The results of drilling in Missouri in 1938 are overshadowed by the leasing activity in northern Missouri, which began about the middle of the year. Nothing like it has ever been witnessed by the oil industry. With no production except a minor amount of gas, and with no drilling except in Clay, Platte and Marion Counties, a leasing campaign has embraced most of the counties north of the Missouri River and spread into southern Iowa, southeastern Nebraska and northeastern Kansas. It is reported that nearly all farms that could be leased without payment of a bonus have been leased, mostly on 10-yr. contracts, and at the end of the year a policy of bonus paying is in effect. Many of the major oil companies are leasing in the area and at least 15 of them are represented by scouts. Similarity to the Illinois Basin, low-priced leases and low drilling costs are among the reasons advanced for the leasing activity. Drilling activity in Missouri increased nearly two-thirds over 1937, with a total of 164 completions. The main activity was the extension of the "shoestring" of the so-called Bartlesville gas pool in Jackson County. It now seems that this sand is probably at the horizon of the Burbank sand. A new Squirrel sand oil pool was discovered in Jackson County. Cass County had five oil wells, with 63 bbl. initial production, four gas wells with 542,000 cu. ft. initial open flow, and 15 dry holes. Jackson County had three oil wells, with 24 bbl. initial production, 56 gas wells with 52,021,168 cu. ft. initial open flow and 57 dry holes. In Vernon County seven oil wells, with about 36 bbl. initial production, and two dry holes were completed. The oil production dropped off very quickly. In counties where wildcatting was carried on, new production was found. Clay County had seven dry holes, Hickory and Marion one each; Platte, four and St. Clair, two.

The first edition of this book appeared in 1877 and approximately twenty years later (1898) the second and revised edition was published. Now, again after more than twenty years, comes the third edition. The changes involved in the present edition are chiefly those of addition, the general character and form of the book having been retained unchanged. In the section on Crystallography the important change consists in the introduction of the methods employed in the use of the stereographic and gnomonic pro¬jections. A considerable portion of the section on the Optical Characters of Minerals has been rewritten in the endeavor to make this portion of the book simpler and more readily understood by the student. In the section on Descriptive Mineralogy all species described since the previous edition have been briefly mentioned in their proper places. Numerous other changes and corrections have, of course, been made in order to embody the results of mineral investigation during the last two decades. Only minor changes have been made in the order of classification of the mineral species. It was felt that as this book is so closely related to the System of Mineralogy it was unwise to attempt any revision of the chemical classification until a new edition of that work should appear. The description of the methods of Crystal Drawing given in Appendix A has been largely rewritten. A new table has been added to Appendix B in which the minerals have been grouped into lists according to their important basic elements. Throughout the book the endeavor has been to present in a clear and concise way all the information needed by the elementary and advanced student of the science. The editor of this edition is indebted especially to the published and un¬published writings of the late Professor Samuel L. Penfield for much ma¬terial and many figures that have been used in the sections of Crystallog¬raphy and The Optical Character of Minerals. He also acknowledges the cordial support and constant assistance given him by Professor Edward S. Dana.

Spots Goblenski fluffed up his pork chop sideburns, checked the angle of his wide brim Stetson and ambled off the airplane. The pert Braniff hostess stood smartly at the door. "Goodbye now, take care," she said in the special airline stewardess voice superimposed on a Texas drawl. Spots smirked, "You betcha, Peaches, you too." It was a crystal clear, sunny day which New York can have at any season of the year (but rarely gets credit for) and being in high spirits Spots did not mind being captured by a cab driver. That is the cab driver brushed aside all other conversation to give a continuous colorful commentary on New York politics, revealing in the process that only the very wealthy and cab drivers share the same political views in that city. After installing himself in the fading opulence of the Hotel Roosevelt, he finished the day with a steak dinner with baked potato under sour cream and hearts of lettuce salad with Roquefort dressing at the Black Angus restaurant. The next morning he had an appointment with Hemphill, Frye and Louderdock. The offices of this prestigious firm of management consultants are high in the Pan Am Building. He was courteously received by a lacquered receptionist and was soon escorted into the presence of Mr. John Smith. "Ah, Mr. Goblenski; Spots, isn't it? Hope you had a good flight. Lovely weather we are having. Just make yourself comfortable over there, Spots." Smith seemed cordial and Spots slipped comfortably into the interview. He had always thought that management consultants were evolved from the "efficiency experts" made famous by the radio team, Amos and Andy. He associated the modern version with computers, PERT and other systems approaches. He was surprised that one of these firms was apparently acting as an employment agency. "Of course" continued Smith, "in evaluation of basic criteria of performance moduli, the human element enters, Spots, and that brings us to you." Spots sat up and focused his attention.

'This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. At the meeting of the Board of Directors of this Institute on Feb. 16, 1915, the 14 members of the Board present unanimously elected Professor Kemp an Honorary Member. The nomination of Professor Kemp was signed by 21 members of the Institute, none of whom are members of the Board of Directors, and recited his qualifications for Honorary Membership in the following terms: Professor Kemp graduated from Amherst College in the class of 1881, and from the School of Mines, Columbia University, in the class of 1884. After serving as instructor in geology in Cornell University for a few years he was called back to Columbia as adjunct professor in 1891, was made full professor the following year, and has since filled that office with dignity and honor. Among the first to recognize they importance of igneous rocks in the formation of orebodies, his studies have contributed greatly to that increase of knowledge of economic geology in which the Transactions of the Institute has had an influential part, and he is recognized both abroad and in this country as one of the most distinguished scholars in geology which America has produced. This recognition is evident in the honorary degrees of Sc. D. conferred on him by Amherst College in 1906, and LL. D. conferred by McGill University in 1913, as well as by election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of. Christiania, and the Geological Society of. Stockholm. Professor Kemp was a Manager of the American Institute of Mining Engineers from 1896 to 1898, Vice-President from 1903 to 1904, a Director from 1905 to 1912, President and President of the Board of Directors in 1912, and Past President since that time. During these years he has labored loyally for the upbuilding of the Institute, serving on many committees, as well as in the offices enumerated. He has also served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and on the governing board of the Geological Society of America and the New York Botanical Gardens. His service is not confined, however, to these labors for the good of the profession and his contributions to exact knowledge of geology. In his almost 25 years as a professor in Columbia University there have come under his influence a great group of young men in whom he has inspired unflagging zeal in the search for truth, and to whom he has set an example of unselfish service. The value of such a service cannot be overestimated and in electing him to Honorary Membership the Institute would officially recognize the measure of appreciation which his professional colleagues have long accorded to him.

LIGHTWEIGHT aggregates have been in use for many years in the United States but are now receiving more and more attention by manufacturers and users of concrete shapes. These shapes comprise building blocks, special forms, such as door sills, lintels, floor slabs, and beams. Lightweight aggregate also is adapted for monolithic construction. The increased building activity since termination of the war, together with the widespread shortage of cinders resulting from a general trend toward the use of oil and pulverized-coal fuels, has aggravated the situation. In some localities? new producers of lightweight aggregates have been stimulated to increased efforts to supply the demand. In addition, various estab- lishments of the United States Government have recently given attention to this problem. The National Bureau of Standards, in the Commerce Department, and the Bureau of Reclamation, in the Interior Department, have completed a series of tests on concretes made from some of the available commercial aggregates in order to evaluate their qualities. The tests have been made to focus attention on the desirable properties of good aggregates. This work was done at the request of the Technical Office of the National Housing Agency and Housing and Home Finance Agency. Some time previously, the former office had conducted a survey of the locations where lightweight aggregates are produced.' A study of this information discloses that the producing centers are widespread and that certain areas, notably the region east of the Mississippi River and especially the southeastern states in the sections along the Atlantic Coast, have only a limited number of such plants. The situation has been alleviated to some extent with new plants having been erected near Richmond, Va., and Lansford, Pa. Experiment Stations of the Federal Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., Norris, Tenn., and College Park, Md., have investigated types and sources of potential raw materials such as clays, shales, and slates, as well as methods and procedures for utilizing these materials for their conversion into aggregates, and have published the data as a Bureau of Mines report.' Structural Uses of Lightweight Aggregates: Production of masonry blocks in the United States has averaged close to a billion units a year for the past three years, and of these it is estimated that more than 40 pct consisted of the lightweight type. It is anticipated that the future will witness an increase in this percentage in view of the superior insulating properties, decrease in dead weight, and ease of handling, transporting, and laying units of this type. Lightweight aggregates are used extensively in multistoried buildings in which the weight of the walls and floors is carried by a structural steel framework. The substitution of a lightweight concrete for normal concrete in a building of this type has brought about in many instances some or all of the following advantages:

PROFESSOR HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. :-This paper of Mr. Sauveur's is extremely interesting. It is one of those papers that one wishes to read in the quiet of one's study, where it can be read with great profit. There are many points which he makes which I think are of very great value, in particular as to the importance of getting fine ;grained graphite by a relatively rapid cooling, combined with a high percentage of silicon. That theory would seem to be very promising; how far it has actually been carried out very likely Dr. Moldenke can. tell us.

Discussion of the paper of C. F. TOLMAN, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 401 to 433. Louis C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-Of particular interest at this time is any paper that deals with chalcocite, the characteristic product of secondary enrichment and the copper mineral of greatest commercial importance, and that seeks to aid in the distinction between primary and secondary chalcocite-a distinction of much scientific and practical importance but one which thus far it has proved difficult to draw. The present paper on this subject by Professor Tolman, like the ,many preceding it which he and his colleagues at Stanford have published in the last couple of years, contains much of interest and suggestiveness. Without endeavoring at this time to review or comment upon Professor Tolman's conclusions in detail, I may say that many of them are in accord with the findings that my associates and I have been accumulating in the course of studying secondary enrichment in many of the copper deposits of the country. During 1939 oil production experienced a new and important increase in Argentina in the productive areas of Comodoro Rivadavia (Territory of Chubut), Plaza Huincul (Territory of Neuquén), and those of the. The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and low reagent cost.

ThE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va. and Mcrcer and McDowell counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4, Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305 111.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, to which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks of bone, cach from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 2.5 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficieiltly well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata arc slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from 30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No. 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the.

It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305 111.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, to which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks of bone, cach from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 2.5 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficieiltly well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata arc slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from 30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No. 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the.

Some preliminary results are given on the use of radioactive tracers for implementing the mechanistic approach to flotation. The process studied is an industrial one for the cleaning of sand for the production of glass. The radioactive tracers employed are those produced from intrinsic elements in the sand by neutron irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The results indicate that the technique will be useful for the determination of flotation simulation mechanistic model parameters on operating industrial processes without interruption of their normal operation.
