The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

King Island is situated at the western approach of Bass Strait and approximately mid way between Victoria and Tasmania. The scheelite orebodies lie within the south east of the island. Ore bearing horizons from 10 m to 40 m thick occur in south and east dipping stratiform deposits. The orebodies occur in skarn formed by contact metasomatic replacement of carbonate rocks by granite intrusives. The scheelite is deposited as fine disseminated grains in and along the margins of andradite garnets in the skarn. King Island Scheelite operates two under- ground mines from which 350 000 tonnes per year are obtained. The Dolphin mine produces almost two-thirds of the total. See Figure 1. The Dolphin orebody lies beneath the sea and an area of reclamation. The orebody is inter- sected by zones of major dislocation. A chequerboard post pillar cut and fill stoping system has been chosen to provide the necessary support to the hanging wall. Because the stability of the pillars is critical to the economic welfare of the mine, considerable attention is given to the reduction of overbreak.

High levels of contamination (non magnetics) were present in the magnetite medium of the D.M. cyclone circuit. Attempts were made to minimise the amount of undersize (-lmm) material in the D.M. cyclone feed by improving initial desliming and examining those factors that contributed to any overall reduction in desliming efficiency. Circuit density control was improved and a system of continuous contamination monitoring implemented. A brief description is included of the major alterations to circuit control philosophy. The significant improvement in overall D.M. cyclone circuit performance is outlined.

The presence of arsenic in solutions which result from the processing of many sulphide minerals leads to a need to understand its speciation in aqueous systems and the reactions of those various species. This paper deals in particular with the precipitation of arsenic from aqueous solution in the form of insoluble inorganic compounds in order to remove arsenic from various hydrometallurgical process streams. The solubility and stability of the precipitates is examined. It has been found that many of the arsenic compounds presently used are more soluble than previously accepted and unstable in disposal sites such as tailings ponds.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

The problem of manufacturing from sulphuric 'acid and Christmas Igland "A" phosphate, superphosphate of acceptable physical condition and agronomic phosphate availability, is directly related- to the crystallisation of a reac- tion product, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate. Two solutions to the problem, vacuum drying the superphosphate and calcination of the ore before reaction with acid, are discussed.

Geological studies and satellite imagery of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Northeastern Australia, have shown that the significant structural controls are a series of major North East/South West (NE/SW) trending structures, which can be traced as lineaments on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA-AVHRR) imagery as well as on both Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. These linea- ments can be traced offshore and into the Coral Sea by the distribution of offshore reefs and the bathymetery of the Queensland Shelf and the Queensland and Marion Plateaus. The seismic activity in Eastern Queensland seems to be divided into two distinct provinces separated by a seismically quiet area. This apparent seismically quiet area is bounded by two of the large lineaments seen on the satellite imagery. These features could be related to the deep crustal structure of Eastern Queensland and to the opening of the Coral Sea.

The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

The Knelson Concentrator is a centrifugal gold concentrator developed in Canada, which utilises the combination of high gravitational ("G") forces and a unique fluidising action to efficiently recover free gold particles from minus 6 mm to fine micron gold in both alluvial and hardrock applications.Operating parameters including water requirements, fluidising pressures and feed rates are given, as well as an indication of their various effects on gold recovery.Results include a Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) report comparing the Knelson concentrator with various other gravity concentrators.

The solubility of nickel in matte smelt- ing slags, both as oxide and in the metallic form, is predicted using the results of a recent experimental work carried out with lime- free iron silicate slags as well as slags containing lime. Predicted solubilities are much lower than the nickel content of smelting slags, indicating that entrapped and possibly dissolved matte could be the major cause of nickel losses in such slags.

This paper describes the use of modelling and simulation techniques in the analysis of the heavy medium plant at the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The objective of the study is to determine how to increase heavy medium plant recovery at a higher than current rejection rate in order to achieve the desired throughput through the grinding and flotation sections of the concentrator. Three options were considered: 1. Install smaller aperture preparation on screen to enable the cyclones to be fed finer materials. Install smaller diameter cyclones. 3. Mining regulatory authorities worldwide mandate frequent inspection of winder ropes used in shaft-equipped underground mines and ski lifts. Visual inspections are effective in identifying and assessing the type and severity of damage found in the exterior of the rope. In addition, electromagnetic or permanent magnet-based methods are used to identify broken wires, corrosion damage and other anomalies that occur anywhere within the core of wire ropes made of steel, which is a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic methods yield the loss of metallic area due to wire breaks and other damage in the ropeÆs section as well as local flaws that give rise to discontinuities in the magnetic field. The quantitative measurement of the loss of metallic area is indirectly related to the loss of breaking strength that is commonly used as a rope discard criterion. The ropes used in a mine winder in the Goldfields of Western Australia are inspected using Meraster 120B permanent magnet-based rope tester and their condition is assessed against published discard criteria.

Delay scatter, although widely recognised, has rarely been studied with the aim of critically reviewing blast designs. With current trends towards increased deck charging, and the effect on the number of separate delays in blast designs, delay scatter is shown to have a rather profound influence on the control of initiation sequence and the ability to successfully con- duct pre-splitting and smooth blasting. Determination of realistic delay scatter distributions is the first step towards application to blast design. Delay scatter must be evaluated in terms of deviation from the nominal time, not in terms of deviation from the batch mean, since the latter is not usually known without specific testing, requiring accurate timing instrumentation. Computer programs using Monte Carlo simulation can then be developed to investigate the probabilities of out-of-sequence initi- ation or near-simultaneous initiation within any specified interval. The procedures have been applied to both production and development blast designs in Australia and Chile to improve initiation sequence control and to rationalise and simplify blast designs.
