Possibly the most puzzling features observed during a single-crystal deformation test are the appearance of slip striae on the surface of the crystal and the strengthening of the specimen.' While the first phenomenon is mainly of theoretical interest, the latter is fundamental to all strain-hardening and cold-working processes in which the deformation occurs by translation. The plastic deformation of crystals has received considerable discussion2 and need not be reviewed here in any great detail. It has been observed, essentially, that after a certain amount of. initial stress is applied, the surface of the crystal becomes covered with sets of parallel striae or rings which appear to divide it into thin slabs or slip blocks.3 The striae are the traces of rational crystallographic planes along which shearing movements are localized, these movements providing the strain which accompanies stress applied beyond pure elasticity. As deformation under the applied stress proceeds the slip blocks shear past one another, although the essentially single-crystal character of the specimen is unimpaired. All of the shearing apparently takes place in the immediate vicinity of the original slip striae without the appearance of new planes of movement.4 Since each increment of strain is attended by an increased stress requirement to continue the deformation, the crystal strengthens during the process.

THE use of copper sulfate for improving the flotation behavior of sphalerite is probably at least 15 years old. The original discovery of its activating influence is somewhat obscure. The story goes that in the mill at Mascot, Tenn., its favorable action was discovered by accident, early in 1914, as follows: The original laboratory test work on a sphalerite ore gave favorable flotation results, but after a mill had been built the flotation concentration of the ore was very unsatisfactory. In diagnosing the probable reasons, one fact pointed out was that the laboratory test machine had been constructed of bronze whereas the commercial machine allowed pulp to come in contact only with wood and iron. A plate of sheet copper was hung in the flotation machine and results immediately improved. At first fanciful explanations of electrolytic and electrostatic behavior were given credence, but when the copper plate was removed and a small amount of copper sulfate substituted in the pulp an even more favorable result was obtained. Toward the end of 1914 copper sulfate was also adopted in the acid flotation circuit of the Butte and Superior Copper Co. Just who is responsible for the original discovery the present writers do not know: It seems strange that in that era of flotation litigation this discovery was not patented. While for pragmatic purposes it may be sufficient to know that the mere addition of copper compounds to a flotation pulp is sufficient to activate the flotation of the sphalerite, for scientific purposes it is quite desirable to know more about how the action takes place. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain evidence dealing with the mechanism of the beneficial effect. The description of the effect as activation in contradistinction to depression is now common in both the English and German languages. It makes no assumptions as to whether the zinc sulfide surfaces have been filmed with copper compounds. In fact, the principal differences of opinion expressed in the literature deal with whether there is an actual formation of CuS (or even Cu2S) on the surface of the sphalerite.

IT has been said that carbon is "ubiquitous" with reference to iron alloys. Certainly at temperatures where carbon and iron form the solid solution, austenite, it may be readily added to, or removed from, steel surfaces. Differences in concentration potential are the sole requirements for carbon flow. To measure the rate of carbon flow, a proportionality factor, D, is arbitrarily expressed in units of (length)2 X (time)-1. If the term used for carbon concentration is weight pct C, as is customary, then a factor must be found, changing this term to one of weight per unit volume when the diffusion coefficient, D, is used in flow formulae. The determination of D values for carbon is complicated since D varies with the concentration itself. The Matano method has often been employed for systems involving a variant D. This method expreses an evaluation of unsteady flow whereby .0 is given a relationship with the numerical value of C-X slopes. The author contends that this solution is incorrect, except when D is invariant. The primary purpose of this paper is to support this contention. Here diffusion is controlled under two conditions of flow. The first part deals with the steady state; the second part considers unsteady flow under definite restrictions. Beginning with the fundamental concept, the development is continued until equations for C-X curves are obtained. The solution is then subjected to experimental data. It is realized that a great amount of reliable data is required for a rigorous proof. No such research is claimed. Instead an attempt is made to set forth the physical significance of the diffusion mechanism, and particularly to express the factors which influence the flow of carbon in austenite. Of equal significance is the implication that gaseous media may be employed with reasonable accuracy in making these determinations. THE STEADY STATE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN AUSTENITE The fundamental experiment defining diffusion in solid metals may be readily performed for carbon in gamma iron.1 For this experiment a thin plate of medium carbon steel is chosen. The surfaces of this plate may be taken as two parallel planes which may be considered infinite for points well in the center of the planes. These two planes are held at different concentrations of carbon at a constant temperature. This temperature, 1700°F for example, is one where the single phase, carbon in solution with gamma iron, exists. When these conditions are held for a sufficient time the concentration of carbon of the different points of the solid settles down towards its steady state value. At points well removed from the ends, the concentration will remain the same along planes parallel to the surfaces of the plate.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) DURING the winter of 1868-9, I was called upon by Professor F. H. Storer, to put up the Bunsen filter pump in the chemical laboratory of the Masschusetts Institute of Technology. As the laboratory is on the lower floor, it was found necessary to use a great deal of cumbrous pipe and apparatus to get the necessary column. It was then suggested that if an instrument could be devised which would make use of the hydrant pressure in the service-pipe, it would do away with the objectionable features of the Bunsen pump. After using the Bunsen pump for some years, the jet pump to be described in this paper was devised, and it has since been adopted by Prof. Wing in the quantitative laboratory of the school. I am much indebted to Prof. Wing for his aid in starting the manufacture in brass of these jet pumps, which are now to be had in Boston. The jet pump much resembles the Giffard injector in form. It differs from it in the fact that water is the impelling fluid, and air the impelled, while with the injector steam is used to impel water. The principle of condensation of steam, which is Water availed of in the injector, is entirely wanting in the jet pump. The jet pump consists in a water jet, w, (see figure), a constriction or waist, a, and a waste tube, o. The success of the jet pump depends on the following conditions 1. The relation between the sizes of sectional area of a and w. 2. The proximity of a and w. 3. The form and angle of the two hollow cones whose vertices make the constriction a. 4. The relative size of sectional area of w and o. 5. The zigzags, or an equivalent means of making foam. The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.

Gentlemen.-It is pleasant to be able to report that the year just closed has been a prosperous and successful one for the Institute. As is shown by the reports of the Treasurer and the Finance Committee, the business affairs of this organization are in excellent condition. With property valued at more than three-quarters of a million dollars, and with considerable sums in various funds and endowments, it is possible to spend on each member of whatever class $22.65 each year, more than the maxi- mum amount of dues received from any one, and substantially twice the average amount, $10.94, received from all. To do this has required close management and a strict regard for our limitations. In 1926, when the Budget was made up, the estimated expenditures for the work which it was felt the Institute must do exceeded the estimated receipts by some $14,000. At the close of the year, despite a number of unexpected decreases in receipts, it had proved possible to accomplish substantially all the work laid out and close the books with the usual transfer of initiation fees to the General Reserve, and still only reduce the cash balance $2,074.54. This was made possible by the hearty and loyal cooperation of the whole staff of employees and the extremely large amount of gratuitous service rendered by the officers, the members of the Divisions and technical Committees, and the membership generally. Even so it was impossible, because of limitations of funds, to undertake many things it is highly desirable for the Institute to do, and it was necessary to refuse the publication of important papers and committee studies, because of the lack of funds. PUBLICATIONS In an analysis of the income and expenses of the Institute published in the February issue of our Journal, MINING AND METALLURGY, it was pointed out that the largest item of expenditure is, as it should -be, for publications. Printing, binding, and distributing the various technical papers sent to the members cost in 1926 more than all the money received from dues, including the portion allocated as subscription to the magazine. Within the. year, the following volumes were printed and, with the exception of the second volume of TRANSACTIONS, which was mailed in January, were distributed : TRANSACTIONS, Volume 73, 1241 pages, covering papers on non-ferrous metallurgy, milling and concentration, non-metallic minerals, iron and steel, and the Institute of Metals Division papers read at the

COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The commercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depend¬ing upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

IN developing the orebody on lower levels of the Star mine at Burke, Idaho, Hecla Mining Co. is faced with a serious problem in driving raises. Levels are at 200-ft intervals. As a raise is being driven between levels, at points about 70 and 130 ft from the sill, heavy pressure arches develop and the raise becomes extremely hazardous. Eventually, following a blast, caving occurs, making it impossible to recover the raise. In February 1957 it was decided to attempt sinking a small winze on the vein from the 5500 to the 5700 level. This shaft (winze-raise No. 2) was to be used as a raise prior to stoping. It was assumed, and correctly, that the heavy ground pressure could be controlled by timbering close to the bottom after each advance.

An analysis of indexing is given for an idealized plastic rock. Indexing refers to chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater. A method is indicated for computing the dependence of chip size and shape as well as force on the tooth for various tooth shapes as a function of crater configuration and distance to the previous crater. Pressure on the tooth is found to vary with depth of penetration after a critical depth has been reached. Damp sand model experiments indicate that simple solutions using linear and logarithmic spiral slip-line fields for Coulomb plastic materials give reasonable approximations to the failure patterns. Both idealized roller cone bits and fixed blade or drag bits are considered, and methods are presented for approximating the force on the bit and the chip volume when the rock is subjected to sufficiently high pressure to behave plastically. One of the primary objectives of drilling research investigations is to develop theoretical equations which can be used to predict the behavior of rock under drilling loading conditions. Since rocks usually fail in a brittle manner at atmospheric conditions, much current research is directed to studies of the brittle failure of rock under the action of drilling too1s. 1,2 The results of triaxial test on rocks indicate that both rock strength and ductility increase at high confining pressures.3 Recent results from single bit-tooth indentation experiments on dry rocks indicate that the transition from brittle to ductile failure under a bit tooth can occur at pressures sufficiently low to be of interest in oil well drilling.4 Single bit tooth experiments and analyses are not directly applicable to the drilling process since one of the important facets in drilling is the interaction between a bit-tooth and the previously formed crater. This interaction is referred to as indexing.' The purpose of the present paper is to indicate how plasticity theory can be applied to the analysis of indexing for plastic rock. Drag bit or fixed-blade drilling is considered and a discussion is given of the drilling action of an idealized roller cone bit. Results of simple experimental studies using a damp sand model are given as a method of visualizing the failure patterns in rocks under high confining pressures. These results are compared with plasticity theory using simple solutions based on linear and logarithmic spiral slip-lines. Discontinuous stress fields are proposed for drag bit drilling based upon the soil mechanics analysis of Shields. SINGLE BIT TOOTH RESULTS Single bit tooth indentation experiments using dry rocks under pressures from 0 to 5000 psi have indicated a correlation between the shape of a force-displacement curve and the nature of the rock failure beneath the tool.4 Continuous linear curves are in-

IN THE early stages of the depression the Utah Copper Co. realized that an unemployment problem would he created which demanded an intelligent and sympathetic solution. The company recognized that as many men as possible must be kept at work on a basis which would ultimately permit of the most efficient reabsorption of displaced labor. The company therefore determined to distribute available work among the greatest number of men and to that end adopted a system of rotating employees on a part-time basis. An employer requires a certain number of days' or shifts' work during the month. Obviously one employee working thirty days or shifts a month is equal to two employees each working fifteen. In principle, therefore, where two employees equally fitted to do certain work are available the work could be divided between them on an equitable basis and twice as many persons would benefit. A rotation plan on this basis was adopted by the Utah Copper, Co. on Jan. 30, 1930. Some variations of the orig¬inal plan have been made from time to time, the reasons for which will be discussed.

THE Coal Division of Battelle Memorial Institute, during the course of an investigation conducted for a coal producer, carried out extensive sampling of the fine-coal section of a preparation plant. The information obtained during the testing period was used to evaluate the overall plant operation and provided the basis for. recommended changes in the plant flowsheet. Included in the information were data for the results obtained when using a Bird centrifuge to dewater the particular coal being treated. At the completion of the investigation, the coal producer gave Battelle permission to publish the operating data for the Bird centrifuge in order to make this information available to the coal industry. The authors wish to take this opportunity to express their appreciation to this company and its officials for their willing cooperation in the matter of publication. Description of Preparation Plant: The preparation plant on which the data were obtained is primarily a jig plant. The coal being washed is a low inherent moisture, friable, Pocahontus-type. The washed coal from the jig is dewatered and sized at 1/4 in. by a Parrish-type dewatering and sizing screen. The minus 1/4-in. coal and the underflow water from the shaker screen flow to a sludge tank where, after the coal settles, the coal is conveyed by a flight conveyor into a pump sump. The pump, a 300-gpm sand pump, delivers a mixture of fine coal and water to a Bird centrifuge which produces a dewatered cake and an effluent. At the time when the investigation was made, the centrifuge effluent was returned to the sludge tank and the cake product was mixed with a coarser size of coal prior to loading into railroad cars. The semiclarified water from the sludge tank overflowed into a pump sump from which it was pumped to the jig. As originally designed, the preparation plant was intended to operate with a closed water system but it was found, soon after operations started, that for various reasons this could not be done. In order to provide for removal of excess water from the system and to aid in maintaining the desired minimum percentage of solids in the circulating water, the plant was operated to provide from the sludge tank a continuous overflow of water and fine solids that was sent to waste. The centrifuge feed represents approximately 35 tons per hour of minus 1/4-in. coal in the form of a pulp averaging 38 pct solids. Sampling Procedure: In order to obtain basic data for determining the relationships existing in the fine-coal section of the preparation plant, samples were obtained for: (1) the centrifuge feed, (2) the centrifuge cake, (3) the centrifuge effluent, and (4) the circulating water. The sampling was arranged to start on a Monday, in order to begin operations with a sludge tank full of fresh water, and was continued long enough to allow sufficient time for fine solids to build up within the water system or for a two-day, four-shift operating period. THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE on the rolling characteristics of the precious metals-gold, silver, the platinum metals and their alloys-is incomplete and mostly from scattered sources. In the present paper an effort has been made to assemble and correlate it and to fill in some of the gaps that exist. GENERAL ROLLING CHARACTERISTICS SOME EFFECTS OF IMPURITIES Gold and its alloys are generally considered to be hot short and hence are usually rolled cold. Cold rolling of the yellow, green, and pink gold alloys. Which customarily contain gold, silver, copper and zinc and frequently some nickel as well, introduces no new problems since reasonable reductions are quite feasible and the alloys show little tendency to fire crack in subsequent annealing. The white gold alloys. which usually contain little or no silver and 10 pct or more nickel, are very susceptible to fire cracking1 and hence wrist he given relatively heavy reductions, i. e., 8-10 pct or more per pass with a total reduction of about 50 pct between anneals, to minimize this tendency. In addition, it is preferable to keep the bar as flat as possible during rolling. New Granada, or, as it is known to its people, the Republic of Colombia, occupies the northwest corner of South America, and includes the Isthmus of Panama. Although it is one of our nearest neighbors, so little is known about it in the United States that the following notes regarding it, flowing from a year's professional residence, may be timely. It is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea and Costa Rica, on the east by Venezuela and Brazil, on the south by Brazil and Ecuador, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Its extreme geographical limits are from 2' South latitude to 12' North latitude, and from 69 to 78' East longitude. In size, therefore, it is roughly 1000 miles from north to south, and 600 miles from east to west. After many political convulsions and revolutions, and a somewhat checkered history, the country consists to-day of nine departments, Panama, Bolivar, Magdalena, Cauca, Santander, Antioquia, Tolima, Boyaca and Cundinamarca. These departments are governed from the national capital of Bogota, although each has its own capital and departmental staff. The late Professor P. B. Bucky of Columbia University introduced the principles and techniques of barodynamic experimentation in early 1931 by the application of centrifugal loading to achieve dynamic similitude between models and prototypes of mine structures.1 Later, he and his associates introduced the combined experimental technique of photo- elasticity and the centrifuge to determine the stress distribution in civil engineering structures and mine workings by the use of transparent bakelite models.2,3 The photostress technique, also known as the birefringent-coating method of photoelastic stress analysis, dates back to 1930, when Mesnager published its principles.4 Since then it has been widely applied to experimental stress analyses in many industries. A practical method of observing the dynamic behavior of opaque mine models, which are made of prototype materials, by means of a combination of the centrifugal and the photostress techniques is a new experimental approach under development at the Henry Krumb School of Mines, Columbia University.5 This paper summarizes the development of the barodynamic photostress technique and presents the information obtained from a recent series of experiments in the study of the behavior of rock beams loaded by their own weight. The first operating unit of the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany was rated 185 tpd and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are under construction or on order. Sizes range from approximately 100-330 tpd, however, units of over 500 tons are in the design stage. The ring shaft kiln is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping (Fig. 1). Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc., are mounted at the kiln top and at the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger. Mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

After discussing the geology of the Limagne, the surface indications of petroleum, and the recent exploration, the author states that none of the wells were properly located and that oil possibilities of the Limagne have not been adequately tested. NO PETROLEUM, in commercial quantities, is found in France except the small production of the Pechelbronn field (Fig. 1) in Alsace, which produced 75,000 tons in 1923; therefore the test of the petroleum FIG. 1.-KEY MAP. prospects of the Limagne is most interesting. Under the superintendence of M. Termier, chief engineer of the French mines, a well near Crouelle (Fig. 2) was drilled in 1921 to a depth of 856.3 m. (2808 ft.); at different depths favorable showings were encountered. The well, however, was abandoned because of drilling difficulties. A second one is now being drilled near the same place.

The literature on the beneficiation of serpentine asbestos ore states that the specific gravity of the rock containing fiber and the fiber itself is the same so that specific gravity cannot be used as a basis for separation. An investigation of particles of asbestos ore ranging in size from 4 mesh to 5 in. revealed that the fiber-bearing particles generally had a lower specific gravity compared to essentially barren particles. The difference in specific gravity was sufficient to make an effective gravity separation of ore particles and reject a low grade tailings product. The results of laboratory tests are described that lead to the running of pilot plant tests with 20-ton ore samples using a heavy media separator. These tests indicated that a large amount of low grade material could be rejected from the raw ore at a coarse size. Although the process used is a wet separation, it can be added to a conventional dry asbestos mill. A gravity preconcentration would allow the mining of lower grade ore, increase the life of the mine, increase the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section, and decrease maintenance costs by removal of low grade tailings early in the flowsheet.
