"New developments are required day by day. On the one hand site to improve the actual situation, on the other hand site to create the future and to ensure that future demands can be fulfilled. This requires for instance the development of technical support systems, which enable a more constant and quality ensured installation of special foundation products like piles. As part of the quality control, real time installation control of the production process, data transfer and reporting systems become more and more important ensuring the five dimensions of a jobsite. That means not only the three well known dimensions (width, height, depth) are cover, but also the dimension of time and money. Beside small, but important, details, also the demand of extending the use of methodologies in terms of getting deeper or allow their use in various soil conditions require the development of new tools and equipment. Therefore, the paper will describe some of these new approaches and activities required for these new developments. It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONNew developments are required day by day. In a second part the focus will be given to new approaches for soil mixing application. "INTRODUCTIONThe Playa Vista Development is the largest urban infill development in the history of the United States. Overall, it encompasses about 1100 acres in the City of Los Angeles and is situated north of Los Angeles International Airport near the Pacific Ocean. The development taking place on the project consists primarily of high-density residential condominiums with 1 to 2 levels of subterranean parking . The geotechnical conditions are typified by high groundwater, soft clays, and liquefaction, in addition to environmental issues such as methane.Due to a combination of the geotechnical factors and noise restrictions, both driven and drilled piles were not feasible once the initial phase of the project was occupied. As a result, the project developer undertook a testing program that consisted of the installation and load testing of 9 piles in order to obtain City of Los Angeles acceptance of a pile installation system that met the site constraints. The testing program was divided between two separate contractors operating on sites set on opposite sides on the street (Figure 1 ). Contractors working in Test Areas A & B employed the ""dry dip"" and ""wet dip"" methods of auger pressure grouted displacement (APGD) pile installation, respectively.This paper summarizes the extraordinary program undertaken to install, document, test, and examine auger pressure grouted displacement piles at this site. The program ultimately resulted in City acceptance of auger pressure grouted displacement piles, a historically difficult challenge given the City's resistance of acceptance of ""new"" technologies.A summary of elements included in the test program are: (1) quality control; (2) load testing; (3) long-term testing; (4) non-destructive testing; and (5) pile exhumation."

The Howland Hook Terminal Facility located in Staten Island, New York is one of the most active container terminals in the Northeast United States. Due to the high capacity of the facility, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) recently acquired the adjacent 37-acre Port Ivory Facility. Expansion of this Site facilitates the additional transfer of goods for rail transport, where formerly the facility was solely highway transport. Upon completion, the facility will have the ability to transfer containers directly to a freight rail line onsite by crossing from Howland Hook Site to the Port Ivory Site via a proposed bridge over Bridge Creek. The geology of the Port Ivory Site consists of shallow glacial deposits left by the leading edge of the last advance of the Wisconsin Glacier. Glacial and marine action over the millennia and the modifications of past construction combined to form a challenging site geologically. Prior to the PANYNJ acquiring the site, the Port Ivory Facility was occupied by Proctor and Gamble for nearly 100 years. Over the course of time, the site has had a variety of structures constructed and demolished at the site. The earliest structures were often supported on shallow foundations and the foundation types used progressed over the years transitioning from low capacity timber piles to various new pile types as they became available; such as Raymond tapered piles, steel piles with concrete cores, precast piles and cast in place foundations. Currently, we are designing 4-foot diameter high capacity drilled shafts to support a new bridge over Bridge Creek to connect the two sites. Drilled shafts proved to be a very economical solution from both a design and construction point of view to carry the axial load of the bridge of approximately 400 tons per shaft. The paper will present a historical evolution of the progress of deep foundation types used at the Port Ivory Site; from low capacity timber piles to high capacity large diameter drilled shafts. The paper will also present changes and modifications of geotechnical design criteria over time that affects the type of deep foundations used. For instance, utilizing new seismic design criteria requires selecting a deep foundation system that withstands seismic loading conditions and overcomes the effects of liquefaction.

"INTRODUCTIONThe new $650 million power block at Santee Cooper’s Cross Generating Station in Cross, South Carolina is being constructed on driven pre-stressed concrete (PSC) piles. S&ME, as geotechnical subconsultant to Parsons Energy and Chemical Group, was responsible for pile analysis and design to meet the site’s geotechnical and seismic challenges. Selection, analysis and design of the PSC piles included consideration of the following:• Column and equipment support loads ranging up to 500 to 1000 kips (2224 to 4448 kN).• Incorporation of the 2000 International Building Code seismic provisions.• A thick upper soft clay and loose, liquefiable sand.• Potential for karst-related features in the calcareous Santee Limestone.GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATIONThe near-surface site geology consists of (in order of increasing depth): (1) Pleistocene sediments, (2) the Santee Limestone (considered part of the Orangeburg Group) of Eocene age, and (3) the Black Mingo Formation of the Eocene/Paleocene age (refer to the shear-wave profile in Figure 4). Pleistocene clays and silts are generally soft and will settle significantly if subjected to loading by heavy grade-supported structures while the interbedded sands are generally loose. Where submerged below the shallow groundwater table, the sands were determined to be liquefiable during a strong earthquake.The Santee Limestone is a nearly white to yellow fossiliferous and partly glauconitic rock consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate. Observations of the rock core samples from the site indicate that it can range from hard crystalline limestone (primarily in thin layers) to a lightly cemented sand. In terms of rock strength, the Santee Limestone is generally very soft to soft, depending on the cementation and other depositional characteristics."

Evaluating surface and subsurface conditions for marine foundations (bridges, causeways, terminals, etc.) is often done with a limited amount of data. Subsurface information for these projects is primarily acquired using traditional methods, such as boreholes, test pits or divers, which tend to be expensive and limited in the area of coverage. A number of geophysical methods, including precision bathymetry, sidescan sonar, and seismic reflection or subbottom profiling are extremely cost-effective and obtain significantly more data than can be acquired using traditional intrusive methods. These geophysical methods provide detailed surface images and continuous profiles of the subsurface stratigraphy. This information can be invaluable for selecting the best location for geotechnical boreholes and to map potential geohazards such as submarine slides and filled or open scour holes. Offshore investigations conducted for a proposed highway bridge (Knik Arm Bridge, Cook Inlet, AK), the retrofit of two existing bridge (Antioch and Dumbarton Bridges, CA) and a proposed cruise ship terminal (Ketchikan, AK) used a combination of geophysical methods to map water depth, detect and map debris on the seabed, map the thickness of unconsolidated sediment, determine the depth to bedrock and identify potential geohazards such as scour holes. The results of the geophysical investigations will be used to select locations for obtaining geotechnical borings, to extrapolate geologic information between existing or proposed boreholes, evaluate the potential depth of scour and design a pile support pier. Geotechnical engineers, offshore contractors and bridge designers are realizing the importance of the early use of offshore geophysics for (i) site characterization, (ii) to reduce the uncertainty of geotechnical conditions thus avoiding designs that may be overly conservative and thus more expensive and (iii) to assist in selecting locations for geotechnical borings.

On the site of building of a new flyover founded on piles the comprehensive "in situ" investigations were carried out. The subsoil conditions under each of 15 supports were very differentiated. Using of the static sounding results a new method for evaluation of bearing capacity and settlement of piles was proposed. The method is based on a special construction of the curve of load-settlement relationship. The verification of this method was made on the basis of loading of piles.

The Ohio Department of Transpor- tation's (ODOT's) $228 million 1-480 Valley View Bridge project was needed to keep traffic flowing on one of the state's busiest freeway segments. Deterioration from age and steady high- traffic volumes necessitated the replacement of the existing decks of the I-480 east- and west-bound bridges over the Cuyahoga River Valley in suburban Cleveland. To facilitate this work without creating tremendous backups and traffic delays due to long-term lane closures, the project included design and construction of a new four-lane bridge in the median gap between the existing 1-480 bridges. Now complete, the new center bridge allows for all four lanes of I-480 to be maintained in each direction while deck replacement and other repairs are made to the existing bridges, while also providing increased capacity after project completion. ODOT awarded the project to the Walsh Design-Build Team (DBT) in late 2017. This article describes how the Walsh DBT, with Jacobs Engineering as the DBT lead design firm, incor- porated an innovative approach to the design and construction of the driven pile foundations for the new I-480 center bridge. I-480 crosses approximately 200 ft (60.9 m) above the Cuyahoga River Valley. With an overall length of 4,150 ft (1,265 m) and spans ranging from 180 to 300 ft (54.8 to 91.4 m), the design and construction of the foundations for the new center bridge were critical to the success of the project. Due to their overall height and span lengths, the foundation loads for a typical pier consisted of a factored vertical load of 22,000 kips, (100 MN) plus significant overturning forces due to horizontal loads and thermal effects.

Today's civil and geotechnical engineers play an important role in helping to achieve sustainable infrastructure. To address environmental sustainability and climate change caused by green- house gas (GHG) emissions, all engi- neers must adjust their traditional approach to materials, design and construction practices to include a focus on minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. The considerable influence that geotechnical engineers have on projects provides an important oppor- tunity to affect positive change. The carbon footprint of the construction methods and materials used for foun- dations can be as much as 8-9% of a new building's total carbon footprint, and geotechnical engineers have an op- portunity to evaluate alternatives based not only on cost, but also the long-term environmental impacts. Growing environmental considerations and societal concerns are influencing the selection of construction materials and methods, including cement and concrete's role and significance for infrastructure applications today and in the future.

New underground floors comprising the complete footprint area of the building structure, were constructed under an existing building in sand, located in the Verdun district of Beirut / Lebanon. The works for the rehabilitation and extension of the Verdun 528 building were carried out between December 1999 and August 2000. A restriction of differential vertical movement of existing load bearing walls and columns had to be respected throughout the construction phase of the new basements. Support measures for the building were taken based on a underpinning system with Bauer SVV preloaded micropiles. The specialty of this underpinning job was that the building loads at the time of preloading and excavation of new basements was substantially less than at final stage. The design of the preloading system was particularly challenging in view of the transition from temporary to final load transfer under variable load conditions. Load transfer was based on the Bauer SVV micropile head system applied in several technical variants. Monitoring of levels of structural elements performed throughout the construction works confirmed that the differential movements of adjacent load bearing columns and walls were maintained within the specified limits.

The construction industry can and needs to contribute to a more sustainable world. Accordingly, geotechnical works potentially have a significant share. In this context, Bauer understands “sustainable products for geotechnical works” as those that may cause less emissions and increase the sustainability of construction activities. In order to structure the efforts and systematically pursue sustainable targets in the construction sector, and in the specialist foundation industry, the “17 sustainability goals” presented by the United Nations in their AGENDA 2030, can be used for general guidance and for continuous improvement. Benchmarks for relevant economic and social objectives, mainly with environmental aspects, are inevitable. The key parameter to sustainable products for geotechnical works in the focus of this paper is the optimisation of processes on site needed to fulfill the client’s building task, including the selection of technologies and construction methods with minimum environmental impact and minimum carbon footprint.

"Constructions activities in cities often imply large volumes of surplus material which could be treated by stabilization for re-use in new geotechnical constructions. Modification of dredged sediments by e.g. stabilization/solidification (s/s) is an example of sustainable handling option implying dredged contaminated sediments to become a potential resource for civil engineering constructions. The SMOCS project (Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 has developed a guideline based on a sustainability approach free to download at www.smocs.eu. The paper presents key issues in the guideline and highlights the importance of performing a field test as part of the design process. Two field tests with s/s-treated dredged sediments for new port areas are presented. Strength, permeability and leakage properties of s/s-treated contaminated sediments make beneficial use in geo-constructions possible. The influence of possible physical/chemical deterioration processes on the durability has been studied showing that freeze/thaw cycles might degrade the monolith of s/s-treated sediments. Consequently s/s-constructions shall be below freezing depth. Other deterioration processes such as salt and sulfate penetration were found of minor importance. Research is on-going to study the influence of and how to cope with freeze/thaw cycles on the long-term properties.BACKGROUNDConstructions activities in cities often imply large volumes of surplus material which could be treated by stabilization for re-use in new geotechnical constructions. The PHX Sky Train is an automated people mover system located at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Phase II of the PHX Sky Train includes the design of over 150 drilled shafts for support of four guideway abutments, 75 guideway piers and three proposed stations. The soil conditions in this area generally consist of alluvial Sand, Gravel and Cobbles (locally known as SGC) deposited by the nearby Salt River. The foundation system will support relatively high axial loads, lateral loads and moments due to the height of the elevated guideway above the ground surface, where it needs to pass over roadways, parking lots, an existing terminal, and other buildings. Deep foundation design involves designing drilled shafts within the SGC deposits, some of which extend below the long-term groundwater table. Such extreme design loading conditions, together with difficult ground conditions at the site, result in several challenges for the design and construction of the deep foundation system for the project. This paper will present the results of a drilled shaft load test program implemented to provide site-specific measurement of the axial and lateral performance of the project drilled shafts. The load testing program consisted of a bi-directional load cell axial load test and a lateral load test performed on an instrumented test shaft 84 inches in diameter. The development and execution of the load test program and analysis of the test results are discussed. Comparisons were developed between predicted load capacities of drilled shafts using different design methodologies and the load capacity measured from the load tests. The load test results showed that underestimation of the capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The load testing program was important for verifying the performance of the drilled shaft foundations on the project and was used to reduce the size of the drilled shafts. INTRODUCTION The PHX Sky Train is a five-mile long automated people mover system situated at-grade and on an elevated guideway which connects terminals, parking facilities, a rental car center and the Valley Metro Light Rail system in Phoenix. The purpose of this automated train system is to provide a secondary transportation system within the airport to relieve roadway congestion, minimize wait times and travel times for passengers and provide climate-controlled waiting areas. Phase 1 opened to the public on April 8, 2013. Phase 1A opened on December 8, 2014.

Driving piles in under water applications has become more common place over the past twenty years. Where only a water depth reachable with a follower or dewatered cofferdam was the rule in the past, newer technologies developed for the offshore oil and gas industry have made depths of even several thousand feet possible offering new possibilities in foundation design and installation. With the new technology, engineers can now more efficiently design structures by placing foundations optimally thereby reducing weight and cost of the overall structure.

"Poor drainage is a common cause of poor performance of earth retention systems, resulting in burdensome serviceability problems that can progress to outright failure of the retention system if not addressed. A drainage system consisting of filtered conical drains that can be installed through the face of an existing retaining wall and readily maintained was evaluated through tests of physical and numerical models. The physical models were constructed with different backfill materials in a container measuring 8 ft wide by 4 ft tall by 15 ft long. Tests were conducted by saturating the backfill under a constant water elevation atop the model, and then maintaining the water elevation until seepage from the drains reached a steady state condition. Pore pressures within the backfill and outflow from the drains were measured to facilitate calibration of numerical models that accompany the physical models. Results from the calibrated finite element models were used to develop design criteria for the drains. The design criteria establish the required drain spacing as a function of the height of groundwater above the drains and the diameter of the drain.INTRODUCTIONMany retaining wall performance problems are a result of poor drainage of the wall backfill. Consequences of poorly drained backfill include displacement and rotation of the wall face, including the extreme case of collapse, and seepage through the face of the wall, which is in turn associated with damage from corrosion, dry rot, and other forms of deterioration. A common approach to improve drainage of an existing wall is the installation of drainage features (e.g. “weep holes”) in the face of the retaining wall. Weep holes facilitate controlled seepage through the face, which relieves water pressure within the backfill and directs seepage to known locations in the wall face. Although installation of weep holes is relatively common, engineering methodologies for selecting the size (diameter) and spacing (along the wall) of facial drainage features are uncommon if not altogether non-existent. This paper documents tests of physical and numerical models of retaining walls with facial drainage features, including conventional weep holes as well as maintainable drains installed through the face and extending into the wall backfill. Results of the testing were used to develop generic design criteria, which establish the required drain spacing as a function of the height of groundwater above the drains and the diameter of the drain."

There are safety concerns related to operation of heavy equipment over coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundments during construction of the impoundment closure programs. As part of a pilot study prior to a full-scale closure construction, an access pathway and working platform were designed and constructed to facilitate equipment access for construction of deep soil mixing (DSM) zones on the ash delta of a CCR impoundment. The access pathway and working platform was constructed using shallow mass mixing with cement at the CCR surface to address safety concerns related to the geotechnical behavior of CCR. This paper describes the data from the instrumentation system which was implemented to monitor the geotechnical performance of the CCR during the pilot study. The instrumentation system included monitoring of the ground movement, vibration, and porewater pressure within the ash delta of the CCR impoundment during a pre-construction load testing, equipment mobilization over the access pathway, and DSM column installation over the working platform. INTRODUCTION A deep soil mixing (DSM) pilot study was conducted at a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment to evaluate mix designs and construction techniques for the regulatory closure. The DSM columns will create a wall which will separate and retain the CCR in a consolidated footprint separate from the closure by removal portion of the footprint and provide a barrier between the two areas of the surface impoundment. Historically, the surface impoundment received CCRs including fly ash, bottom ash, boiler slag, and gypsum, along with other byproducts produced from flue gas desulfurization (FGD). The predominant CCR in this impoundment were fly ash and bottom ash. The primary goals of the DSM pilot study were to assess the mix design strengths and to evaluate DSM construction techniques that could reach the design mixing depths of up to 90 ft. The DSM test columns were installed on the CCR delta approximately 500 ft from the nearest impoundment dikes. Another objective of the pilot study was to develop, construct, and monitor an access pathway for safe passage and movement of construction equipment on the CCR delta.

"Semi-Deep skirted foundations are considered to be a viable option for a variety of onshore and offshore applications. It is necessary to determine appropriate foundation configurations that allow loads to be transferred safely to the surrounding soil. For this purpose the bearing capacity and stability analyses subjected to combined vertical, horizontal and moment loadings must be found. In this paper the vertical undrained bearing capacity is estimated via finite element analyses. The circular skirted foundations with different geometries considering embedment depth (embedment ratio between 0-2) and size effects (diameter equals to 5, 10, and 20) have been studied. Stress field, kinematic mechanism accompanying failure and bearing capacity factors for total, end and shaft resistance in semi-deep foundations with various embedment ratios are investigated. Furthermore, two probable mechanisms i.e. internal flow and soil plug for estimating foundation capacity for design purpose in practice have been assessed. Comparisons with different research works including conventional methods, upper and lower bound approaches, and finite element analyses have indicated that the conventional methods underestimate the bearing capacity due to ignoring the significant role of shaft resistance. Determining appropriate economic foundation configurations to transfer loads safely to the surrounding soil is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Shape and dimension of foundations, embedment depth, soil characteristics and applied loading, all affect the foundation performance. Recent studies have shown that for foundations with large breadth and of D/B between 1 to 4, kinematic mechanisms and failure modes are different from the two main types of foundation (i.e. shallow and deep). Therefore, D/B factor must not be considered as the only factor for defining foundation type. ""Semi-Deep foundations"" are another foundation category distinguished based on their performance. This relatively new concept is becoming increasingly an optimum alternative for shallow and deep foundations to support structures especially in accessible depth. In order to get a clear overview of the grouting works carried out, to avoid misinterpretations of the data and functions shown on the display of the grout monitoring device, it is recommended to keep the flow rate as constant as possible. Obviously, at the beginning of the process, the flow rate will increase from nil to the selected "basic" value. An important question frequently addressed is also how to reduce the flow rate in nearing the GIN limit so to finally reach the target intensity. Depending on the actual conditions, there are different manners to proceed. However, the following one appears to be the most convenient. It is represented on Figure 25. Being GIN the target intensity, two new limits at, let's say, 0.95 GIN and at 1.05 GIN as shown in the figure should be defined. The selected basic grout flow rate "q0", is kept as constant as possible all along the grouting process until the 0.95 GIN limit is reached. The flow is then reduced step wise to 2/3 q0, 1/3 q0 and zero at crossing each of the three limits. A similar rule can be used in respect to the maximum pressure, while for the maximum volume the process can be stopped at one time. Obviously the number of successive limits and thus the number of steps in reducing the pressure, as well as the width of the fringes defined in said way may be adapted to the local conditions.

This paper presents a case study of a piling contract undertaken at Keble College in Oxford in the year 2001. Unusually, and for the first time in the United Kingdom, piles were successfully constructed containing a network of plastic pipes, which are subsequently to be connected to the heating and cooling system for the new building. The pipes cast in the piles facilitate the transfer and storage of geothermal energy between the structure and the underlying ground mass, allowing the new building to be both heated in winter and cooled in summer economically and in an environmentally friendly way. The philosophy of the geothermal pile technology is presented, together with the modified pile construction techniques employed on the site.

"This paper presents a case history of drilled pier construction for a new stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The stadium structure is supported on several different foundation types, with the heaviest ""mega columns"" typically bearing on drilled pier supported mats. The project includes 141 drilled piers with design diameters of 5.5, 6 and 6.5 feet. The piers bear on bedrock at depths of 20 to 110 feet below the ground surface. Many of the piers included rock sockets with design lengths of 5 to 18 feet. A pre-production drilled pier load test program was completed including one Statnamic load test, two Osterberg Cell tests and two lateral load tests. Non-destructive testing (crosshole sonic logging and sonic integrity testing) were also performed during construction. Production pier installation with over 3800 linear feet of earth excavation and over 1350 linear feet of rock excavation was completed in a little over four months. The piers were installed using both the cased hole method and the slurry method. All cased holed required downhole inspection and slurry holes were initially inspected with a mini-SID device and subsequently by sounding. Advanced drilling equipment and tooling were used to meet the production requirements for the project. This paper reviews the highly variable soil and rock conditions encountered at the site, briefly presents the results of the load tests, and discusses pier installation procedures and the equipment used for installation. The paper also presents conclusions related to the installation and lessons learned.INTRODUCTIONWith the opening of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, a new era of stadium construction began in the U.S. The new age stadiums are larger and have more amenities than their predecessors. The new Atlanta Falcons stadium is no exception. Many of the new features, including Atlanta’s innovative retractable roof, result in extraordinary structural loads. The roof structure is supported by a series of mega columns that bear on eight large caps, six of which are drilled pier supported. Each of the pier caps contains between 8 and 16 drilled piers that bear in the underlying bedrock. The design pier diameters are 6 and 6.5 feet. Augercast piles were used to support two of the mega column caps. Drilled piers, augercast piles, aggregate piers and spread footings are used to support the more lightly loaded portions of the structure."

This project included the replacement of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Atlantic 6 Bridge in New York City, which services rail traffic and spans the Van Wyck Expressway and frontage roads. The bridge re- placement was part of an overall project to widen the Van Wyck Expressway between Kew Gardens and John F. Kennedy Airport, which serves as the major route for vehicular traffic between the airport and the city. The railroad bridge crosses the expressway and frontage roads in a significantly congested area, and it services an average of approximately 140,000 commuters per day through- out the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The existing bridge superstructure and foundations were to be demolished and new structures and foundations were proposed to be constructed at the bridge's east and west abutments and center pier. The new bridge would be supported on driven H-piles. To facilitate the construction of the new bridge's abutments and center pier, a support of excavation design was required to support the grade around the existing structures. The design shown on the contract drawings included a driven soldier pile and lagging wall with multiple rows of drilled tiebacks at the abutments to laterally support excavation heights of up to 36 ft (11 m). The existing abutments are located directly adja- cent to frontage roads that have an extremely high vehicle traffic volume,
