Nalco Chemical Company and a North Carolina Phosphate operation have formed a successful supplier/customer team effort that has resulted in major improvements in the operation of the clay thickening circuit at the Aurora, North Carolina concentrator. A Nalco OPTICUS® Automated Process Control System for thickener and flocculant control was installed in 1994. The paper will discuss in detail the development and refinement of the OPTICUS system over the past three years. The paper will survey the development and networking of process control for monitoring, controlling and operating four 325-foot Dorr-Oliver thickeners, three 80-foot high-rate Enviro-Clear thickeners and control links to the facility's clay/gypsum blending operation.

Apatite ore plays a critical and irreplaceable role in fertilizer production and is being upgraded in quality in northern Vietnam. The old tailing of the Bac Nhac Son beneficiation plant (Vietnam) has a significant apatite amount in the form of coarse unliberated particles. These millions of tons of tailing ore have 6–8% of P2O5 content, which can be retreated to provide fertilizer factories. This work presents the results obtained in recovering apatite from this tailing in the laboratory. By the combination of the processes of classification, preliminary flotation, re-grinding and cleaning in the flotation column, an apatite concentrate of 30.68% P2O5 can be obtained with the total recovery of 37.76% from the initial tailing of 7.56% P2O5. The study results not only provide an appropriate technical solution for recovering the apatite ore from tailing ore but also have outstanding meaningness in the recovery of mineral resources under the context of a circular economy.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, concentration, hypochlorite consumption, and bed height on the total gold extraction. At high pH, the hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption is decreased. At room temperature, the total gold extraction is proportional to the hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10 and 80 percent are obtained for 12 and 167 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption gold extraction was increased by shortening the ore column height. Finally, calcium hypochlorite is more effective than sodium hypochlorite.

"INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar» filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product. Lab and pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70\ -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20\ are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press. Currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 Series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50\ to achieve these results.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

In 1970, of the 603 million tons of coal produced in the United States, 339 million tons, or 56%, were produced by under- ground mines. While the ratio of underground to surface production has been decreasing in the last few years, it is anticipated that a 60:40 ratio of underground to surface-mined coal will remain for some time. Underground coal operators are continuing to invest in new mines and are interested in increasing the efficiency of all their operations. One area for improvement is in mine planning and design, particularly in the area of selection of equipment for operation. Because of the availability of a wide variety of equipment, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, such a choice must be made on the basis of technological facts and forecasts related to the mining operation. If the mining conditions can be reasonably predicted, along with a mining plan, it should be possible to insure the selection of the right equipment for the particular application. In order to increase the efficiency of underground coal operations, it is necessary to understand not only the operating system in detail, but the inter-relationships between system components and the operating environment. With such an understanding comes the application of simulation and other operations research techniques to plan and operate mining systems. Computer simulation studies have been successfully adapted to underground coal mining, and applications by Prelaz et al. (1965), and Manula and Sanford (1969) are some that are being used by the mining companies. However, a need still exists for better understanding of certain intra-system and system-environment interactions in order that computer simulation programs may be provided with better input data for more effective application. This paper deals with one aspect of the coal-winning system in need of better definition, namely, studying the performance of continuous miners.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

If one considers that prehistoric man's first house may have been a limestone cave, calcium carbonate may be the most timeless of all building materials. Fanciful history aside, CaCO3 has been used for countless applications in human habitats. After all, tine marble block and tiles have always been the hallmark of eloquents and style. Mortars and cements derived from limestone have held together the very blocks of our civilization. In modem times, synthetic polymers are blended with ground limestone to produce everything from pipe, floor tile, cultured marble and house siding. All of these miracles of our technology contain CacO3 of various sizes and in varying amounts. This paper will discuss some of the critical attributes of CaCO3 which make it suitable for the new building products that have helped increase our standard of living. The vehicle of discussion will be a residential, single family house.

The following paper describes an overview of evaluations for assessing the potential hazards associated with handling newly developed reagents used in the mining industry. Important factors in determining the risk and hazard associated with handling a particular chemical include hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. The hazard evaluation step involves collecting and evaluating appropriate toxicology information on a chemical. This can include a comparison of the structure of a developmental chemical with that of a material with known toxicology information. Acute toxicology data, including oral, inhalation, and dermal LD50 values, eye and skin irritation data and sensitization or allergic potential information are typically generated for new chemicals. Environmental and in-vitro genetic toxicology data (e.g. Ames test) are also used to evaluate new mining reagents.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

A new method of pillar stability evaluation was proposed. The unique feature about the method is that it estimates two types of stability factors for the pillar. The first stability factor is to measure how much the applied stress at that point is smaller than its strength, and the second stability factor is to predict whether or not the pillar will fail violently. The strain-softening behavior of coal pillars was simulated by the Drucker-Prager yield criterion. A new algorithm that simulates the strain-hardening behavior of the gob was used. A numerical technique to estimate the local mine stiffness (LMS) was introduced and verified by both numerical and analytical methods. A case of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine was used to define the stability limits for the proposed method.

The paper aims at promoting sustainability assessment and reporting into practice using a globally acceptable set of guidelines and a common framework for internal and external reporting at a project/site level. Indicators are used for measuring performance, and this paper addresses development and implementation of performance indicators for sustainability assessment and reporting at local as well as global levels. The selection of a proper set of indicators is a challenging task. The indicators selected should provide the expected information for making right decisions. Relevant and credible sustainability reporting supported by a consistent performance indicator system can be the starting point for benchmarking environmental and social performance for the natural resources sector.

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Injection of inert gases to combat mine fires has been practiced in various parts of the world for a long time. Of late, nitrogen has become the preferred inert gas for control of mine fires and safe salvage of longwall equipment as compared to carbon dioxide or fuel gases produced from burning of fuel. In India, carbon dioxide has been used for fire fighting in a number of mines during the 1960s and 1970s. More recently inert gas produced from burning of fuel oil in surface plants has been used in controlling the atmosphere in fire areas in two mines. In yet other cases, liquid nitrogen has either been poured directly into fire areas in liquid form or injected in gaseous form to keep the fire in check. Nitrogen produced in liquid form in an oxygen plant is more costly than nitrogen produced from PSA (pressure swing adsorption) based plants. A PSA-based plant has been installed in one of the Indian mines in 1986 and more are in the offing. This paper reviews the application of various inert gases in Indian mines and discusses the likely trend of inert gas application in Indian mines in the future.

Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. According to Arbiter (Reference 1), the ball mill was invented by Brückner in Germany in 1876 and was first used in the United States on ores about 1905. The basic concept was a simple rotating cylindrical drum in which the tumbling action of the charge of material and grinding media resulted in size reduction of the material. Despite the very low mechanical efficiency of this method a number of factors have caused the tumbling mill to remain, by far, the most widely used piece of equipment for mineral grinding. The principal factors influencing this situation have been simplicity of design, ease of manufacture, ready adaptability to familiar material handling layouts and the absence of practical alternatives acceptable to the industry. In the early mills, the material was ground in batches, the mills being charged and discharged through doors in the shell. The shell was supported by means of solid trunnion shafts resting in plain bearings and the drive was accomplished through one of these shafts. In some later batch mills, the mill shell was supported on rollers which were also used to drive the mill. At an early stage, continuous operation was made possible by feeding and discharging the mill through hollow trunnions, the method still in most widespread use. The mechanical and structural design of the early mills was not an onerous engineering task. Norse sense and good practical knowledge were key qualifications. The mill shells had to be heavy enough to withstand the physical abuse they would receive in the field and the bearings had to have low enough unit pressures and sufficient wear retol to ensure several months of operation before the need for replacement occurred. When these requirements were satisfied, stresses developed in the equipment during operation were insignificant and the majority of structural failures were probably due to the use of inferior materials in manufacture. The disposal of hazardous chemical wastes will be one of the major environmental issues of the 1980s. About 45 Mt of hazardous wastes are produced yearly. One major aspect of the problem is the siting, design, and construction of' environmentally acceptable disposal facilities to accommodate this huge volume of material. Surface mines have been considered attractive for development as disposal sites for several reasons. • Surface mines offer an open pit that can conveniently serve as a repository for wastes. This could represent a significant economic, savings when compared with sites on undisturbed lands that might require extensive excavation or embankment construction. • Surface mines often have an abundance of mine spoil available that could potentially serve as construction material. This could result in a significant economic advantage over other sites that might require extensive amounts of construction material to be excavated or hauled in. • Operation of a commercial disposal facility in a surface mine can reduce or totally alleviate reclamation costs. • For an abandoned surface mine, conversion into a disposal facility could represent a positive form of land use and may provide a means for reclaiming lands that would otherwise remain unreclaimed. Despite these positive reasons, there are many technical factors associated with surface raining that can make the prospect of disposal site development an uncertain one. Before discussing factors associated with mining that can present siting, design, or construction problems, some understanding of the basic components of a chemical waste disposal facility is necessary.

The emphasis in this paper is focussed on dry bulk car go or the same cargo converted to slurry form for ease of handling. It is this type of cargo which is of primary interest to the mining industry whose products it represents to a large extent. The design problems associated with the handling of liquid bulk and of unitized cargo are sufficiently different to be treated separately. This paper then will consider the port handling facilities of dry bulk commodities as part of a system consisting of (1) the movement of products to the port area, (2) the movement of products out of the port area and (3) the handling of products within the port area itself. Expanding within these three components of the total transportation system, the paper will discuss the various difficulties encountered concerning the mode of transport into the port area and the method of handling product from transport to stockpile. Secondly, and before discussing the port area itself and in order to complete the conditions under which the port must operate, the movement of products out of the port area will be covered dealing with such items as the accommodation of the ship, problem associated with the very large ships, optimum berthing arrangements and the need to consider the various costs associated with the vessel. Finally the paper will review within the port or interface area such items as stockpiles, method of recovery, inventory control and an outline of the common design difficulties encountered. In all cases the relative influence on the total transportation costs of each of these dry bulk transportation system components will be considered.
