TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-The following report covers briefly some of the more important activities of the Institute during the year 1923. In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923. Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business. For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls. During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I. M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American countries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership. Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask-for reinstatement. Having stated the darkest side of the picture first, it may now be drawn to your attention that in spite of these losses the number of persons applying for membership was decidedly encouraging.

INVESTIGATORS in the areas of plasticity, crystal growth, and stress analysis have a need for crys-tallographic data such as the interplanar angles. This information is utilized in the form of a stereo-graphic projection from which orientation determinations can be made. Calculations of mechanical properties, such as the critical resolved shear stress, require values for the angles between directions as well as the interplanar angles. Only a limited amount of this data is available for tetragonal crystals. The equations for these angles are relatively simple but because of the large numbers of angles involved and the infinite number of structures that could be investigated, it was decided to program these calculations on a high speed digital computer. A full-scale operational test was conducted on the Coaltek preheating and pipeline charging system at the Semet-Solvay Div. of Allied Chemical at Ironton, Ohio, for the purpose of determining whether a high-quality blast furnace coke could be made from blends containing at least 75% Illinois No. 6 Coal and at the same time reduce air pollution during the charging of the ovens. The coke produced had similar physical characteristics as compared to our conventional wet-charged coke, with the exception of smaller size for the preheat coke. Air pollution during charging was con- trolled and there were no serious operating problems. The coking time was reduced 25% from our normal 17 hr for wet charging to 12.8 hr for preheated charges. The blast furnace performance with preheat coke was satisfactory.

Two methods for the rapid valuation of oil properties are in common use. The one best known and most widely used is the "per barrel" value, based on the present daily production of the well, without regard to its past performance or the history of the sand or pool from which it produces. The second method is the "time to pay out," or the length of time required for a well to place itself upon the credit side of the ledger, from which time the returns from its production (less the operating expenses) will be clear profit. The time basis for valuation is also commonly used in the appraisal of an undeveloped lease. In most oil fields, it is not thought good business to invest in production that will not pay out in at least 4 to 5 years. Nearly all buyers (except in certain regions of very persistent production like the deep-sand territory of the Appalachian field) expect wells to pay out in considerably less time than this. Like the barrel per day price, the time necessary for a well to pay out has been determined for each field, so that one frequently hears a field or district referred to as having a certain time to pay out. This is considered the norm for that field or district and the buyer and seller base their value, to greater or less extent, on their belief in the accuracy of this time. The writer long ago became convinced of the inaccuracy of the barrel per day method, except when greatly modified for local conditions, such as the age of the wells, their economic limit, operating conditions in the field, the future price of oil, and the persistence of the sand as a producer. When so modified, this method becomes more of an analytic or predicted probable yield valuation. While the appraiser may not go through each step in a valuation based on future returnable revenue, his knowledge of the field and the local conditions surrounding his leases make it possible for him to estimate a fair sales value that, in many cases, will be a close approximation to the truth. This is quite different from the commonly understood barrel per day value, in that the conditions surrounding the sale of one lease or property at a fair market value may

The early development of the reverberatory furnace for smelting copper-ores was the work of the Welsh smelters, particularly those of Swansea. The first record of a reverberatory furnace is made by Jars, who states that in 1755 copper-smelting was effected .in reverberatory furnaces at Middleton-Tyas, in Yorkshire, England. The first patent, of any importance, for improvements in reverberatory furnaces was granted to Thomas Williams in 1778 for the granulation of the regulus. The next was that of William Evetts, in Sheffield, in 1812, for the cooling of the fire-bridge by the admission of air. Charge-hoppers above the furnaces were in common use in 1848. The size of the hearth of the furnaces about the beginning of the 19th century was commonly 11 by 8 feet. No material development was made until the Welsh process mas brought to Colorado, where Richard Pearce, as manager of the Argo works, near Denver, developed the furnace to meet the requirements of a custom plant, under keen competition with lead-silver smelting-plants, using blast-furnaces. His improvements are outlined in Fig. 1, elaborated by permission from E. D. Peters's excellent work,' to which the reader is referred for further details. This figure shows that the furiiaces were in 1878, 9 ft. 8 in. by 15 ft. in hearth; and in 1894, 16 by 35 ft., while the capacity of the furnace had been increased from 12 tons per 24 hr. to 50 tons in the same period.

Six months out of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut down a multi-million dollar plant besieged with -40°F temperatures and a 40 mph wind. It takes only one man-door improperly latched to feeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later, the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Some important things must be remembered in plant design for cold and remote areas. For one thing, everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore be kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas, on the other hand, must be adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles, for instance, have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50°F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze UP.

DURING the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-clay to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes : The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddies and round tables on the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

Rockbolting and dowelling are important methods of ground control. Their effectiveness depends upon the compatibility of the support members and the geotechnical behaviour of the rock mass. Detailed geotechnical investigations are, therefore, necessary for the design of effective rockbolting systems. The study described in the paper was concerned with improving the effectiveness of ground control at Mount Isa Mine. The paper briefly reviews the design methods avail- able when choosing a rockbolting system with a view to identifying the most suitable method. Joint surveys were used for the geotechnical assessment of rock mass stability. These were interpreted with the aid of the stereographic technique of predicting the size and shape of potentially unstable blocks of rock in both the roof and side walls of excavations. The geology and ground conditions at Mount Isa are briefly described together with the current ground control techniques. The requirements for ground control have been investigated at representative sites by analysing typical modes of rock failure and using a geological predictive technique. An application of this technique to the selection of a support system in a shallow Coal Measures tunnel is also described. The paper concludes with a general discussion on the effectiveness of this method of site investigation for the appraisal of rockbolting support in mining and civil engineering excavations.

As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.

Various semiempirical equations which relate defect-formation energies and entropies with elastic and thermal properties of a metal crystal are shown to be related by a simple model for lattice energy. An illustrative comparison of theory with experiment is made using self-diffilsion data for fee metals. SEVERAL workers have related the free energy of defect formation with elastic and thermal properties of a crystal lattice, particularly elastic bulk modulus and Debye temperature. The present note shows how the various approaches are related by a simple model for lattice energy. A comparison of theory with experiment is given using the self-diffusion parameters of fee metals. 1) A MODEL OF THE CRYSTAL LATTICE The internal energy per atom in a metallic lattice may be written U=Ui-Ue [1] where Ui and Ue refer to ion-ion interaction and valence electron energies, respectively. Results and experimental procedures are presented covering a preliminary laboratory investigation of the compaction of reservoir rocks and its effect on porosity and permeability. "Egective" compressibility was measured by subjecting core material to an overburden load and reducing pore pressure. Preliminary results showed relatively high effective compressibilities which varied from 1.8 X 10-' pore volume/pore volume /lb / in.~ for limestones to 7.7 X 10-6 pore volume/pore volume/lb/in.' and even higher for sandstone reservoirs conmining large amounts of fine clay material. It appeared from the initiol results that the effective compressibility of the material could not be correlated directly with porosity and that other factors, such as the amount of clay material present might have to be taken into account. The work to date has indicated that effective compressibility factors will have to be measured for the particular reservoirs heing studied. Oil permeability of core materid was measured under various effective overburden loads from 0 to 8,000 psi. It has been found than reduction of permeability in clean sands was relatively small and the results agreed with published data. For sandstones containing large amounts of clay, preliminary tests indicated very large reductions in permeability with increasing effective overburden pressures. It is planned to continue laboratory work on this phase because of its importance in low-permeability reservoirs. INTRODUCTION During the past few years increasing interest has been shown in the differences obtained between conventional laboratory measurements on cores at atmospheric pressure and those when reservoir conditions are simulated. Since these data are used as the basis for calculations and the prediction of reservoir behavior, their evaluation under reservoir conditions is most important. The effect of the compressibility of the rock upon the reservoir behavior, as fluid pressure declines, is an important subject which has been insufficiently studied. The total pressure on any plane through a reservoir is the result of the grain-to-grain rock pressure due to the overburden and the pressure of the interstitial fluid on the plane. As reservoir fluid pressure declines, the net load on the rock phase must increase, and the result is the compaction of the rock structure which produces a decrease in pore volume. Simultaneously, the rock grains expand into the pore space as the fluid pressure declines. The result of these two effects is defined as the effective compressibility of the rock and is expressed in units of pore volume/original pore volume/psi. Work was started by Imperial in 1954 on the effects of pressure on the porosity of reservoir rock. These studies established effective compressibility factors for some limestones and dolomites. Since that time effective compressibilities have been obtained for other Canadian and some U. S. reservoir rocks. In conjunction with the study of porosity, an investigation has also been initiated to determine the effects of pressure on permeability. One outcrop and several reservoir sandstone cores have been tested to date. ROCK COMPRESSIBILITY Apparatus anD Procedure A diagram of the apparatus used in these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The equipment was constructed so that a uniform pressure, equivalent to the reservoir overburden, could be applied by the oil pump and transmitted on all sides of the core through the Lucite sheath. WHEN this country went into the war, but two concerns, The Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Co., knew how to make steel fit for great cannons and at these concerns there were relatively few men who knew the whole art. Fortunately, certain of these men put their knowledge at the service of the Government, and proceeded to instruct the metallurgists at the arsenals and at various steel works. The then chairman of the Engineering Division of the National Research Council, Doctor Howe, suggested that this work might be facilitated, and the number of effective gun-steel makers thereby increased, if a detailed description of the best practice could be written, giving the reasons for the various steps, and issued with the endorsement of a committee composed of those who were evidently the most competent authorities. It was thought that something would be gained by clarification of the subject, and something by the eminent authority' of the members of the committee. To that end, the Engineering Division appointed-a committee, consisting of the gentlemen whose names follow, to mention only those who retained their connection with it. At, this time there were serious difficulties in the manufacture for the Government, of aircraft and high-speed engine crankshafts, of certain ordnance forgings, and of shells for both the Army and Navy. This Committee was asked to study and report upon these, with a view to betterment of practice. There were indications that the source of some of the difficulties went back to the melting of the steel and the production of the ingot. Hence, the committee first studied steel melting and ingot production, in order to guide the wartime manufacturers to an even larger percentage of useful production from the steel initially melted.

The following paper deals with technical aspects of terminal facilities for western coal pipelines. The information is taken from the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines and the proposed one in Wyoming. This paper first discusses the feed terminal, the product that it must produce, and the reasons for coal cleaning. Then in the delivery terminal section, the various methods of dewatering the coal and some recent innovative ideas on bunkering the dewatered product and storing the dewatered coal in large outdoor piles are discussed.

The sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control. Relation of Sound to Useful Grinding Energy Experience has taught us that there is a difference in character as well as in intensity of sound between a mill grinding wet and one grinding dry, in open or closed circuit, to obtain a coarse or fine product, on the same material, to say nothing of the effect with a variety of different materials. Broadly speaking, a wet-grinding mill operates best at a lower sound level than the same mill grinding dry, with other conditions the same. Several reasons for this variation in sound intensity under these conditions can be advanced, but the important point is that there is a difference, based upon practical results. Since these reasons may be more or less involved, and may be subject, to much discussion, only one will be considered here. It is apparent that two balls hitting together or a ball striking the lining, if there is no intervening material, will produce the maximum sound. If a complete cushion of material is placed between the balls or ball and liner, so that the energy is dissipated without doing useful work, the balls will be unable to create enough pressure or force to fracture the particles, and the sound will be at a minimum. At some point in between—that is, where there is sufficient material between the balls or ball and liner so that the ball will fracture the particles without mashing them unduly—the sound

I HAVE told you of two parts of the mould for guns. You lack the third, which is the one for making the breech. This, in addition to being a part that is always ornamented with some piece of sculpture to make the gun beautiful, is that part which forms the bottom and closes the whole mould. It is also the one that sustains the entire burden of the bronze, and it must therefore be made with great consideration and diligence, taking care to make it strong with clay and with iron bands. Various methods are used in making this. Every master does as he knows how, either preferring to do it quickly or delighting to make his work ornate and beautiful. His choice also depends on whether they are to be just artillery or occasions for artistry. There are some who, if the guns are of a round form, make the pattern for the breech on a lathe, either of wood or of clay. If they are fluted, they make the flutes by hand in wood or clay, following the pattern of the board. In a part that perchance might not come out of the mould, they put some tallow underneath or make it entirely of tallow or wax so that it will come out. Likewise, if they wish to make cornices or other projections these can be put on either in wood or in clay. In the same way they also apply leafwork of clay or wax so that it can be taken out by hand or with the fire.

Mineral Industries Extension instruction was pioneered by The Pennsylvania State Colleges Extension work was organized in 1893 and constituted what is believed to be the first vocational adult educational effort in that field in America. From 1894 to 1899, twenty-seven extension bulletins were printed and distributed free for the benefit of classes in the coal-mining industry and the records show that free lectures wore delivered by a corps of teachers of the mining department of the College "to the mining employees at their customary lace of assembly upon matters of interest to them in their occupation." In 1899, the State Legislature reduced the appropriation to the College and therefore the extension pamphlets and lectures were discontinued. Several sporadic attempts were made to resume the extension services in mining through industrial grants for travel and publications, and through voluntary contributions by members of the resident staff. The work. consisted mainly of lectures and demonstrations and served the purpose of creating the desire for more training and information of a more formal character. In 1928, the nave of the school was changed, by trustee action, from School of Mines and Metallurgy to the School of Mineral Industries and the working structure of the school was organized under the three functional collaborating headings: Resident Instruction, Correspondence and Extension Instruction, and Mineral Industries Research. The three functional bodies are separate, yet interdependent. The Federal Smith-Hughes law, passed in 1917, made Federal and State funds available for vocational educational work. Mining extension was revived in 1919 and the College employed one full-time extension professor to reorganize the work and instruct the classes. In 1923, the State Department of Mines and the State Department of Public Instruction entered into, a formal agreement with the School of Mineral Industries to assist the College in its extension program.. Classes were organized to study the State mining laws and State Department of Mines' previous examination questions and answers, in preparation for coming state examinations for certification of competency as underground officials. Mimeographed lesson material was used at first, and in 1947 and 1929 mining instruction and mining teacher-training lessons were printed. In 1931, the extension activities of the school were placed on an organized basis compatible with the newly formed school organization and a director was appointed to tale full charge of the work. During that year, at a conference in Harrisburg, an agreement was consummated between the State Departments of Public. Instruction, Mines, Labor and. Industry, and the College whereby extension classes in the field of the, mineral industries could be organized by the College, throughout the State, under "public supervision and. control," in close cooperation with the State Department.

Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory toward cyanidation. Roasting and sulfurous acid pre-leaching have been suggested for improving their amenability. This paper describes the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. The history of the material is summarized and the mineralogy is described. A brief review of an earlier application of sulfurous acid pre-leaching of a manganese silver ore is presented.

The Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station, whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of LOO meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a arger concentric circle about the station. Principle of Topographic Correction The principle of all topographic corrections is to assume a homogene-ous compositon of the masses around the station in regard to specific gravity as well as a mathematical shape of the topography. The results become the more accurate the closer this mathematical shape is to the actual configuration of the terrain, but naturally the amount of necessary computation also increases. If a standard correction with fixed dis-ances is adopted, the middle error of this method will, therefore, increase as the irregularity of the terrain. Hence, the application of the torsion balance in mountainous areas may be successful only if the disturbances due to heavy masses underneath the surface are so large as to exceed onsiderably the increased middle error due to rugged topography, or,

The following notes describe a laboratory for metallurgical chemistry and technical analysis which I built late in 1903, while engaged, as constructing engineer, in erecting a pyrite smelter at the Afterthought mine, Ingot, Shasta county, California. This design partly supplements the paper of Mr. C. H. White, which was presented at the Atlantic City Meeting of the Institute in February, 1904.' The work of a chemist at a busy smelting-plant differs radically from the work of a student, who takes all possible care to have his analysis exact within hundredths of a per cent., and has plenty of time to devote to the operation. The works-chemist, having the shortest time in which to make his determinations, should have a laboratory arranged as conveniently as possible to save time in carrying out his work.
