The fossil resins of certain western coals are of significance and of sufficient value as a chemical commodity to justify a fossil resin industry. At the present time these valuable fossil resin resources, worth more than $0.50/lb as a chemical commodity, are being burned as fuel for electric power generation. This waste of our fossil resin resources corresponds to a loss in revenue of $200 million per year -equivalent to the value of the coal itself! Improved process technology for the recovery of fossil resin is under development and includes selective flotation of fossil resin from fine coal streams and solvent refining of the fossil resin flotation concentrate to produce a premium resin product. The most recent developments in process technologies are discussed with respect to separation efficiency and product quality. It is clear that the development of a fossil resin industry should not be limited by process technology.

A well-defined geometric model for a mineral system and its liberation by size reduction is used to show the relationship between true volumetric particle composition and the composition estimates obtained by the measurement of linear intercepts or areas of simulated polished sections of particles. Based on this information, a transformation is developed between the areal measurements and the volumetric composition for this idealized mineral system. Tin has been one of the very few commodities which has been covered by an international commodity agreement. It is the only metal so covered. The reason behind tin's prediliction for an agreement has been the inconsistency of the price pattern for tin during the entire 20th century. It is not surprising in view - of the wide and wild fluctuations in its price that tin has been called the Cinderella metal. An examination, for example, of prices in 1977 alone attests to the erratic behavior of the tin markets. The high was recorded on October 27 at M$1,895 per picul and the low on January 3 at M$l,314 3/8, on the Penang market, a spread in Malaysian dollars of $581 for a picul weighing 133 1/3 pounds. The first steps in international cooperation on tin were taken after the price bonanza of the First World War. Despite a lack of increased consumption, and in spite of the fact there was no shortage of mining production during the war, prices boomed. Shipping shortages and thinning stocks brought about a situation where in the U.S., industrial stocks were only 1/6 of what they had been in 1914. The boom busted early. In 1921 the tinplate industry of the world had cut its output in half and total world consumption of tin fell by 1/3. Tin producers became so concerned that they created what was called the Bandoeng Pool. It accumulated stocks held by countries now known as Indonesia and Malaysia, amounting to 28 percent of the combined production of the two countries and about 15 percent of the total world for 1921. The pool holdings were shortly exhausted and thereafter in the years 1924 to 1928, general boom conditions existed for tin.

A mathematical model was developed for the grinding and flotation section of Union Carbide's Bishop mill and this model was used to indicate how variations in grind, retention time, and calcite and fluorite content effects the mill capacity, tungsten units produced, and the grade and recovery of the scheelite concentrate. A model such as this is a starting point in determining the economic optimum running condition for a mining and milling operation and an example of this is given.

INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner's drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

This paper describes the successful mechanized extraction of coal pillars in 11 panels using the fish-tail method from 2010 to 2017 at Pinoura Mine in India. This method proved its potential of coal recovery with efficient strata control under weak roof due to faster rate of extraction in a single lift. Observations of strata and snook behavior during the field studies in different panels of the mine are included.

The program of study of pellet binder materials was begun by the ORF in 1963 to examine various Canadian materials as substitutes for bentonite which is imported in large tonnages (199,270 tons in 1969) from the U.S.A. for Canadian pellet plant operations. Most of the raw bentonite used in Canada originates in Wyoming, North Dakota and more recently Greece, resulting in relatively high transportation costs to pellet producers. Some Canadian bentonites available in Western Canada (Alberta) can be beneficiated for uses as pellet binders but could not compete in cost with U.S. sources due to the cost of beneficiation and the higher rail transport charges to Eastern Canada. It is difficult to find a substitute for bentonite, and many materials have been investigated by research groups but, so far, no economic substitute is in use. However, some success is apparent in studies of low cost materials such as clays, sea weed, peat moss and low grade coal, The work done by the ORF over several years has covered systematic test¬ing of Ontario clays, lignite, some types of tree bark, waste sulphite liquors of various kinds, and peat moss as binders for iron ore pellets. The major effort has been concentrated on peat moss and has included a study of the influence of different additives. Since analysis of peat moss for humic acid is difficult and time consuming, a certain amount of time was devoted to development of improved methods, the most useful of which was a spectrophotometric method based on extraction of peat by sodium pyrophosphate for determination of humic substances. In the present paper, only the most recent work concerning the use of peat moss with suitable additives is discussed in detail, since it is the most conclusive and best documented portion of the program.

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension is being constructed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnel has shallow ground cover and mixed-face conditions and passes underneath the SkyTrain and MARTA stations and airport terminal buildings. It includes a twin tube Bifurcation with a span of over 45 feet and ground cover of 12 feet. A flat roof is being constructed at the Bifurcation to maximize rock cover and minimize surface settlements. This paper focuses on design and construction challenges for the Bifurcation and tunneling beneath the world’s busiest airport, while minimizing impacts to operations.

State and federal regulations require that surface mine overburden be investigated in advance of mining for naturally occurring earth materials that are detrimental to animal and plant life or to uses of water. Proper identification of these toxic materials is necessary to permit development of environmentally sound reclamation programs. Intensified use of present laboratory methods to meet anticipated testing demands would be both costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the desirability of and general requirements for a geophysical system capable of locating toxic zones in the overburden of surface mineable lands of the Northern Great Plains Coal Province. The paper (1) identifies the types and character of naturally occurring overburden substances that must be investigated in advance of mining, (2) discusses the economic justification for development of a geophysical system to replace or to complement conventional laboratory test methods, and (3) discusses the potential applicability of downhole geophysical methods to overburden analysis.

In recent years there has been an Increasing Interest In the application of automatic control theory to mineral processing systems, and numerous applications of mineral process control have appeared in the literature. A general approach to the synthesis of mineral process control systems is presented. The first phase of the control system design consists of specifying the control objectives, process variables and their interactions; these topics will be discussed with specific reference to mineral processing. The second phase Is con¬cerned with selection of control strategies algorithms, instrumenta¬tion, and other components of the control system and is discussed at length. These concepts are then illustrated by a flotation control case study.

During the past year the news media has come in for its share of criticism. Some of it, without doubt, is justified. Much of it, like that which has been leveled against some of the rest of us, is not. We can sympathize with the newspapers and magazines, the radio and television stations. Like the coal industry, which I represent, they are a part of the free enterprise system. They depend upon advertising for their existence, and advertisers patronize those media which reach the most people interested in their product. The various news media are therefore In avid competition for circulation. Although they do have an unquestioned influence on the public, they are primarily a reflection of the public and it is in this context that we will consider them. Granted that this reflection is sometimes a bit distorted, let us admit that any subject which does not strike a responsive chord In the public will soon be dropped by the media.

Fine screening, as discussed in this paper, pertains to the use of the Rapifine DSM Screen to make a 65 to 325-mesh separation at production tonnages. The greatest number of Rapifine Screen installations are in magnetic taconite plants where the unusual relationship between the grinding mill, cyclone classifier, magnetic separators, and fine screens makes the Rapifine Screen application unique. Since the initial fine screening installation on magnetite in 1961, (1) additional installations and further testwork have contributed to the fund of information which is the basis of this paper. The addition of fine screens to the grinding-classifying circuit of a magnetic taconite plant creates a change that effects all components of the circuit. Pine screens in a non-magnetic plant have also been investigated, but here the benefits have not' been as clearly defined. Screens classify according to the particle size. Hydrocyclones classify by a combination of particle size and particle weight. The change in the type of classification minimizes overgrinding of the mineral. The resultant savings in grinding power can be used to increase the throughput, upgrade the product, or increase recovery.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

United States Steel Corporation began mining coal in southern West Virginia at the turn of the century, and until the late 40's production was confined to underground mines. Surface mining was initiated in our southern West Virginia -holdings as a means of recovering coal that could not be obtained by underground mining methods. After observing and evaluating surface mining methods employed by other companies, some of which operated on lands of U. S. Steel on a lease basis, we undertook the establishment of a surface mining operation. Our method, as, initiated in the early 50's, remains basically the same today. Variations have come about primarily by equipment modifications. The method consists' of a pioneer cut to establish the coal outcrop, a drill bench for drilling, blasting, and removal of the overburden from the top of the coal. The land is rugged except for the flood plains of some of the larger streams. The mountains have steep slopes, averaging 30 degrees, with relatively sharp ridges and very narrow valleys,. Geologically, the coals_ lie in the Pocahontas formation of the Pottsville group in the Pennsylvanian system. This means that the coals in our area of operation lie at the base of. The coal measures in the Appalachian range. The coal that we have mined is primarily the Pocahontas nos. 3 and 4 seams. We have mined negligible amounts of other seams in the Pocahontas groups above the no. 4 seam. The Pocahontas no. 3 seam, which is the lowest mineable seam geologically in this area, lies anywhere from 700 feet below: the valley floor up to 400 feet above the floor. This is occasioned by the Anticlinal formation which gives us grades Of about 9% at the anticline, decreasing to about 1 to 1-1/2% on the extreme flanks. We have the opportunity to engage in surface mining where the coal seams intercept the surface above the valley floors.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolters' hazard exposure. A "micro-analysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries and a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. The re-search emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment design problems that lead to human error accidents.

The key objective of forming a cartel is to increase profits to members of the cartel by taking the following action: a) control output; and b) control price. However, while attempting to obtain monopoly profits the cartel members have to contend with costs associated with cartelization and such costs include the following: political costs; the cost of coordinating output and price; organizational costs (such as cheating); and administrative costs (such as the cost of attending cartel meetings). The objective of commodity exchanges is to provide an open, free market where buyers and sellers may openly complete transactions and pricing information can be immediately disseminated. These transactions include the following: a) to provide facilities for "hedging", or transferring price risk from buyers and sellers of physical commodities to "speculators" through the medium of buying and selling futures contracts, and b) taking physical delivery of metal on due dates.

Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

Secondary crushing often gets good press for its increases in energy efficiency and SAG milling rates but for a project considering this option the proposed benefits soon get overshadowed by implementation concerns. Reverse engineering from the published case studies is risky unless the reader understands the drivers impacting stability and operability of the circuit. This paper discusses the features of secondary crushing for Greenfield and Brownfield SAG mill grinding circuits. It is the author?s view that secondary crushing rarely adds value to a Greenfield project and restricts future expansion. Its application is best retro fitted to Brownfield operations where the benefit gained for capital expended is excellent. Two case studies are presented to reaffirm these statements. The first case study shows that the implementation of partial and total secondary crushing increases SAG mill power efficiency and it offers substantial incremental increases in milling throughput with staged capital investments for the crushing and grinding circuits respectively. The paper provides a critical analysis of process conditions for secondary-crushed grinding circuits, with particular emphasis on Brownfield circuit retrofits. Furthermore, the second case study quantifies the economic impact of secondary crushing on circuit design for plant start up and it illustrates the limit imposed on plant expansion.
