WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

Although his method will give only a rough approximation of the reserves, nevertheless it is much more reliable than the saturation method. The saturation method should not be used when any other method is available. The paper describes a generalized method, which is especially useful in estimating the total resources of a Nation or State. GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

"The Washoe Smelter is situated about two miles east of the City of Anaconda. The smelter site includes about 240 acres and peculiarly adapts itself in topography to the efficient handling of material. By reason of its being on a hill side it is possible to make the level of delivery of the product of one building the level of the charge floor of the next succeeding one.THE ORES: The ore treated comes principally from the Butte district and is hauled by the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific railway, a distance of twenty-eight miles, in trains of fifty 50-ton bottom-dump cars to the railroad yards at East Anaconda. At this point these trains are• split up according to their destination,—that is, as to whether they go to the concentrator and sampling mill ore bins, or to the storage bins. THE various methods of treating pulp in air-agitation tanks offer problems for experiment and study which are fascinating as well as practical. The usual method heretofore has been to fill each tank in turn, agitate the mixture the required period and then discharge the treated pulp into a storage-tank, from which it. is drawn to the filter as required. A later method is to run the pulp from the tube-mill, classifier, thickener, or settler into the first of a set of tanks, and thence continuously or in series through the remaining tanks, finally drawing off the pulp to a continuous filter, or to a pulp-storage tank if the filter is of the intermittent type. It is this method which I propose to discuss here in a preliminary way, with the idea of going exhaustively into the examination of the results of a series of experiments in a later paper. It may be of interest to note that the design of a cyanide-plant has recently been completed in which the estimated cost of the agitation-tanks, storage-tanks, and pumps was 30 per cent higher for the charge-agitation arrangement than for the series plan. The first question in studying the series method is, "What is the actual period of treatment undergone by the pulp?? One first supposes that by chance some of the pulp may get through with little or no treatment, while other portions may stay in the tanks a needlessly long period. The former is not probable or even possible, and the latter is, practically, true to only a limited extent. The greater the number of tanks the greater is the percentage of chance that all the pulp will be treated equally. Without going into the mathematical analysis of the problem (which is of little value, since it is based on problematical premises), its important terms may be clearly grasped by thinking of, or " visualizing," the conditions when,

Lewis E. Young, who will formally assume his duties as President of the AIME at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco in February 1949, was born in Topeka, Kansas, Oct. 1, 1878. Dr. Young received his engineering education at the Pennsylvania State College, where he received the degree of B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1900. In 1904 he received his E.M. degree from Iowa State College, and in 1915 a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. In 1947, the University of Missouri conferred on Dr. Young honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Engineering. His active career began in the educational field as instructor at Iowa State College, and following that, as professor of mining at the Colorado School of Mines, 1903-1907. While he was at Golden he launched hi: career as consulting mining engineer for various Western companies. Leaving the Colorado School of Mines, Dr. Young returned to Missouri, serving the University of Missouri as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, 1907-1914. Leaving Missouri he went to the University of Illinois as assistant professor of business organization, 1915-1918, during which period he wrote exhaustive treatises on mine subsidence and mine taxation, which won for him the degree of Ph.D. before mentioned.

The rate of oxidation of the lowest nitride of chromium, Cr2N, was measured to be equal to the rate of oxidation of chromium metal. It was found that, while the presence of Cr2N in chromium does not affect the oxidation mechanism, a long exposure at high temperature affects the morphology of Cr2N in chromium, causing a massive internal nitriding along chromium pain boundaries. Marker expen' -ments showed that the rate of oxidation of Cr2N layers on chromium is determined by the rate of chromium diffusion through Cr,03. The rate of formation of Cr2N is determined by diffusion rate of nitrogen through Cr2N. This rate at 1000°C is around thirty times faster than the rate of oxiahtion. Evidence is presented which suggests that nitrogen from the air reaches the chromium through the Cr2O9 by migration through pores or cracks rather than by a diffusive process. IT has long been recognized that, when chromium or alloys containing substantial amounts of chromium are oxidized in air, some chromium nitride (Cr2N) is formed under the oxide scale. Although the presence of this nitride layer has often been described, there appears to have been no systematic study of the role played by the nitride during the oxidation process. Indeed, there have been conflicting re-ports'92 on the kinetics of oxidation of chromium and chromium alloys in air and in oxygen. However, it is now well-established'-5 that the rate-controlling process during the parabolic oxidation of chromium to Cr2O3 is chromium-ion diffusion through Cr2O3. Because of the importance of chromium-containing alloys as oxidation-resistant materials, it seemed desirable to investigate the behavior of chromium during oxidation with and without the presence of chromium nitride. Since a semicontinuous Cr2N layer forms relatively early during the oxidation of chromium in the air, chromium atoms must either pass out of or through the Cr2N layer to become incorporated in the growing Cr2O3 scale. Therefore, it seemed desirable to examine the oxidation behavior of the pure nitride. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The chromium used in this investigation consisted of slices of an ingot made from "five-nine" iodide chromium which had been argon-atmosphere melted in a Y2O 3-stabilized ZrO2 crucible in an induction furnace. The only impurity of any significance was 625 ppm of 0, which was usually reduced to a microscopically invisible amount by hydrogen annealing at 1400°C. However, one sample of chromium was used with the as-cast oxygen level as explained below. The samples were used after abrading through 600 Sic paper and then washing in toluene and alcohol. Both nitriding and oxidation experiments were performed in a vertical tube furnace connected to a glass vacuum system. 'This system was equipped with pressure measuring instruments for the range of 10 p to 1 atm, and a cartesian-diver pressure-control device was used in conjunction with a needle valve to allow control of pressure in the range of about 10 to 760 mm. The nitrogen or hydrogen gas was purified by passing through hot copper chips at 600°C, anhydrous calcium sulfate (Drierite), and liquid nitrogen. Oxygen gas was dried through the Drierite column and a dry-ice trap (-78°C). Changes in specimen weight were followed by a Pyrex helix used in conjunction with a cathetometer which could reproducibly be read to +0.001 cm, yielding an accuracy of about +0.2 mg. THE Council of the Geological Society of America has named its gold medal after R. A. F. Penrose, Jr., who recognized the need of such an award and supplied the endowment. The medal is to be awarded for achievement in pure science and may be given to a worker of any race or nation. Mr. Penrose, whose own professional work has been mainly in applied geology, had previously established a medal fund for the Society of Economic Geologists. This was awarded to T. C. Chamberlin at the meet-ing of that Society at Cornell University in 1924. The new medal is to be given on the recommendation of the G. S. A. Council, but not necessarily every year.

THE CHAIRMAN (G. C. STONE, New York, N. Y.).-It is a matter of history that the smelting of zinc ore in, a reverberatory furnace was the first process used in this country for making oxide of zinc, and it was abandoned for three reasons: it was very expensive, the recovery was, very poor, and the color of the oxide was worse. It is probable, however, that the Anaconda company is working in a totally different way. While Mr. Ingalls does not say so, my own suspicion is that they are using coal-dust firing, very much as they do in the copper furnaces, and by that method there is much more chance of getting good recovery.

PLANS for the World's Engineering Congress in Japan are rapidly taking shape. The Congress itself will be held in Tokyo in the week beginning Oct. 30, and will be followed by a second week of short excursions to points of interest, and this, in turn, by a two weeks' excursion through the Inland Sea and to Manchuria. Aside from the time each may desire to spend in Japan, from 30 to 42 days, according to route, must be allowed for travel from New York to Tokyo and return, with correspondingly' shorter time from intermediate points. Events of the mid-1970s have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in deregulation activity. Those two events have produced considerable litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

THIS paper is a report on work undertaken to investigate the results and conclusions of Ravitz and Porter1,2 that galena freed of surface oxidation products and lead carbonate ("clean" galena) is waterrepellent, and that the action of xanthates in flotation is the action of a cleansing agent, enabling oxidized galena particles to expose a pure lead sulphide, water-repellent surface. The apparatus, in construction and use, was essentially that of Ravitz and Porter. The only significant modification introduced by the present authors was the substitution of a three-necked flask for the flotation cell as the "reaction vessel." Our procedure was to place 50 grams of freshly ground, minus 200-mesh galena in the reaction vessel, sweep out all molecular oxygen from the system with oxygen-free nitrogen, and proceed to wash the galena surface free of its oxidation products with repeated small portions of (I) ammonium acetate (500 c.c. of water, 200 grams of ammonium acetate) or (2) ammonium chloride, hydrochloric acid (2 liters containing 200 grams of ammonium chloride and 25 c.c. Of 1.18 sp. gr hydrochloric acid). The galena was next washed with many 100-c.c. portions of oxygen-free, distilled water. The galena was finally considered free of soluble salts when wash water that had been in contact with the mineral for at least 48 hr.* gave negative tests for: (x) lead ion with sulphide; (2) chloride with silver ion; (3) acetate with cuprous chloride, sodium chloride; and (4) ammonium ion with Nessler's reagent. Next 500 c.c. of potassium ethyl xanthate solution, free of dissolved oxygen, was run onto the "clean" galena particles. For this system there were determined: I. The wetting properties of the clean galena particles by shaking the reaction flask and noting the degree of mineral collection at the liquid-air interface. This was, of course, simply a qualitative test, but it proved adequate for our purpose. 2. The removal of xanthate ion from the potassium xanthate solution on being shaken with the "cleansed" mineral. Xanthate concentrations were determined by iodine titration according to the methods of Taylor and Knoll.3 3. The pH of the xanthate solution after having been shaken with the "cleansed" galena. The pH was determined colorimetrically.4 The results of five experiments of the type mentioned above are given in Table x.

AMONG the newer lead smelting and refining plants of the country is that of the United States Metals Refining Co., at Carteret, N. J. Not only is the technical practice here modern and efficient, but exceptional care is taken to assure healthful operating conditions for the employees. One large building houses the entire department, which includes, as its chief units, one reverberatory smelting furnace, one blast furnace, two softening furnaces, one utility reverberatory furnace, two Faber du Faur retorts, five 120-ton kettles, three 60-ton antimouial lead kettles, and one 5-ton kettle for experimental purposes. There is a 10-ton overhead crane in the kettle aisle, which is also used for shipping lead. Other auxiliary equipment is referred to in the outline of operations. A general plan of the plant is shown in Fig. 2, and a general view in Fig. 1. The method of mining the uranium orebody at Denison mine in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario is discussed. Details of the development of haulage-ways and rooms are giuen, as well as methods of ore haulage. The milling and beneficiation stages are noted briefly. Located in the Elliot Lake mining district of Canada, the Denison mine lies between Sudbury to the east and Sault Ste. Marie to the west, Fig. 1. This area is overlain by Huronian sediments filling a basin in the Keewatin basement complex. Subsequent folding of these sediments developed a synclinal structure, known locally as the Quirke Lake Trough, which forms the northern portion of the now famous big Z structure, the geological trademark of this region. Plunging to the west and extending nine miles from the granite outcropping in the north to the Keewatin lava contact to the south, the syncline has dips of 10" to 45" on the north limb and 10" to 20" on the south limb, Fig. 2. The Denison orebody, located on the north limb of the syncline, lies between 800 and 3000 ft below the surface. The main ore zone is within 50 ft of the Missisagi-Keewatin contact (see Fig. 3), and it varies in thickness from 6 to 32 ft. This ore zone has a composite dip of 19" to the south and is composed primarily of two pyritized conglomerate beds separated by a band of pebbly quartzite stratum. The upper conglomerate bed of the main zone varies from 2 to 15 ft in thickness, while the lower conglomerate varies from 2 to 12 ft. Over extended areas, mining is carried out over the entire section comprising the two conglomerate layers and intercalated quartzite; in other areas, the conglomerates are selectively mined, depending on the thickness of the quartz-ite. The ore zone contains approximately 6 pct sulfides and 80 pct silica. The predominant uranium-bear ing minerals are brannerite, uraninite, and an unidentified mineral (probably thucolite). Some of the uneconomic metallic minerals identified to date are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. MINE LAYOUT Shafts: Underground exploration and development (Fig. 4) were performed through two shafts 1/2 mile apart. The No. 1 shaft, sunk to a depth of 1856 ft with the main station established at the 1600-ft ore level, is a 250-sq ft, 5-compartment shaft capable of handling 4500 tpd. Two 5x5-1/2-ft compartments serviced by a 12-ft diam double-drum hoist, are used for hoisting 190-cu-ft bottom-dump skips in balance. A 30-man cage, offset by a counterbalance, operates within a 5-1/2x11-1/2-ft compartment. The fifth compartment is used as a manway, pipe, and cable-way. This shaft is also provided with an intermediate pumping station used during the initial mining phase as well as loading-pocket and spill-pocket installations and pumping facilities. The 480-sq ft No. 2 shaft, located down-dip from No. 1 shaft, has a 2776-ft depth. Serving as the main hoisting shaft with a maximum capacity of 9000 tpd, it has eight compartments, four of which are used for hoisting ore in 10-ton capacity bottom-dump skips. These four compartments, measuring 5x6-ft in section, are serviced by two 12-ft diam double-drum semi-automatic hoists. A 50-man cage is operated in a 15x8-ft compartment, and it is counterbalanced by a 12-ton weight. Two compartments are used for ventilation, manway, electric cables, and pipes. Electrical double-layer properties of the silver sulfide-solution interface in different electrolytes and the influence the properties exert on the adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) were studied using an electrochemical titration technique. The flotation behavior of silver sulfide was observed using DAA as collector and the results were correlated with adsorption measurements. Silver and sulfide ions were identified as the potential determining ions and their adsorption densities were measured as functions of the pAg and of the ionic strength at two different pH values. The point-of-zero-charge (PZC) was observed to be at pAg 10.2, the value being independent of pH and of the nature and concentration of the electrolyte used. The surface charge of silver sulfide in these electrolytes was positive for pAg values less than 10.2 and was negative for pAg values greater than 10.2. The adsorption of amine on silver sulfide surfaces at pH 4.7 was found to be strongly dependent on the pAg. A shift in the PZC towards a lower pAg due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion towards silver sulfide surfaces. At pH 9.2 a strong adsorption of the undissociated amine molecule was indicated. The PZC shift towards a higher pAg and the adsorption of the amine was virtually independent of the interfacial electrical conditions.

The rapid increase in reliability, the low cost of operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made. For a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of. such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the re-crystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would he of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth4 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 65s°C. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutec-tic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653'C. Preparation and Chemical Analysis oP Alloys Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity alumi-num-iron alloy (11.45 Pet iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The aIlalyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). QUANTITATIVE applications of the electron micro-beam probe frequently involve the evaluation of complex mathematical expressions and/or the analysis of large amounts of experimental data. The purpose of this communication is to describe briefly a versatile and useful computer program system that is applicable to analyze rapidly a wide variety of practical microprobe problems. This system consists of a group of ten FORTRAN programs that can be stored on tape, cards, or in the memory disc of the computer. These programs, or links, can be run individually or in any prespecified sequence without interrupting the operation of the computer or without destroying information which is being transfered from one link to another. For the program system described here a GE-235 computer with disc storage was used, so that the DCHAIN method of program linking was employed. Included in the library are programs to: 1) initiate analysis of a new set of data and transfer control between all other programs in any predetermined manner; 2) generate theoretical calibration curves of composition vs relative intensity; 3) generate empirical deviation parameters from least-square fits of experimental calibration data from standards of known composition; 4) convert raw X-ray data to corrected composition; 5) determine inter diffusion coefficients by Matano analysis of con centrat ion -distance data on a uniaxial diffusion couple; 6) determine activation energies and frequency factors of temperature-activated processes such as diffusion; and 7) generate calibration curves for determination of the thickness of thin films using microanalysis. A detailed description of these computer programs and their underlying principles is available on request from the authors."' The first program to generate theoretical calibration curves of corrected relative intensities vs composition uses the Poole and Thomas atomic number correction' and the Philibert absorption factor' with a voltage-dependent mass absorption coefficient for electrons in the alloy. A modified Castaing fluores- cence correction is also used which includes the effects of both Ka and KO radiation and over voltage.' Once the theoretical curves have been calculated in 1 wt pct intervals, these results are least-squares fit to obtain Ziebold deviation parameters' which are stored in COMMON in the computer memory. The net discrepancies between the original theoretical calibration curve and the regenerated curve using the Ziebold parameter are computed. Although this link is explicitly written for K-K fluorescent interactions, it can be applied to K-L, L-K, and L-L interactions as previously disc~ssed."~ Similar programs have also been written to utilize the Wittry fluorescence correction, Birks combined corrections, and various other corrections.' These modified programs have proved to be quite useful for quantitative comparisons of the results of the various theories. The program for conversion of raw X-ray data to corrected composition includes corrections for drift, backround, and instrumental dead time. The corrected intensities are converted to composition by use of the Ziebold equation"2 and parameter obtained from the program system. The results can be obtained for either atom or weight fractions. In addition to accurately computing interdiffusion coefficients the Matano analysis program calculates least-square smoothed values of concentration, concentration gradient, and curvature for each point on the raw input concentration profile. In order to obtain high accuracies a unique method of performing a least-square polynomial fit to incrementally advancing profile segments which overlap is used.' This program has been successfully modified for use in ternary diffusion problems3 and can readily be modified to handle analysis of diffusion profiles which include phase boundary discontinuities. This link is generally applicable to analysis of interdiffusion data obtained by other techniques as well as by the microprobe. The primary function of the next program is to least-squares fit experimental diffusion data to the normal Arrhenius function: D = Doexp(-Q/RT), to obtain values of Do and Q. In addition the probable error and one, two, and three u statistical confidence limits of DO, Q, and log D are evaluated. This program is also directly useful for analysis of any other simple temperature-activated processes including conductivity, and certain deformation and chemical processes. The program to generate calibration curves for film-thickness determination using the microprobe is based on a numerical integration of the equation derived by Cockett and ~avis.' Values of film thickness obtained by this program for copper on various substrates are in good agreement with measurements made by other techniques. Versions of the above program system have been prepared for use with or without a remote teletype connection to the computer for processing on either a real-time or time-share basis. The instrumentation coupling a microprobe to a teletype for automatic data collection and analysis by the presently described program system has been reported elsewhere by the authors.' If teletype equipment is not used to communicate with the computer, standard methods of card reading and tape reading can be used. In either
