Abstract
Constructing new infrastructure in urban areas increasingly entails the use of sophisticated techniques for soil improvement in order to minimize surface disturbances in adjacent areas and damage to existing structures. In Naples, at the new Piazza Garibaldi subway station, TREVI built a 45 m deep shaft using a hydromill, and utilized soil freezing for the excavation of the four station's tunnels, fifty meter long, located approximately 30 meters below the water table. An innovative use of directional drilling was specially developed by TREVI to successfully complete this challenging job.
