INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce done' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering. feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of verti¬cal autoclave units operating at 170°C (338F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

On September 13, 1973 MAPCO Inc. leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation an 18,000 acre tract of coal lands in Eastern Kentucky's Martin County (See Figure 1.). In July, 1974 initial run of mine coal shipments commenced and in April, 1976 shipments of a 12,500 BTU, less than 1% sulphur, washed coal was being shipped. Results of exploration demonstrated that large quantities of overburden would have to be moved. MAPCO decided to invest in large surface mining equipment to tackle the job.

Efficient methods for removal of copper from heap leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The INEEL has developed a set of materials based upon current solvent extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, our strategy anchors the chelators to a non-polymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established and attachment to the solid surfaces achieved in an efficient manner. Our continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper capturing capabilities.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

BHP Robinson contracted Minnovex Technologies to implement a Comdale Expert System at their greenfields operation in Ely, Nevada. The expert system has resulted in a significant increase in tonnage. Other benefits have also been realised, including a reduction in operation upsets (having a positive effect on downstream processes, i.e. flotation) and reduced production variances between crews. The expert system is written in a unique manner using trend based logic with minimal hard limits. The result is a robust system that requires minimal operator supervision while producing very high results. The development, success and acceptance of the system can be attributed to the strong team that was assembled for this project. The team not only consisted of BHP Metallurgists and Minnovex but most importantly included operations.

The Westside Light Rail Project, a major 19.3-km (12-mile) extension of Portland, Oregon's light rail system, includes 4.6 km (2.8 miles) of twin 5.8-m (19-ft) diameter running tunnels, a binocular type station which, at 80 m (260 ft) below the ground surface, will be the deepest mass transit station in North America, two 9.4-m (31-ft) diameter station access shafts, and a 5.2-m (17¬ft) diameter ventilation shaft. The tunnels are being excavated by TBM and conventional rock, soft ground, and mixed-face methods. Geologic conditions, alignment, underground opening design, excavation method selection, and payment provisions for excavation and initial ground support are discussed.

An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

The first stage of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension Northwest, is a two-track rapid transit extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge, through three stations, to the Alewife Station/Garage complex in North Cambridge. The extension, about 5.0 km. (3.1 miles) in length, is entirely in tunnel, with the Alewife Station/Garage complex and adjacent line sections of tunnel constructed by cut-and-cover methods. The Station/Garage complex, just west of Alewife Brook Parkway, is in an area underlain by deep deposits of very soft highly sensitive clays. It is proposed to construct the station and adjacent tunnel sections by the slurry trench method, using the slurry wall as the permanent structural wall of the station and tunnel. The unusual nature of the underlying clay and its very high sensitivity raised questions concerning the feasibility of the proposed construction. Since research failed to reveal any construction precedent for the specific conditions encountered, a test section was undertaken to determine construction problems, resolve uncertainties, and to establish acceptable parameters for the construction of the slurry walls. PROJECT ORGANIZATION Sverdrup & Parcel as tunnel and transit systems consultant for the Red Line Extension-Davis Square to Alewife had overall responsibility for determining program objectives, project management and test implementation.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem-a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile-was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

Results of in situ investigations are discussed providing comparisons of rock mass deformability measurements by three methods: 'petite sismique' technique, the Goodman borehole jack and flat jacks. The tests were performed in exploratory tunnels constructed for site characterization purposes of an underground hydro-electric scheme. Due to the large number of data (41 petite sismique measurements, 45 Goodman jack tests and 19 flat jack measurements), it was possible to evaluate thoroughly the testing techniques employed. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the problems encountered in the interpretation of the results and to offer suggestions for selecting in situ tests. INTRODUCTION In situ tests are expensive and time consuming but they are an important aid in tunneling applications since they can provide deformability data of rock masses in contrast to rock material characteristics obtainable from small laboratory specimens. Some in situ tests are relatively easy to perform but their reliability may be in question unless a comparison of the data obtained by several different test methods is possible. Although many in situ techniques are available for determination of rock mass deformability (1), those more convenient to use are the Goodman jack, flat jacks and 'petite sismique. These methods are considered convenient because the Goodman jack is a borehole device; flat jacks can provide not only deformability data but also information about the stress field around excavations; while 'petite sismique' is based on seismic refraction surveys. Accordingly, these three methods have been selected for comparison.

The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems during microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper, electromagnetic and thermal models of coal are presented that can predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave drying.

Murer Company, Andermatt, Switzerland, can claim to have done pioneer work in the construction of inclined shafts. This happened in 1968/69, when we decided to bore with a Wirth tunnel borer an inclined shaft, 1100 m in length, 3.0 m in diameter, and with a grade of 65%, in the 2400 kilo pascall per sq. cm granite of the Montblanc Massive. The whole excavation was accomplished in ten months which, at least for European conditions, can be claimed as a record. It was, at least to our knowledge, the first inclined shaft to be bored full-face (Fig. 1). Encouraged by the experiences and performances attained at Châtelard, we approached other projects of the same kind. We were awarded, together with Hochtief Ltd., Essen, a contract from Schluchseewerke, Freiburg, Germany, in December 1969, for the construction of a penstock for the Hornbergstufe at Wehr, Germany, with a diameter of 6.3 m. This inclined shaft with a grade of 55% is located in Schwarzwalder granite with a compressive strength of up to 2000 kilo pascall per sq. cm, about 31,000 psi. As no exact geological data were available about the rock to be worked, and a fault zone from 80 to 150 m long had to be faced, as well as a few individual fissures of varying thickness, it was decided to use the multi-stage method. The 3-m diam tunnelling machine which had driven the oblique shaft at Châtelard had now finished work, and an immediate beginning was made with driving the pilot staft. This was very welcome to the contractor, since exact information about the type of rock present and the inflows of water was required immediately and before the final borehole diameter was fixed, for the purpose of dimensioning the supports to be subsequently installed.
