Mr. D. H. BRowne's paper upon " The Distribution of Phosphorus in the Ludington Mine" (Trans., xvii., 616) has interested me very much, and perhaps I cannot give a better proof of that, interest than an account of my work and observations in the same direction while chemist of the Hudson River Ore and Iron Company. The ores of this company lie in a chain of low hills running northwest and southeast, about three miles back from the eastern bank of the Hudson river, below Hudson, N. Y. They occur in thick veins, with the characteristic Hudson river slate formation as hangingrock and foot-wall, and dip about 45' east, outcropping in many places near the top of the western slopes.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique. Weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure erosion, it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Corrosion rate, erosion rate, and total erosion/corrosion rate are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

A new $18-million hydrometallurgical ore treatment facility for the recovery of molybdenum oxide was dedicated at Climax, Colo., on November 19 by Climax Molybdenum Co., division of AMAX. The Company has been producing molybdenum from molybdenite (MoS2) ores since 1918. Now oxide values, formerly lost in the sulfide flotation plant tailing are to be processed to yield about 3 million Ib per year of metal. In 1965, Climax produced about 50% of world molybdenum from sulfide ore. This ore is mined at the rate of 42,000 tpd. The annual production of concentrate is 100 million lb containing 90% to 92% MoS2, or about 50 million lb of metal. As only a relatively small portion of the total Climax production is sufficiently enriched in oxide molybdenum to process through the new plant, 5700 tpd of selected ore containing 1.5 lb of Mo per ton is now treated by the new process.

In the United States, the consumption of lignite and subbituminous coals is increasing. A variety of energy-oriented companies have leased large blocks of reserves, new large power plants are in operation and being constructed, and new producing mines are being developed. The Bureau of Mines has maintained an active interest in the utilization of low-rank coals for many years. In 1951, with the completion of the Bureau's Grand Forks Coal Research Laboratory, an organizational unit was established for studies in lignite preparation. Since that time, numerous investigations have been completed. This research has dealt almost exclusively with lignite, but since subbituminous coals have many similar characteristics, the findings can often be applied to both types of coal.

6.2-1. Historical Development. Hammering on hand-held drill steel was the earliest type of percussion drilling. It was not until 1838 that Singer developed a steam-operated drilling machine that lifted a drilling bar and let it drop by gravity. J. J. Couch of Philadelphia patented the first percussion drill in 1849. His machine was a steam drill which literally hurled the drill bar at the rock and retracted it by means of a ratcheted wheel. Later J. W. Fowle added automatic rotation of the steel. In 1871, Simon Ingersoll patented a rock drill mounted on a tripod which permitted drilling holes at any angle, vertical to horizontal. Up to the turn of the century, percussion drills in use were piston-type drills. The drill steel was solid and attached to an extension of the drill piston. Hole cleaning was accomplished by the pumping action of the steel in the hole. Down-holes were drilled wet and cleaned with a blow pipe while up-holes were drilled dry, allowing the cuttings to drop out by gravity. The forerunner of our present hammer drill was the free-piston drill which was first patented in 1884, by Sargent. Because solid drill steel was used, it did not successfully clean down holes. J. G. Leyner solved the problem of applying the hammer drill principle to down-hole and horizontal-hole work in 1897. The key was to pass com- pressed air and water through hollow drill steel to clean the hole. Leyner's work on valves and rotation mechanisms increased the blows per minute of hammer drills from 300 or 400 up to 1800 and more blows per minute and made possible the first lightweight drilling machines. [The statistics contained in this paper were collected for the United States Geological Survey and communicated to the Institute, by permission, prior to their publication in the report on the Mineral Statistics of the United States for 1887.1 The total coal-production of Alabama in 1887 was about 1,950,000 short tons, the spot-value of which, at the mines, was $2,535,000. A theoretical calculation of the electro-osmotic circulation of liquid in a rectangular micro-electro-phoresis cell was presented by Smoluchowski (1921) and Komagata (1933). According to their theories, the velocity of liquid changes with depth such that the velocity distribution may be represented by a symmetrical parabola in the cell. Their theories appear contrary to the results of our experiments which show that the velocity distribution curve is represented by a symmetrical parabola whose symmetrical axis is displaced from the center line of the cell. A similar phenomenon had been suggested by Lane and White in 1937 based on the latter's theory which seemingly was incomplete. By using methods of measuring electrophoretic velocities based on the above three theories, serious errors are obvious. We are thus proposing a unified theory for determining the electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles in a rectangular cell. The equations of Smoluchowski, Komagata and White can be derived from our theory as special cases. On the basis of our theory, we are proposing an improved method of determining the precise electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles based solely on the coefficients of the velocity distribution curve. In our experiments, this method gives satisfactory results. We determined the relation between the zeta-potential and pH value of suspension for several minerals.

This study initiated to explore the potential of commercial chelating extractant for beneficiation of minerals revealed "LIX "65N to be an excellent collector for cuprite and chrysocolla. The collector action of the LIX is proposed to result from its chelation with copper species on the surface of the minerals. Thus, the syn-isomer of LIX65N, which is unable to form a chelate with copper ions, failed also to act as a collector. The proposed mechanism takes into account partitioning of LIX between the mineral surface (to form a surface chelate) and the copper chelate dispersed in the bulk aqueous phase (either due to formation of the chelate with dissolved copper, or due to detachment of chelate formed at surface). The efficiency of the collection is dependent upon this partitioning since the bulk chelate is found unable to collect. The marked decrease in flotation obtained when copper was added to the system supports this mechanism. The dependence of flotation of chrysocolla and cuprite on pH and reagentizing time is discussed on the basis of the proposed mechanism. Batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of oxide, sulfide and mixed oxide-sulfide copper minerals with quartz demonstrated the ability of LIX to separate the copper minerals from quartz.

IN a recent investigation of the Mn-Ge system by Zwicker it was reported that two inter-metallic compounds in this system, Mn,Ge, and Mn,Ge,, exhibited ferromagnetic properties. Of these, Mn,Ge, was reported as "strongly magnetic" and Mn,Ge, was said to be "weakly magnetic" but no actual values were given. In a study of magnetic alloys of nonmagnetic elements sponsored by the United States Army Signal Corps at Lehigh University, test bars having the nominal composition of these compounds were prepared by pressing elemental powders and sintering them in a purified helium atmosphere. Magnetic values obtained on these compounds are reported in Tables I and 11. It should be cautioned that the test bars were somewhat porous and that X-ray patterns run on these materials indicated that the homogenization in the samples was not complete, but that in each case the compound reported on was the dominant phase. The (B-H) max and particularly the Br values for pure dense M&Ge, can, therefore, be expected to be somewhat higher than those reported herein, while those for Mn,Ge, may be in error in either direction. Further details on this investigation are available in previous publications.23

With a productive output growing at an annual rate of 8%, the Soviet mining industry should emerge as the world's leader in total mineral output during the 1980's. (The Soviet Union's share in the world's total mineral output in 1973 was estimated at 22 to 23%.) According to estimates by Soviet mining experts, the mineral potential of the Soviet Union will sustain the current 8% annual growth rate in the future.

Consumption of fluorspar in the United States in the last ten years has doubled to 1.34 million tons. One main, reason for the increase has been the use of the basic oxygen furnace to produce steel which requires considerably more fluorspar than the open hearth. The increasing consumption of aluminum and fluorocarbon chemicals will require more fluorspar, Since 1964 domestic fluorspar prices have advanced over 70%. Maximum prices were attained in 1971 and remain stable. These higher prices have brought about the expansion of production capacity at many of the present mines and mills. Exploration has been intensified, resulting in new discoveries, which are being brought into production. Many deposits, heretofore considered uneconomical, are being reappraised for possible development. Companies who have not previously mined fluorspar are actively seeking and acquiring new properties. The outlook for the continued health of the domestic fluorspar industries is favorable at present prices; however, it is doubtful that production will be greatly increased. New production will have to come from presently inaccessible areas of much greater distance from consuming centers. Prices will have to be higher to support this production. Domestic fluorspar production meets only 20% of domestic consumption. Thus, reliance on imports on fluorspar in the future will become increasingly more critical.

A small group of members of the Institute headed by W. H. Shockley, has insistently demanded that the Institute submit to the members for letter ballot the question of our using in our publications and corre-spondence certain so-called "simplified spellings." The principal argu-ment in favor of this proposal is written by Mr. Shockley and will be submitted in full to the membership for ballot. It rests chiefly on the desirability of saving the time of school children in the learning of the spelling of the English language. A sample of correspondence had with one of the gentlemen on this subject is given herewith in order that members may see what the correspondence and publications of the Institute would look like if we adopted the proposals. This sample was chosen at random: "Onse I condemd the report ov a president of the Institute. He did not pruve his case even on paper-"a hot air profet," I sed. Time has pruved he was." "I rote yu about the muvement to better the spelling in the Institute Bulletin, etc., neglecting to say some things that I mite hav said and things hav happened since which no member ov a democratically governed society shoud stand without protest."

What progress has been made in rapid excavation of tunnels and shafts? Where do we go from here? To get some answers to these questions was the reason that 500 tunnel men-contractors, geologists, professors, lawyers, mining engineers--came to the University of Minnesota May 15-17. The attendance of 500 astonished conference organizer Professor D. H. Yardley, who had anticipated half that number. They came from Japan, South Africa, Austria, Sweden, and Australia to name a few, and an officer of the Corps of Engineers thought all his people should have been there. The Civil and Mining Engineering Departments of the University combined for the program, which was staged by M. K. Cragun for the General Extension Division. The Saga of the Oso Tunnel The present state of the art of rapid excavation is "good." There is little controversy about where we go from here and what's more, this reporter finds that the technical know-how to automate excavation in any kind of ground is extant, even if it will take some years to achieve this state. The fluid energy mill has been in use since the 1930's when an early patent was granted to N.H. Andrews in the USA. The microniser design has been basically unaltered since that date and current designs such as the Airfilco "Micronizer" have been progressively developed from results based on wide experience. The authors have been engaged in a research programme to establish optimum design and operational parameters for the Micronizer so as to provide a more quantitative basis for scale-up prediction of results. An introductory section will first trace the development of fluid energy milling including reference to other designs which have developed alongside the micronizer (especially the “Jet-o-miser"). With regard to design features the number of fluid injection nozzles and their size was investigated to establish the optimum range. Injection angle and, the consequent diameter of the internal "tangential circle" was carefully studied to determine the effect of this parameter on product size. The research was carried out using fine limestone as the test material with air as the grinding medium. Feed size fractions of 0-120µm, 0-250µm, 0-500µm, and 300-600µm were milled and product size analyses were carried out using the Coulter Counter technique.

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. Graphs representing the standard free-energy of formation as a function of temperature for 21 fluorides are presented, along with estimated values for the standard free-energy of formation of 20 atedadditional fluorides. A few of the many possible uses of these data in metallurgical calculations are discussed, including the fluorination of oxides, sulphides, metallurgicaland chlorides, and the reduction of metal fluorides. RECENT papers which have presented free-energy data for oxides, sulphides, chlorides, carbonates, sulphates, and silicates in the form of free energy vs. temperature plots,1-5 have found important uses in teaching and metallurgical development work. This method of presentation of thermo-dynamic data serves to make available in readily usable form thermodynamic constants which are scattered throughout the literature, and to show by graphical means the stability relations which exist between the compounds of a given type. It is certainly desirable to have these free-energy-temperature diagrams for as many types of compounds as are of present or potential use in metallurgical processes. Thus, even though there are but few uses of metallic fluorides in extractive metallurgy today, the potential uses of fluorine processes are of great importance and serve as the principal justification of this paper. Recent developments in the production of fluoro-carbons have resulted in vastly improved methods for the production and handling of fluorine and corrosive fluorides, with consequent reduction in costs.".' The extractive metallurgist should no longer overlook possible fluorine processes when development of a new process for a relatively high unit-price metal is being considered. In a previous paperv he author outlined in some detail the importance and use of free-energy data in metallurgical calculations and also discussed the properties of a standard free-energy vs. temperature diagram. The same method of presentation is adopted in this paper, and the reader is referred to the earlier work for explanations of the use of free-energy data. Thermodynamic Data This paper presents standard free-energy vs. temperature diagrams, Figs. 1 and 2, for those fluorides for which the major thermodynamic constants are known. In the calculations of the standard free-energy of formation (AGO), values of the enthalpy of formation at 298°K (?Ho,) were taken from "Selected Values of Thermodynamic Constants"8 most of the values of standard entropy at 298°K (S°298) were taken from "Selected Values"," but in a few cases the values given by Kelley9 ere preferred; data for the Phase changes came from "selected Values" and several of Kellley's publics- tions;0-12 and most of the specific-heat data were taken from Kelley.l0 The appendix gives a detailed list of the sources of the data. As explained in an earlier paper,6 he accuracy of some of the standard free-energy relationships is not high. An error of +1 kcal at 1000°C is expected in most of the curves of Figs. 1 and 2. The error may be as high as +3 kcal in some of the curves. Rather than attempt to estimate the reliability of each curve, the source of the data used is reported in the appendix, and the reader may compare these data with newer values as they become available. Figs. 1 and 2 fail to show values for the fluorides of many important metals. In most cases this is because the entropy of the metallic fluoride is unknown. For preliminary calculations it is often useful to have available the best estimate of an unknown datum, rather than no information at all. With this in mind, Table I lists estimated standard free-energy values for a number of important metallic fluorides not included in Figs. 1 and 2. The values reported in Table I were, calculated by Brewer et al.13 and are based on estimated entropy values. The estimated uncertainty of the values for each fluoride were calculated from the uncertainty values given by Brewer1' for ?H°, and the entropy function.

JOHN MARBLE, mining engineer, coal operator, philanthropist, member of the Institute since 1879, vice-president in 1903-04, has been paid the well deserved tribute of Honorary Membership. The presentation of the diploma was made at a luncheon in New York on Feb. 13, the citation reading: "In recognition of his work as an engineer and administrator of mines and his services to mining engineering education." Within the last month Lafayette University dedicated the new John Markle Mining Engineering Building, the gift of the eminent alumnus for whom it is named. In addition, Mr. Markle has contributed a maintenance fund for the carrying out of far-reaching plans for improving the mining courses to be given at the Institution. One of his theories is that quality rather than quantity of engineering graduates is the need of the profession. John Markle was born in Hazleton, Pa., in 1858. He received his degree of M. E. at Lafayette in 1880, and married Mary Estelle Robinson in New York City in 1884. Since 1880 he has been associated continuously with the firm of G. B. Markle & Co., and its successor companies. He has also been an official of numerous other important companies, although he is now retired from active business life.

THE material available for mineralogic study, consisted of drill cores, 2 to 3 in. thick, supplemented by small well cuttings. Such study has added no essential new information regarding the minerals, though the refractive indices, used for determinative purposes, have been determined more accurately than before, permitting the development of a scheme for the rapid identification of these minerals. The essential points brought out by the investigation are two: (1) that certain mineral associations evidently point the way to an understanding of the geologic history and (2) that a definite sequence of mineral formation has taken place so that the original minerals formed have been in part-reacted on producing new compounds and associations; Twenty minerals have been found.
