DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. Abstract -The Key Anacon deposit consists of four sulfide zones called, from south to north : Key Anacon No. 1, Key Anacon No. 2, Key Anacon No. 3, and Key Anacon Copper Zone. Massive sulfides of zones 1, 2, and 3 are underlain by rocks correlated with the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and are overlain by matie volcanic rocks correlative with the Boucher Brook Formation. In contrast to zones 1, 2, and 3, narrow northwesterly-trend.ing, copper-rich fracture zones occur within the Patrick Brook Formation. Sulfides in zone 2 occur as three mineralogical associations, namely: pyrite-chalcopyrite, pyrite-sphalerite-galerta, and pyrrhotite-sphalerite-galerta. The distribution of lithologies and en-echelon patterns of the three sulfide lenses of Key Anacon No. 2 zone are the result of F1 and F2 folding. Zone 2 is the most promising economically, with proven reserves of 1.11 million tonnes grading 0.2207o Cu, 3.47% Pb, 8.41% Zn, and 96 g/t Ag; the zone is open below a depth of 427 m.

THE chief factors influencing the decision to build the Big Missouri mill underground were the topography of the country and the climate. The location underground assured certain saving in the cost of operation, such as the hearing of the mill, shovelling snow, and handling ore, which, over a period of time, would offset the greater initial cost of the mill excavation and machinery installation underground, as compared with the cost of a like plant on the surface. At Gilman, Colorado, where conditions are somewhat similar, the Empire Zinc Company, at their Eagle mine, are treating their lead-zinc ore in a mill built entirely underground. Company officials made a study of this plant before proceeding with the mill at Big Missouri. LOCATION, CLIMATE, TOPOGRAPHY The Big Missouri mine is situated on the Upper Salmon river, 22 miles north of Stewart, B.C., which is at the head of Portland canal, a narrow natural channel which penetrates 100 miles inland from the coast into the Coast Range mountains. Stewart, the distributing centre for the district, is about 600 miles north of Vancouver. The Big Missouri claims lie on and down the sides of the Big Missouri ridge, which extends north and south between the Salmon River and Cascade Creek valleys. The ridge rises to an elevation of 3,600 feet, is about half a mile wide, and to the east slopes down to the Joker flats in Cascade Creek valley. The Big Missouri camp is located on the flats at elevation 2,800 (see Figure 1). Preliminary development of the property took place from this point with an adit driven under the ridge. The western side of the ridge slopes steeply down to the Salmon glacier at elevation 1,900. Ore found on the 2,850 level extended down, and, in order further to explore the ore-body, the 2,850 level was driven through to the west side of the ridge, a surface incline tramway was built, and a lower tunnel driven at elevation 2,350, five hundred feet below the original 2,850 level, from the west side of the ridge. This tunnel development avoided the necessity of sinking, which would have been costly, as the mine makes a great deal of water (see Figures 1 and 2).

MOST mines have a model of some kind to illustrate either geological structure, mining operation, or some special condition or feature of the property. The type used depends on the particular feature or use for which it is intended. At Dome Mines we have developed an interesting and practical application of the horizontal-type model. This model shows the workings of each level horizon plotted on glass. These glass panes are set in frames which, in turn, rest on drawers equipped with rollers which can be pulled out as desired into a light chamber. The features of this model are its rigid steel construction and that any desired number of level plans can be pulled out, eliminating any other interference from other levels. Figures 1 and 2 are photographs of the model cabinet and show its construction and general features. The cabinet is of steel construction with the following overall dimensions: width, 6 ft. 5 in.; depth, 6 ft. 7 in.; height, 5 ft. 2 in. When not in use it can be completely closed-in, making the cabinet practically dustproof. There are 30 drawers, one for each of the 29 levels and one for the surface. The glass in each drawer is divided into two panes, 36 in. by 36 in., of flatdrawn double-diamond 'lustraglass' with about l/32 in. between adjacent edges. The panes are held rigidly in the frames, which are lined with felt strips, and may be adjusted by set screws, four of which on each drawer are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The level workings, on a scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet, are traced in ivory black Windsor & Newtons artist oil paint. Co-ordinate lines are shown in crimson lake, and main geological contacts are shown in their respective colours. Figure 3 is a photograph looking down on one of the levels. The lighting consists of 14 30-watt fluorescent bulbs, with reflectors, under frosted glass. These lamps are much more satisfactory when operated by 60-cycle rather than 25-cycle and, as we had available nearby a source of direct current, this was used. The electrical unit consists of a rotary converter from d.c. to 60-cycle. This arrangement gives perfect lighting, allowing most colours to be easily distinguished. The goal of this project is to detect the presence of objects behind haul trucks and to provide an alarm to the driver if such objects are detected. Objects of interest include people, pickups, other equipment, and large rocks. Another goal is to see if the system can identify the existence of a berm and determine the distance from the truck to that berm, so a safe backup distance can be computed and used as a reference. This paper presents results that demonstrate that such a system is feasible and includes results from work at a local quarry. Architecture of the system is provided and the various subsystems are discussed. Details of the algorthims are included and discussion of the issues involved in developing a fieldable system are also included.

"Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. Inoue et al. reported that the ß-fiber components, such as Brass ({011}<211>), Copper ({112}<111>) and S ({123}<634>), increase the r-value measured in the direction of 45o with respect to the rolling direction. r"

"In the Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario the relationships between general structures and structures containing ore deposits are among the most unusual and most interesting of any in the Precambrian Shield. The more important orebodies, which are in the central-eastern part of the area, occur in a variety of rocks on the northeastern, eastern, or southeastern sides of a series of granite stocks. Other deposits in the western part of the camp also are structurally associated with granite masses .The relationships were determined in the course of general and detailed geological mapping by detailed analyses of the fracture patterns in the rocks adjacent to the orebodies. In every case it was found that the structures containing the ore were produced by compressive stresses from the direction of intrusion of the granite masses( 2).The Red Lake area lies in the Patricia part of the district of Kenora and is accessible by boat from Hudson or by airplane from Kenora, Sioux Lookout, or Winnipeg. A road from Vermilion lake, on highway No. 17, was opened in August, 1947.The first discoveries of mineralization in the area that proved to be of economic importance were made in 1925 by Lorne Howey and George McNeely for Haileybury interests and by Ray Howey and W. F. Morgan for Mcintyre-Porcupine Mines, Limited. Both prospecting ventures were organized because of information presented by Bruce(l) in his map and report for the Ontario Department of Mines. The discoveries, which were both along the same structure, a quartz porphyry dyke, later developed into the Howey and Hasaga gold mines. Other discoveries were made at intervals as a result of prospecting and development work on ground staked for its location."

"Plasma or thermal sprayed coatings are becoming more widely used in a wide range of industrial applications. The preference to use thermal sprayed coatings is mainly attributed to its superior wear, and corrosion resistant properties akin to hard chrome but without the harmful health implications of chrome in the coating process. Specifically, High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) plasma sprayed Tungsten Carbide & Cobalt (WC/Co) coatings are presently being tested on aircraft landing gear. This coating can be efficiently applied and is highly resistant to corrosion and wear. However, HVOF coating&apos;s durability also makes it difficult to be stripped for inspection and overhaul. Current coating removal methods usually involve a multi-step process whereby the coating must undergo diamond wheel grinding, chemical dipping, grit blasting, ultrahigh pressure (UHP) 380 MPa (55 Kpsi) water blasting, and subsequent chemical dipping, depending on the type and thickness of the coating. As explained by Yan, et al [l]"" a unique method has been developed for removing HVOF coatings with the use of only water. The method consists of modulating a stream of water at a pressure of only 69 MPa (10 Kpsi) with ultrasonic waves to generate a forced pulsed waterjet. The resulting cyclic loading of the hard coating due to the impact of the water pulses easily causes it to flake off the substrate. This paper will briefly describe the fundamentals of the forced pulsed waterjet technique with an emphasis on insitu applications of the removal of various plasma and HVOF coatings."

"IntroductionWITH the increase in quantity of sour gas reserves in the Province of Alberta, and the wider market for sulphur brought about by mounting world demand and restrictions placed on the principal supply, it was inevitable that this important source of sulphur would be .developed. In the light of these facts, it seems timely that a general paper on sulphur recovery from petroleum gases be presented. This, then, is the purpose of the following text. A short discussion of each of the following subjects is presented:(1) Properties and uses of sulphur(2) Existing sources(3) Market research(4) The recovery process in Turner Valley(5) Hazards of sulphur productionNo pretext of originality of material is made since innumerable reports have been prepared on this and related topics and information contained in these has been used quite liberally.Properties and uses of SulphurSulphur is a non-metallic element having an atomic weight of 32.06. The stable crystalline form at atmospheric temperature is referred to as 'rhombic' sulphur. It is bright yellow and has a specific gravity of 2.05, equivalent to 129.2 lb./cu. Ft. Above 204°F. sulphur has another stable crystalline form, referred to as 'monoclinic'. This is reddish-brown and is slightly less dense than the rhombic variety (122.4 lb./cu. Ft.). Sulphur in bulk form weighs 84 to 90 lb. per cu. Ft. Sulphur melts at approximately 240°F. to a straw coloured liquid which is quite viscous."

In this study the results of a series of numerical simulations which are conducted for one of the tunnels of the Mashhad metro line 2 project are presented to evaluate the role of tunnel face support pressure and soil strength parameters on deformation of tunnel lining and face deformation. To achieve this goal, comparative numerical simulations of a mechanized tunnel advance in soft non- homogeneous soil on top of the ground water table and beneath the building are conducted and sensitivity analysis is performed. Development of a step by step tunnel construction process is modeled using a three dimensional finite difference model (FLAC3D) taking into account all the relevant components of shield tunneling. In order to understand the mechanism of the effects of a variety of support pressures on face deformation and lining stresses, numerical simulations are conducted. It is found that the use of different face supports causes a considerable influence on the forces of tunnel lining. In addition, it is revealed that building weight help to change the stress paths and the stress distributions in the tunnel lining.

THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a family of dry magnetic concentrators which, when used in conjunction with a dry grinding mill such as an Aero-fall mill, will allow the production of a completely dry magnetite concentrate. Previous experience with extrusion of iron ore and with pelletizing of fine iron concentrates suggested that it might be possible to develop a method particularly suited to the agglomeration of completely dry concentrates which might have some practical advantages over other methods of agglomeration. Pelletizing is the preferred method of agglomerating very fine iron ore concentrates. Magnetite concentrate is fod to the pelletizing equipment in the form of a moist filter cake. Binders and plasticizers may be added if necessary, and the moisture content must be increased or adjusted to the percentage necessary to give good balling action and satisfactory green strength in the resulting moist pellets. The moist ore with a closely controlled water content of about 7 to 12 per cent moisture may be rolled into pellets by a snow-balling action in a pelletizing drum, a Lurgi pan, or a Mac-Dowell disc pelletizer. The resulting green pellets are fired by one of several alternative processes to produce a hard pellet which has sufficient strength to withstand handling and shipping.

"With the emphasis in the past decade on larger and more efficient equipment for open-pit operations, the Normandie mine of the Asbestos Corporation has followed the trend, switching from the smaller type of percussion drills to down-the-hole rigs. One 5 Y2 -in. percussion drill is still in use, but is limited to a ""smooth blasting"" role or to the control of the slope on final benches.In keeping with the times, an attempt was made to eliminate, as much as possible, the use of high explosives and to maximize the percentage of ammonium nitrate -fuel oil mixture. As the concentration of ground water increased with increased mining depths, small pumps were initially employed for the dewatering of boreholes. This proved unsuccessful, and a hole-blowing rig was built and a conversion to plastic liners made. The acquisition of a bulk-mix AN-FO truck has permitted the changeover from an AN premix to an ammonium nitrate prill -fuel oil combination at the borehole."

Prior to 2006, the filtration unit for leached sludge treatment (filter press) permitted the filtration, washing and drying of cake to 17% (w/w) moisture. That year saw moisture content abruptly increase to 20% (w/w), drastically changing the rheological properties of the cake. The cake became sticky and agglomerated. This led to major disruptions of operations and plant capacity (cake release and cake conveyor problems, complicating the subsequent steps of the process). The conditions for the filtration, washing and drying, were simulated to ease cake unloading without aggravating dust emissions (moisture about 17% (w/w)). All of the laboratory tests yielded a moisture content above 17% (w/w). Therefore, we concluded that the moisture problems were not due to a recipe change in primary material, but to an operational problem in the filter press. Through the laboratory results, the filter press operating conditions (washing ratio, drying pressure and drying time) were optimized to enable a reduction in cake moisture to 17% (w/w).

"COAL MINING at Canmore, Alberta, began in 1886 and continued there until July 1979. A comprehensive review of the Canmore operations is not available, but the following notes have been prepared to accompany references where more complete information about the operations and problems encountered may be found. The coal measures at Canmore occur in the Kootenay formation of Lower Cretaceous age, and at least twelve seams of varying thickness and horizontal extent have been recognized. The coal, of high quality, ranges from semi-anthracite in the lower seams to low-volatile bituminous in the upper seams. The strata of the Canmore area form an asymmetric syncline, the western limb being overturned to vertical by the Palaeozoic strata of the Mount Rundle Range. The eastern limb is more gently sloping, its dip ranging from IO to about 40 degrees. Tectonic movements have created a troubled and complex coal field. The seams were initially not regularly or uniformly deposited, and mountain-building activity folded and faulted the strata and in many places sheared and crushed the original structures of the coal(l,2,3,4,5). The lack of continuity of the seams, and changes in thickness and inclination, made longrange mine planning difficult and necessitated flexible methods of work, and the local disturbances sometimes created problems in roof support and contributed to the occurrence of sudden outbursts of coal and gas. Almost all of the coal was produced from underground operations but a few relatively small V-cut mines were worked along surface outcrops. These have all been filled in and revegetated. The basic method of underground work was by room-and-pillar, but many variations in layout and sequences were employed. Gangways were driven along the strike and pillars were formed by raises or slopes and crosscuts. Pillars were recovered to the extent that ground conditions permitted by splitting or taking 'skips' from the sides of the raises or splits or crosscuts. Because of the variety of conditions that existed in the field a considerable range of cutting, loading and support methods were employed, including hand-loading, slushers and scrapers, duckbills and shaker conveyors, mobile loaders and continuous miners. Except for the coal obtained by continuous miners most of the coal was broken out by blasting when driving narrow working places or by air picks when cutting from a face. In the early years hand loading onto cars or conveyors predominated. A continuous miner was introduced into Canmore in 1959 on a trial basis, and another was subsequently acquired, in order to minimize blasting and hand loading, but problems in operating these machines in inclining seams and difficulties in providing safe roof support for the machines and workers restricted their efficient use. Another major difficulty with the use of continuous miners was the problem of ventilating development headings in the very gassy conditions. In the early 1970s they were replaced by electric and compressed air slushers and scrapers, resulting in a general increase in productivity, roof control, safety, and flexibility of operations(1.6,7,8.9)."

"Introduction The Boundary Dam Mine is located 5 km south of the City of Estevan, Saskatchewan and is operated by Manitoba and Saskatchewan Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar companies. The entire production of 1.7 million tonnes per year is delivered to the Boundary Dam Generating Station of Saskatchewan Power Corporation. Geology There are basically two seams mined on the property, the main Estevan seam ranging in thickness from 3.0 m to 4.5 m with partings and the upper Roche Percee seam (roughly 15 m to 23 m above the Estevan) which ranges from 0.6 m to 2.0 m in thickness. Most of the reserves are concentrated in the Estevan seam, the Roche Percee only being mined whenever its thickness makes it economic to recover. The coal measures belong to the Ravenscrag Formation of Tertiary (Paleocene) Age. This formation is widespread in North Dakota and Montana and contains the lignite fields of North Dakota and subbituminous coals of Montana. The formation is gently tilted to the southeast at Boundary (0.5 degrees) and consists of weak sandstones, siltstones and silty mudstones. Reserves and Coal Quality The present minesite encompasses a coal reserve of approximately 50 million tonnes calculated to a maximum stripping depth of 37 metres or 20:1 mining ratio. The reserves form only a part of the total reserves in the Estevan area which are owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. In a cool mine, tapping high-pressure lines through reducing valves lowers the temperature beyond remedy. It is the writer&apos;s suggestion that, for low-pressure work, law-pressure air ,should be generated in a compressor installed underground adjacent to the work, and that the jacket-water of the compressor should be utilised for re-heating purposes. Such a system of compressed air distribution, designed especially for service in cool mines, is described in the following notes. The suggested system includes a three-wire pole line from the sub-station to the opening nearest to the working face, with a cable connection extending to the latter from the openings; an electrical centrifugal unit; a reservoir excavated in the ground; and a distribution line, re-heated by jacket-water. As regards the reservoir, it may be pointed out that in many mines there are blind or abandoned tunnels that could be used for the purpose. The centrifugal type of compressed air machine is a comparatively new departure, and it was formerly considered that such a machine, operating at less than 1,000 kilowatts per unit, would be commercially impracticable. At the present time, however, these machines are being built in Europe for as little as 400 kilowatts per unit, and as much as 110 lb. per sq. inch pressure. One advantage which these centrifugal machines have over other types is that they may be driven by plain induction motors, without the help of special starters-a consideration of the first importance where the electrical regulations are severe.

THIS PAPER describes the re-grind section in the 2,000-ton per day, lead-zinc flotation mill of Canadian Exploration Limited, near Salmo, B.C. There are two re-grind units in operation, one in the lead circuit, and one in the zinc circuit. In each unit, the rougher concentrate is re-ground ahead of the cleaning circuit. These re-grind units have made valuable improvements in the concentrate grade, and with no loss in recovery by over-grinding galena or sphalerite. Since the initial installation of this re-grind section, the plant throughput has been increased gradually from 1,600 tons to 2,000 tons per twenty-four hours, and, as shown by the screen analysis of mill tailing, a coarser overall grind has been accepted, from 55 per cent to 45 per ?cent minus 200 mesh. There has been no increase in grinding capacity, but two mills have been taken from the main grinding circuit and used for the re-grind circuit.

There is increasing use of acid leach extraction methods at elevated temperatures and pressures by the mining industry. In many locations there are limited supplies of fresh water, and waters with higher chloride contents must be used, making conditions more corrosive. The fluids downstream of the main autoclave are hot, acidic, oxidizing and contain chlorides and present a challenge to the mining community to ensure reliable operation. Zeron 100 is a high strength superduplex stainless stee, that offers high corrosion resistance at a cost effective price. The paper presents a combination of laboratory data and service experience, particularly in the aggressive fluids found in downstream processing.

A GREAT deal of work has been done at Britannia during the past three years in improving and standardizing rounds for development headings, and the results obtained have been very gratifying. The round which has recently been adopted as a standard for all drifts and cross-cuts has, in some instances, doubled the average length of break formerly obtained. It has also increased the footage of advance per labour shift and reduced explosives&apos; consumption. At the present time, with a shortage of skilled labour, more control is necessar7 in directing the drilling of rounds. The use of a standard round has been o great assistance to the foremen and shiftbosses. NATURE OF GROUND Most of the ground encountered consists of a moderately silicified chlorite schist, known locally as G.M.S (green-mottled schist). It cannot be termed hard ground, because a three and one-half inch Leyner will drill at an average rate of twelve inches per minute. Due to the abrasive nature of the ground, the gauge of the steel wears rapidly and in most cases one set of steel is needed for each hole. The ground is not &apos;free breaking and holes must be spaced correctly to obtain a maximum break. DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD ROUND FOR THREE-SHIFT OPERATION Late in 1940, a development programme was started involving 7,000 feet of drifting, 6 ft. By 7 1/2 ft. In cross-section, in two headings. Plans were drawn up to advance the headings on three shifts. Equipment used in the headings was as follows: D.A.35 Leyner?machines, Eimco Model 12B mucking machines, nine one-ton end-dump cars, one Mancha Little Trammer on the longest heading, 20-pound rail, 4-in. 15 compressed-air line, 15-in. Fan pipe connected to 5 h. P. Coppus fan. Diamond-drill cross-cuts, 16 feet in length, were cut every 250 feet. Switches were installed at these cross-cuts and they served as passing points for the cars. One siding seventy feet in length was cut in each heading at approximately the half-way point. The cycle of operations planned was to muck out, drill, and blast each shift. Previous performance in this type of ground indicated that a daily advance of 12 feet to 14 feet might be made. However, if a better type of round could be developed, an increased daily advance would be possible. A study of the time available for each operation in a net working shift of six and one-half hours indicated that the maximum depth of round that could be mucked, drilled, and blasted each shift would be six and one-half feet. When this maximum depth was decided upon, the next problem was to develop a satisfactory round. Due to ventilation difficulties and to the short net working shift, the whole round had to be blasted at one time. In other words, no blasting of the cut-holes could be done.
