The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

Highly concentrated pastes of gold nanoparticles were successfully produced by use of a special kind of protective polymer and a mild reductant. Solid part of the pastes consists of up to 85wt% of gold nanoparticles, 10~30 nm in diameter, and residual protective polymer. This component can be diluted by any kinds of solvent at arbitrary rates. Electronics, optics, catalysts, colorants and surface metal coatings are possible application fields. 1. Introduction Noble metal nanoparticles are of interest in a variety of fields ? such as colorants, metal coatings, electronics(1), optics(2), and chemical catalysis(3). Especially, in the color field, the gold nanoparticle has been known as an aesthetic red colorant for stained glass and fine glassware, such as Venetian glass. The mechanism of coloring is attributed to surface plasmon absorption of gold nanoparticles(4,5). The gold nanoparticle in stained glass shows very clear red color, which is very durable for hundreds years. On the other hand, the red color of organic pigment in paint films often fades away within several years. We intended to reproduce the elegant and stable coloring of stained glass in paint films. In order to color a very thin, 20~50?m, paint film like stained glass, production of highly concentrated dispersion of gold nanoparticle is necessary. To achieve this, there were two issues to be overcome. One is how to prevent the coagulation of gold nanoparticles in highly concentrated solution. So far, several methods to prepare gold nanoparticles(6,7) were reported. But only a few methods succeeded to stabilize the gold nanoparticle dispersion at higher concentration than ppm order. The other is controlling of the particle size, this is because the color of gold nanoparticles is very sensitive to the particle size. Only when the particle size lies around 10 nm, the suspension exhibits red color like stained glass.

Cobalt occurs together with copper in the southern African copper belt, and a large portion of this cobalt ends up in copper smelting slags, mostly dissolved in oxide form. It is possible to achieve high recoveries of cobalt by reductive smelting of the copper slags, using some form of carbon as a reducing agent in an electric furnace. For example, a 40 MW DC arc furnace was operated at Chambishi Metals in Zambia from 2001 to 2008, and demonstrated cobalt recoveries of around 80% from slag to an iron-rich alloy containing copper and cobalt. The alloy was atomized prior to leaching. With the recent increase in demand for cobalt (and the resulting high metal prices), there has been increasing interest in this process route. There is also an alternative hydrometallurgical process for recovering the valuable metals from the slag. The choice between these process options requires a trade-off between capital and operating cost and environmental acceptability. This paper examines the potential for cobalt recovery from slags, and outlines various process options. INTRODUCTION Cobalt has had a number of important uses in society since antiquity, and its principal use has changed dramatically over time. Since at least 2250 BC, cobalt-based pigments (cobalt blue) have been widely used to colour manufactured goods such as glass and pottery. Later, cobalt became known for its magnetic and wear-resistant properties and high-strength alloys, and most of the cobalt produced was consumed in the production of cobalt-based superalloys. The greatest recent growth in cobalt demand is due to it being essential to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in consumer electronic devices and increasingly to drive electric vehicles. Cobalt is usually produced as a by-product of copper or nickel. The copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia supplies most of the world's cobalt production. In 2018, the DRC was expected to produce 90 000 tons of the world total of 140 000 tons of cobalt (Shedd, 2019). This paper focuses on the southern African copper industry, and specifically the cobalt that is able to be produced as a co-product from this. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN COPPER SMELTING Copper deposits in South Africa have been documented since at least 1685, when the Cape governor, Simon van der Stel, ‘discovered’ the 'Copper Mountain' at Springbok. South Africa's first public commercial mining company (imaginatively called the 'South African Mining Company') was established in Cape Town in 1846, to exploit the rich copper resources that were believed to exist in Namaqualand.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is an independent, international organization that advances for the public benefit the science of radiological protection, in particular by providing recommendations and guidance on all aspects of protection against ionizing radiation. This presentation touches on aspects of The 2007 Recommendations of the ICRP, a fundamental document that lays out the system of radiological protection for all exposure situations and types, and focuses on other recent publications relevant to the uranium industry. Of particular relevance are the 2009 ICRP Statement on Radon and the accompanying report on lung cancer risk from radon.

In 1978, the Outotec direct to blister flash (DBF) smelting process was commercialized with the commissioning of the Glogow 2 smelting facility in Poland. Since then four further DBF facilities have been constructed, two at Olympic Dam, one in Zambia and most recently one at Glogow 1 in Poland. The DBF smelting process differs considerably from conventional smelting process in both chemistry and unit operations, presenting opportunities for flowsheet capital and operating cost savings particularly when the concentrate copper grade is high. WorleyParsons has amassed considerable expertise in the Direct to Blister process and in this paper the process is compared to the modern two stage Double Flash process. The processes are modeled, and the key operating parameters, consumables and production metrics are directly compared. Subsequent flowsheets, key equipment lists and capital costs are also presented for comparison and discussion. The results show the range of concentrates which are most economically treated by the DBF process relative to those best treated in conventional processes along with those concentrates which could be treated by either process. INTRODUCTION The Outotec Direct to Blister (DBF) process was developed and installed at Glogow in 1978 (Czernecki et al., 2006). Currently there are a total of five DBFs built on three sites: Glogow No.2, Olympic Dam No.1, Olympic Dam No.2, KCM Zambia and Glogow No.1, being the most recently constructed. The DBF process was the first flash furnace process to produce blister copper and paved the way for the subsequent development of the flash converter and other continuous converting processes. Today four flash converters are in operation taking the total number of flash furnaces producing blister copper to eight. In all DBF operations it is the unique ore and concentrate composition which made selection of the DBF process the most attractive. In all cases, the concentrate is relatively high in copper but low in iron because chalcopyrite is not the major constituent. When considering smelting options for high copper, low iron concentrates a key question is then often asked, “At what point does it become economic to switch from two stage smelting and converting process to the DBF process?”

Real-time mine management solutions have evolved over time from closed, proprietary solutions, to a "system of systems" that may include a wide variety of off-the-shelf components and technologies. Modular Mining Systems has embraced open standards for their NextGen products to bridge the technology gaps between these systems. However, the remaining logical gaps must be overcome, in order to achieve truly seamless integration between discrete systems. When dealing with volatile real-time management problems, the effectiveness of business process modeling and middle-ware can break down. Scientific principles of military command and control applied to mining domain help to achieve better alignment and reach the highest level of integration. The combination of open standards and off-the-shelf hardware and software with a deliberately structured command-and-control approach provides a clear evolutionary path from ad-hoc connected systems towards real-time management of a seamlessly integrated digital mine.

A petroleum well that is not in use because it has ceased to produce oil/gas economically and dry holes are referred to as abandoned wells. Once a well is abandoned it is plugged with cement and can take anywhere from two days up to a week to cure depending on the number of plugs in the well. Since plugging a well costs capital, most wells are abandoned at the lowest possible cost and with the minimum obligations set by regulation agencies. These wells can present an enduring liability to petroleum companies. However, the depth and abundance of abandoned petroleum wells makes them an economically attractive source of geothermal energy. Geothermal energy harvested from an oil/gas well is a renewable energy source as long as it is extracted in a sustainable manner. The energy can be used to generate electricity, used directly for heating, incorporated into a water desalination process, or used by a heat pump for heating/cooling applications. In this paper we examine the possibility of extracting geothermal energy from abandoned oil/gas wells by studying the heat transfer in underground geothermal heat exchangers installed in these wells. The design configurations for the geothermal heat exchangers embedded inside a petroleum borehole can be a u-tube design or a shell and tube design (i.e. double pipe). Using in-situ gathered information from some representative petroleum boreholes, the effects of key parameters such as geothermal gradient, ground temperature values, and the flow inside of the tubes are evaluated. In order to provide a constant power production the inlet temperature can be adjusted to keep the difference between outlet and inlet temperatures equivalent. Higher differences between inflow and outflow temperatures will result in a less sustainable load put on the in-situ geothermal energy. Adding insulation to certain sections of the designs can minimize the transfer of thermal energy from the fluid to the surroundings. Insulation can also limit the thermal loss between the inflow and outflow tubes in the shell and tube design. Minimizing the energy loss of these designs leads to an increase in the outlet temperature, meaning a higher grade of heat. The sustainability of long term geothermal heat extraction is a balance between the rate at which geothermal energy is extracted and the rate at which the ground formation can replace this heat. Higher outlet temperatures can lead to a larger amount of power generation, and a higher coefficient of performance for heat pump applications.

"The prospective Tulks volcanic belt hosts five significant massive sulfide deposits, Tulks Prospect, Tulks East, Jack's Pond, Daniel's Pond and Victoria Mine, as well as numerous showings and indications throughout its 70 km outcrop length. Regionally, the 498 Ma sequence consists dominantly of felsic pyroclastic rocks and flows with interbedded mafic volcanic units and finegrained sediments, commonly graphitic. Contemporaneous granitoid rocks occur in the south half of the belt. Rocks usually display a strong NE-SW, steeply dipping, penetrative foliation and other shear-related high-strain fabrics. Facing directions are normally northwest, although there is local evidence of folding. Sulfide bodies and their alteration systems are deformed and shape-modified in the style of ambient strain.The Tulks, Tulks East and Jack's Pond prospects appear to occupy a similar stratigraphic level, on or near the contact between a thick felsic pile and an overlying broad, conductive package of graphitic sedimentary rocks. All are pyritic deposits with well-developed footwall alteration systems. The Tulks prospect comprises four polymetallic lenses totalling 750 000 t. Three lenses constituting more than 6 000 000 t of sulfide mineralization are indicated at Tulks East but only the 210 000 t ""B"" lens contains significant base metals. Jack's Pond consists of a very extensive, zoned alteration complex in which four lenses of massive to semi-massive pyrite + chalcopyrite are known. The central part of the system, characterized by Mg chlorite and carbonate, is enveloped by pervasive sericitization and capped by intensely silicified and pyritized volcanics. The sulfide lenses are interpreted as part of the footwall zone and are beneath that part of the system most likely to hostpolymetallic massive sulfides.Daniel's Pond differs from the other prospects in such fundamental ways as metal content, associated alteration and structural setting. The deposit comprises strongly tectonized, Ag-rich, Zn-Pb mineralization distinguished by a pronounced Ba-As-Sb signature. Mineralization is confined to a narrow, north-south high-strain zone which separates unstrained mafic volcanic rocks to the east from well-foliated felsic rocks. The deposit lacks an extensive alteration halo and at its north end is associated with a lens of barren, undeformed massive pyrite.The Victoria Mine deposit, the most cupriferous of the five, is related to a moderately dipping structure that separates well-foliated Tulks volcanic rocks from an overlying, less deformed volcanic sedimentary sequence that may be as young as 462 Ma. The structure is also the locus of black chlorite, dolomite and quartz alteration. Structurally remobilized precursor sulfide mineralization is one possible source for the deposit."

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. "The Young-Davidson mine is in the southeastern part of Powell township, in the district of Matachewan. It is 32 miles southwest of Kirkland Lake, 48 miles southeast of Timmins, and 25 miles by road Northwest of Elk Lake. The Young-Davidson and its neighbour, the Matachewan Consolidated mine, are the two present producing properties in the district. The Matachewan area is the southwestern extension of the Kirkland Lake belt or 'break'. The Young-Davidson mine since coming into production in 1934 has been operated by Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. ""Desultory prospecting(1) has been carried on in the Matachewan area from time to time since the discovery in 1906 of silver in James township at Elk Lake, and some gold has been found in the southeastern part of Alma township and in the central part of Cairo township. The first real interest in the area, however, was started by Jake Davidson's discovery in 1916 of gold on Davidson creek, on what is now part of the Young-Davidson property, and by Sam Otisse's discovery shortly afterwards on claims a short distance to the east, now part of the Matachewan Consolidated property. In subsequent years both of these properties were investigated by various companies; the Young-Davidson chiefly by the Porcupine Gold fields Development and Finance Company, Limited, and the Matachewan Canadian by the Colorado-Ontario Development Company, Limited, which in 1919 was reorganized under the name of Matachewan Gold Mines, Limited. Work was discontinued as the ore was considered too low in grade to be mined"". However, in 1933 Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, undertook to bring the property into production and this became a reality in 1934.The total production to the end of year 1945 was 319,185.59 oz. gold and 73,541.94 oz. silver from 3,228,845 tons of ore. This represents an average grade of $3.67, including exchange and premiums."

"The Phoenix Camp, in the Boundary Creek district of southern British Columbia, produced before 1920 about 15 million tons of ore averaging more than l ·5 per cent copper, about 0.03 ounces per ton in gold, and 0·5 ounces per ton in silver. Attwood Copper Mines Ltd. conducted an exploration program in the Phoenix area from 1951to1953.Publications on the camp are listed in the bibliography. Brock's work was not sufficiently detailed to unravel the structural and stratigraphic pro bl.ems. The shale contains conglomerate lenses, which become more abundant and thicker toward the top, and grades upward into Brooklyn conglomerate. Ripple marks indicate that the shale is right side up."

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf, Inc., Operates the Kidd Creek Mine, Concentrator and Zinc Plant at Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled to produce concentrates of copper, zinc, lead and tin. The ores are processed at the Concentrator in three separate individual milling circuits, each with the capacity to treat up to 3500 tons per day. Two circuits treat copper-zinc ore 1t an average combined rate of 6500 tons per day and the third circuit treats 3500 tons per day of silver-lead zinc ore. Conventional crushing, grinding and flotation procedures are followed. The purpose of this paper is to describe Ecstall's experience with rubber mill linings in the grinding circuits.CrushingBoth ores are crushed to minus 6 inches at the Mine and delivered by rail to the Concentrator where they are reduced by secondary and tertiary crushing to minus 5/8 inch.GrindingThe crushed ores are prepared for selective flotation by grinding with rod mills and two stages of ball milling. flotation circuit middling products are reground in regrind mills prior to further treatment. A typical flowsheet of one of the grinding circuits is shown in Figure 1.All the grinding units are Allis-Chalmers Mills. The rod mills are 10 1/2 feet diameter by 16 feet long. Both the primary and secondary ball mills are 12 feet diameter by 18 feet long and all regrind mills are 6 feet diameter by 12 feet long. The primary mills are charged with 1 13/16 inch forged balls. Secondary mills are charged with 1 1/2 inch forged balls and the regrind mills are charged with 1 inch forged balls. All cyclones are Kreb units. The primary cyclones are Dl5B hydrocyclones, the secondary cyclones are D6B hydrocyclones and all regrind cyclones are D6B hydrocyclones."

The increasing energy costs associated with mining has become an issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco is undertaking a Ventilation on Demand (VOD) Project in an effort to minimize costs, continue to mine at depth and reduce green house gas emissions. A dynamic VOD system is very complex with potential high risk. Therefore, a systematic approach is being taken for successful development and implementation of the concept. The physical components of the system are currently being tested at various Vale Inco mine sites. While the operability of the physical components are being tested, the strategy for optimizing the architectures of the system is being defined. This presentation discusses the method of developing a VOD system at Vale Inco.

The Loch Lamond celestite properties in central Cape Breton Island were mined by Kaiser Celestite Mining Limited from 1970 until 1976. Poor market conditions in J976forced operations to cease. Kaiser holdings included the Lake Enon, MacRae and A mac prospects. A total of about 272,000 tonnes of raw celestite have been mined. Celestite deposits are situated in the Loch Lamond Basin, specifically in Lower Windsor sedimentary rocks. Of the five formations in the Lower Windsor Group, celestite is found in the upper four. Celestite in the Enon Formation occasionally replaces shale that separates stromatolitic dolomite columns; elsewhere in the formation it occurs in association with siltstone and gypsum. Jn the B2 Limestone Formation celestite fills pores or grades between limestone and gypsum. It replaces both limestone and silty limestone conglomerate in the Loch Lamond Formation; this limestone is of unusually high grade (60 to 70% SrSO,J for the area. Evidence indicates that the Uist Formation may hold important celestite reserves. Original celestite mineralization probably resulted from evaporation of seawater on mudflats or 'sabkhas'. Secondary mineralization also may have occurred. Strontium ions could have been leached from pre-existing concentrations and overlying gypsum, moved downdip in groundwater and combined with sulphate rich waters to deposit as celestite in porous B2 limestones.

The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness.The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock™ rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill™ system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase.The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones."

"Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots. Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confirmed largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semimassive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured. An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."
