An extension of the thermodynamic theory has been made for the case of irreversible growth processes occurring by the motion of an interface. The theory is applicable to such diverse phenomena as diffusion, growth in recrystallization, continuous grain growth, growth of carbides, etc., growth of eutectoid products, growth in solidification, recovery, "slipless" flow, etc. THE publication of a recent book1 has served to focus attention on a very powerful means of treating certain irreversible processes. This method which has been formally described as the thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is applicable to processes which involve an approach to equilibrium and for which the deviations from equilibrium are small. The irreversible processes can be classified into three groups: chemical reactions, transport processes (diffusion, heat and electrical flows), and relaxation phenomena involving a degradation of internal energy to more stable states. The limits of applicability of the theory can be precisely defined1,2 for each type of irreversible process. For example, in a chemical reaction at constant temperature and pressure, the Gibbs free energy released per mol in the process should be less than the thermal energy, RT. Another type of irreversible process, which sometimes involves a combination of the first two of the above-mentioned groups, is treated in this paper. This process is one characterized by the motion of an interface separating two regions having different values of free energy and may be briefly described as a growth process. Prigogine2 and Herring3 have treated special cases of this type of process. Previous conscious applications of the theory in metallurgy have been limited to the field of diffusion, one of the transport processes. Darken,4 Bardeen,5 Prigogine2 and others have made significant contributions in this respect. Some other applications of the theory are described in this paper. The Theory The thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes is based on the work of Onsager,6 DeDonder,7 Prigogine2 and others. A resume of the theory has been given by Prigogine2 and DeGroot.1 A brief description of the theory follows, although for a complete understanding the reader is urged to read the references. It is first assumed that the change in entropy, even for a system removed from equilibrium, is given by dS = [dU + pdV - Si µi, dn, - Sk Pk dxk]T-1 Using this expression, the irreversible entropy production in the system is calculated by subtracting the contribution to the change in entropy of the system by transfer of heat, work, or matter from the surroundings. Thus, for example, the irreversible entropy production of a system at constant temperature and pressure is given by dtS = — — dG (DeDonder7) Now it has been shown by Prigogine,2 DeDonder,7 and DeGroot1 that the rate of irreversible entropy production diS/dt, when calculated in the manner suggested, can be written as a sum of products of conjugate forces XK and fluxes Jk, i.e., d,s/ = Sk Jk Xk [I-1] dt The assumption is next made that a linear relation exists between a given flux and the forces, obtained from Eq. I-1, i.e., Ji = Sk Lik Xk (i = 1, 2, . . . n) [I-2] Generally, there is a degree of freedom in choice of the fluxes and forces. However, for all the choices consistent with Eq. I-1 the Onsager8 relations, based on the principle of microscopic reversibility, namely, Lik = Lki, are valid. The coefficients Lik, depending upon the choice of the conjugate fluxes and forces, may be more or less dependent upon the parameters defining the state of the system. In general, the proper choice of fluxes and forces utilizing Eq. I-1, makes the coefficients Lik independent of time. Also, because many of the three classes of irreversible phenomena have already been treated,1,2 a proper choice can be made by analogy. In any case, the validity of Eq. 1-2, from whatever choice made using Eq. I-1, must be tested by experimentation. IE the molecular constitution of molten slags were better known, the nature of chemical reactions in slags and between slags and metals could be better understood and as a consequence might be better controlled. Constitutional information can be obtained by studies on either the molten or the solidified slags. Valuable as the studies on solidified slags admittedly are for many purposes, especially as control methods in steelmaking, they are always of questionable value in giving information on the molecular constitution of liquid slags. However, the characteristics of molten slags such as viscosity, rates of dilfusion, and electrica1 conductivity can be determined experimentally and interpreted along with other knowledge on slag-metal and slag-gas reactions so as to provide direct information on liquid slags. Metallurgists are accustomed to regard reactions in molten slags as involving only neutral molecules, whereas it is quite possible that ionic constituents are actually involved. For example, the dissociation of calcium silicate usually is represented us Ca2SiO4 = 2CaO + SiO2 although a reasonable alternative would be to write Ca2SiO4 = 2Ca+2 + Si04-4 Such ionic dissociation has been suggested frequently without adequate experimental proof. This paper deals especially with electrical conductivity measurements on slags oi the blast-furnace type. These measurements were made to determine whether or not slags are ionized and, if so, to provide a qualitative estimate of the extent of ionization. Electrolysis experiments that indicate the identity of the ions present are also reported. Since the presence of ions has not been considered carefully in modern slag studies, the relevant literature will be reviewed. Review of Literature In 1906 Aikenl obtained a patent for a continuous process of producing iron electrolytically by passing a direct currenl through a bath of FeO.SiO2 to which iron oxide was added periodically to maintain a uniform concentration. The patent also included the addition of CaO and MgO to the bath to lower its melting point. The silicate melts involved were thus in the same system as basic open-hearth slags but with higher FeO and lower CaO contents. First actual production of titanium metal at the newly constructed Henderson, Nev., plant of Titanium Metals Corp. of America occurred in mid-October. Production will be expanded rapidly until the initial goal of 10-tons per day is reached. This will be equivalent to eight times the present world production of titanium metal. W. Eberstady & Co., New York City, has announced plans for construction of a $400 million plant for the manufacture of synthetic liquid fuels from coal in southern Illinois, if the Government will guarantee a minimum price for the gasoline and other products to be produced.

The following specifications, proposed by a sub-committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, are still to be adopted and subsequently submitted to the International Association for Testing Materials. Standard Specifications for Pig-Iron and Castings. I. Analysis.—It is recommended that all purchases be made by analysis. II. Sampling.—In contracts where pig-iron is sold by chemical analysis, each carload, or its equivalent, shall be considered as a unit. At least one pig shall be selected at random from each two tons of every carload, and so as to fairly represent it. Drillings shall be taken so as to fairly represent the fracture surface of each pig, and the sample analyzed shall consist of an equal quantity of drillings from each pig, well mixed and ground before analysis. III. Allowances and Penalties.—III all contracts, in the absence of a definite understanding to the contrary, a variation of 10 per cent. of silicon, either way, and of .01 in sulphur above the standard is allowed. A deficiency of over 10 per cent. in the silicon, up to 20 per cent., and a further increase in sulphur up to .01 over the above allowance subjects the shipment to a penalty of 1 per cent. in the price for each element so affected. IV. Base Analysis OF Grades. —In the absence of specifications the following numbers, known to the trade, shall represent the appended analyses for standard grades of foundry pig-iron, irrespective of the fracture, and subject to allowances and penalties as above. They shall be straight and shall be true circles in section, with their inner and outer surfaces concentric, and shall be of the specified dimeneions in outside diameter. They shall be at least 12 feet in length, exclusive of socket. For pipes of each size from 4-inch to 24-inch, inclusive, there shall be two standards of outside diameter, and for pipes from 30-inch to 60-inch, inclusive, there shall be four standards of outside diameter, as shown by Table No. 11.

No new oil fields were discovered in Brazil during 1945. Production for the year reached a total of 79.329 bbl., all coming from the four fields in the Baia basin; the Lobato-Joanes field produced 6728 bbl.; Aratu, 6717 bbl.; Candeias, 36,663 bbl. and Itaparica, 29,211 bbl. The total cumulative production from the Baia basin from 1939 to 1945 inclusive amounts to 210,000 bbl., all of which is utilized locally.

More economical methods of rock disintegration are needed for mining and for rapid excavation. Two major systems are drill and blast and mechanical excavation, including tunnel-boring machines. Current drill and blast methods are cyclic and there- fore limited in speed of operation. Boring machines are limited to moderately hard rock due to bearing and cutter wear. The recent development of ANFO, which has reduced blasting costs markedly, was largely fortuitous because of the method of manufacturing AN prills. New slurries and fluid explosives are easy to load and have high energy-pressure characteristics.

Concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine, are not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The basic philosophy is that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed, as well as a mu1tiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

Rapid growth rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

Sulfur is widely distributed in nature. It is present in the earth's crust, the ocean, the meteorites that come to us from cosmic space and in practically all animal and plant life. According to Clarke,9 the earth's crust contains 0.06 pct sulfur. Large quantities of free or combined sulfur are found in coal, natural gas and petroleum. Mineral waters contain sulfates and hydrogen sulfide. Sulfur is rather plentiful in the crust of the earth; however, only under special circumstances can it be produced profitably. Sulfur is one of the cheapest raw materials used by industry; and, therefore, the economic feasibility of a given deposit is strongly dictated by the law of supply and demand on local as well as world-wide levels. The forms which are commercially important are elemental sulfur or brimstone, and the sulfides such as pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (FenSn+1), chalcocite (Cu2S), sphalerite (ZnS), and galena (PbS); the sulfates such as gypsum (CaSO4,2H2O), anhydrite (CaSO4), and kieserite (MgSO4,H2O). Elemental Sulfur Elemental sulfur is found in many localities, generally in solfataras and gypsum type deposits. The solfatara deposits are found commonly in the neighborhood of active or extinct volcanoes as in Italy, Japan and Chile, or fumaroles associated with mineral springs such as the Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone Park. Here the sulfur is deposited in tufas or other porous host rocks. This type of sulfur deposit probably results from the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide or the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with sulfur dioxide. Most of the world's supply of elemental sulfur comes from the gypsum-type deposits. Here the mineral occurs as either crystalline or amorphous sulfur in sedimentary rocks in close association with gypsum and limestone. This association is characteristic and occurs in almost all the great gypsum beds of the world, although sulfur is not always present in quantities of economic importance. Various theories have been advanced to account for this association. Bischof5 suggested that the sulfur came from hydrogen sulfide which resulted from the reduction of calcium sulfate by carbon or methane in accordance with the following reactions: CaSO4 + 2C= CaS + 2CO2 CaS + C02+ H2O = CaCO3 + H2S CaSO4 + CH4= CaS + C02+ 2H20 2H2S + 02= 2H20 + 2S All of the sulfur-bearing domes on the Gulf Coast have calcium sulfate in great quantity in the cap. They all show the presence of hydrocarbons. The oxygen for the final reaction could have been supplied by circulating ground waters. The principal objection to this theory is that temperatures of 700° to 1000°C are needed to reduce the sulfate to sulfide with carbon compounds. The geologic evidence is that the temperature of the sulfur-bearing domes of Texas did not exceed 100°C. Proponents of the theory say that geologic time or a catalyst replaced temperature. According to another theory the sulfur in the salt domes is the result of bacterial action. Sulfate reducing bacteria have been detected in sulfur cores and in the formation water issuing from salt domes. It has, therefore, been suggested that these bacteria converted the sulfate to sulfide which subsequently was converted to elemental sulfur.

The ß and a ß transformations in plutonium were studied with particular emphasis on the transformation kinetics and microstructure. Significant observations are: 1) The kinetic data show conclusively that the ß — a transformation in high-purity plutonium can proceed isothermally with no athermal component. 2) Plastic deformation of the stable (3 phase retards the subsequent (3 — a transformation. 3) Plastic deformation of the stable a phase accelerates the a — ß transformation; the acceleration is attributed only to residual stresses. 4) The a and a?a volume changes occur anisotroPically in textured plutonium. 5) An apparent crystallogvaphic relationship exists between the parent and the product phases of the and (3 — a transformations. 6) Both applied uniaxial compressive stresses and uniaxial tensile stresses raise the starting temperature for the ß — a transformation. 7) A given uniaxial tensile stress favors the a — ß transformation more than an equivalent applied uniaxial compressive stress opposes the transformation. These observations of the (ß —a and a — ß phase changes in plutonium are consistent with known mar-tensitic transformations. ThIS paper elucidates some of the characteristics of the a— ß and ß —a transformations in plutonium. Because considerable conjecture exists about the mechanisms by which the phase transformations occur in plutonium, experiments have been performed to provide indirect information concerning the mechanisms responsible for the a —ß and ß -a transformations. Indirect information is of particular value in the study of plutonium because of the experimental difficulties presented by the metal. Single crystals have not been produced in any of the allotropes. The large density results in high X-ray and electron-absorption factors and consequently complicating X-ray and electron diffraction. The kinetics of ß — a and a — ß transformations of plutonium and the behavior of the transformations under a variety of conditions have been investigated in detail. Information about the mechanisms of the allo-tropic transformations of plutonium was obtained indirectly from three sources: 1) the effect of plastic deformation of the stable parent phase upon the transformation kinetics; 2) the behavior of the metal transforming under applied stresses; and 3) the microstruc-tural and crystallographic features between parent and product phases. PHASE-TRANSFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS In characterizing solid-state phase transformations in metals and alloys, it is useful to define several types of transformations. An aim of the present work was to identify the low-temperature transformations in plutonium by type, i.e., as martensitic or nonmar-tensitic. Practical definitions for these terms follow. The terms commonly used to categorize phase transformations lack universally accepted definitions. This confusion arises doubtlessly because some terms specify crystallographic or morphological character while other words have a kinetic or a thermodynamic connotation. For example, martensitic specifies certain definite crystallographic restrictions. Unfortunately, martensitic is sometimes used in an ill-defined way to imply kinetic characteristics. Further confusion attends the use of such expressions as nucleation and growth, diffusional, and massive. From time to time new systems of phase-transformation nomenclature are suggested; unfortunately none of these has gained general acceptance.1,2 The authors of the present paper have no intention of entering the controversy. We recognize that some readers may object to the nomencliture used here. For exampie, the terms military and civilian have recently been used in much the same way as martensitic and non-martensitic are used in this paper. This paper is intended to describe several specific details of the low-temperature phase transformations in plutonium. The authors have found it useful to identify these transformations as martensitic; the term was chosen as the best available to describe the experimentally observed features of the transformations studied. A martensitic transformation is one that occurs by the cooperative movement of many atoms; the rearrangement of atoms from parent to product crystal structure occurs by the passage of a mobile semico-herent growth interface. The geometric features characteristic of a martensitic transformation are a specific orientation relationship between the product and parent phase lattices, a specific habit-plane orientation for the growth interface, and a shape change with a specifically oriented shear component. There is no alloy partition between the parent and product phases in a martensitic transformation. Martensitic transformations may display either athermal kinetic behavior or thermally activated isothermal kinetic behavior. Some martensitic transformations occur isothermally, although more commonly martensitic transformations are athermal. Isothermal martensitic transformations are suppressible by rapid cooling. In athermal martensitic transformations, nucleation and growth are not thermally activated and the transformations are essentially time-independent. The addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu to Zr-2.5 Cb alloy increases the as -quenched hardness of the hexagonal martensitic a' phase, produced by water-quenching bccß-Zr phase, by about 35 pct. This strengthening has been attributed to the solid -solution hardening of the matrix. On aging ternary martensite, a' phase reverts to equilibrium a and Zr2Cu and ß-Cb precipitate out, mainly at the twin and grain boundaries, causing a secondary hardening of the matrix. COLD-worked Zircaloy-2 pressure tubes have been in use in power reactors for a considerable period of time. The search for a better material led to the development of Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy which in the quench-aged condition develops 50 pct more strength than that of cold-worked Zircaloy-2, however, its corrosion resistance in water and steam in the temperature range of 316" to 400°C, in absence of neutron flux, is inferior to that of zircaloy-2.' Work carried out by Ells et al.1 and Dalgaard2 has shown that the corrosion properties of Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy can be considerably improved by the ternary addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu. This paper is concerned with the effect of 0.5 wt pct Cu on the formation of martensitic a and its aging characteristics in a Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Zr-2.5 Cb-0.5 Cu (referred to as the ternary alloy) and Zr-2.5 Cb (referred to as the binary alloy) alloys, supplied by the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories of the AECL were used. The detailed chemical analysis is given in Table I. Cold rolling and swagging with frequent intermediate anneal of 1000°C were used for the initial fabrication of the alloys. All the heat treatments were carried out after the specimens were wrapped in zirconium foils and encapsulated in silica tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-6 mm of Hg. For optical metallography and hardness measurements specimens were mechanically and then chemically polished in a 45 pct HNOj, 45 pct HzO, and 10 pct HF solution. Hardness was measured on a Vickers hardness tester using a 10-kg load. For each specimen at least fifteen indentations were made in order to obtain a representative value. The phase identification and structural analysis were carried out using X-rays and electron diffraction techniques. Wires of 1.5 mm diam reduced to 0.12 mm diam by chemical etching were used for making Debye-Scherrer powder patterns using Cu Ka radiation in a 114.6 mm diam camera. Carbon extraction replicas were prepared by etching the specimens, after depositing a layer of carbon on the metallographic specimen, in one part HF and thirty parts ethyl alcohol. Thin films were prepared by electropolishing heat-treated 3/4 by 1/2 by 0.005 in. thick strips using a modified Bollman-Window technique. The 10 pct perchloric acid-90 pct methyl alcohol bath was kept at -50°C and polishing was done at 5 to 10 V. The thinned specimens were washed in ethyl alcohol at -30º to -40°C and dried between filter papers. Replicas and thin films were examined in a Phillips 300 G electron microscope. For resistivity measurements thin strip specimens 0.02 by 0.3 by 10.0 cm long were used. The potential leads were spot welded to the specimens in order to maintain a fixed length for the initial and the final resistivity measurements. The resistivity was measured by a Kelvin bridge in a temperature controlled room. The temperature was maintained at 72º ±1°F and the accuracy of the resistivity measurements was 0.03 µa-cm. RESULTS As-Quenched Structures. In order to produce a homogeneous matrix to study the precipitation reaction the solution-treatments of both the alloys were carried out in the -field region. From the Zr-Cb phase diagram due to Lundin and cox3 ß/a + ß phase boundary for Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy is 820°C. Ells et al.1 have reported this boundary for Zr-2.5 Cb alloy containing 1100 ppm 0 to be at 920°C. Also, the addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu reduces this temperature by 50°C. Therefore, the solution-treatments were carried out at 1000°C to ensure that the alloys were in ß-phase region. The soaking time was 1 hr and the specimens were water-quenched. The as-quenched hardness of the binary alloy was 245 Vpn whereas, that of the ternary alloy was 330 Vpn. The X-ray diffraction studies indicated that the as-quenched structure of both the alloys consists of martensitic hexagonal phase a', with a c/a ratio of 1.591, and some retained ß-Zr. The presence of a' phase was further confirmed by thin film electron microscopy. Electron micrographs of typical ß-quenched structures of the ternary and the binary alloys are shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Fig. 3 shows the diffraction pattern from an area similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Although, the as-quenched hardness of the ternary alloy is about 35 pct greater than that of the binary alloy, the structure of both the alloys seems to be the same. The matrix of both alloys is heavily twinned and shows very few dislocations. Furthermore, there is no evidence of any precipitation taking place in either of the two specimens during quenching from the solution-treatment temperature. Aging Behavior of Martensitic a'. The work of Americanism is getting under way slowly but surely. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to build for all time and it therefore wishes to lay its foundations securely, feeling that the true understanding and adoption of the ideals of Americanism are the safeguards of our country from the perils of anarchy, and the bond of union between labor, brains, and capital. We hope to have reports from several directors to print next month and here append the report of the Director for the New York Section, Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt.

ARTHUR F. BRAID,* New. York, N. Y. (written discussion ?). -I have read Mr. Cain's paper with a very great deal of interest. The subject is one that is worth a great deal of thought and research at this time. It is a well-known fact that the strong affinity of steel or, iron for oxygen is perhaps the main detriment to sound production, and, as the author states, it is-indeed remarkable that today there are no analytical methods in general use in steel works for determining the gaseous con-stituents of steel.
