1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.

Based on previous investigations of ultrafine comminution in planetary ball mills, a new centrifugal mill has been developed which permits similar high stress conditions. Because this new type of mill is equipped with an immobile chamber, devices for measuring energy, for cooling the milling vessel, as well as, in continuous operation, for material feed and discharge can be more easily attached than to planetary ball mills. Observations of particle behaviour have shown that, in the case of dry grinding, most of the material is found on the mill walls even after short grinding times. Due to the fact that energy dissipation takes place mainly in the zone near the wall, a grinding system which reduces the amount of ball filling required is at an advantage.

Some of the considerations in designing these large blasts will be discussed with emphasis on those factors that concern powder factor, rock movement and fragmentation. Experimental designs are data acquisition plans which, if followed exactly, will quickly provide process engineers with information to assess statistically the individual and joint influence of factors on responses to permit of rapid decision making. Methodology employed to construct data acquisition plans is described in some detail. In production environments, factorial designs are appropriate for most purposes. Use of two level factorials to make decisions is described for a grinding circuit.

Using computer applications to solve mining problems began in the early 1960s, utilizing the large (for that day) centralized computing facilities at a few universities and major mining company headquarters. Many years passed before technology was adequate to allow any of those applications to be run at the mine sites to provide immediately available solutions. One of the first mining applications attempted was for ore reserve analysis and long- to medium-range mine planning. As these are among the most frequent and familiar minicomputer applications at the mine site, it is interesting to follow the evolution of computing and communications hardware which has finally allowed effective transfer of this technology.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 "Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys" adequately defines pulley assembly standards for light material handling applications. However, most mining applications demand pulleys of higher reliability and load capacity than that offered by CEMA standard pulleys. Various sources have published specifications for "Engineered" conveyor pulleys. Typically, these specifications require T-section type pulleys applicable to operating belt tensions exceeding 439 N/mm (2,500 lb./in.). This paper examines the application of CEMA standard pulleys, T-section pulleys and also a mining duty pulley design. The mining duty pulley fills the void between CEMA standard pulleys and T-section pulleys and can eliminate the high cost and long lead times associated with T-section type pulleys.

Although the United States has the world's largest coal reserves, most of those reserves will require underground mining. Unless underground injury and fatality rates are reduced, the number of disabling injuries and accidental deaths will grow as coal production increases. The Bureau's Mining Research Program, designed to reduce the exposure of workers to hazards while improving productivity, is described. Major program thrusts are 1) re- moving the hazards or removing miners from the areas in which hazards exist, 2) developing ways to improve management decisions and mining skills so as to reduce the incidence of situations requiring human involvement in hazardous, emergency, or corrective tasks, and 3) improving, or at least maintaining, productivity so that both the tangible (dollar) and intangible (human) costs are reduced. In these ways, projected demands for coal can be met using resources without an increase in human suffering.

INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. Marine sedimentary deposits account for 80% and igneous deposits 17% of the total world output of phosphate rock. The phosphate mineral is well crystallized and exhibits a greater floatability in the igneous deposits than the sedimentary ores. Both silicates and carbonates contribute the major gangue associated with the sedimentary ores. Although removal of silica from sedimentary phosphates by froth flotation has been in practice for several decades, with the depletion of high-grade reserves, new attempts are being made to improve the efficiency of current silica removal technology and to develop new processes for beneficiation of phosphate ores associated with the carbonate gangue. In this paper, recent developments in processing of sedimentary phosphate ores containing carbonate and silica gangue are discussed.

Modelling of cash flows and calculation of net present value of rate of return over the expected life of a mine/processing unit continues to be the accepted basis for mineral investment decision-making. The computer and spreadsheet programs have greatly improved ability to perform sensitivity and risk analysis, hence our ability to deal with key analytical problems. These problems of cash flow analysis result from the necessity of forecasting an uncertain and risky future. Cash flow models begin with the critical assumption of a "design basis", then integrate all of the variables relevant to the investment decision including forecasts of price, cost, taxation, financial conditions, and company strategy. Alternate "scenarios" portray possible future outcome of the investment decision. The potential for straying from reality is enormous. The computer has eliminated the time consuming hand calculations from the cash flow analysis, but the analyst still struggles with the risk of trying to predict "how the project will really turn out".

The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

Minproc Engineers has carried out the design construction and commissioning of thirty two process plants in the period 1978-87. Twenty eight are gold silver recovery plants, and of these twenty two were gold alone and six were gold and silver. In most plants carbon was used for gold adsorption. Desorption has been carried out using the USBM Homestake method, the Anglo American Research Laboratories method, and the Micron Methanol method. Electrowinning has utilised steel wool, stainless steel wool, and aluminium cathodes. Electrorefining using polished stainless steel cathodes is practised. Reliable prediction of wall pressures in a coal silo demands careful characterization of the stress-strain properties of the coal. This paper describes the results of triaxial compression tests on a typical fine-ground coal used in power generation and describes the fitting of several different constitutive models to the data. The fitted parameters for the constitutive models are well suited to application infinite element analyses. The different models are used to give the reader flexibility in choosing a model and to show the shortcomings of some models. To explore the quality of the fitting process, the fitted results are compared with finite element predictions of the triaxial test itself.

A concerted effort to determine the quantities and effects of trace elements in the environment requires the application of a number of different analytical techniques in the same or in different laboratories. The interpretation of analytical data is often difficult because of differing results between analysts or even by the same analyst at different times. Standard Reference Materials (SRM), which are certified for their trace element content and are in a matrix similar to the one of interest, can greatly increase the accuracy of analysis and the reproducibility between laboratories. The United States National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has developed a number of SRMs applicable to the determination of trace elements in environmental materials. Two of these, SRM-1571, Orchard Leaves, and SRM-1577. Bovine Liver, are excellent for biological tissue analyses. Several new standards are of value for fossil-fuel analyses. These are: SRM-1632. Trace Elements in Coal; SM-1633, Trace Elements in Fly Ash; SM-1634, Trace Elements in Residual Fuel Oil: and SRM-1635, Trace Elements in Gasoline. In cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the NBS has recently concluded an interlaboratory comparison involving analyses by more than 60 laboratories on these fossil-fuel materials. The resulu of this intercomparison and the broad range experience with the biological materials will be presented showing both intratechnique and intertechnique variations, and the sensitivities and comparisons with the values certified by NBS.

Veins in the Pyramid district of northwestern Nevada occur along steep fractures in Oligocene and Miocene quartz latite tuffs. The vein mineralization is zoned from a central enargite-pyrite zone outward through a complex polymetallic intermediate zone and an outer zone of galena and pyrite. Wall rock alteration includes advanced argillic and sericitic envelopes along veins superimposed on district-wide propylitization. The ore distribution and alteration patterns were probably produced by an increase in pH, a decrease in sulfur fugacity, along with cooling of the migrating hydrothermal fluid.

The selective adhesion of hydrophobic Mycobacterium phlei to coal particles is responsible for flocculation of fine coal from associated ash forming minerals. The driving force for the differential adhesion is the hydrophobic interactions between the fatty acid surface of the organism and hydrophobic nature of coal. The effect of Mycobacterium phlei on surface hydrophobicity, surface charge and mechanism of adhesion on coal and associated minerals are controlled by several factors including hydrophobicity and surface and solution chemistry of the system. Adhesion measurements indicate that maximum adhesion occurs below the isoelectric point (IEP) of the coal particles. While massive adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei is observed on coal, however, negligible amount of Mycobacterium phlei attaches to mineral pyrite and quartz.

This chapter focuses attention on major factors pertaining to plant design and general arrangement of equipment. Considered are efficiency of operations, coordination of maintenance and repairs, plant testing of reagents and possible future plant expansions. The design and general arrangement of equipment considers accessibility for maintenance and isolation for repairs, minimum personnel for operations and cleanup, safe working conditions with minimum interruptions to operations. The constant introduction of new reagents requires eventual plant testing and the manner of isolating a “line” or part of the facilities to allow comparisons in the testing of new reagents is discussed. As technology improves and process changes occur, additional equipment or plant expansions are inevitable. Space for these eventualities must be considered while the general arrangement drawings are in the development stages.
