A critical demand exists to develop new mineral resources, and the need for exploration techniques to supplement costly test drilling is becoming; more acute. In the past few years more industries have begun experimenting with geophysical methods to locate and define mineral deposits and delineate reserves. The new techniques have proven profitable in many instances. As a part of a broad long range program to study the mineral resources of Alabama, and in response to requests from land owners and mining companies, the Geological Survey of Alabama is investi¬gating the occurrence of bauxite and kaolin deposits in the Eufeula area. This project is supported by special funds appropriated for this purpose by the Alabama Legislature.

Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

As the U.S. coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. New mining health and safety training modalities are becoming increasingly prevalent in the underground mining industry. Various digital training tools have been developed over the past several years, but the extent of their use remains unclear. Advances in gamified training by way of computerbased video games and virtual reality (VR) have opened a new avenue for mine rescue and self-escape training, but these methods have not been widely adopted across the mining industry. Mine rescue and self-escape situations require a mix of in-classroom training as well as live drills, but it is important to assess the extent of and effectiveness of new training modalities. The Mine Rescue and Self-Escape Survey (MRSES) was distributed to underground mining operations to collect perceptions of current training effectiveness as well as willingness to adopt new training methods as a complement to live rescue drills. Responses from the MRSES indicate that adoption of digital training technologies has been slow-going despite an interest in their use. Further, there appears to be no meaningful connection between more frequent escape and rescue training and feelings of emergency preparedness. With relatively little use of already developed digital training tools but an interest in their adoption, it may be time to reassess current emergency preparedness training philosophies.

Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

Fine particles present major technical and economic problems to those who deal with solid/liquid separation processes. In the coal industry the problem is compounded by the large amounts of produced fines such as those present in Western Canadian coals. Flocculants in the form of high molecular weight water soluble polymers are commonly considered an effective solution for the enhancement of the separation process. These reagents are relatively expensive especially when considering a low-price commodity such as coal. Optimization of the use of these reagents is therefore an operational necessity. Six polymers were evaluated as to their effectiveness in flocculating a fine coal tailing. Results were compared with those for a reference flocculant, in-use at that time in the washery. It was shown that, in general, flocculants significantly improve the solid/liquid separation process. The ranking of the flocculants as to their effectiveness in settling and filtration indicated that the best flocculants for settling were not necessarily the most effective for filtration. Flocculants that showed the best filtration improvement were generally cationic and those best for settling were anionic.

Thiohydrometallurgical systems including thiosulfate, thiocyanate and thiourea have been stud- ied as alternative liriviants for the leaching of gold. Research and development of thiohydrometallurgical technology has been prompted by environmental concerns with the use of cyanide and problems associated with the processing of difficult-to-treat ores. These thiosystems have some chemical similarities, enabling gold to be leached in a practical oxidizing environment. However, the solution chemistry of the thiosystems is complicated due to instability of the thioreagents and many other reactions which occur during the gold leaching reaction. In this paper, interference reactions of selected metal ions and sulfide minerals are examined in order to understand important aspects of solution chemistry which control the stability of the thioleaching reactions. Applications using thioreagents as lixiviants for oxide and refractory gold ores are presented.

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 "Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys" adequately defines pulley assembly standards for light material handling applications. However, most mining applications demand pulleys of higher reliability and load capacity than that offered by CEMA standard pulleys. Various sources have published specifications for "Engineered" conveyor pulleys. Typically, these specifications require T-section type pulleys applicable to operating belt tensions exceeding 439 N/mm (2,500 lb./in.). This paper examines the application of CEMA standard pulleys, T-section pulleys and also a mining duty pulley design. The mining duty pulley fills the void between CEMA standard pulleys and T-section pulleys and can eliminate the high cost and long lead times associated with T-section type pulleys.

Experimental designs are data acquisition plans which, if followed exactly, will quickly provide process engineers with information to assess statistically the individual and joint influence of factors on responses to permit of rapid decision making. Methodology employed to construct data acquisition plans is described in some detail. In production environments, factorial designs are appropriate for most purposes. Use of two level factorials to make decisions is described for a grinding circuit.

Using computer applications to solve mining problems began in the early 1960s, utilizing the large (for that day) centralized computing facilities at a few universities and major mining company headquarters. Many years passed before technology was adequate to allow any of those applications to be run at the mine sites to provide immediately available solutions. One of the first mining applications attempted was for ore reserve analysis and long- to medium-range mine planning. As these are among the most frequent and familiar minicomputer applications at the mine site, it is interesting to follow the evolution of computing and communications hardware which has finally allowed effective transfer of this technology.

This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

After a good year in 1979-strong mineral demand, adequate prices for most metals, minimal labor problems-1980 was not so good. The US produced $24.8 billion worth of nonfuel minerals last year, up 3.5% from 1979, according to preliminary US Bureau of Mines figures. But the $800 million increase was the smallest annual gain since 1977 and reflected reduced auto and construction industry demand, strikes, and energy shortages. Preliminary figures for 68 minerals show that production of 42 decreased, 25 increased, and one was unchanged. Production of 11 of 21 US-produced minerals was up. Noteworthy mineral events in 1980 included a copper industry strike, increased gold and silver prices, troubles in the iron ore and uranium industries, discussion about a US nonfuels mineral policy, and corporate interest in mining companies as merger targets. Recessionary conditions experienced by the Western world in 1980 resulted in a slowdown in new mine development, evident in the relative scarcity of major new base metal projects. This could lead to short term supply/demand anomalies within the next few years which, in turn, could have a significant effect on metal prices, according to Mining Magazine (Jan. 1981). World Mining (Sept. 1980) noted that US mining strength is in open pit operations. A much lower tonnage is mined underground and is centralized in trona, uranium, lead, zinc, molybdenum, potash and, to a lesser extent, copper. The most notable increase in new underground mines has been in Wyoming's trona district where new mines are being developed and production will increase, the magazine said.

Minproc Engineers has carried out the design construction and commissioning of thirty two process plants in the period 1978-87. Twenty eight are gold silver recovery plants, and of these twenty two were gold alone and six were gold and silver. In most plants carbon was used for gold adsorption. Desorption has been carried out using the USBM Homestake method, the Anglo American Research Laboratories method, and the Micron Methanol method. Electrowinning has utilised steel wool, stainless steel wool, and aluminium cathodes. Electrorefining using polished stainless steel cathodes is practised. This paper summarises the experience gained in these operations

The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."
