Cykler, Secretary-Treasurer, informs us that the Engineering Societies Club of Hawaii has been established, and that a member of any one of the following organizations is eligible for membership in the Hawaiian club: American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers, American Railway Engineering Association, American Society for Testing Materials. The main purpose of this club is the entertainment of visitors from the various national organizations above mentioned, and the Secretary will be glad to hear from any one who is making a trip to the Hawaiian Islands. The art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates hack to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal developmcnt has taken place during the past 30 years. To Stephen R. Erom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contrib'ution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the mova, ble roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as, for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springe, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. It has remained, however, for the boldness and originality of Mr. Edison to extend the field of crushing-rolls in two new directions, and to cause them to ex-

The fatigue behavior of three SAP alloys was studied in ternzs of strain rate and temperature, at high strains. The k values in the modified Manson-Coffin equation, Nk4 = C, were less than 0.5 under all test conditions, and change with strain amplitude for the lower-oxide alloys at about 2 pct strain. Lowest k values were near 0.25. Strain rate had no effect on life at 80 F, but had an increasingly greater effect with increasing temperature above 500". Life decreased with decreasing strain rate, above 500"F, and with increasing temperature. Ductility at fracture in a tension test was indicated to be an important factor in determining 1ife in these big+-strain tests with the SAP alloys. INEVITABLY, in the course of mechanical tests at elevated temperatures, particularly if significant time at temperature is involved, there are large changes in structure; these changes make it difficult to relate behavior patterns over ranges of temperature or strain rates at high temperatures. Such changes are to be expetted in low cycle fatigue at low strain rates and high temperatures. Accordingly, it was of great interest to examine the low cycle fatigue behavior of SAP / an aluminum oxide dispersion-strengthened aluminum, a type of alloy which had shown unusual structure stability to temperatures as high as 1000" to 1150°F and resisted recrys-tallization essentially to the melting temperature.'j3 Since the matrix is pure aluminum, there are no complications of averaging, agglomeration, or phase solution. It was also desirable to check the Manson-Coffin equation4?' for the SAP alloys, namely N~E~ = , where ep is the total plastic strain amplitude, k and C are constants, and N is the number of cycles to failure. Here, too, was an opportunity to check the roles of temperature and strain rate with a very stable material. Tavernelli and coffin6 had concluded that k had a value of about 0.5 for many alloys and C was equal to ~/2, where E is the fracture ductility determined from a static tension test. The results were obtained from low-temperature tests where creep and diffusion processes are unimportant. Manson7 found k = 0.6 fitted his data reasonably well; however, in later analyses of a large amount of low cycle fatigue data generated at room temperat~re@"~ he found k to vary from 0.6 for short lives to 0.21 for long-life fatigue tests. In the latter studies,89g Manson separated the total strain range into elastic and plastic components when he found that k was influenced by the nature of the strain. The use of EL (total strain) instead of EP (total plastic strain)4'5 makes a difference in the resultant k value. The ratio of changes with temperature, strain rate, and strain; further, there are the problems in the determination of the elastic strain. Based on these considerations, and the improved fit of points in a plot of by Wells and Sullivan,' is also utilized in these studies. Anderson and wahl,14 using commercial 1100 aluminum, and Blucher and Grant,15 using 99.99 pct pure aluminum, found an increase in life with increasing test temperature. Anderson and Wahl were the first to report low cycle fatigue results from SAP materials. With increasing temperature, the role of strain rate becomes more important. In this regard, care must be exercised to differentiate between frequency (wherein strain rate may vary from zero to a maximum in each cycle, sinusoidally, for example), and constant strain rate, as used in the present study, in a saw-tooth type cycle; in the latter case, the frequency is not specified but can easily be calculated from the strain and strain rate data. It has generally been found that life in low cycle fatigue tests decreases with decreasing frequency16 or with decreasing strain rate at elevated temperatures.15 Coffin,17 reviewing Eckel's work,16 also reported that k increased with decreasing frequency for acid lead, yielding values from 4.0 at a frequency fo 6.6 cycles Per day to 1-46 at a frequency of 7440 cycles per day; the value of k decreased to 0.58 at a frequency of 2.38 x lo6 cycles per day. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three SAP alloys, of two nominal compositions, were tested. Alcoa supplied XAP 005 as 2-in.-diam extruded bar, of nominal composition A1-7 wt pct A1203. The Danish Atomic Energy Commission supplied SAP 930 (A1-7 wt ~ct Ala3) and SAP 865 (A1-13 wt pct Al&) manufactured by Swiss Aluminium Ltd., in the form Of $-in.-diam extruded rod. Metallographic comparison of the structures of XAP 005 and SAP 930 showed the former to have a more uniform oxide distribution. Button-head specimens were machined in the longitudinal direction of the bar with 0.4 in. gage length by 0.2 in. diameter, with a fillet radius of j-B in. After machining, the specimens were electropolished in a 1 to 4 mixture of perchloric acid to methanol to remove all machining marks. All test bars were in the as-extruded condition. The fatigue tests were performed on a hydraulically activated, axial strain machine, with complete reversal of strain.15 Test conditions were:

THE use of stone as a building material in relatively large blocks is recorded in ancient historical records but only within the past 200 years has broken stone in small sizes begun to have extensive use, principally in highway construction. Tresaguet, in 1764, describing his method for highway construction in France, required the top surface to be built of stone about the size of a walnut, broken by the use of a hammer. It is said that the Romans, in the top layer of their rather massive roads, used large stones bonded together with lime mortar and bedded in small stones mixed with mortar. Much of the early macadam as built by McAdam around 1815 in England was made with hand-sledged broken stone. In 1858, the use of crushed or broken stone received a great impetus from the invention in that year by Eli Whitney Blake of what is said to be the world's first stone crusher. As a consequence of that invention, stone could be crushed to small sizes with considerable ease and, as a natural result, the use of crushed stone in macadam roads and as railroad ballast increased at a great rate. Also, as portland cement came into use, machine-produced crushed stone furnished readily available aggregate. Rapidly, other uses developed, such as for fluxstone in the production of pig iron and for other metallurgical operations and chemical utilizations. These utilizations made for the rapid growth of the crushed-stone industry and this growth is still proceeding with the growth of population and the development of new uses, notably the employment of limestone for the improvement of soils for agricultural purposes. The industries of which the production of crushed stone is a part have a tonnage second only to that of mineral fuel in the mineral industries of this country.

Iron ores occur in such a wide variety of forms that nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge, and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is considered desirable depends on political and economic considerations, on transportation and markets, on the characteristics of the orebody, on the metallurgy of the ore, and on its comparison with other available ores. In North America, materials that can be efficiently processed into high grade concentrates and pellets are now the object of most exploration work. These are usually shallow, relatively unoxidized, metamorphosed iron formations that are particularly suitable for geophysical methods of exploration. Magnetic surveys are used for the direct discovery of new orebodies, for mapping stratigraphy and structure, and at times to locate oxidized zones in magnetic iron formation. Gravity mapping provides supplementary information, indicates gross tonnages, is useful in regional studies, and can discover non-magnetic orebodies. Electrical methods have not been fully exploited but self-potential, resistivity, applied potential, electromagnetic and perhaps induced polarization surveys all have restricted but highly useful applications. The use of all geophysical techniques promises to increase as the number of exposed easily discoverable orebodies decreases. A high consumption of steel, and consequently of iron ore is the chief characteristic of an industrial society and this consumption has been increasing at an average rate of about 35% every ten years for the past century. To supply this demand, iron ores and iron bearing materials in a wide variety of forms have been exploited on every inhabited continent and in nearly every country. Nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is con-

A massive mudslide blocked a river in Utah, impounding a 61 m (200 ft) deep lake. Under emergency conditions, a system was designed and constructed to: (1) drain the impounded lake; and (2) provide a permanent diversion for the river around the mudslide. The system consisted of a low level tunnel, a connecting vertical shaft daylighting close to the lake shore, control valves mounted within the tunnel, and an inlet channel between the lake and the shaft. This paper focuses on the problems and concerns surrounding the inlet channel excavation and the stabilization of the remaining vertical rock walls.

This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater system in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not, been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economi-cally prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established.

INTRODUCTION During the Bicentennial Year in the United States of America, recognition should be given to the fact that 20 years ago the first large-scale commercial pelletizing plant was started and attained rated capacity. This was the beginning of a new industry. Twenty years ago the total production of pellets was principally from pilot plant facilities and totaled in the thousands of tons per year. At the present time the world production is slightly in excess of 280 million tons per year. This truly is a tremendous growth for any industry. Such a production growth obviously is accompanied by a similar growth pattern in the development of process, equipment, and facilities. During the growth and development period, different materials became more adaptable for processing. For example, initially the pelletizing of iron ores revolved around the magnetite concentrates where the heat of reaction constituted a very important part of the process fuel. During this growth period, specular hematite, earthy hematite, mixtures of hematite and magnetite, and even non-ferrous type materials were pelletized, a function previously thought not practical. The demand for the use of pellets has also broadened their concepts. At first they were made to replace the high-grade iron ores used in blast furnaces. Nowadays, not only have they replaced iron units, but they have had a major influence on the design of larger blast furnaces and have contributed to production rates in excess of 10 000 tons per day from a single furnace. They have also been used in the manufacture of steel, principally for coolants in the BOF practice. More recently, with the improved beneficiation techniques that have been developed over the same period of time, pellets have been used for the direct reduction process and can be used directly

PUBLIC discussions of mine finance in the tech-nical press have been confined mainly to methods of providing funds for the development of pros-pects or other mining operations which have not reached the stage of productivity. The application of modern financing methods to mines which have behind them a successful record of net earnings has, for some reason, been given scant consideration by mine owners and managers. In a few conspicuous cases, such for example as the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chile Copper Co., and one or two others, industrial finance has been applied to mining operations on the scale and after the fashion of other operations. When extensions are needed re-course is usually had, however, to the sale of common stock, with the obvious disadvantage of diluting the holdings of every stockholder of record prior to such financing. In some cases, it has been sought to over-come this disadvantage by issuing stock purchase rights to shareholders of record. If the stockholder is in a position to acquire additional stock, he may then pre-serve his interest intact, otherwise he must suffer a dilution of his holding. If he purchases additional stock he is, from one point of view, paying more for his in-terest than he bargained for when he made his original purchase. In many cases development and equipment are paid for out of surplus or current earnings. It is sometimes most difficult to explain to a manager why he can afford to borrow money when funds are available from a sur-plus account. Nevertheless, industrial enterprises with adequate surplus accounts often finance new construc-tion by the issuance of bonds. Such a procedure enables the company to maintain its surplus intact, and to con-tinue the payment of dividends during a temporary period of unusual expenditures.

SELF-DIFFUSION of cobalt has been investigated by Ruder and Birchenall,1, 2 Nix and Jaumot,3 and Gruzin.4 The results for a given tem- perature differ by a factor of about six in the extreme cases with no really close agreement between any two sets of data. The first two groups of investigators employed the decrease of surface activity method. Since Ruder and Birchenall have shown that the values obtained from this method are sensitive to the surface preparation, it seemed desirable to perform a few check experiments by a method not open to this objection.

URANIUM plant operations of the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries at Shiprock, N. M., began in December 1954. As originally designed, the plant treated Plateau carnotite ores by the acid cure process, which dissolved both uranium and vanadium minerals. After 16 hr of acid curing, the ore was conveyed to an agitator and leached for 2 hr in acid liquor at a pH of 1.0. The leach pulp was then separated at 100 mesh in a classifier, the sands continuing through a washing classifier circuit and the slimes going to a countercurrent decantation system of four thickeners.

Identified and utilized Arizona salt deposits are of two ages: 1) Permian in the Colorado Plateau, and 2) Tertiary in the Basin and Range country. Uses include: a) storage of energy fluids in man-made solution cavities in both Permian (Supai Formation) and Tertiary (Luke salt body) salt and b) production of marketable products by solution and evaporation of tertiary salt. The two liquid petroleum storage Projects have a combined storage capacity in excess of 380 million L (100 million gal). Current production of salt products approximates 32 kt/a (32,000 stpy). Increasing demand for both storage and salt products is anticipated.

THE property of Eureka Corp. Ltd. is located in the approximate geographic center of Nevada, 2 miles from Eureka, the county seat. The great sources of power, the Colorado, Snake, and Salmon Rivers and the rivers of northern California, are 300 to 500 miles distant, and no lines serve areas closer than 150 miles. Fuel for diesel and steam generation is available in Utah, 300 to 400 miles to the east. Eureka's railhead is 80 miles north where two trunk lines cross the county. A spur line serves Ely, 77 miles east. Good highways connect Eureka to the railheads.

MCLEAN' has shown that the total strain obtained during creep of aluminum polycrystals arises exclusively from the mechanisms of 1) microscopically observable slip, 2) subgrain tilting, and 3) grain boundary shearing. Extensive analyses, however, suggest that the high temperature creep of metal polycrystals is controlled by a single thermal activation process."" These somewhat contradictory observations might be reconciled if it could be shown that the activation energies are identical for each of the mechanisms isolated by McLean. Such identity of the activation energies, of course, would demand that the same unit process controls the functioning of each individual mechanism. Under these conditions the activation energies for creep of single metal crystals and polycrystalline aggregates and for grain boundary shearing should be identical. This paper is primarily concerned with the possible identity between the activation energies for high temperature creep of single crystal and polycrystalline metals. In addition, comparisons will also be made between the activation energies for creep of single crystals and polycrystals with previously reported activation energies for grain boundary shearing.0"8 Materials and Techniques The same high purity aluminum, lead, and tin were used in the creep tests for single crystals and polycrystalline aggregates. Single crystals of aluminum and tin were prepared by the strain-anneal technique, whereas lead single crystals were prepared by growth from the melt. The tensile creep stress was maintained constant by Chalmers-Andrade parabolic-type lever arms. Strains were measured to &0.0002 in. per in. with rack and pinion type extensometers, and temperatures were maintained to within & 0.2"C of the reported values by mercury-thermoregulated resistance-heated silicone oil baths. The previously reported unambiguous technique for determination of the activation energy for creep was employed throughout this investigation.' ." It involves periodic abrupt small changes in temperature during the course of creep, accomplished by rapidly replacing one creep bath at temperature TI by a second bath at T,. The abrupt change in creep rate from i, to & attending the abrupt change in temperature is due exclusively to the change in temperature, since both the stress and the substructure are identical the instant before and the instant after a change of temperature. Therefore, all other factors being identical where AH is the activation energy for creep and R is the gas constant. MAGNESIUM and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitional point has been set at 225°C by Schmid1 for single crystals, and at 250°°C by Morell and Hanawalt2 for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on polycrystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional temperature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheett over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig r. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Hargreaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Hargreaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors5 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformational loads. These findings have been applied

In a previous communication by one of us,1 a theory of inverse segregation was presented by which the maximum segregation and segregation distribution throughout a unidirectionally solidified, binary-alloy ingot could be calculated. The theory, which is based on the mechanism of volume contraction and interdendritic flow, quantitatively accounts for the observed maximum segregation in the A1 (rich)-CU' and Al-Zn2 alloy systems, and for the segregation distribution along the ingot lengths for the A1-Cu system.''4 One of the drawbacks to a more extensive use of the segregation equations is their complexity, particularly for the calculation of the segregation distribution throughout the length of the ingot, involving long tedious numerical calculations to obtain the segregation. Computer pro- grams, written in Fortran II for use on an IBM 1620 computer, have been developed by the authors (and are available from them), providing quick and accurate methods for the determination of the theoretical maximum segregation in any binary-alloy system, and also for the segregation distribution in any unidirectionally solidified binary-alloy ingot. The segregation distribution is controlled by the lengths of the various solidification zones'74 which are in turn controlled by the cooling rate, and are determined from temperature-distribution curves obtained during solidification. The theoretical segregation distributions shown in Fig. 1 illustrate the effect of the zone lengths on the distribution Curve 1, indicative of a slowly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having long solidification zones, while Curve 2, indicative of a rapidly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having relatively short zones. Although these distributions are calculated for an A1-10 pct Cu ingot, the shape of the distribution would be similar for any binary-alloy ingot. These curves show clearly why early workers obtained results which indicated that the maximum (chill-face) segregation approached zero at very fast cooling rates.3 Actually, the maximum segregation is independent of cooling rate,' but even at short distances from the chill face the amount of segregation drops considerably, particularly in a rapidly cooled ingot, making it very difficult to establish the amount of segregation occurring at the chill-face.
