New data indicate Wernecke Breccia-associated iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits likely formed from moderate-temperature, high-salinity, non-magmatic brines. The breccias formed in an area underlain by a sedimentary sequence that locally contained evaporites (potential source of chloride and possibly sulfur) and was thick enough to produce elevated fluid temperatures. Metals (Fe, Cu, Co, U) were probably derived from host strata, transported as chloride complexes, and precipitated due to changes in fluid temperature and pressure during brecciation. These new data suggest that the spectrum of genetic models for IOCG deposits that typically invoke formation from magmatic or hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic fluids should be expanded to include those systems that formed in a non-magmatic environment. Modifications to the definition of IOCG systems are proposed that reflect the degree of involvement of magmatic and/or non-magmatic fluids and the nature of the mineralizing environment. A division into magmatic, non-magmatic, and hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic IOCG types is suggested. Typical magmatic end-member IOCG deposits include Lightning Creek and Eloise, Australia. Hybrid magmatic-nonmagmatic IOCG examples include Ernest Henry and Olympic Dam, Australia. The Wernecke Breccia and Redbank deposits are suggested as possible representatives of non-magmatic IOCG end members. Endmember magmatic IOCG deposits have similarities to some porphyry deposits, whereas non-magmatic IOCG end members share characteristic with some sediment-hosted Cu deposits, suggesting that the range of IOCG deposits may form a link between intrusive- and sediment-related deposits

"IntroductionGeneralThe Genesee Coal Mine is a joint venture of Fording Coal Limited and the city of Edmonton. The mine supplies thermal coal to the Genesee Generating Station operated by Edmonton Power and is located approximately 75 km southwest of Edmonton (Fig. I).Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Fording Coal Limited has designed and developed the Genesee Coal Mine. Fording also operates the mine which has a minimum economic life of thirty-five years. Mine development started in the spring of 1987 with the construction of the dragline erection pad and mine service complex. Major development of mining areas was carried out in 1988 with the construction of haul roads, powerlines, topsoil recovery, etc. Mining officially commenced on December 14,1988.The mine produces 1.6 million tonnes of coal per year and employs 65 people. MiningGround conditions have turned out to be very poor, as expected with the majority of the overburden in the first few years a soft lacustrine clay with minor amounts of fine-grained glacial till. To compound matters, what was expected to be a relatively uniform coal subcrop turned out to be a very irregular erosional contact.The coal mined at Genesee is a sub-bituminous Class B thermal coal with approximately 16070 ash, 21% moisture, 8300 Btu/lb and 0.27% sulphur on an as-mined basis.The primary piece of mining equipment used at the Genesee Coal Mine is a M8200 walking dragline. It has an effective operating radius of 100.6 m, a 50.5 m3 bucket, and weighs approximately 3860 tonnes yielding a ground pressure of III KN/m2•Figure 2 illustrates schematically the single pass mining sequence presently employed at the Genesee Coal Mine. The M8200 is used to lift all coal out of the cut, the coal being placed in stockpiles on the prepared pad .This method maximizes coal recovery under the conditions where spoil failures due to poor material would otherwise put men and equipment at risk. The coal is subsequently loaded by the coal shovel operating on the same bench as the M8200 dragline and delivered to the plant as required.All mined areas, as required under Alberta Legislation, are to be returned to an agricultural land capability equal to or better than that which existed prior to mining. Reclamation activities, as a result, are an important and integral part of the mining process. A complete list of the primary mining equipment deployed at the Genesee Operations appears in Table I."

"The successful implementation of a new technology in an underground production mine requires many challenges to be overcome. These challenges include mine hardening of new technology, mitigation of safety risks and hazards, mine operation support, and technology transfer to mine staff. In the end, the majority of these challenges relate to the human aspects of implementation. The approach selected to overcome these challenges must be customized and appropriate for each unique situation.This paper outlines the approach used to address these challenges as part of successful implementation and resulting demonstration of the hydrogen fuel cell locomotive at the Placer Dome (CLA) Limited Campbell Mine. This technology demonstration at Campbell Mine is critical for determining technical, regulatory, and implementation aspects to be incorporated into future fuel cell prototypes such as the LHD project."

Energy conservation is an integral part of Canada's energy strategy. We must pursue conservation and energy management vigorously if we are to remain competitive in domestic and world markets, and minimize our reliance on external energy sources. Energy management in industry is discussed from three viewpoints: (l) as a means of directly improving profitability; (2) as a major factor in the supply picture; and (3) as a significant influence on Canada's balance of payments and over-all economic well-being. The Federal role in promoting a voluntary industrial energy conservation program is described.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

"In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

"Many advances in glass technology and processing are being made and the possibilities for glass as a material in the future appear unlimited. Float glass, glass-ceramics, high-strength sheet and container glass, glass-reinforced plastics, glass for electronic equipment, aerospace glass, glass fibres, glass vehicles, glasses with selective-reflective coatings and glare-reducing glasses, to name a few, provide areas of significance at present and for the future. There appear to be great opportunities, in certain localities of Canada, to develop new sources of raw materials for an expanding Canadian glass industry.New developments in the structural clay products industry have centered around facing brick as a structural load-bearing material, prefabricated brick panels, large-sized units, isostatic pressing of sewer pipe and auto-matic settmg of brick. Fast-firing techniques, using prefired or calcined raw materials, and the development of high-strength products will result in the use of a wider range of raw materials in the whiteware and structural clay products industries.Porcelain enamel, a material used for many years in domestic appliances and for sanitary ware, now is used extensively in architecture, agriculture, water tanks, highway signs and reflectors, and in products where resistance to corrosion-plus-temperature is important. Exotic composites of ceramics and metals, and specialized ceramic coatings applied on metals by various techniques such as flame spray, plasma jet, or vapour and chemical deposition have proved useful in materials for aircraft power plants, rockets, missiles and nuclear applications."

"AbstractA number of panels of various aluminum alloys in different combinations and secured by steel and three types of aluminum rivets were exposed underground at two locations in a Northern Ontario gold mine for two years and then examined to determine the extent of corrosion. The results indicate Alcan 65S-T to possess considerable advantages over Alcan 178-T, which has been employed in the construction of light skips and cages with considerable success for almost twenty years. Information on the behaviour of these alloys when used with steel rivets and in mixed combinations with themselves was obtained.IntroductionBy the complete substitution of aluminum alloys for steel in the fabrication of mining skips and cages, their weight can be reduced as much as 50 per cent. Lesser savings are possible though its savings are possible through its plates, doors, reinforcing members, etc. Reduced weight leads to economy through increased hoisting efficiency.For a new installation, the basis of design is the rate of production, which thus fixes the live load to be hoisted per trip. A lighter skip permits the use of a lighter rope and a smaller hoist. In deep shafts with high-speed hoists operated in balance, the power required for accelerating is considerable. The hoist size is determined by the weight of skip, load, and rope plus the force required to accelerate or decelerate these three elements A light skip may result in a considerably lighter rope. This is important because, even though the skip can be completely balanced this is not true of the rope. Partial balancing is possible, but conical hoist drums or other devices for this purpose are costly; thus a smaller rope results in a smaller hoist, with consequent general reduction in cost of the whole installation. A reduction in power consumption is also obtained as a result of keeping to a minimum the amount of unbalanced load and the weight of all moving parts which must be accelerated."

The Dy deposit is a 21 Mt Pb-Zn-Ag-Au SEDEX-type massive sulphide resource located in the Anvil District, Faro, Yukon. This relatively unexplored orebody lies at a depth of 480 to 920m below surface, dips 20 to 35o and comprises vertical ore thicknesses of 3 to 28m at a 9% Pb + Zn cut-off grade. The deposit has been tested at depth with 63 surface diamond drillholes, but has not yet been explored or developed by underground means. Over the past decade, pre-feasibility investigations were conducted for two separate owners of the property to determine the economic viability of developing an underground mine at Dy. Following these previous studies an assessment was undertaken between 1998 and 2000 to further investigate geotechnical considerations for underground mining. The results and conclusions drawn from this study provide direction for possible future exploration at Dy.

I N presenting this paper, the writer wishes to point out some of the difficulties and problems of geological work in that part of Saskatchewan in which outcrops are few. These problems are well known to all geologists who have made investigations in this region, but may not be so well known to those outside. A table of the strata as known in certain areas of Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces is given, with a brief discussion of some of the formations and beds about which there is little knowledge due to their being deeply buried and not exposed in the region. Comment with regard to possible oil and gas structures is made and some features of the structures in the Battleford and Simpson districts are described. The writer wishes to make acknowledgment to members of the Geological Survey of Canada to whose work in Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces reference is made, and to others who have made, or are making, valuable contributions to the stratigraphy of Saskatchewan. Mr. G. C. Webb has kindly furnished information regarding and materials taken from a well bored recently in the Paynton district. Special thanks are due to the Simpson Oil and Gas Company for permission to use much valuable information with regard to their wells and for the generous way in which the officials and staff co-operated with the writer. The opportunities the writer has had to visit many parts of the Province have been in connection with investigations for the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and through facilities provided by the Department of Soils of the University of Saskatchewan. For the purposes of this discussion, Central Saskatchewan may be considered as that portion of the Province extending from Township 16, with Regina, Moose Jaw, and Swift Current situated on or near the southern boundary, to Township 48, with Prince Albert and Lloydminster on the northern boundary. This region includes territory underlain by Cretaceous sediments and excludes the southern portion of the Province, where Tertiary beds underlie the surface and are exposed to an extent sufficient to permit a measure of systematic mapping.

"In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. Typical concentrations are in the range 50 ppm Mg and 500 ppm Ca (Marticorena et al., 1994, Basilio et al., 1996, Negeri et al., 1997, Nesset et al., 1998)."

Monitoring of movements, if sufficiently early, may also permit operators either to avert potential failures or to develop alternative approaches to extraction.The Falconbridge organization has been a leader both in the uses of rock mass stability monitoring techniques and in the development of instrumentation.In this paper, the authors review the Falconbridge approaches to monitoring, and present case history examples to illustrate the application of the various instruments used.RESUMELa surveillance des conditions de stabilité dans les mines souter-raines permet aux chefs d'enterprises d'évaluer les réactions de la masse rocheuse aux méthodes d'extraction minière. "In the past decade, there have been many developments in processing of nickel/copper sulfide ores. Improved pentlandite/pyrrhotite flotation selectivity with the use of new reagents, fine regrinding and Redox measurement (control) has led to increased pyrrhotite rejection and thus higher concentrate grades. Flash flotation has increased overall nickel and associated precious group metal recoveries. Recovery of both fine and coarse particles has been improved through an understanding of flotation cell hydrodynamics. The separation of copper from nickel in such ores has seen a similar level of development. From the late 80s to very recently, the use of flotation columns, the use of pyrrhotite depressing reagents and the improved understanding of the complex mineralogy of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite have considerably increased copper / nickel separation efficiency. Copper concentrate with more than 30% copper and less than 0.5% nickel grade is now obtainable at 80-85% copper recovery from mill feed compared to 70-75% copper recovery with 30% copper and 1% nickel grade only a few years ago. Improved copper / nickel separation in milling operations has the potential to substantially improve the processing of the resulting concentrates and thus the overall return from the extraction of nickel and copper from sulfide ores.INTRODUCTIONNickel metal by itself or in alloys with other metals and materials makes a significant contribution to modern society. The relatively high price that nickel commands compared to other base metals is a reflection of the fact that, although abundant in the universe, nickel is sparingly distributed in the earth’s crust. There are two types of nickel deposits that are currently being exploited: complex sulfide ores and lateritic oxide ores. Lateritic contain no copper but in sulfide deposits, nickel– bearing minerals, principally pentlandite (Pn, [Ni,Fe]8S9), some millerite (NiS) and violarite ([Ni,Fe]S) are often found in association with copper-bearing minerals, mainly chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2) and cubanite (CuFe2S3). The copper content of such ores can vary considerably from as high as 5-8% (in some Sudbury basin ores) to as low as 0.1% (in ores mined by Western Mining at Mount Keith, Western Australia and by Inco in Thompson, Manitoba). The valuable minerals Pn and Cp are almost invariably found associated with pyrrhotite (Po, Fe7S8) which along with nonsulphide rock has to be rejected to tails in the primary milling stage. The bulk concentrate from the primary stage is then treated to depress Pn and float Cp. A complete Cu/Ni separation at the mill would be highly desirable but this is not possible because of locking between a small fraction of the valuable minerals. As a result, Cu/Ni separation has to be carried out both during milling and during refining of the matte following smelting. At Inco, Jinchuan and in Norilsk, a chalcocite / heazlewoodite separation is made by flotation following slow cooling of the matte. In the present Sudbury Inco operations, Cu/Ni separation has not been conducted at the mill since 1991 and all Cu/Ni separation takes place at the matte processing plant. Because of the rising ratio of Cu to Ni in the ore, this strategy is under review and this paper describes some recent studies of circuits in preparation for possible installation of a copper / nickel separation circuit at Inco’s Clarabelle Mill in the Sudbury area."

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. (Peñoles) in Mexico, is a major silver producer. The Peñoles Mining Division has eight Mining Operations and in seven of them, flotation is used to concentrate the metal and mineral values. Common metals and minerals values are: metallic gold and silver, gold-silver alloys, silver sulphide minerals (acantite, pyrargirite, argentite, proustite); lead sulphide mineral, galena; zinc sulphide mineral, sphalerite; and copper sulphide minerals (chalcopyrite and bornite).In the last years, a special emphasis has been given to using modal analysis to identify ore mineralogical limitations, in order to direct efforts into key areas where opportunities exist to improve the metallurgical results.This work aims to share Peñoles mineralogical and metallurgical results, through presenting, discussing and drawing conclusions on these results; as well as pointing out areas where more work is needed to improve the Concentrator´ performance.PEÑOLES BACKGROUNDPeñoles´s mission is to add value to non-renewable natural resources on a sustainable manner. "Over the last few years, a multi-faceted feasibility study has been evaluating the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell-powered equipment into underground mines to replaced diesel engine-powered equipment. The analysis has shown that under normal operating conditions fuel cells could at the very least be an environmental and health benefit by eliminating combustion engines and their unwanted by-products. However, they could also generate significant reductions in the amount of ventilation a mine needs to supply when compared to dieselized operations; this would further decrease a mine’s energy consumption, its associated greenhouse gas impact, and also reduce a mine’s significant ventilation-associated costs. Fuel cell-powered equipment also has the advantage of lower noise and heat production compared to its equivalent diesel-powered counterpart.The degree to which fuel cells can generate ventilation benefits in underground mines depends upon a number of operational parameters and mine specific qualifiers such as current ventilation control or management, mine depth, inherent dust conditions, and minimum velocity requirements.However, another major consideration in the introduction of fuel cells in underground mines will be the safety requirements associated with diluting and removing the potentially explosive hydrogen in the event of a gas leak. In outside surface applications, it is possible to use dispersion, buoyancy, time, and lack of ignition sources as mitigating factors in deriving a low risk of an explosion. However, in underground operations, these factors change, and dispersion and buoyancy are limited; time may not be available and, in non-coal mines, ignition sources are not typically controlled. When a hydrogen leak occurs, the availability of sufficient ventilation to dilute and effectively remove the gas will be critical. Consequently, ventilation may be the prime risk controlling factor. In this paper, the authors evaluate the potential benefits of replacing diesel engines with fuel cells in powered production equipment, discuss the mitigating qualifiers that could limit ventilation savings, and evaluate solutions to retain and maintain an additional ventilation capacity in the event of an emergency situation, such as a hydrogen leak from the fuel cell stack or its distribution system."

This paper deals with an occurrence of radium ore near Wilberforce, Haliburton county, Ontario, upon which development work has recently been undertaken and which seems more likely to prove of commercial grade than any other deposit' of radioactive minerals hitherto found in Canada. This occurrence is sometimes called the Richardson property, after Mr. W. M. Richardson, the discoverer, and will be so referred to in the present paper. Occurrences of radioactive minerals are not uncommon in eastern Canada, and a number are recorded in the literature. The earliest of such references is probably that in Geology of Canada, 1863, where is mentioned an occurrence of uraninite at Mamainse, on the east shore of lake Superior. The mineral was first described by J. L. Leconte, in 1847, under the name of coracite, and was said to occur in a two-inch vein at the contact of trap and syenite. Search for this locality in recent years has proved unsuccessful. Obalski, in 1894, mentions (1) the occurrence of uraninite at a mica mine near Murray Bay, Que. In 1903, Obalski records (2) tests made on this uraninite by Rutherford and the Curies and the determination in it of the then newly-discovered element radium. In 1901, he mentions (3) the occurrence of uraninite at the Villeneuve mica mine, on the Lievre river, and of samarskite at the Maisonneuve mica mine, in Berthier county.

"The design of conveyor belting for use in mines poses problems to the manufacturer that are unique. The challenge to be met is that of the production of a conveyor belt which can withstand use and misuse in an environment that may differ vastly from one country to another, and even between one mine and its neighbour.The development of a product to meet such varying requirements necessitates a protracted program of trials, both in the laboratory and in the field; a new successful development, the only criterion, can be said to have been achieved only after very long-term usage under actual, deliberately chosen, arduous mining conditions.New developments in conveyor belt construction can never stop, no more than can developments in new and advanced mining techniques. A new problem is set-an answer must be found. "A preliminary evaluation, based on existing data, has been made of the implications of placing radium-barium sludge in tailings areas. The study was restricted to a consideration of possible increases in the quantities of radionuclides escaping to the environment through either groundwater or surf ace water, considering the types of tailings treated and the effluent treatment systems currently operating in Canada.IntroductionIn the recovery of uranium from ore deposits, the tailings produced by mine/mill complexes are conveyed to impoundment areas in slurry form. After settling, the supernatant is discharged to the environment together with runoff from precipitation on the tailings bas in. Currently, all operating uranium mines in Canada employ barium chloride treatment to control the release of dissolved radium to the aquatic environment. The dissolved radium in the tailings decant is precipitated with barium chloride, forming (Ra,Ba)SO4, and allowed to settle in ponds or lakes. In some instances, settling tanks have replaced ponds and flocculants have been added to aid settling. Because the Atomic Energy Control Board does not consider the precipitation ponds to be suitable for final disposal of these sludges, acceptable sites must be found. Options which have been suggested for sludge management include underground placement either in worked-out mine areas or in special chambers, or placement in the tailings areas. Conceptually, the latter alternative is attractive and probably would minimize sludge handling. This alternative would be subject to the AECB policy which requires that upon abandonment, radioactive releases from a tailings area must be within present regulatory limits and that treatment to meet these limits should not be required in perpetuity.No quantitative data exist concerning either the effect of physical and chemical conditions in the tailings on resolubilization of radium from precipitated sludges or the fraction of this additional radium which would be released."
