"More than 70% of potash is produced worldwide by froth flotation. Flotation of potash was developed in the early 1930s. Amines are widely used for flotation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) and insoluble materials such as clays. Amine collector is also absorbed by clays. Therefore, clays are usually separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to flotation. Alternatively, slimes can be floated ahead of potash flotation. Flotation recoveries of sylvite are commonly in the range of 85%, while losses can occur in slimes, flotation tailings and make-up of process brine. Ores containing free coarse-grained sylvite are generally screened, whereas both fine and coarse fractions are conditioned and floated separately. The unique features of potash flotation include solubility of sylvite in water, the size of particles floated and fast kinetics. Particles up to 2.3 mm can be floated and about 50% of flotation feed can be removed in the rougher stage in few minutes. The main challenges in potash flotation are the recovery of potash from slimes, flotation efficiency in the presence of carnallite and recovery of coarse potash grains. A review of potash flotation shows that there is still room for improvement in both coarse and fine potash flotation. The present paper reviews the most significant flotation parameters including reagent type and dosage, flotation circuits, flotation equipment size and new developments in potash flotation. The latter include new reagents, flotation technologies (Hydrofloat, Jameson and column cells) larger flotation cells and slimes flotation.INTRODUCTION Potash is the common industrial term for potassium in various chemical combinations and minerals soluble in water. About 90% of potash produced worldwide is used as agricultural fertilizers. Flotation is the main treatment process of sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) ores for recovery of sylvite (KCl). Potash concentrate should contain a minimum of 95% KCl and be relatively free from 0.2 mm KCl fines. The flotation process for beneficiation of potash ores was developed in United States and Russia concurrently in the early 1930s. In 1934, Potash Corporation of America applied flotation process in a commercial scale (Tippin R.B. and Huiatt J.L). In the initial application, halite (NaCl) was selectively floated by employing lead chloride as an activator and soap as collector. The sylvite concentrate was reported in the cell underflow."

The iron ores of the Kiruna mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality except for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998, LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) analyzers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground, the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.

The increasing move to block cave mining methods (including sublevel and panel caving) to access deeper and lower grade ore deposits as near surface sources become exhausted raises questions as to the extent and magnitudes of caving-induced subsidence as it may affect strain-sensitive infrastructure on surface. Predicting these surface deformations is difficult as they tend to be discontinuous and asymmetric due to large movements around the cave controlled by geologic structures, rock mass heterogeneity and topographic effects. Of further impediment is the sparse number of case histories available, in which actual subsidence measurements are reported to provide guidance and empirical constraints for subsidence calculations. This study reports the development of an exhaustive and comprehensive database of available (i.e. public domain) subsidence data from block cave mining operations from around the world.

"The Mazowe Gold Mine is managed by Metallon Gold (Zimbabwe) and is situated in the west-central part of the Harare greenstone belt. Orebodies here generally comprise shear zones which are in-filled with gold-bearing sulphides and quartz. The mineralised zones are up to 1 m in width, have average grades of 4 to 5 g/t, and mostly dip between 10º and 60º to the north.Mazowe Mine is one of the oldest mines in Zimbabwe, and exploration and development in this region dates back to 1890, with over 1.4 million ounces of gold produced to date. Mazowe mine comprises two underground operations, Mazowe and the BSV sections. Ore is processed in a single plant which consists of conventional crushing and milling and carbon-in-leach facility.Baldmin Projects was awarded the contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the 60,000 tonnes per month plant at Mazowe mine in 2014 for the processing of sand and slimes tailings from previous operations at Mazowe mine. The average grade of the tailings is 1.1 g/t. The plant consists of feed preparation, grinding, flotation, thickening of flotation concentrate, and carbon in leach (CIL). A pump station for hydraulic mining of the slimes tailings dam also part of the plant.Key features of the Mazowe sands Plant are described and include:• Hydraulic mining of gold tailings dump.• Feed preparation section that includes a (W x L) 2.4 m wide x 4.8 m trash screen, 250 m3 surge tank, a cluster cyclones with 2 x 500 mm diam. Cyclone.• Comminution circuit designed for a bond work index range of 10-12 kwh/tonne. comminution circuit is constituted with 3 ball mills, 1.83 m diam. X 6.71 m Long, 280 kW.• Flotation circuit comprising rougher bank, scavenger bank and cleaner bank. Rougher Scavenger bank is constituted of 6 x 6m3 flotation cells and 3 x 30 m3 flotation cells and the cleaner is constituted of 3 x 6 m3 flotation cells.• Concentrate Thickening with 6 m diam. Thickener.• Concentrate CIL (carbon in leaching): CIL circuit is comprised of 7 tanks with 2 leach tanks and 5 Carbon in leach."

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on the importance of maximizing gold recovery. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes."

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. (Peñoles) in Mexico, is a major silver producer. The Peñoles Mining Division has eight Mining Operations and in seven of them, flotation is used to concentrate the metal and mineral values. "Porphyry copper deposits are the most important source of copper and also gold within the orogenic belts. These deposits are characterized by low grade copper ore (0.2% to 1% copper) and host precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. A characterization tool has been developed for complex porphyry type copper-gold deposits with an aim to quantify copper and precious metal deportment. This quantification is a challenging task due to low grades and also due to the presence of both visible and invisible precious metal content in different sulphide and non-sulphide phases. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams such as flotation and leach products. This paper presents the development of a systematic approach to diagnostic metallurgy using state-of-the-art optical and automated mineralogy, micro-probe, dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS analysis for quantification of invisible and visible precious metals content in various species. The relevance of this characterization to metallurgy will also be briefly discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONA novel characterization tool has been developed for double refractory gold ores and complex copper-gold ores using state-of-the-art technology for quantitative gold and copper deportment study. The characterization of these ores is a challenging task due to low copper and gold grades in ores, presence of both primary and secondary copper sulphide phases and variable proportion of visible and invisible gold in different sulphides phases (pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) and iron oxide phases (magnetite, hematite and goethite). A study was initiated on various ore deposits and also on samples representing various processing streams of pilot plant batches such as flotation concentrates and tailings. This paper attempts to discuss the deportment characterization methodology through presenting results from investigations on four samples from a flotation circuit viz, Feed, Final concentrate, Cleaner Scavenger Tail and Rougher Tail samples. These four samples represent the key streams for a typical copper-gold flotation flow sheet. The key objective of this investigation was to identify and quantify visible and invisible gold along with understanding the morphology and liberation of gold associated with various sulphides, Fe- Oxides and non-sulphide gangue species. In addition, the aim of this study was also to relate this mineralogical and gold deportment information to metallurgical performance."

"7.1. Glossary of the Platinum-Group Minerals7.1.1. IntroductionA glossary of the platinum-group minerals (POM) serves as a useful introduction to a chapter on their mineralogy. Earlier glossaries (Cabri, 1972, 1976) were prepared for different purposes and composed in a different manner. As for most mineralogical textbooks, from Dana's System of Mineralogy, 3rd Edition (1850) , to Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species (1980), this glossary is primarily a chemical classification, arranged here in two tables. Table 7.1 groups the mineralforming compounds of the six platinum-group elements (POE) according to their essential anion(s) or according to the nonPOE element in intermetallic compounds. Table 7.2 is a similar listing for the native metals and alloys of the POE. Both tables include unidentified POM considered to be bona fide new minerals requiring additional study for complete characterization and recognition (see Chapter 9*). Some information on the chemistry of the POM is given in the sections on X-ray data (7 .2) and ore microscopy (7 .3). Because the overwhelming majority of POM have been characterized by the electron microprobe, a more detailed account of representative analyses is given in Chapter 8**. The total POM listed in Tables 7.1 and 7.2 is about 100, after deleting some which would not qualify as discrete species if found today, but which are still recognized on historical grounds; e.g. iridosmine, osmiridium, platiniridium. Tables 7.1 and 7.2 also include 28 unnamed POM; included because they are considered to be probably new species (Cabri 1981 b). The referral scheme for unnamed minerals is the same as in Chapter 9. There are considerably more palladium minerals known than other POM; the proportion of total species (listed in Tables 7.1 and 7 .2) for the POE is: Pd 48%, Pt 21 o/o , Ru and Ir 9% each, Rh 8% and Os 5%. These proportions are in marked contrast to the estimated cosmic abundance, as compiled for average type C1 chondrite by Naldrett and Duke (1980): Pt 29%, Ru 20%, Pd, Ir and Os 15% each, and Rh 6%."

"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

"For mining operations globally, the scale and criticality of the grinding mill drive has meant that selection of the correct mill drive technology is paramount. With so much depending on the successful implementation of the electrical drive system— safety operation, timely installation, availability, energy efficiency, minimum maintenance and extend its use as tool to assist during mill liner exchange—customers are justified in their scrutiny and slow adoption of new drive technology. From the first installation of low, fixed speed synchronous motors to the introduction of the current source and further voltage source variable frequency drive, innovations require long periods of time and mining customers willing to push the industry forward. In recent years, the variable frequency drive has been the stepping stone for a new generation of mill drive technology. In use for decades in other heavy industrial applications, the drives allow for system optimization in a myriad of ways. The most dramatic of changes is in the design of the motor. Where in the past motor design was bound by line frequency, today the designer can optimize machine size and, more importantly, eliminate the need entirely for the synchronous motor. Induction motor design has now progressed to the point where low speed operation is possible at efficiency levels nearing those of the synchronous design. Moreover, the simplicity of the squirrel cage design means that availability, reliability and spare part requirements are greatly improved. As the next step in the evolution of large pinion driven grinding mills, the low speed induction drive offers a new reliable and robust system to the market.IntroductionAs deposit grades continue to decline, new ways of processing ever greater concentrator throughputs have been required to maintain throughput efficient and profitable operations. Furthermore, the high risk nature of mining developments requires a constant search for safer, higher availability and more efficient equipment design. Limitation of downtime is a key factor in ensuring mining operations can be sustained through volatile market conditions. Often processing the entire mine throughput through just 1 or 2 lines, the crushing and grinding circuits are of particular criticality to the uptime and, thus, profitability of any mining operation."

"Noranda's Goldstream mine is a 1,500 ton per day copper-zinc mine located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C.The orebody which contains 3.69% Cu and 2.69% Zn was discovered in 1972. Construction of the mine and mill was completed in 1982 and start up was achieved in May 1983.This paper will describe the flowsheet and related equipment 1n the crusher and mill, in particular the dewatering section where two Larox pressure filters are used to dry the concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe Goldstrean property is located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. in the Goldstream River Valley (Figure #1). It was discovered during the construction of a logging road in 1972. Exploratory drilling was initiated in 1975, and in 1976 a portal was collared to obtain underground data. Samples were taken from the underground workings for metallurgical bench tests and a pilot plant run.Due to economic conditions, the decision to go into production was delayed until 1980. Concentrator construction and underground development progressed simultaneously during 1981 and 1982, and were completed by the end of 1982. Start up of the concentrator was achieved on May 2, 1983.The ore typically contains about 40% sulphides, which are chalcopyrite 10%, sphaletite 6%, pyrrhotite 20%, and pyrite less than 5%. The sulphide minerals have a high degree of intergrowth. Most of the sphalerite occurs in micron sized grains which are embedded in the pyrrhotite and, to a lesser degree in the chalcopyrite. There is also some fine dissemination of the chalcopyrite in the pyrrhotite. The waste rock is made up of about 30% quartz, 20% guange silicates, and 10% carbonates. The ore has a specific gravity of 3.2 and a natural pH of 8.2."
