Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherent and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. "The copper sulfide ore from the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin in Poland, which is processed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., consists of three lithological fractions: dolomitic, sandstone and shale. The copper ore, depending on the mining area, contains all fractions in different ratios. The lithological fractions differ in the particle-size distributions of their useful minerals. In the dolomitic part of the ore, most of the metal sulfide particles are 50-200 microns in size, while those in the sandstone and carbonaceous shale are 30-200 and 5-40 microns in size, respectively. This complex composition results in different mineralization, physicochemical properties and, in particular, upgrading selectivity. Due to the specific nature of the examined copper ore, two of the crucial parameters determining the beneficiation efficiency are size and liberation of sulfide particles. We analyzed the influence of grain size of feed on scavenging selectivity in one of the KGHM flotation plants and performed evaluation and analysis of the upgrading results of industrial beneficiation of the ore, containing mostly dolomite and shale. The upgrading efficiency was estimated using a selectivity indicator obtained by means of the Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which was then correlated with the particle-size distribution of the flotation feed.IntroductionFroth flotation is used extensively in commercial ore treatment flotation plants to separate minerals from gangue and to separate minerals from each other. The floatability of ores and their benefication selectivity are determined by many factors. One of them is particle size. The effect of particle size on flotation performance has been widely studied by many authors (Gaudin et al., 1931; Trahar, 1976; Trahar and Warren, 1976; Lynch et al., 1981; Pease et al., 2004). Particle size also plays a critical role in the probability of particle collision and attachment to bubbles (Solari and Gochin, 1992; Schulze, 1993), kinetic flotation (Taggart, 1956; Ahmed and Jameson, 1985; Debacher, 2002; Brozek and Mlynarczykowska, 2007; Potulska 2008), collector consumption (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Vianna et al., 2003) and mechanical entrainment (Lynch et al., 1981; George et al., 2004; Konopacka, 2005). Most of the results have shown that there is an optimum particle size range for a given flotation system and that the simultaneous optimization of the recovery and concentrate grade of these particles in conventional flotation equipment is extremely difficult."

This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.

Preparation of briquettes by adding CaF2 reagent into the Australian iron ore powder. The structure and morphology of iron ore briquettes during various reduction stages (i.e., Fe2O3→Fe3O4, Fe3O4→FeO, and FeO→Fe) were observed via an ore microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CaF2 reacted with SiO2 to form CaO and SiF4 gas during the roasting process. The reduction swelling index decreased from 12.36 to 8.83% when the CaF2 content in the briquettes increased due to CaF2-mediated refinement of the hematite grains during the first stage of the reduction process. Lattice distortion resulting from the presence of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice during the second stage of the reduction process, coupled with an increase in the porosity of the iron ore briquettes and the formation of a low-melting-point slag phase, promoted the anisotropic growth of FeO lamellar crystals, which resulted in an increase in the reduction swelling index from 4.27 to 7.36%. During the third stage of the reduction process, the growth of iron whiskers was promoted by wüstite (FeO) lattice distortion caused by a solid solution of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice; the reduction swelling index increased from 15.61 to 24.72%, resulting in the catastrophic swelling of the iron ore briquettes.

Native sulfur occurs with barite, celestite, and bioepigenetic calcite in the Culberson, Pokorny , and Leonard Minerals deposits, Delaware basin. The sulfur in these deposits, in "castile" masses, and in deposits of the Fort S tockton district have 6 34s values between +9 and -15. Native sulfur in the caves of the Guadalupe Mountains is somewhat lighter [(634s = -15 to -25)]. Barite in the Culberson, Leonard Minerals, and Comanche Creek sulfur deposits have 63% values of +35 to +73; celestite in the Culberson and Leonard Minerals occurrences have values of +38 and +36, respectively, and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.707808 and 0.708138, respectively. Barite associated with sulfide, deposits, Guadalupe Mountains, have [634s] values of +41 to +62. Barite at Seven aeart Gap, Apache Mountains, is somewhat less enriched in heavy sulfur [(634s = +14 to +37)].

"Health and Safety problems can make a mineral deposit or a portion of one, an operating plant, or finished product unprofitable or worthless. Therefore they need to be reviewed when reserves are established and yearly thereafter until the deposit is closed down. Health and Safety regulations serve as a guide, but I have always done more frequent checks, when adding new products with different specifications or during times of bad weather and crisis. Water quality and quantity are always in question. Health and Safety are quality of life issues which are at or near the top of priorities for communities, companies, employees, and government bodies. Georgia dropped from one to three in U. S. for business development due to “Quality of Life” issues. Remember crystalline silica is present in nearly all sedimentary and acidic rocks and basic igneous rocks are the perceived home of asbestos. These health issues, any other safety and health issues or perceived issues need to be resolved initially and any time they come up during life of deposit. When handled properly good safety and health programs add to the profitability of a deposit, not to the costs. Daily safety checks in operating plants and mines, and visual check of all drilling core with an eye for changes are a key to successful programs. Both plants I turned around had terrible safety records, too much airborne dust, and maintenance problems resulting in low productivity. In almost every case cost reduction was tied to eliminating maintenance and spillage problems which caused health problems and increased possibility of accidents. Implementation of these safety and health programs around 1970 starting prior to government programs, working with new MSA/MSHA regulations, working to improve the regulations as a president of a state mining organization, and maintain profits was a challenge, but very rewarding. Reducing time to make repairs and work simplification gleaned from observations and employee recommendations learned from making multiple daily inspections resulted in years without lost time accidents at two plants, reduced maintenance and 33-75 % improvement in cost per ton at A. P. Green Refractories Co. Eufaula Calcining Plant 1972-77 and Oil-Dri Ochlocknee plant and mine 1979-82. The Ochlocknee mine worked 1981-2007 without a LTA. The author participated in 16 acquisitions and new plant design projects. All of above reduced costs allowed mining deposits with higher overburden to be used and considered. Thereby increasing reserves considered in all operations."

From 1999 through 2008, groundfall events resulted in 75 fatalities, 5,941 injuries and 13,774 noninjury roof falls in U.S. underground coal mines, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A comprehensive analysis of these events was conducted to better understand where and why these incidents occurred. The first segment of the study used the MSHA database to evaluate groundfall injury rate trends related to mining method, year, locality, seam thickness, mine size, coalbeds and seasonal effects. In the past decade, roof fall injury rates have dropped 50%, but rib fall injury rates have remained constant. Room-and-pillar mines had a roof fall injury rate that was nearly 2.5 times the longwall rate. High groundfall rates occurred in the Illinois Basin, a finding that correlates with other studies that have shown that roof rock in the Illinois Basin is weaker than that in the central Appalachian coalfields. Finally, noninjury roof fall rates in the eastern and central United States were found to be 50% higher from July through September, possibly because of the changes in humidity levels that may cause shale mine roofs to deteriorate. The second segment of the study evaluated the root causes of failure by reviewing all MSHA groundfall fatality reports for 1999-2008. Pillar recovery was the leading cause of groundfall fatalities (19%), followed by rib falls, roof skin falls and traveling under unsupported roof (16% each). Defining prominent ground control incident trends and hazards will identify areas where additional study is needed and where innovative solutions need to be developed to reduce these severe occupational hazards.

In business mining, dilution is the result of the operating parameters that occur too often and cause serious consequences to mine performance, questioning TO WHOM BENEFITS DILUTION. Mining persists in changing perception of real meaning of dilution. The lack of interrelation between mineral processes and nature compromises the understanding of dilution; this absence of interrelation occurs due to the misinterpretation of nature, otherwise, Geomimic could be helpful to filling the gap of misinformation. NATURE provides LIMITED metals in low content deposits; it is a challenge to obtain them. Nature never considers dilution. Furthermore, though dilution is a human concept, dilution is accepted and promoted. Reality of dilution is in its errors accumulation that translates into technology level or status applied in nature. It is doubtful that dilution can continue surviving if it is ?meaningless?. It will discourse: Is dilution illegal? If the change occurs in the prediction of mining will prevail a different destiny, it is important to touch the cores of the business; otherwise, it would represent repetition of the same ?negative? effects, as usual. Mining defines many losses during the disturbance of nature, from NPV elaboration to the metal recovery to commerce, demanding BETTER DESIGN. This paper introduces and applies MANAGEMENT BY LOSS, as first steps, to limit risks and uncertainties in mining. As result, the management of dilution will be obtainable under mining practices which promotes its character of SUSTAINABILITY.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

The paper will describe a number of developments and innovations now in use in microtunnelling machines. These include the use of fuzzy logic steering systems, the proven ability to successfully undertake complex curved microtunnel drives, the ability to complete ultra long drives using microtunnelling techniques, and machines with access to the face of the machine from inside the machine. The ability to tunnel in relatively hard rock utilizing a rock head with back loaded cutters changeable from inside the microtunnel machine and the ability to utilize microtunnel machines in multi modes, such as hard rock mode, “open” mode, EPB mode, and slurry mode with the same base machine again with access to the face of the machine will be described. In addition, the latest computer technology gives the operator “full visualization” of machine functions together with the ability to data log machine operating parameters. Reference will be made to a number of projects worldwide recently completed or under way where these innovations have successfully been utilized.

A mathematical model was developed for the grinding and flotation section of Union Carbide's Bishop mill and this model was used to indicate how variations in grind, retention time, and calcite and fluorite content effects the mill capacity, tungsten units produced, and the grade and recovery of the scheelite concentrate. A model such as this is a starting point in determining the economic optimum running condition for a mining and milling operation and an example of this is given.

In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately nine inches top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build- up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge. 9, (1) The buildup of a "critical size" fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as; (i) an increase in mill liner wear; (ii) wear on the steel balls, and; (iii) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit operations resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. A PC image-based on-line coarse particle size analyzer has been developed to measure particle size distributions under plant situations where overlapped particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Although previous testing had shown satisfactory performance of this image-based system for separated particle size measurements (the non-overlapped case), it was necessary to modify original algorithms in order to solve the overlap problem and make the system suitable for plant operations. On-site testing has been conducted at a large copper concentrator in the southwestern U.S. for further investigation of the overlap problem.

Many of the major international gold mining companies provide data on rates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their environmental reporting commitments. These data are evaluated by an index defined as the annual GHG emission rate in metric tons, divided by the annual amount of gold produced in grams, and referred to as GHGgold. This paper examines ranges of GHGgold values for a cross section of gold mines as a function of mining method (openpit, underground and combined operation) and ore-processing method (mill, heap leach and combined methods) for reported ranges of operational data, including annual total tons mined, ore processed and gold grade. The evaluation shows that ranges and distributions of rates of GHG emission are approximately similar across different mining methods and ore-processing methods. The data presented in this paper provide the context needed to make comparisons of GHG emissions reported in companies’ annual reports to the ranges reported for the overall gold mining industry.

The validity of the concept of mine resistance in ventilation systems is examined. Mine resistance is the proportionality constant relating the head generated by a fan and the quantity flowing through it when the fan is connected to a mine circuit. It is the total effect of all branches in the mine ventilation circuit. Its importance lies in the fact that for new mine projections, and in the extensions of existing mines, ventilation calculations are usually based upon adjustments of the mine resistance. In ventilation circuits with regulation, and/or with multi-fans, simple adjustments of the mine resistance curve do not lead to correct solutions. A ventilation system consists of several interconnected subsystems where one subsystem behavior affects that of the others, and the total system. Through a series of simple but realistic examples, the authors will demonstrate the importance of the systems concept in mine ventilation, and its practical application to coal mine ventilation planning.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned --to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health --NIOSH --the beneficiaries of each other's findings. Unquestionably, there are lines of separation. The main responsibility of the agency I represent, MSHA, is enforcement of the nation's mine safety and health laws. But we also have an additional responsibility and that is to coordinate and give priority to research in a never-ending hunt for answers.
