THE work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of, the Ordnance Department, U. S. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. PART I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elements, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600° C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-steel forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

Industrial specialization has rapidly created a demand for new and better alloys. A more thorough understanding of the requirements of specific industries and the discovery of processes by which it has been made possible to utilize certain metallic elements in larger quantities, together with greater purity in most virgin metals, has resulted in a great increase in the number and variety of alloys. This increase in the number of elements entering into non-ferrous alloy manufacture has increased the contamination in secondary metals, as received by the smelter. In order to successfully refine scrap of a much more complex nature it has been necessary for the smelter to install new equipment and to constantly search for new methods of refining as well as to improve the methods already in use. In some instances it is largely responsible for specialization in the secondary metal industry. It is usually necessary to remove the contaminating impurities in scrap or eliminate to a degree not objectionable, no matter how introduced. In order to know what metals or elements are of an objectionable nature, the smelter must make a study of the effect of single elements and combinations of elements on many of the physical and mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, color, hardness, casting soundness, etc. The smelter of secondary mctals must be able to utilize scrap materials of all kinds, for, sooner or later, most fabricated metal parts and the waste products formed during the process of manufacture find their way to the smelter. In addition, the smelter, in contracting for salvaged material from the producer, gets some undesirable and unusual materials. The value of secondary metals and the importance of their recovery has increased in recent years and it is no longer sufficient to recover the base metal only, such as copper from copper-bearing material, but it is essential that other elements present be recovered and converted into useful form. This paper will deal not with the smelting and refining or separation of impurities from secondary metals but an attempt will be made to show the increased value of metal scrap when properly segregated and in a less contanlinated condition. INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. There are no hard and fast rules for building tailing dams, and each case has to be analyzed individually because of special conditions encountered at each location. Certain criteria are used for building dams at Climax, Colo., where they must be placed in rather steep mountain valleys on foundations that are practically impermeable. The tailing is relatively coarse, and a coarse fraction stays near the berm where it is deposited, while most of the fines flow with the water to the pool. Thirty years experience has led to certain design for toe dams, decanter lines and towers and tailing dams. A new tailing disposal area, started at Climax in 1958, will ultimately have a height of 495 ft and impound about 300 million tons. The following applies to the construction of this new tailing area.

The discovery of prolific oil wells in old territory hitherto regarded as doubtful, if not worthless, and the rapid extension of a gas pool opened late in 1938 were the most interesting petroleum features in West Virginia during 1939. Oil activity in general was slow because of crude prices that were still fairly low at the end of the year, although substantially increased above those in January. Fewer oil wells were completed, but the average results were better than in 1938. Fewer gas wells, also, were completed, with greatly lessened average initial production. Many old oil and gas wells were abandoned, so that the total number of active wells has not changed appreciably. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other sources, shows that 561 new wells were drilled, resulting in 101 new oil wells with 2261 bbl. of daily initial production; 366 new gas wells with 602,400,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 94 dry holes. Besides these new wells, 61 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 12 bbl. and 13,328,000 cn. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.38 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,645,900 cu. ft. per well per day; the ratio of dry holes to completions was 16.76 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one partly discredited oil area was revived by good new production, and another small oil pool may have been opened. Some of the results in gas exploration will require more drilling for true appraisal. It is certain, though, that one very considerable gas field in the sands of Mississippian age has been proved; and there is a probability of six new pools in the Middle Devonian shale. In the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) the Elk-Poca pool has been extended considerably farther northwest into Jackson County; and farther north in Jackson County two widely separated wells, which may be pool openers, have been successfully completed. On the other hand, several important wildcats in various counties have been dry. Stratigraphically lower, some additional wells have been completed in the Newburg sand (Sil.) and one small producer has been completed in the Clinton sand (Sil.), the importance of which can scarcely be overestimated, because no Clinton production has previously been found in the state, although at least seven wells have been drilled through the sand.

IN these days the headlines and spotlight have been focused largely upon the new processes developed and new plants erected to meet the multiplied demands for mineral products required for prosecution of the war. By comparison, the less spectacular achievements of the miner, who is meeting the demand for raw material without which these processes and plants would be useless, have received little attention. Attendance at the mining meetings here reported was small, averaging about 35 to 40, but interest was as keen as ever, and evidenced to your reporter that the miner is no less on the job than is the metallurgist. It is evident that the mine operators are not neglecting any improved methods and practices in their struggle to produce more in the face of diminishing labor supply.

Not only E. B. Mayo but also W. C. Lacy, who apparently urged the preparation of this analysis, is to be commended. Regional thinking of this type is needed to assure future success in the never-ending search for new mineralized and petroliferous districts. As is usually the case, here is a regional study that will be read by the mining geologist alone. It is ironic that several of the trends established in this study have suggested themselves in northern mid-continent, detailed, and regional studies. These, where established, have offered new keys to petroleum exploration and have provided a possible basis for unraveling a number of broad generalities. The oil geologists, active in Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma, would find much food for thought in Mr. Mayo's projections.

Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. The information which is required for' a preliminary feasibility study and the additional information which is required for the final feasibility study on a new mineral deposit are discussed. The preliminary feasibility study is made from very little information and at a minimum cost to the owner. However, the outline for the preliminary report is similar to the one used in the final report. In this manuscript, it is assumed that the results from the preliminary study are favorable and the owner authorizes a final feasibility study by an outside engineering company. The type of organization for completing this final feasibility study is described. The final reports includes all information and data relative to this new mineral deposit. This information is presented so that it may be understood by financial people as well as by technical people.

INTRODUCTION Deeper drilling for oil is becoming more and more the rule rather than the exception. With deeper drilling come additional problems, perhaps the greatest being those brought on by the higher temperatures encountered down the hole. particularly in the Gulf Coast region of Texas and Louisiana. Temperature gradients of the order of 1.8° to 2.0°F/100 ft are not unusual, and a gradient of 2.3"F.'100 ft is found in some areas of Texas. With a mean surface temperature of 74oF, the following temperatures could be expected for a geothermal gradient of 2.0°F; 100 ft: at 10,000 it. 271°F. 12,000 ft, 314°F: 14,000 ft, 354,oF; and 16.000 ft. 394°F. Severe gelation of lime-base drilling fluid in wells that have high bottom hole temperatures has become perhaps the most serious difficulty enconntered in drilling under such conditions. Lime-base drilling fluids have been very succesefully and widely used in the drilling of wells in the Gulf Coast region because of their inherent stability toward contaminants. their ability to suppress the swelling dispersion of bentonitic shales, and their ease of maintainance. The gradual recognition: during the past few years, that these muds were. in themselve. the cause of many difficulties experienced in drilling has led to wide-pread efforts by the drilling industry. to determine the reasons for the failure of these mud systems and to develop mud systems capable of performing satisfactorily under high-temperature conditios. MANIFESTATIONS OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE GELATION it is generally possible to recognize the symptons of high-temperature gelation early enough that advance predictions can be made of serious difficulties. in mud control, and the useful life of the drilling fluids can be extended by proper treatment. Following i.; a list of the manifestations of high-temperature gelation: (1) The drill string 'takes weight' while going in the hole after a trip. In early stages of high-temperature gelation it is possible to notice a slight reduction in drill string weight as the drill pipe is lowred near the bottom of the hole. (2) Excessive pump pressure is required to .tart the circulation of drilling fluid at or near the bottom of the hole when going hack to bottom after a trip. As the severity of the gelation increases it may be necessary to break circulation a number of times when going in the hole. (3) The drilling fluid from the bottom of the hole is thick and often granular or lumpy when pumped up after making a round trip. In a severely gelled drilling fluid system such a condition may be irreversible; that is, it cannot be stirred or chemically treated to produce a satisfactory drilling fluid. (4) Completion tool.. such as logging tools or perforating guns will not sink to the bottom of the hole. On some occasions completion tools will become stuck and require a fishing job to retrieve them if the wire line attached to them is broken. It is often difficult to determine whether the condition of the drilling fluid is responsible for sticking the tool or whether the wire line becomes key seated in a crooked hole and causes the allow difficulty. When there are 110 other symptoms of high-temperature gelation. then the difficulty may usually be attributed to the latter cause. (5) In extreme cases of high-temperature gelation it is necessary to "wash" and "ream" when going back to bottom after coming out of the hole. (6) In many -instance. it has been found to be extremely difficult and expensive to 1111 production packers 2nd tubing in moderately deep oil wells which had been drilled with a lime-base drilling fluid. In such instances-the original mud had apparently "set" to a consistency approaching that of a weak cement. CAUSES OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE GELATION Extensive test; have indicated that a lime-base mud does not develop a highly gelled condition at temperatures below 250°F. whereas above that temperature such condition often develops rapidly. (Fig. 1) concurrently. the following changes are evident ill the mud: (1) The alkalinity of the mud decreases to a very low value. with both caustic soda and lime being consumed. (2) The quartz content of the mud decreases sharply. (3) The bentonitic content of the mud decreases or di-appears, with concurrent decrease or loss of base exchange capacity of mud solids. (4) New compounds formed in the mud have been found to be cal-cium silicate, calcium aluminum silicate, and calcium sodium aluminum silicate. (5) The mud loses the ability to form a filter cake of low permeability. The above characteristics have been discussed, in part. by other authors

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district, with proven recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 Mg (2.4 million oz) of gold, has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell mine, is a 70130 joint venture between Freeport Gold Co. and FMC Gold Corp., both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and FMC Corp. The Jerritt Canyon district is located in the center of the Independence Mountains in north-central Elko County, Nevada, approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of the Carlin gold mine and 68 km (42 miles) north of Elko. Although the discovery of a commercial gold mine at Jerritt resulted from Freeport's exploration activities, the initial identification of a gold prospect in this area was a consequence of a program by FMC in the search for antimony. Their program was, in part, based on data in the Nevada Bureau of Mines Bulletin 61, "Antimony Deposits in Nevada." Work on the property began in 197 1 with geologic mapping followed by sampling and geochemical analyses. FMC geologists, including Robert Hawkins, Russell Hayden, and Hal Hurst recognized the striking similarity of the area to the geologic environment of Newmont's nearby Carlin gold deposit and soon focused on the gold potential. Increases in the price of gold served to stimulate interest and support for the exploration program. Geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for gold and trace elements usually associated with gold. A strong gold anomaly was found on the North Fork of Jerritt Canyon, which was called the Alchem anomaly. Drill-testing of this anomaly in 1973 revealed significant grades and thicknesses of gold mineralization in the lower portion of the Roberts Mountain formation. This initial discovery and subsequent close-spaced drilling proved the existence of several small pods of low-grade, gold-bearing material which cropped out at their up-dip edges, causing the surface anomaly. The mineralization was very encouraging, but was not, by itself, of economic importance from the standpoint of either grade or tonnage. Freeport Exploration Co. established a district office in Reno in late 1974 with responsibilities for exploration of hard minerals in the Basin and Range Province. Emphasis of the program was directed to the discovery of precious metal deposits. Enfield Bell, as District Manager for this new office, was particularly interested in the Independence Mountains and when the opportunity for a joint venture with FMC became available in 1976, it was aggressively pursued. Enfield Bell and David Stevens evaluated the FMC data and with the support of management formulated a bid in competition with 23 other companies. Freeport was selected by FMC as partner and a joint venture agreement was successfully negotiated. In mid-summer of 1976, Freeport Exploration Co. began an expanded program of detailed mapping and geochemical sampling under the direction of Bell and Stevens that led to new interpretations of the structural and alteration patterns. Hawkins' contribution during this period must be recognized since he not only was one of the original geologists assigned to the antimony and subsequently the gold investigations, but shortly after the start of the joint venture exploration, he was hired by Freeport Exploration Co. as the project geologist for the venture. Hawkins had studied the central Independence Mountains for his thesis and his understanding of the regional geology provided an excellent background for the continued exploration of the gold de- posits. His interpretation of the structure in the vicinity of the Alchem anomaly was of significant help in the Freeport exploration program. Drilling, based on this new under- standing of the geology, revealed the edge of the Marlboro Canyon ore body, which is now being exploited in the Bell mine. The processing of brines from Searles Lake, California, yields one of the world's largest supplies of borax and boron chemicals, second probably only to the massive deposit at Boron, California. Two companies produce from this deposit, the American Potash & Chemical Corp. and the West End Chemical Co., a division of the Stauffer Chemical Co. Two processes are employed in recovering borax from the brines; one is used by both companies and consists of carbonating the brine to form sodium bicarbonate, removing this, and then cooling the liquor to crystallize a crop of borax. Only American Potash uses the second process, evaporating the brine to concentrate it and remove (crystallize) much of its NaCl, Na2CO3, Na2SO4, and NaLi2PO4 content, quick cooling the remaining liquor to remove KCI, and then seeding the filtrate to remove borax. Both methods will be briefly described. Searles Lake is a large evaporite body formed during the most recent two Sierra Nevada ice stages, the Tahoe and the Tioga. Runoff waters from the Sierra Nevada Mountains collected in the large Owens Valley drainage basin and from there overflowed into the Indian Wells basin and then into Searles Lake. In each Lake, evaporation took place. To a large extent the Owens and Indian Wells lakes acted as settling basins, for much of the mud, and insoluble calcium and magnesium precipitates were deposited there. Recent volcanic activity in the mountains to the north and east of Owens Lake had scattered considerable mineral-rich volcanic ash and debris throughout the drainage area, and several hot springs were formed that contained boron and other salts. The present flow rate and concentration of several springs, and the known age of at least the Tioga zone, can fairly well account for all of the boron present in Owens and Searles Lakes.1 The tungsten content can be accounted for in a similar manner.2 Most of the salts thus originally present in the fresh water runoff-from ice, snow, and rain-accompanying these two ice stages were ultimately deposited in Searles Lake. During the Tahoe period, from 25 to 40 ft of massive, mixed salts were deposited, along with six interspersed layers of mud (four inches to two feet thick) representing comparatively brief interglacial periods. Before the final desiccation of the lake, from 10 to 14 ft of new mud was deposited, representing the Tioga stage. The crystals subsequently deposited were from 70 to 90 ft thick, and form the present lake surface. The extent of the salt body is about 34 square miles, of which 12 square miles are exposed salt; the remaining area is covered by recent alluvial deposits (chiefly mud). The present lake is generally dry on the surface but floods to a shallow depth following heavy rains. The crystal body of both zones consists of continuous clusters of salts, and the voids between crystals (about 45 pct of the total volume) are occupied by brine. The level of this brine never recedes more than several inches below the salt surface. The brine pumped to the plants for processing is generally saturated with all of the solid phases present in that area, and thus is a complex mixture containing about 35 pct solids (see Table 3). The brine composition varies somewhat at different areas of the lake and from upper to lower structures, so wells are drilled in the areas and to the depths desired. A casing is cemented in the hole to within a short distance from the bottom, and pumps with about 14-ft suctions are mounted on the casing to pump the brine into the plants. If the safety factor of a mine hoisting rope is checked for the lowest depth, is the rope then safe for all levels? The answer here is no. A new set of volues is proposed. HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper. The safety factor of a hoisting rope as defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines' is the ratio of the static load to the tensile strength of the rope. It is calculated by dividing the breaking strength of the rope* In Fig. 1 curves A and B are plotted against the vertical suspended distance, which is the abscissa, and the factor of safety, the ordinates. Curve C is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of curve A and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety for new rope for any particular depth. Curve D is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of Curve B and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety when ropes should be discarded for any particular depth. If a new rope were applied with a minimum factor of safety, then the vertical distance or ordinate under curve D for any particular depth, divided by the vertical distance or ordinate under curve C, would represent the minimum percent of remaining area intact that could be allowed before the rope would be discarded. Also, that section of the ordinate between curve C and curve D is proportional to the section of the area of the new rope that could be allowed for wear and broken wires. Considering that point at 2500 ft on the chart, the ratio do to co would be the minimum percent of rope area remaining at the point of discard. The ratio of that portion of the ordinate cd to co would represent maximum percent of area of a new rope available for wear and broken wires.

Nearly 55 years have elapsed since the U. S. Geological Survey was organized. During this period the mineral industries have grown from infancy or early childhood to well developed maturity, and some mining industries appear to be declining. Decline in mining is even more conspicuous in certain districts, or even states, than in any mining industry as a whole, and discoveries or developments of important new districts have been very few in recent years. Our reserves of most metals and nonmetals are adequate for many years of normal production, subject to changes in rate of exploitation that may be caused by foreign competition and by changes in technology and market conditions; but the declining production of many districts and the scarcity of important new discoveries to compensate for them is cause for some apprehension. It is likely that future production will depend to a considerable extent on deep exploration and on the thorough examination of places in and adjoining existing districts where significant outcrops are lacking and only apparently insignificant geologic features offer encouraging clues—more so than on the discovery of entirely new districts. Even the possible discovery of new districts, which have escaped the intensive search by the nontechnical prospector, must be dependent on geologic information. There is therefore no need for argument as to the value of geology to the mining industry; and the need of continuing to advance the science. The U. S. Geological Survey's past contributions to mining geology, as expressed in its official reports and other publications, are recognized by Ransome in his historical review of mining geology in the Lindgren volume.' These contributions have helped to form the basis of modern mining geology, which has grown rapidly in the last 25 years. This growth has witnessed the organization and maintenance of geologic staffs by mining companies in several districts, and their detailed work, together with the fact that nearly all of the larger mining districts have

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. comprises a Gold Division at Joutel, Quebec, and a Silver Division at Cobalt, Ontario. In 1979 the Silver Division milled 41,700 mt (46,000 st) of ore at a recovered grade of 139 g per mt (4.06 oz per st) for a production of 5,816 kg (187,000 oz) of silver. The 100 -year -old mining, camp of Cobalt has long been noted for its high-grade silver ores, and now seems to be on the threshold of being revived with several companies operating in the area. In 1979, the Gold Division milled at the rate of 27,200 mt per month (30,000 st) and processed 333,000 mt (367,000 st) at a grade of 6.58 g per mt (0.192 oz per st) with a mill recovery of 91.670 to produce 2,013 kg (64,700 oz) of gold. The average total cost per ton milled was $22.10 per mt ($20.05 per st) which was $3.66 per g ($1 13.90 per 0s). These figures make Agnico-Eagle one of the lowest cost producers in North America. Gold occurrence in the Joutel ore is fine-grained and contained within sulfide facies composed mainly of pyrite with minor pyrrhotite. Two underground mining methods are employed with long hole stoping accounting for about 75% of the ore mined and shrinkage stoping the remainder. Ore from underground is hoisted into a 545 mt (600 st) coarse ore bin from where it is conveyed to a 45 mt (50 st) surge bin ahead of the 10-51 Hydrocone crusher. Crushed ore is then screened to make a 13 mm (112 in.) product with the oversize being recrushed in a 7-60 Hydrocone. Mill feed is conveyed to two 900 mt (1,000 st) fine ore bins. The Hydrocones were installed as part of a new crushing plant in March of 1980 and have contributed substantially to an increase in mill capacity. Space has been left to install a third crusher in the future. The fine ore bins discharge to a 2.75 m by 3.66 m (9 ft by 12 ft) rod mill, followed by a 3. 7 m by 5.5 m (12 ft by 18 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a Krebs 380 mm (15 in.) cyclone to produce a 7070 minus 37 micron (400 mesh) .flotation feed. This pulp is first treated in a 34 cu m (1, 200 cu ft) Maxwell flotation cell and then in an additional twelve 2.8 cu m (100 cu ft) cells. Combined flotation concentrates are reground to 9070 minus 37 microns (400 mesh) in a 1.8 m by 4.9 m (6 ft by 16 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a single Krebs 254 mrn (10 in.) cyclone. Flotation tailings are sent to the tailings dam. Reground concentrates are then aerated with lime to a single Pachuca and thickened in a 16.75 m (55 ft) diameter thickener with the addition of diesel fuel to render any activated graphite inert to adsorption of
