"Syncrude has entered a new era involving the use of pipeline slurries to convey oil sand to the extraction plant. Hydrotransport operations and base plant operations encounter vast performance differences when processing different types of oil sand. This paper describes the hydrotransport process, its history at Syncrude, methods of describing the source ore characteristic and plant performance. The use of this information within Syncrude and how it will be managed on an ongoing basis will also be described. IntroductionThe Syncrude Canada Ltd. site is located 43 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, on the Athabasca oil sand deposit. The Syncrude operation consists of mining, extraction, upgrading, utilities and other support facilities. The mined ore is sent to the extraction plant where water and solids are removed from the bitumen. The bitumen is then sent to the upgrading plants to be further processed into Syncrude Sweet Blend (a light sweet crude oil). Syncrude produced 73.5 Mbbls of Syncrude Sweet Blend in 1996 and produced 75.7 Mbbls in 1997. Prior to 1993, Syncrude moved ore from the pit to the extraction plant via four dragline / bucketwheel/ conveyor systems. These systems, supplemented by auxiliary ore crushers, satisfied the feed requirements of the extraction plant. Ore was conveyed to the control tower area and placed in the dump pocket via four radial stackers. Various blending scenarios occurred at this point, using feed from the four mining quadrants and from auxiliary feed crushers. Upon entering the extraction plant from the base mine, the oil sand passed through a series of tumblers where it was mixed with hot water and caustic. It then proceeded to one of four primary separation vessels where bitumen froth was floated off and the middlings and coarse fractions were recombined and sent to the tail oil recovery vessels, or TORs, for further processing."

The purpose of this paper is to outline a recent development in ground fault protection. The paper deals with the A problems of both grounded and ungrounded systems, with regard to hazards to personnel and equipment, and shows that the increased sensitivity and speed of operation of this new detector results in increased safety to personnel and reduced stresses on equipment, and permits the detection of leakage currents before they become serious faults. The detector can be applied to all distribution systems, either A.C. or D.C., up to 15 kv., and the detector itself can be tested at regular intervals without interrupting line circuits. T HERE is always controversy among engineers as to whether distribution systems should be grounded or ungrounded. "AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The effect of shims on conical drill rod attachments, the mechanism of failure of drill steel, .and stresses during mine drilling, are analysed.IntroductionIN MINE DRILLING operations, the main interests are: the drilling machines as a source of working energy, the drill set as the tool transferring the working energy to the cutting edges of the bit, and, finally, the drilling characteristic of the .ore or waste rock.This paper includes a review of the possibilities of metallurgical and mechanical improvements in the drill set, with particular attention to drill steel and the attachments.For economical and efficient mine drilling operations, a durable drill rod, attachment, and drill bit are essential. A mini- or micro-machine is a small electro- mechanical device. There are several existing applications of micro-sensors such as the accelerometers used in automobile airbags or the force sensors and grippers used at the ends of micro-surgery tools. Potential applications of existing mini- and micro-technologies are possible and could be used to improve the control and efficiency of fragmentation, heap leaching and other mining and mineral processing operations. A more radical proposition is to devise mass-produced, possibly disposable, minimachines that would operate in large groups. These would be the basis of highly selective, efficient, flexible, and clean mining and mineral processing methods. The paper is intended to promote discussion of how innovative applications of mini-technologies can be used to improve and radically change current mining and mineral processing methods.

"The large low-grade Copper Mountain deposit is located in the northern portion of the Gaspé Cooper Mines property. It is approximately 1 mile north of the Needle Mountain deposit. The orebody outlined to date lies in the top 1,000 feet of the Grande Greve formation. Chalcopyrite occurs in association with pyrite and quartz in small veinlets and numerous fractures. The deposit is immediately adjacent and parallel to a quartz-feldspar dyke and may be associated with a nearby porphyry stock. Stratigraphy, alteration and structure appear to have played an important role in ore deposition."

Uranium can be recovered from lower grade uranium ores (<800 mg/kg U3O8), leach residues, and waste dumps cost-effectively via resin-in-pulp (RIP). Using this technology, no solid/liquid separation or washing of the leach residues are required. Furthermore, the uranium recovery can be higher than with conventional methods. RIP technologies have, however, been perceived negatively due to concerns around potential resin fouling and losses. This paper highlights the advancements made in RIP and discusses a number of potential applications where the technology could deliver economic and consequential environmental benefits by reducing the uranium levels in the waste.

To those who may not be familiar with the history and organization of the Flin Flon mining property from the rime of its examination and option by the Harry Payne Whitney interests until the present start of operations by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, this paper may give a better understanding of the property. More technical discussions are being presented to you by the men most closely connected with the various operations of the property. Location The Flin Flon mine is situated along the boundary line between the Provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan at approximately. 54° 45? north latitude, but largely in Manitoba. Prior to the advent of the railway, the property was quite isolated. The summer route was over a course of some 175 miles, consisting of a 125-mile boat trip from The Pas, first up the Saskatchewan river, then across Cumberland and Sturgeon lakes to Sturgeon? Landing. From Sturgeon Landing, a .16-mile portage was necessary to Camp 2 on lake Athapapaskow. From Camp 2 the route consisted of a canoe trip of 32 miles across lake Athapapaskow, up the northwest arm of Schist lake, then up Ross creek to the Company&apos;s docks, and finally a 2-mile walk to the property. The winter route was just under 100 miles in length, the difference being due to the fact that a more direct route could be followed over the frozen lakes. It went up the Saskatchewan river for a short distance above The Pas and then, leaving the river, the road followed Reeder, Rocky, and Sturgeon lakes to Sturgeon Landing, and from there over the same route as the summer one, only across the frozen lakes.

"Numerical simulation of collapse of tunnels in weak rocks is one of the challenging problems in rock mechanics. Collapse can impose technical and financial difficulties during the construction of underground excavations. This phenomenon, particularly in shallow excavations, may lead to propagation of a caved zone toward the surface and formation of chimney subsidence. Chimney subsidence has numerous catastrophic consequences such as the adverse environmental impacts and damage to surface structures in vicinity of excavations. Due to the importance of subsidence in civil engineering, the main goal of this study is to propose an appropriate method for preventing the formation of subsidence in shallow tunnels in weak rocks. The Dolaei road tunnel is investigated as a case study, where a large chimney subsidence has occurred. The geology of the area and the geostructural characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel are briefly reviewed in this paper. Two-dimensional as well as threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted to study the tunnel stability. Moreover, the effects of staged excavation and pre-supporting method on controlling the ground movements are studied. Outcomes of this study indicate that employing forepoling and staged excavation can be a practical remedy to control the ground movements and prevent the formation of chimney subsidence.INTRODUCTIONPredicting the formation of subsidence, mainly sinkhole subsidence over civil or mining excavations, is a very challenging task. An accurate prediction of subsidence is required for selecting an appropriate control and mitigation system to reduce the level of ground movements and its impact on the surface life (Bétournay et al. 1994; Leca and New 2007). Excavations, particularly in weak grounds, could result in surface subsidence; they modify the in-situ stress conditions as well as the hydrogeology of the area. Construction of unsupported excavations in soft soils and relatively weak rocks usually leads to the formation of a failure zone behind the face. In a very soft ground, the failure zone can extend towards the ground ahead of the tunnel face. Propagation of this zone toward the ground surface results in generation of sinkholes."

"Smelting furnace bricks contain significant quantity of base metals trapped in refractory material. A series of flotation tests were carried out on samples of old bricks from Sudbury area to examine upgrading behaviour for recycling purposes. Depending on the grind size used nickel recoveries varied from 60 to 90.6% with corresponding grades of 20% and 14.7%Ni. There is a trade-off between nickel and copper. The nickel has responded well to fine grinding, however, the copper recovery suffered from it. Mineralogical characteristics and flotation behaviour of the brick material are discussed in reference to those from the primary ore. INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is well recognized as a mature technology not only for the mining industry, but also for the environmental industry for the purpose of remediation and recycling. Materials available for recycling are usually the products of many years ago. There are multiple stake holders in this area. In general, when the processing results in a product that can be reused or sold, the company carrying out the remediation makes a profit, while the regulators and the public are pleased due to a cleaner environment. From these points of view, there have been many papers published over the years on various mineral processing techniques applied to separation of many different materials including from mining and metallurgical industries (Wilson et al., 1994; Tsunekawa et al., 2005; Saikia et al., 2012).Flotation may be viewed as the backbone of the mining and metallurgical industry since its invention for separation of solids from one another almost a century ago. It is capable of recovering a variety of finely divided different solids following their liberation from each other. Its versatility and highly competitive nature in terms of cost per tonne of material processed, accounts for its occasional uses in the environment engineering area. In the mining industry, flotation is the standard method used for the sulphide ores. It can be applied as a bulk flotation and/or differential flotation. Bulk flotation, which refers to co-flotation of several components from their source, is most suitable for environmental cleanup objectives. Desulphurisation of various plant tailings is a typical example of this (Benzazzoua et al., 2000)."

"When a conductive or magnetic particle was put into an electromagnetic field introduced by an electromagnetic sensor, the particle can influence the electromagnetic field which can be used to characterize this particle. The electromagnetic technology based on eddy current theory was explored to investigate its potential in both the separation of minerals and the pre-concentration of a base metal ore. Samples tested in the study included the minerals obtained from Ward’s Science and the low grade copper ore particles obtained from Mount Polley Mine. The effects of mineral type, sensor frequency, particle size, particle position on the sensor surface, and particle lift-off on the magnitude and phase of the electromagnetic spectra were investigated. The electromagnetic spectra of various minerals show that it is possible to separate chalcopyrite or magnetite from tested minerals, simply based on the magnitude of the spectra. The spectra of the ore particles were determined by the mineral in the particles with the strongest signal. The effect of the pre-concentration of the low grade copper ore is determined by the association of chalcopyrite with magnetite. Direct sorting is the mechanism in the separation of mineral particles, while indirect sorting is the mechanism for low grade ores.INTRODUCTIONSensor-based sorting technologies include radiometric, X-ray transmission, X-ray fluorescence, near infrared, photometric, inductive, microwave heating and so on. Sorting not only discards barren rocks away from the concentrator but also recovers metal bearing that would be lose to the waste dump. The benefits of pre-concentration using sensor-based sorting are achieved on reduced energy consumption for comminution and reduced water usage on a volume per weight of metal basis (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Knapp, Neubert, Schropp, & Wotruba, 2014; Kobzev, 2014; Lessard, de Bakker, & McHugh, 2014; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013). Amongst others, high frequency electromagnetic sensors were developed for ore sorting at MineSense Technologies Ltd. and are subject of this paper. Improving the understanding of ore heterogeneity is the basis for developing a successful semi-bulk or bulk sorting systems by incorporating the sensors in the material handling equipment (MineSense Technologies Ltd., 2016). The present study focuses on the bulk sorting potential and bulk sorting mechanisms of the electromagnetic technology in the pre-concentration of minerals or ores."

"In beneficiation process, metal ions could adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces or interact with flotation chemicals, and then result in the flotation behavior changing of desired minerals. Al(III) is the dominating ion existing in the bauxite flotation system. In this research, the adsorption behaviors of Al(III) on two silicate clay minerals (including bentonite and kaolin) were investigated by means of UV-Vis spectra, zeta potential testing and scanning electron micrograph analysis. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of clays for Al(III) ions increases with the initial Al(III) concentration, contact time and solution pH. There are some different adsorption behaviours for two clays. Increasing the clay concentration decreases the adsorption capacity of bentonite, while increases first then decreases for kaolin. Higher temperature favours the adsorption of Al(III) on bentonite but goes against for kaolin. The adsorption capacities of bentonite and kaolin for Al(III) respectively reach 12.48 and 0.875 mg/g at initial solution pH 5. Zeta potential results show that the adsorption of Al(III) on two clays is characterized by electrostatic attraction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONIn beneficiation process, there is inevitably a wide variety of metal ions generated from mineral crushing, mineral dissolution and water chemistry conditions. Metal ions adsorb on the mineral surfaces or interact with the beneficiation agents, affecting the flotation efficiency of desired minerals (DiFeo et al., 2001; Parolis et al., 2008; Shackleton et al., 2012; Shengo et al., 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed investigation on the adsorption behaviour of metal ions on clay minerals.Having good ion exchange capacity and negative surface charge, the clay minerals could take up various metal ions from the mineral-water system. Bentonite and kaolin are very common aluminosilicate clays in the mineral processing system. These two clays both hold a permanent negative charge, =X- on the basal surfaces, and a smaller variable charge, =SiOH on the mineral edges (Gu & Evans, 2008; (Gu et al., 2010). Adsorption experiments are usually used to study the adsorption affinity of metal ions for clay minerals (Sen & Bhattacharyya, 2012). The adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto natural bentonite showed that the adsorption amounts of metal ions increase with contact time, solution pH and metal ion concentration, but decreases with adsorbent concentration and system temperature (Sen & Gomez, 2011; Melichova & Hromada, 2013). Cr(III) adsorption on bentonite was significantly pH dependent. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption was consistent with Freundlich isotherm (Lollino et al., 2015). The adsorption behaviours of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) onto kaolin indicated that increasing pH favoured the adsorption of metal ions (Jiang et al., 2010). The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto kaolin showed that an ion-exchange reaction occurred at pH<7.0 and inner-sphere surface complexes were prone to form at higher pH (Srivastava et al., 2005)."

"The United States contains a variety of domestic rare earth element mineral sources containing such as ancylite, bastnasite, monazite, and xenotime. Research has been performed to investigate the fundamental surface chemistry involved in the froth flotation of these minerals, and apply the knowledge gained to substantiate the results through experimental testwork on a domestically sourced rare earth ore. This paper will outline the fundamentals and literature of rare earth mineral flotation, review its industrial applications and provide some recent research updates.THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTSRare earth elements (REE’s) are a unique family of elements with nearly identical physical and chemical properties. They account for approximately 1/6th of all naturally occurring elements, but the entire group occupies only one position on the periodic table. These 15 elements make up the lanthanide series (atomic numbers 57–71), and all but one (promethium) occur naturally. In addition to these 15 elements, yttrium and scandium are also considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same deposits as the rare earths and share similar physical and chemical properties as seen in Figure 1. In particular Figure 2 denotes, a cartoon of the subtle differences in each caused by the 4f atomic sub shell (Gschneidner Jr., 1964). These subtle differences result in very difficult challenges in the selective concentration and final separation of each rare earth. (Anderson, 2015, Kronholm, Anderson, Taylor, 2013)Rare earths are separated into two different subsections; the “lights” or LREE’s (lanthanum57 through europium63) and the “heavies” or HREE’s (gadolinium64 through lutetium71). Yttrium is generally considered a heavy rare earth since its ionic radius is close to that of the HREE’s, while scandium is not considered either a light or a heavy."

Environmental monitoring plays a key role in coal mine safety. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of systems suitable for monitoring air in underground coal mines. Because of intensive mining and large capital outlay, the need for higher productivity consistent with safety is well recognized and it appears that environmental monitoring may help achieve this objective. This paper reviews the state-of- the-art in the monitoring technology with particular reference to hazardous gas detection in underground coal mines. The preliminary results obtained from ongoing studies, with regard to continuous monitoring of methane and carbon monoxide in mine air in some of the operations in Western Canada, are discussed. The inadequacies of the methods using spot samples are examined and the need to supplement the present practice with continuous monitoring systems is emphasized.

"As mines are constantly growing and expanding, so do the challenges for emergency response teams. They have to keep up with the pace set by current and future production techniques. Although mines have now reached depths of several kilometres and their dimensions and complexity are that of an entire city, mines rescue still must be able to reach the most remote areas within the mine in a swift and safe manner. The duration of breathing apparatus and physical human capabilities are limitations. Therefore, alternative methods have to be explored to extend the time under oxygen for mine rescue teams without putting additional stress on the team members. To address this global trend, Dräger, Goldcorp and PAUS have partnered to develop a mine rescue vehicle that allows mine rescue teams to travel for an extended period of time through a contaminated atmosphere without the use of breathing apparatus, thus extending the range of their mission. By applying currently available techniques, the safe expansion of mine production can be ensured, giving mine rescue teams the ability to respond to accidents in a safer and faster way. INTRODUCTION With the reduction of easily accessible natural resources, there is a global trend toward searching for higher ore grades underground and/or continually expanding mines underground to extend their lifetime. While in some areas this trend has just begun, in other countries mines are reaching depths or horizontal dimensions that pose extreme challenges (Codelco, 2016). These challenges include safety relevant topics, such as rock stability, heat and seismicity, but also more basic issues such as distances to the working face, which can become crucial considering the cost to develop a new shaft or decline. To overcome this, there is a growing interest in collaboration among various stakeholders to drive the development and support of deeper mines and tackle the complexity of underground mining. This is evidenced by the fact that several industry and research groups and networks have formed, e.g. the I2mine project in Europe and the Ultra-Deep Mining Network by the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation in Canada. Due to commodity pricing and the trend toward renewable energy, metal/non-metal mining will be the driving force behind this development."

429 As part of Inco&apos;s S02 abatement project for its Sudbury operations, a weak acid treatment plant (W ATP) was commissioned at the Copper Cliff smelter in August of 2004 to treat the weak acid streams generated by the flash furnaces, the MK reactor and the fluidized bed roaster (FBR) gas cleaning plants. The W ATP process was developed by Inco Technical Services Limited (ITSL) by means of laboratory and mini-pilot plant programs. In the W ATP process, the feed solution containing arsenic, sulphur dioxide, iron and other impurities is treated by oxidation and neutralization to form a stable precipitate for disposal in Inco&apos;s tailings impoundment area. During the commissioning of the WATP, a team of operations, maintenance, engineering, project and R&D personnel was formed, and the designed capacity was achieved in less than a month. Since then, the W A TP has been operating smoothly and the impurities, specifically arsenic, in the Copper Cliff smelting process have been effectively removed.

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. "The Bayer process involves the digestion of bauxite in caustic liquors at high temperature and pressure. Typically the digestion section of the plant involves the heating of liquors up to the digestion temperature followed by flashing of the digestion product to atmospheric pressure with the flashed steam used to pre-heat the incoming cold slurry. Despite the heat recovery, the digestion process is a high consumer of energy. The application of tube digestion technology in such plants has resulted in significant improvements in refinery energy efficiency with associated benefits of process simplification and refinery flow sheet capital cost reduction. This paper reviews the potential application of this technology to other metals within the non-ferrous industry.THE BAYER PROCESSA typical Bayer flow sheet is shown in Figure 1. The raw feed material bauxite (containing aluminium hydroxide as gibbsite Al(OH)3 and boehmite AlO(OH)) is digested in caustic liquors (caustic soda is the solvent) at high temperature and pressure. This process extracts the alumina and silica and any carbon present on the ore. The slurry is then flashed down to atmospheric condition allowing for heat recovery from the flashed vapour and producing slurry supersaturated in alumina.Following the digestion process the mud is removed via thickening and then pressure filtration to remove fine particulate and produce a clarified liquor with dissolved alumina in solution. The resulting pregnant liquor is then cooled allowing the alumina in solution to precipitate as aluminium trihydrate Al(OH)3. The precipitated hydrate is then filtered and washed and classified into fine and coarse fractions. The fine material is returned to the precipitation process as seed while the coarse fraction is calcined at high temperature to produce alumina. The filtrate from the filtration process (spent liquor) is then heated by the incoming pregnant liquor before being fed to an evaporation process which produced the strong caustic liquor required in the digestion process. Finally, the mud from the thickening process is washed to recover caustic and then fed to tailings ponds. The washer overflow is then mixed with the digester product to increase super-saturation."

Practices used to grow vegetation on stressed areas, the beneficial aspect of the improved aesthetic appearance of company properties from the point of view of public relations and the improved approach to the workplace by the employee are discussed. The revegetation of the tailings area and its gradual transformation into a Wildlife Management Area is reviewed.

Regeneration of hydrochloric acid steel pickle liquors has traditionally been accomplished by pyrohydrolysis. However, a number of factors have recently conspired to reduce the attractiveness of this approach. Moreover, the process is not amenable to small-scale operations. On the other hand, the standard technique for regeneration of sulfuric acid pickle liquors, which is the low-temperature crystallization of ferrous sulfate is applicable to any size operation. A similar technique has recently been developed to regenerate hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric acid is added to the ferrous chloride-bearing spent HCl pickle liquor. The temperature is then reduced to below 0°C, resulting in the crystallization of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate and liberation of free hydrochloric acid. Depending upon the crystallization temperature, variable concentrations of sulfate are left in the regenerated acid. Although this residual sulfate has an impact on the pickling characteristics of the regenerated acid, tests have shown that by adjusting the conditions, pickling rates will be at least equal to those using pure HCI, and an acceptable surface finish will be produced.
