THE WORK OF THE DRILLER and of the oil geologist is seriously handicapped by the impossibility of actually seeing what is going on inside a borehole as it is being drilled. Visual information of the position and condition of the casing, and of the characters and attitudes of strata passed through would be of inestimable benefit. The best substitute for putting a periscope down a hole is the taking of photographs of its interior at points where information is desired. An apparatus for this purpose has been constructed by Dr. Thomas Reinhold, of Heemstede, Holland, and one instrument of his design has been put into practical use by the Geological Survey of The Netherlands in searching for water. To the best of our knowledge, this instrument has not been applied to oilfield problems, although the possibility has been mentioned in the one or two brief notices of the camera which have appeared in the literature.' The purpose of presenting this description of the instrument, with some examples of its work, is to suggest that it might be adapted to serve a variety of useful purposes in American oilfields, and with the hope that discussion will bring out any modifications necessary to make the apparatus more valuable to drillers and geologists.

Phosphorus is essential to all life processes and therefore to the existence of man. In this role, there are no substitutes for phosphorus. In a commercial sense, phosphorus and its compounds are important to our entire economy, both in agricultural and in nonagricultural applications. The world's phosphate requirements are met by mining phosphate rock. Two general types of phosphate ore deposits are commercially important-igneous and sedimentary. Igneous deposits generally are more difficult and more expensive to mine than sedimentary deposits and are of importance mainly in the USSR, North Vietnam, and South Africa. Approximately 15% of current world production comes from these deposits. Over 80% of world production is from the pellet sedimentary deposits of Florida, North Africa, and elsewhere. Guano, the second type of sedimentary deposit, is produced in South America but is declining in world importance. Production Production of phosphate rock was reported in 31 countries during 1972. However, about 80% of world output is produced in three countries: the United States, the USSR, and Morocco (Table 15.2A.1). Throughout the past 20 years, between 75% and 80% of world output has been produced by these three leading countries. Between 1948 and 1972 world production increased at an average rate of 10% per year, from 21.5 to 103.9 million tons. Growth was quite steady at 6% per year through 1963, but in the 5 years from 1963 to 1968 production increased 11 1/2% per year. Since 1968 production has increased about 91/2 % annually. Since 1948 several new phosphate mining ventures have been developed in Senegal, Togo, Israel, and North Vietnam. In the same period, only one important phosphate deposit, on Makatea Island, has been mined out and closed. A number of other phosphate mining ventures are in various stages of planning and development. The most important new venture in phosphate mining is in the Spanish Sahara. New mining capacity is expected also in Syria, and serious investigation is in progress in Peru, India, Turkey, and Australia. Major expansion of existing operations is expected in Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Israel, and Jordan. Consumption Historical data on world consumption of phosphate rock are not available in detail, but world consumption of phosphate has closely paralleled world production in the past two decades. DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

Design features and operating methods at the new Ajo smelter are described in detail. Successful operation of a novel method of handling and charging wet concentrates to a deep bath type reverberatory furnace contribute to the daily production of 200 tons of anodes with good results from the standpoint of both metallurgy and economy. THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corp. is located at Ajo, Ariz. Large scale mining operations were started at Ajo in 1917, when a 5000 ton leaching plant was put in service to treat the copper carbonate ore that overlaid the sulphide ore-body. In 1924 a 5000 ton flotation plant was built to treat the sulphide ore and the leaching operation was abandoned a few years later. Changes in practice and additions to plant facilities have resulted in a gradual increase in the milling rate which now approaches 30,000 tons daily. Prior to the erection of the Ajo smelter, flotation concentrate was shipped by rail to Douglas, Ariz, where it was treated in the Phelps Dodge smelter. Construction of a one reverberatory furnace smelter to produce an average of about 200 tons per day of copper anodes at Ajo was started early in 1949. Initial heating of the reverberatory furnace was begun on June 21, 1950. Charging the furnace was started on july 8, and the first anodes were cast on July 14. Neither the anode furnace nor the reverberatory furnace has cooled since the initial firing. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the new smelter. Built primarily to eliminate the '300 mile haul of concentrate to the Douglas plant, the new smelter was designed to treat the Ajo concentrate, with a minimum of capital investment. A novel, and relatively simple, method of concentrate handling and furnace charging made unnecessary the installation and operation of expensive storage facilities and reclaiming equipment, and obviated the necessity of holding in storage large quantities of copper-bearing materials. (Patents are pending in the United States and abroad on the Ajo process.) In the selection and arrangement of equipment, consideration was given to the full utilization of all smelting facilities, reducing the amount of idle equipment to a minimum. The layout of the smelter is shown in Fig. 2. The important problem of internal transportation was minimized by arranging the reverberatory furnace, converters, and anode furnace in a compact group and providing storage bins inside the smelter building, within reach of overhead cranes, for fluxing materials and other supplies needed in the daily operation. This can be seen in the sectional view of the smelter given in Fig. 3. Incorporated in the design were many innovations in smelting equipment intended to facilitate operations and effect economies in maintenance expense and manpower requirements. Table I gives operating data of the entire plant. Metallurgy The metallurgical practice at Ajo is based essentially upon the use of a single, deep bath reverberatory furnace for smelting wet concentrate, without concentrate storage facilities. The large reservoir of slag and matte maintained in the furnace serves to equalize, to some extent, the day to day variations in the nature and grade of concentrate and permits

IN the past few years several papers have appeared dealing with different aspects of the oxidation of dilute alloys, especially with respect to the formation of internal oxides or subscales. Subscale has been defined1 as that layer or zone of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic metal in which the oxide particles are dispersed uniformly and occur by diffusion of the oxygen inward from the metal surface. Alloys composed of a solvent metal more noble than the alloying elements are subject to subscaling or internal oxidation. In these alloys the solute must be present in such quantities that if the alloy is exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperatures, the rate of diffusion of the oxygen into the metal will be greater than the rate of diffusion of the solute outward. There is a composition range of the iron-silicon system that falls into this classification. Knowledge of the nature and rates of oxidation of iron-silicon alloys is of great commercial importance, but very little information of this nature is available. Darken2 recently has made calculations to show the limits of concentration of silicon for which subscales are produced in iron-silicon alloys; however, the main thesis of his paper was to analyze and to explain the already existing data. The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of com position, temperature, time, and atmosphere on the type of scale-metal layer obtained and to give some qualitative indication of the effect of these variables on the rates of oxidation. Since this paper is a study of silicon steels that are available commercially, extremely low-silicon and high-silicon alloys are not included. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in the experiment were taken from heats of silicon steel that ranged in analysis from 0.70 to 5.8 per cent silicon. This composition range takes in most of the commercial silicon steels. In Table I are listed the compositions of alloys used. Other than iron and silicon, the alloys normally contained approximately the following impurities: carbon, 0.03 per cent; manganese, 0.07; phosphorus, 0.008; sulphur, 0.02; copper, 0.07; tin, 0.01, and from nil to a trace of chromium, nickel and copper. All of the alloys used were melted in open-hearth furnaces, except where otherwise noted, and were hot-rolled to 0.100-in. plate. Samples approximately 1/2 in. square were then cut from these materials. So that the surface conditions of the samples used for oxidation would be standardized, each sample was ground through 000 emery paper immediately before oxidation. Two different techniques were employed in carrying out the oxidizing treatments. One consisted simply of heating the samples with free access to air. THE organization of the Board of Directors was effected Tuesday afternoon in ' executive session. Messrs. Bassett,. Buehler, Cates, Daveler, Eavenson, Eilers, Elliott, Evans, Guess, Lovejoy, Moulton, Rickard, Tally, Turner,, Wraith and Wright being pres¬ent. Messrs. Tally, Bassett, Rickard, Mathews and Cates were chosen to form the Executive Committe with Mr. Tally as Chairman, and Messrs. Krumb, Guess and Moulton for the Finance Committee with Mr. Krumb as chairman. Karl Eilers was reelected as Treasurer and H. Foster Bain as Secretary, after which the Directors adjourned for the usual dinner reported elsewhere. At the open session of the Board, at which in addition Messrs. Allen and McAuliffe were present, the work of organization was continued with appointments to committees as listed herewith. Various actions of the Executive and Finance Committees were confirmed, the budget for 1931 formally approved, the meeting dates for the year adopted, 34 new Members and Associates, 13 Junior Members and 31 Student Associates admitted by election and transfer and 29 resignations accepted.

The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution.

AT the time this matter first came up in 1912, the National Malleable and Steel Castings Co. had seven basic-bottom open-hearth furnaces in its plant at Sharon, Pa., using fuel oil, then costing about 2 ½ ¢ per gallon. The fuel was satisfactory but its cost fluctuated widely, therefore the use of pulverized coal, which had been successful in the cement industry and in some metallurgical furnaces, was suggested. After a thorough investigation, and an actual trial on one of the open-hearth furnaces, to be certain that the siliceous ash in the coal would not seriously affect the basic slags, the management of this company approved its adoption and a complete installation was started. The conclusion had been reached that the success of the operation depended on pulveriz-ing the coal to greater fineness than had thus far been accomplished, and all equipment was chosen with this in mind. A coal drier was deemed essential, and one of ample capacity and efficiency was selected, which has done all that was expected of it, working without failure and with very small maintenance cost, and is still in operation.

Since Bohler discovered, in 1903, on cooling certain alloy steels, the phenomenon of a new and lower temperature transformation than the usual Ar 3-2-1 obtained by increasing the maximum temperature to which the material was heated, much has been published1 connecting this phenomenon with a large number of dissimilar steels of high alloy content. From the fact that the transformation divides itself, taking place at two widely separated temperatures, it has been called a "split transformation." The significant facts established by recent investigators2 are: that when the transformation occurs at the higher temperature Ar1, troostite or a decomposition product is formed, and that when the transformation occurs at the lower temperature Ar", the resulting structure is martensite. The terminology Ar' and Ar" adopted here is that of Portevin. Previous Investigations Reviewing the work on this subject published in a recent issue of Revue de Metallurgie and referring in particular to his statement that martensite is a solution of carbide in alpha iron, Le Chatelier says :4 "How then can a theory already 20 years old demand new investigations? The reason for it is that we have not succeeded in proving directly the real presence of the transformation of iron during the very short duration of the quenching. BEFORE me is a colored mining-claim map of the productive portion of the Robinson Mining district-sometimes called the Ruth-Kimberly area-that lies a few miles west of Ely, Nevada. It covers an area of 20 sq mi and at the end of 1954 had produced just under 2,000,000 tons of copper and about 2,000,000 oz of gold as a by-product. The three principal colors on the map and the meaning of each are: Red -Property of the Nevada Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, formerly known as the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. Yellow -Property of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation. Green --Consolidated Coppermines property under lease to Nevada Mines. The striking feature of the map is the crazy-quilt intermingling of the colors and the tendency of property lines to intersect ore bodies. For example, the westerly one-fourth of Nevada Mines' Copper Flat pit, source of most of the ore,up to date, is in Coppermines property. Nearly half of Nevada Mines' Veteran pit is on leased claims; and Nevada's new Deep Ruth shaft is on a right of way on ground originally owned by Coppermines. CRUSHING has always been a major operation in the chemical and metallurgical industries, yet little is known about the theory of crushing, and today, the design of crushers is still based almost entirely on empirical knowledge and accumulated practical experience. In view of the increasing national need for the economic working of poorer grades of ores, the lack of a fundamental under- standing of this unit operation hardly presents a satisfactory situation. Basic investigations of crushing have been concerned mainly with three phases of the problem, 1-the mechanism of the fracture process itself, 2- the particle size distribution of the crushed product, and 3-the relationship between the energy input and the amount of new surface produced. Probably adequate information on these phases will be required for a comprehensive understanding of the process of crushing. A bibliography covering these phases will be given as well as a review of the work done in recent years at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between the energy input for crushing and the amount of new surface produced.

WHEN the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses" of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract-a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process. of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as -the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

MECHANIZATION in coal mining is a phrase which has attracted world-wide attention, and those persons not engaged on the practical side of coal-mine operations seem to regard mechanization as a panacea for many difficulties of the industry. The term "mechanization" as now employed by experienced mining men is restricted to mean mechanical loading of coal at the face. In a broader sense mechanization in coal mining was begun nearly half a century ago with the introduction of compressed-air undercutting machines and locomotives and, later, of electrically operated locomotives, undercutting and shearing machines, and drills. The use of coal-cutting machines, which has increased until now about three- fourths of the bituminous coal produced is being mechanically cut, first displaced hand-picking except in a few long-wall mines, and later gradually displaced the dangerous and coal-smashing method of blasting-off- the-solid.

PONCA CITY proved an ideal selection as a place of meeting for the Petroleum Division this fall. The accommodations at the Conoco Club were just what was required for such a gathering; the committee having the arrangements in charge functioned with the efficiency of veterans and the enthusiasm of neophytes; and the members and guests followed the speakers with close attention, entered the subsequent discussions with gusto, and divulged the "low-down" at private conferences. No one minded the drizzling rain on the first day, which only served to keep up the attendance in the auditorium; the weather then cleared up in time for a group picture before the gathering went their separate ways.

MEXICO embraces one of the great metal and petroleum producing provinces of the world. In this respect its history dates back to the overthrow of the Aztec empire by a Spanish force under Hernando Cortes between 1519 and 1.521. Even before then, its richness in silver and other minerals was not unknown. But it was a treasure house for the Spanish conquerors until the country became independent in 1821. It has been computed that in the 400 years following 1521, Mexico yielded 1.55,000 metric tons of silver, worth $3,000,000,000, two-thirds of the entire world production. In 1935 the country accounted for 36 per cent of the world's silver output, 14 per cent of its antimony (in 1934), 13 per cent of its lead, 3 per cent of its zinc and copper, and 21/2 per cent of its petroleum. Contrary to the impression of some, its gold output is now comparatively small, though important in the past. Its oil, as well, formerly hulked much larger than now, in 1921 being one-fourth of the world output.

This paper describes the fluo-solids roaster and acid plants at the new 40,000-TPY Trepca electrolytic zinc plant. The electrolytic zinc plant units were constructed to the design of Singmaster and Breyer, New York and began operation in mid-1967. The fluo-solids roaster plant, constructed according to the design of Dorr-Oliver, Paris, includes concentrate handling and storage facilities; two independent concentrate roasting circuits, each with a 110 to 155 TPD fluo-solids roaster; waste heat boilers; cyclones; electrostatic precipitators; calcine coolers; and calcine conveyors. The acid plant uses the "Petersen system" contact process. The plant has one acid circuit with a capacity of 230 tons of monohydrate per day. Gases for the acid plant are obtained from roasting zinc concentrates. When the roaster plant is operating at maximum capacity, excess SO2 is used in two other Petersen System circuits in the near vicinity.

Iwo major studies of the Fe-Cr-C system are available in the literature. The earlier one of Kinzel and crafts' forms the basis for the data most commonly quoted in works of reference (e.g., Metnls HandDook) though the later work of Bungardt el a1.' is more extensive and amenable to analysis in terms of isothermal sections and so forth. However it is evident from examination of either of these studies that the delination of phase boundaries on the basis of the data obtained can only be very approximate. Indeed in several instances the data are so inconclusive that this delineation is a matter of opinion. This note is to report an analysis of experimentally determined carbon activity data in this system, which, originally intended as a means of checking the self-consistency of the data for a number of alloys, enables some conclusions to be drawn concerning the 10503C isothermal section of the iron-rich corner of the system as deducible from the data of Bungardt

(written discussion*) .-I have never seen in print anything that even remotely has approached this article in clearness and important conclusions in conjunction with work done on the sink-and-float test. I have had many hundreds of these tests made and on different specific gravity solutions and the resultant product analyzed, but I have never grasped nor been able to show what this article sets forth. This article brings out one factor very clearly to my mind; what is to take the place of the solutions of different specific gravities used to obtain the laboratory results, when it comes to washing on a large scale, since water has one constant weight only? The answer is, sizing of coal. And as we know the importance of size versus specific gravity of the material to be washed, perhaps defined (practical) lines can ultimately be gotten up so that the sizing, if any, may be determined at the same time as the laboratory work on the coal is being done. (written discussion?).-The authors' deductions are well founded and although they disclaim any wide experience in commercial coal washing, practically all of the data presented are applicable to coals of all parts of this country. The paper clearly sets forth the great necessity of careful preliminary investiga-tion of each contemplated washery undertaking and contains the follow-ing very true statements. "It is not safe to assume that any coal which can he successfully washed on coarse coal jigs can be cleaned more com-pletely by washing at a finer size on tables," and "The effect of finer crushing upon the completeness with which impurities may be separated from coal depends upon two opposing tendencies. First, that the more finely a raw coal is crushed, the more completely will the particles of impurities be detached from the particles of clean coal. Second, the finer a coal is crushed the more difficult it becomes to separate the pieces of clean refuse from the pieces of clean coal."
