Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

The placer mining industry of the West Coast region of the South Island is based largely around the production of alluvial gold, although other valuable minerals are also present. Since the first major discoveries in 1864-65, reported gold production has totalled around 264 t (8.5 Moz). During the past 10 years, annual production has totalled around 1460 kg (47,000 oz). It is anticipated that gold production over the next three years will continue at a level of 1400-1800 kg.   Annual gold production peaked during 1866 at approximately 17,170 kg (550,000 oz) and has not exceeded 100,000 oz since 1885. This reflects the ease with which gold was won from shallow, rich deposits that were present at many localities. Subsequently, there has been a general decline in the availability of this type of deposit, a trend that will continue in the future. This paper outlines the present state of placer mining in the West Coast region, gives some historical background to the industry and briefly predicts future trends.

This paper describes the preliminary design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnels along State Route 24 in Oakland, California. The paper focus is on two major aspects of the project: initial support system design and seismic design. The initial support system was designed based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).NATM provides the required flexibility to accommodate the variable ground conditions in the weak, folded, and faulted rock along the alignment. The seismic design provides a final lining system that meets serviceability requirements for a 1,500 year seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

University research in the U.S. consists of three components; faculty, funding, and graduate students or postdoctorals. Individual faculty is the unit area of research that is not limited, although faculty normally performs research in their areas of expertise. Faculty can and often do join with other faculty in multidisciplinary research. Faculty research achievements or reputation reflects the standing of the program and university. Therefore, research is highly encouraged and regarded within the university community. Graduate students are the work force of faculty research and doctoral students are preferred for high-quality products. The federal government provides the majority of funding sources, with the remainder coming from industry, state government and others. Compared with other engineering majors, the mining engineering programs in the U.S. are unique in that they: ? Are small in terms of the number of programs, and number of faculty and students in each program. ? Serve a single industry (i.e., mining) and are thus cyclic, reflecting the up and down economic state of the mineral industries. Enrollment statistics during the past 70 years show that a cycle consists of approximately 30 years with the first 10 years up, followed by 20 years down. ? Have curriculum designed to emphasize and thus serve for either the coal, hardrock or industrial minerals industries. These unique features make mining engineering programs hard to manage in university environments. Funding for mining research has relied primarily on the federal government, i.e., the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and currently the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The mining industry does not directly perform, nor sponsor research projects. Federal funding provides primarily in-house research. In the last four decades, federal extramural funding was only available when Congress appropriated extra funding in response to mine disasters. For instance, a string of coal mine explosions in the mid to late 1960s prompted Congress to enact the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It provided massive research funding from 1970 to 1983 covering all mining-related subject areas. From 1984 to 1995, federal extramural research funding was minimal, through two generic mineral technology research centers for selected mining engineering programs. In 1995, Congress closed the USBM and transferred the health and safety of miners program to NIOSH. Federally-funded extra-mural research practically stopped from 1995 to 2006. In 2006 and 2007, in response to a series of disasters, including those at Sago, Aracoma, Darby and Crandall Canyon, Congress again appropriated funding for short-term re-search in selected subjected areas such as underground tracking and communication, mine seal and ventilation, and deep cover pillar extraction. Therefore, to develop a meaningful academic mining research program during the past three decades, funding needed to be drawn from other sources such as the mining industries. A ?meaningful? program requires a sufficient amount of consistent funding in order to produce effective results. A review of federally funded extramural research pro-grams shows that a great majority of contractors/grantees are private entities, involving few mining engineering faculty. This, in part, is due to the fact that mining engineering involves so many different subjects. Therefore, a small mining engineering program can only have resources to cover teaching in the core subject areas (i.e., extraction, ground control, ventilation and material handling), at best. In this respect, a successful and meaningful academic mining re-search effort requires strong supporting programs such as geology/geophysics, structural (applied) mechanics, material sciences, compute/software application, etc. Therefore, academic mining research had to rely on private sources such as coal companies, in the author?s case, for sustained funding in the past three decades. Relying on funding from coal companies presents several problems. The projects were small and considered routine consulting projects requiring practical answers in a very short time frame. This is not really suitable for academic research, for which the major goal of research is the training of graduate students. These short-term projects vary with time and mines, most of which are driven by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) or U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM) regulations. So sustained funding under such condition requires broad experience of coal mining operations, which is also not well-aligned for academic research where faculty tends to specialize in a narrow field. Consequently, under such a funding environment, it is important to keep in mind how to develop long-term academic research objectives from conducting small short-term consulting projects that require quick solutions. In other words, how to look beyond the quick answers and to develop broader and more fundamental theories applicable to other situations that advance the-state-of-the-art. In order to achieve this objective, faculty must act as the connecting link because graduate students come and go. Faculty must know the detail of each project such that they know what are the important unsolved problems, what to assign to specific graduate students and how to guide the next group of graduate students to continue the development and advance the mining science. Under such funding environments, the most effective way to conduct academic mining research and ensure quality products is to maintain a research group consisting of postdoctoral, PhD, and MS students of various rankings such that the senior ranks can assist in guiding the junior ranks, especially the senior PhD students who are experts in their dissertation research areas. A weekly meeting should be scheduled for the group in which problems encountered in the research are discussed or individuals take turns presenting the progress of their projects. During each meeting, the importance of open discussion on scientific issues must be emphasized. Thus, opinions are encouraged, debated, and rejected or accepted. Students are encouraged to listen to and analyze other points of view. In addition to training of this thought process, the meeting also helps identify the strengths and weakness of each individual. As the subject of research expands over time, the group?s and, thus, the faculty?s research experience broadens. With this approach, companies can get the quick answer they desire from expert research experience and the faculty can engage in meaningful applied and basic research that is most relevant to routine mine operations. The end result is that companies will have a high regard for academic mining research.

The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. "PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH), together with employees from The Doe Run Company, are monitoring and evaluating the stability of a pillar retreat section at the Fletcher Mine, a lead/zinc, room-and-pillar mine near Bunker, MO. Cemented rockfill is being used to provide roof support as high-grade, remnant ore pillars are mined. Earth pressure cells and deformation meters placed in backfill panel pillars monitor stress change and vertical deformation, respectively, as nearby ore-bearing pillars are extracted. Similarly, biaxial stressmeters and borehole extensometers are used to monitor mining-induced stress change and deformation, respectively, in long-term support pillars. Data from these instruments indicate that when ore-bearing pillars were mined, stress was redistributed from support pillars to a backfill panel pillar. The data also indicate that the backfill and support pillars have remained stable for two years after pillar extraction was completed in the area. This research demonstrates the importance of using reliable instruments to document the geomechanical behavior of pillars and backfill. Gaining a better understanding of roof support and stress redistribution mechanisms is a fundamental part of NIOSH's goal to reduce and/or predict rockfalls, which are still among the leading causes of injuries in metal/nonmetal underground mines.

The Mine granite at the Ardlethan tinfield is dated by Rb-Sr on a muscovite concentrate at not less than 417 ± 2.5 Ma (2s), consistent with the intrusion of this granitic body into folded Late Ordovician sediments. A combination of Rb-Sr and K-Ar evidence suggests a slightly younger age, 41O ± 2.5 Ma, both for the neighbouring Ardlethan Granite and for the hydrothermal alteration of the Mine granite, with which the tin is associated.On this basis, the somewhat high 206Pb/204Pb of two galena samples from within the hydrothermal alteration zone is best explained by an increase in U/Pb of order 10 per cent during a geochemical event in the Late Precambrian, in the rocks which eventually yielded the Pb to the mineralising fluid. This earlier event probably increased Th/U in these rocks as well, by as much as 5 per cent. If these reconstructions are valid, the lower-than-average U/Pb implied for the original Precambrian source rock bespeaks a mantle component of marginally greater proportion than for "average orogene".

The roles of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in smog formation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Samples of automobile exhaust with varying HC and NOx levels were irradiated in a smog chamber under conditions that resulted in smog levels similar to those observed in the atmosphere. Results were used to define the patterns that describe the dependence of a number of smog manifestations on HC and on NOx. Using these dependence data and some simplifying assumptions, estimates were made of the ranges within which HC and NOx must lie in order to obtain specified levels of air quality.

This paper discusses the principles and application of risk assessment and management as the basis for environmental management within the mining industry. Unlike in other industries, mines are required to obtain closure certificates in terms of section12 of the Minerals Act, which should ultimately release them from further environmental responsibilities. It is emphasized that the concept of environmental risk assessment and management, when applied correctly will mean that the mine will be identifying and managing environmental issues beyond those set by current legal requirements and management strategies. The focus shifts from conventional minimum legal compliance management to management of real environmental risks. The advantage of this approach is that the perceived ?shifting of legal and management goal posts? due to changing environmental laws or management principles, will not influence or dictate the mine?s short or long-term management objectives or actions, mine closure funds can be more accurately determined and mine closure should become a relatively simple procedure. The risk assessment approach has been applied to the planning of mine closure at Iscor?s Durban Navigation Collieries (Durnacol) in Kwa-Zulu Natal and certain key risk issues such as the long-term risk of water pollution from coal discard dumps have already progressed to fully quantitative risk assessment. This paper will discuss the process, which has been followed to date, with particular emphasis on the most recent phase, namely quantitative risk assessment and management of pollution from coal discard dumps. It is believed that the approach that is being pioneered at Durnacol and which overcomes some of the more obvious deficiencies of both the EMPR and the traditional IEM process will ultimately serve as the model for all responsible mines in South Africa. It is also believed that this approach will enable the authorities to issue closure certificates with the confidence that there will be no unforeseen surprises in the years after closure.

Of the optimization techniques proposed in determining the optimum open pit limits, dynamic programming and graph theory have proved most successful. However, publications on these two methods lack a certain amount of rigour and clarity in exposition. Certain ideas in the methods have been clarified and additional features introduced in order to make them more sensitive to practical applications. A case study in the form of an application of these ideas on data from a producing mine is presented and discussed.

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. Virtually all fluorine consumed by the aluminum industry is as the electrolyte of the Hall-Heroult process for producing primary aluminum. A small amount of fluorspar is used but most fluorine is consumed as either aluminum fluoride or cryolite. Some fluorine- containing materials are used in secondary aluminum production, but the amount is negligible compared with primary production requirements. Any analysis of the future of the primary aluminum industry must take into account two powerful and closely related driving forces which are shaping that future. These factors are increasingly stringent restrictions on the emission of pollutants and the continuing cost-price squeeze. Nowhere do these factors combine more forcefully than in the area of fluorine consumption. We can safely assume that industry efforts to reduce fluorine consumption will be intensified and that these efforts will be fruitful. This paper will attempt to identify and quantify the factors and trends of fluorine consumption during the next decade. We will be concerned primarily with the demand for new fluorine. Sources of new fluorine will not be treated.

New Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations limit the mass concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM) or, more specifically, the concentration of elemental carbon (EC), in underground mines. The mine operators are responding by introducing a variety of controls to reduce DPM in the mines, potentially including the evaluation of new maintenance procedures to reduce underground mine vehicle emissions. There is currently a lack of an inexpensive and dependable method to directly measure the DPM concentration emitted from the vehicle tailpipe. To that end, this work demonstrated a simple field portable method for estimating the mass concentration of elemental carbon exiting the tailpipe of a diesel engine using a direct reading photometer. Simultaneous measurements of tailpipe exhaust were made with a Thermo Electron Personal DataRAM 1200 photometer (particulate mass concentration based on light scattering) and by analyzing PM2.5 and PM1.0 samples collected on quartz fiber filters using the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method 5040 (mass concentration of EC via thermal-optical method). Results indicate surprisingly good correlation (R2 ) 0.97) of the two methods when the data are adjusted for relative humidity (RH) and corrected using an empirically generated calibration factor. Although preliminary, it may be possible to implement this method in maintenance shops to monitor emission trends and to compare emissions of various vehicles in a fleet. Such data will be useful for fleet planning to meet new air quality standards.

Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

The objective of this handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. There are several portions of the handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.
