Laboratory batch and small - scale continuous flotation tests were conducted on a ferruginous barite - fluorspar ore from near Sweetwater , Tenn . , to determine the feasibility of producing commercial - grade fluorspar and barite concentrates . The lignin sulfonate - sodium fluoride - fatty acid method of floating fluorspar produced acid - grade concentrates . Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate yielded concentrates suitable for use as a weighting agent in oil -well drilling muds . The continuous flotation tests , treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour , yielded fluorspar concentrates that assayed 98.3 percent CaF2 and barite concentrates that assayed 91.2 percent BaSO4 . The recovery of the two minerals was 91.2 and 85.2 percent , respectively .

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the theoretical stress distribution in the vicinity of explosively expanded rock bolt anchors independent of their bolts. Plane-strain solutions applicable to this problem were obtained by combining the field pressure with the uniform pressure that would be produced by vertically placed anchors having 2-, 3-, and 4-foot spacings. High rock stress which would be produced by an anchor was localized, as would be expected from St. Venant's effect, and increased as the field pressure decreased.

Under the procedure of the American Standards Association, with the American Society for Testing Materials as sponsor, the Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals has arrived at the classification of coals by rank as shown in Table 14/. The standard explains the term "agglomerating" used for classification under physical properties, as follows: Agglomerating Index. - Coals which in the volatile-matter determination produce either an agglomerate button that will support a 500-g weight without pulverizing, or a button showing swelling or cell structure, shall be considered agglomerating from the standpoint of classification.***. Pending the adoption of a method by the American Society for Testing Materials, the coke-button grading test5,/ afforded by the examination of the residue in the platinum crucible incident to the volatile matter determination, shall be used.

[This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of specified French possessions in Africa has been prepared from the best information available in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. France controls large areas on the African continent, but the various Colonies and Dependencies are administered more or less independently. Algeria is under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior, and its mining laws are essentially the same as those of the mother country. Tunis and Morocco are attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; separate digests of the mining laws' of these respective colonies have already been prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The present paper covers all other French territory on the continent of Africa except Somaliland, a rather small Colony including the port of Djibouti near the point where the Red Sea joins the Gulf of Aden. Available information indicates that the prospects of mineral production in this Colony, apart from salt and gypsum, are not at all encouraging.3]

Knowledge of the types of naturally occurring sulfur compounds in petroleum is of both theoretical and practical interest to petroleum chemists and geologists. This knowledge has been extended by the identification of 77 sulfur compounds, including 36 thiols, 23 chain sulfides, and 18 cyclic sulfides in a 111° to 150° C boiling range distillate of Wasson, Texas, crude oil. The characterization procedure used in separating and identifying these compounds included isothermal distillation, vacuum fractionation, liquid-solid chromatography (alumina adsorption), chemical treatment, gas-liquid chromatography, microdesulfurization, and infrared analysis. The procedural steps described represent a systematic method of sulfur compound analysis considered applicable for determining the nature and concentration of the sulfur constituents present in any straight-run petroleum distillate of the above-boiling range.

Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to verify enhancements due to chloride and surfactant additions in the leaching system of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. A statistical experimental design was used and equipment was designed to eliminate contributions from changes in solution electrochemical potential during the course of the measurements. Results confirmed that chloride additions increased chalcopyrite leaching by as much as 94 pct over the electrochemical potential versus hydrogen electrode range of 630 to 750 mV at pH 1.7 and 50°C. Total iron concentration had no effect over the range of 1 to 5 g/L. The effect of surfactant addition was less well defined. While additions of LA 790 (a polyoxyethylene lauryl ether) resulted in increased copper leaching in several of the tests, the differences were too small to be statistically significant. No interaction effect could be verified.

Vermiculites are secondary minerals formed by the: alteration of biotite and philogopite mica and are associated with basic rocks such as dunites, serpentines, and pyroxenites. Vermiculite was first described by T. H. Webb in 1824. It remained a mineralogical curiosity until 1913, when the first commercial deposit was discovered in the Turrett mining district of Colorado. Expanded or exfoliated vermiculite was first marketed in 1915 from a deposit in this district 5 miles southeast of Hecla, Colo. This activity was brief, but successful and continuous commercial development began in 1921 in Montana. "Exposure to airborne dust in coal mines has caused respiratory disease in coal miners. The causal agent in these diseases remains unknown, although the minerals found in and around the coal seam have been implicated. Toxicological studies designed to establish the effect of different mineral combinations and concentrations are lacking because the mineral content of coal mine dust has not been defined. This paper reports the initial results of a study done to characterize the mineral content of the coal mine dust found in a mine in the Upper Freepott seam in Northern West Virginia. Coal mine dust samples were collected using 4- stage cassette impactors at nine locations in the mine. The samples were analyzed by an x-ray microdiffraction film technique supplemented by energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. Primary size modes of about 17 to 20 micrometers from the samples collected at the haulageway and the returnside of the continuous miner were found. From the returnside of the roof bolter samples, a primary size mode of 12to15 micrometers was measured. The minerals found in high percentages were illite, kaolinite, quartz, and calcite. The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases has been well recognized; however, the reasons for variation in occurrence of these diseases among miners in different geographic areas,(1) rank of coal seams,(2-3) and jobs (4) remain uncertain. Several papers have reported on the causal agent in the development of these diseases. Davis (5) found that the percentage of the non-coal minerals present in the lungs of deceased miners increased as the level oi pneumoconiosis became more severe. Reisner (6) reported that cell damage caused by coal mine dust increases with the mineral and quartz content of the dust and with the geo· logical age and rank of the coals. Two studies, investigating the in vitro effects of mineral dusts. reported by Seemayer and Manojlovic (7) also obtained positive correlation between cytotoxicity and the mineral content of coal mine dust. Gormly (8) postulated that destruction of macrophages by certain mineral dusts is the first step in the development of pneumoconiosis. In 1980, Adamis and Timar (9) reported that quartz. sandstone, slate. respirable colliery dust. bentonite, illite, and some kaolins had cytotoxic effects on rat peritoneal macrophages""in vitro."" Walton,(10) however, reported that the presence of high clay, illite, and kaolin mineral exposures reversed the hazards associated with increasing quartz exposures. This finding was supported by Le Bouffant and coworkers.(11) They reported that illite present in coal mine dust strongly inhibited the pathogenic effects of quartz while kaolin had a weaker inhibitory effect."

The use of nuclear fission for chemical process heat offers the special advantage of high temperature, limited only by materials of construction. The process heat may be supplied economically at elevated pressures, since no compression of combustion air is required. For the initial effort in developing a high-temperature reactor, the indirect cycle, using helium as the heat-transfer medium, was chosen. The major problems are the design of high-temperature fuel elements, construction of an exchanger to transfer heat to process streams in the range of 2,500° F., and development of compressors capable of recycling helium at 1,000° F. and above. A conceptual design of a nuclear reactor to furnish process heat for coal gasification has been made. Spherical fuel elements utilizing a graphite structure, impregnated with uranium carbide fuel, were chosen, as spheres offer the possibility of easier loading and unloading of the reactor. Calculations of pressure drop and gas-pumping power for the system are included.

Improved practice resulting from recent changes in the method of supplying compressed air and in pneumatic drilling equipment used in secondary drilling and in development work at the Morenci mine of the Phelps Dodge Corp., has resulted in improved safety conditions, as well as in a reduced cost per foot of drilling. A large stationary compressor installed outside the mining area and the compressed-air pipelines in the mine were replaced by portable compressor units. A self-propelled, self-contained drilling unit was obtained for drilling large footages where short moves were involved. Large wagon-drill units were replaced by faster and lighter drill machines and conventional bits by carbide insert bits. The safe practices employed in air drilling and in the related blasting and scaling operations have contributed to an excellent safety record at this mine. The complete sets of instructions listed in the company codes of safe practice aid materially in training employees.

As part of its effort to reduce the need for strategic minerals through conservation and to reduce the capital and energy requirements of mineral processing, the Bureau of Mines has investigated a method for preparing ferrochromium alloys containing less than 2 percent carbon. This method will conserve chromium and should reduce the capital and energy requirements for chromite reduction. Reduced products containing less than 2 wt-pct C and as low as 0.01 wt-pct C were obtained by reacting pellets of chromite and carbonaceous reductant mixtures at pressures of 0.1 to 1 torr and temperatures of 1,230° to 1,320° C. The extent of reduction increased with increased temperature and decreased pressure; however, operating conditions were limited due to the onset of significant chromium vaporization at higher temperatures and lower pressures. Foundry coke, anthracite, and carbon black were found to be supe¬rior to graphite as reductants. The reduction of chromite to metallics was found to proceed via the carbide intermediates (Fe,Cr)7C3 and (Fe,Cr)23C6, No evidence of carbide intermediates Fe3C or Cr3C2 was found. Buttons of ferrochrome alloys were made by melting a mixture of reduced products with CaO and Si02 at 1,700° C for 20 minutes in an induction furnace,

Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

The Dike and Eaton veins in Crittenden County, Ky. (fig. 1), are along northwesterly trending relief fractures that lie between two northeastward striking major faults - the Moore Hill and- the Levias, in Crittenden County, Ky. The veins contain small, narrow, irregular ore bodies of fluorspar with subordinate quantities of sphalerite and galena. Gravel fluorspar was found on the surface in the Eaton vein, and open-cut mining was in progress on the W. M. Conyer property about 1900. Discovery of fluorspar in the Dike vein came much later, about 1933, on the W. H. LaRue tract, but the principal production on the Dike vein started after the discovery of gravel spar in 1938 on the land of the P. J. Gilless estate. Production from the Eaton vein was estimated at 9,400 tons and that from the Dike vein at 15,700 tons, a total of 25,100 tons. A large part of this production was gravel fluorspar from within 50 foot of the surface. Beneath the gravel spar the veins are very narrow, averaging 2 to 2.5 feet in width, and the ore shoots are small. The deepest mine level was 140 feet below the surface, and the deepest shaft 150 foot. Orb was concentrated by log washer or sent unwashed to custom mills at Marion, Ky. about 6 miles distant.

Salt mixtures consisting of KC1, BaC12, and HfCl4 with RbCl or CsCl were investigated as electrolytes for refining hafnium. The presence of RbCI or CsCl in the electrolyte appeared to suppress the volatility of. Best electrorefining was obtained with an electrolyte containing 50.7 percent KCl, 27.l percent BaCl2, 15.7 percent CsCl, and 6.5 percent HfCl4. In this electrolyte, hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of 470 ppm was produced from an anode feed containing l,600 ppm oxygen. All metallic impurities were lowered, except titanium, manganese, and tin.

The basic mining law of Netherland India is contained in N. I. Statute 1899 , No. 214 , as amended by N. I. Statute 1910 , No. 588 , and 1919 , No. 4 , which is quoted as the " Indian Mining Law, " the effective date of which was fixed as May 8 , 1907 , by proclamation dated October 12 , 1906. The Indian Mining Law was supplemented by Ordinance No. 38 , of 1930 , which was passed by the Volksraad on March 18 , 1930 , to become effective on October 1 , 1930 ( superseding an earlier ordinance entitled " Government Gazette , " 1906 , No. 434) . An important law with respect to American petroleum rights , Statute No. 23 , passed February 9 , 1928 , approving contracts between the Indian Government and the Netherland subsidiary of a large American oil company , is in the nature of a private law or of an enabling act ( see section of this paper entitled " Rights of Foreigners" ) . Statute 1930 , No. 348 , effective October 1 , 1930 , sets forth in minute detail conditions under which prospecting and mining permits may be granted. Statute 1930 , No. 341 , effective October 1 , 1930 , embodies the police regulations of the mining industry.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of columbium from 19 deposits (3 producers and 16 nonproducers) in 7 market economy countries (MEC?s). Brazil has the largest recoverable columbium resource, posessing approximately 2.39 million metric tons Wmt), or 69 pet of the MEC total (3.47 Mmt). The Western Hemisphere countries of Brazil, Canada and the United States contain 3.14 Mrnt of recoverable columbium or 90 pnt of the MEC total. Columbium recovered as a byproduct of tin mining is not included as part of MEC resources in this study. Currently producing mines are Araxa and Catalao in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada, These three mines have 2.42 Mmt of recoverable resources or approximately 69 pct of the MEC total. It is estimated that these mines, operating at full capacity, could satisfy cumulative MEC demand (based on an annual growth rate of 5.1 pct) for the next 20 yr. The United States is totally dependent upon foreign sources for its columbium supply. The majority of U.S. columbium is imported from Brazil in the form of steelmaking- grade ferrocolumbium. Canada has been the sole source of pyrochlore concentrates since Brazil discontinued exports in 1981. The United States also imports small (but important) quantities of columbium as columbite concentrates from Nigeria and Brazil, as columbite contained in tin slags from Thailand and Malaysia, and as synthetic concentrates from the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Research performed by the U.S. insurance industry has determined that mine subsidence is uninsurable. Consequently, the insurance industry has decided not to voluntarily offer mine subsidence insurance. The U.S. Department of the Interior has long been investigating the effects of mine subsidence. These investigations have resulted in Federal regulations and controls of mine subsidence. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report generally describes mine subsidence, the development of mine subsidence insurance programs, and the eight current mine subsidence insurance programs in the United States. The States that have these subsidence programs include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Major aspects of the programs include history, administrative and operational procedures, insurable structures, recognition of mine subsidence, major exclusions, claims, insurance premiums, and the economic health of each program. Addresses of agencies involved with mine subsidence insurance are also given. Information within this report can be useful for residential and commercial property owners and mine operators. States that are considering starting or have an existing mine subsidence insurance program can also use this report as a model for initiating or modifying their programs.
