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 243 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 287 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, which makes up the remaining 260 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting, non-depleting, and stored classifications. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 900 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gasfields, are estimated to total 133 Bcf. There is 37 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gas Field near Amarillo, TX.

The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. .An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal lead to the conclusion that study of the technical considerations, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem . Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude 1n certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement w s made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

1. The Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning beds are the most important beds in Clearfield County, Pa., from the standpoint of production. The Lower Kittanning bed has the largest remaining recoverable reserves of any of the beds in the county. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,909 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 1,177 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

Fires in anthracite refuse banks are troublesome and may become exceedingly costly to combat. Instances are known in which refuse-bank fires have grown to such magnitude that entire mining properties have been endangered. In one instance4/ a refuse-bank fire cost the mine management several hundred thousand dollars to extinguish. The exact number of fires formerly existing or now active in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania is not known. There are hundreds of anthracite refuse banks in this region, some very high and large in area, that have never caught firs, although a few are over 50 years old. This would indicate that spontaneous ignition of the material in these banks is improbable, a conclusion confirmed by recent laboratory research.
