"Pure sands are typically the domain of slurry shields due to their high permeability and their granular characteristics. However, the Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield machine technology has advanced in recent years with improved conditioning agents and shield machines that are equipped with slurry injection facilities and alternative mucking methods. These new so-called hybrid EPB machines have steadily increased the range of application of the EPB technology. The contribution discusses the capacities and operational features of hybrid EPB vs. slurry shield technology in pure sands. At the example of the Metro Line 4 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the contribution shows that hybrid EPB tunneling in pure sands is possible and it is compared with a state-of-the-art slurry shield project as the KASIG project in Karlsruhe (Germany). Furthermore, the control of the support pressure by means of foam conditioning and slurry injection in conjunction with a close, real-time monitoring of machine parameters is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shield and EPB technologies have both undergone significant developments in recent years, leading to the use of parts of one technology in the other and even to completely hybrid systems. Also the ranges of application (see recommendations by DAUB (DAUB 2010)) of both technologies have been shifted far beyond their original limits and are largely overlapping by now. Nevertheless, the basic principles of face support remain unchanged. Exploiting the possibilities of process data analysis (Maidl 2014), the interactions between the ground and the shield machine are a matter of research and have been intensely investigated. PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATION OF FACE SUPPORT PRESSURE Figure 1 shows the principles of two approaches for the determination of required support pressures: kinematic methods and numerical methods. Kinematic methods that are employed for the assessment of face stability only consider the situation in front of the TBM. The required face support force is determined by means of an assumed failure wedge that would form in ultimate limit state. Based on the ground properties, the vertical surcharge and the self-weight is transformed into a horizontal force along a virtual sliding surface. This horizontal force is to be balanced by the face support. The calculation results are amended by respective partial safety factors for water and earth pressure and the method-specific support pressure fluctuations are added."

This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Yucca Mountain Overview The U.S. Department of Energy?s Yucca Mountain Project is a geologic repository project designed to receive, handle, package, transport, and emplace spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The planned repository would be located in Yucca Mountain on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and would include both surface and subsurface areas. Yucca Mountain rock formations consist of successive layers of volcanic rocks (called tuffs) approximately 14 to 11.5 million years old, formed by eruptions of volcanic calderas to the north. With the volcanic rock the potential for methane emission is not an issue and the subsurface repository is a non-gassy (methane) classification. This paper will provide a summary of the development ventilation system design that provides fresh air for subsurface construction activities, and the emplacement ventilation system design that removes heat generated by the waste packages. The subsurface layout, illustrated in Figure 1, contains 108 emplacement drifts, one Performance Confirmation(PC) observation drift, nine intake/exhaust shafts, and three access ramps. The existing Yucca Mountain facilities, shown in bold lines in Figure 1, include a 7.8 km long, 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter U shaped tunnel that is formed by the North and South Ramps at both ends of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) drift and a 1.5 km long, 5.0 m (16.4 ft) diameter Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block drift (ECRB) that were constructed from 1994 through 1998. These drifts were used for site characterization activities and have been incorporated into the subsurface repository configuration. The unexcavated perimeter access main and exhaust main drifts are typically 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter TBM excavations and the emplacement drifts are 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM excavations. The turnouts leading into the emplacement drifts are to be excavated by either mechanical, or drill and blast methods and serve as the launch chambers for the emplacement drift TBM excavations.

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden. The extraction and processing of minerals from surface mines and quarries can produce significant fugitive emissions as a result of site activities such as blasting, unpaved road haulage, loading, primary crushing and stockpiling. Uncontrolled fugitive dust emissions can present serious environmental, health, safety and operational issues impacting both site personnel and the wider community. Simulation technology is finding increasing use for the purposes of advanced warning of potential problem emissions in addition to providing a basis for future planning applications where demonstrable compliance with regulatory requirements are necessary. The initial re-entrainment and subsequent dispersion of fugitive dust presents a process complicated by the combination of the in pit topography, the surrounding natural topography and the dynamic nature of emissions from these sites. These factors impact upon the accuracy and reliability of the conventional Gaussian plume based computational prediction methods employed for regulatory compliance and IPPC applications. This paper proposes that optimal modelling of open pit emissions may be more accurately achieved by the use of a multi-scale predictive modelling approach utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for high resolution near source dispersion and conventional Gaussian based methods for far field dispersion modeling. This paper presents a numerical based flow and dispersion analysis of a typical UK based open pit utilizing CFD in conjunction with a conventional Gaussian plume based methods. Typical operating emissions and meteorological conditions are obtained from long term data records collected at a large operating quarry extraction operation in the UK. Emissions are modelled using a Lagrangian framework within conventional atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) profiles expressed as functions of turbulence and velocity parameters under assumed neutral conditions. Results are presented in terms of the impact of site topography on in pit retention as compared to the Gaussian based method.

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal, D8 Cloverlick mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 2,000 ft deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain, Kentucky’s highest peak. D8 Cloverlick mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 70 ft above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby) seam. Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.

The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

A pond rehabilitation and environmental education project were proposed by Cleveland-Cliffs Michigan Operations (CCMO) and approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) as partial fulfillment of conditions for a stream mitigation permit. The goals of the project were the rehabilitation of a pond on a tributary of a local trout stream, enhancement of public access and appreciation, and the initiation of a site-based environmental educational curriculum. Cleveland-Cliffs undertook a suite of actions to rehabilitate a pond created by a previous mining operation in 1912 and make accessible to local schools the aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Cleveland-Cliffs partnered with the local governmental unit and two local school districts. The rehabilitated pond and riparian zone provide an accessible natural area that local residents can use for such activities as hiking, biking, walking, fishing and nature study. Vegetative enhancement includes the planting of native shrubs, wildflowers and showy herbaceous plants in the pond, on the riparian fringe and the surrounding area. An interpretive trail was developed around the pond with signs created by a local master watercolor artist. Local schools built and installed picnic tables, benches and a kiosk. Cleveland-Cliffs created pond lesson plans tied to the Michigan Curriculum Framework, developed inexpensive teaching kits and hosted a workshop for teachers from nine local schools. Classes regularly utilize the pond during the school year conducting environmental studies. Nesting boxes, wildflower gardens, bat houses, frog deformity surveys and water quality studies are a few of the activities that classes have conducted at the pond.

Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

Many mining operations have gained an impressive expertise in trouble shooting and maintenance with their existing fleet over the years. Whether it is an in-house maintenance group or an external service group - most of the systems weak points are well known and can be corrected by maintenance personnel. As some of these issues get more and more serious each year, too much time is lost in unscheduled downtime, often taking hours to be repaired and to find the failure with obsolete diagnostic tools (Fig. 1.). Many of the breakdowns result from failures that cannot be detected in advance. The maintenance system is much more reactive than preventative. The state of the art of mining equipment today uses advanced, efficient, and reliable systems for electrical drives, control and diagnostics of the machines. The demand for highly sophisticated solutions on such mining equipment is well known. Mining operators need to ensure the highest level of productivity, lowest operating costs, least maintenance and highest reliability in a drive system. The paper will introduce you to the state of the art of drives technology for dragline (Fig. 2) and shovel mining equipment (Fig. 3).

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

Deficient surface disposal systems of sulfidic mine waste often cause severe contamination of surface streams and groundwater reservoirs due to the oxidation of sulfide phases. The subsequent generation of leachates characterized by high acidity and elevated concentrations of toxic elements (commonly known as acid mine drainage) jeopardize the health of contiguous ecosystem. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is recognized as a promising solution for treating such wastes. S/S processes generally mobilize alkaline and/or cementing materials/additives that act as neutralizing and/or binding agents. In the present research, industrial byproducts, namely, cement kiln dust (CKD) and Class C fly ash (FAC) have been used as candidate materials along with the partial addition of sulfate-resistant cement (SRC) in the S/S of polymetallic sulfidic mine tailings (MT). The effectiveness of S/S was assessed by comparing laboratory experimental values obtained from unconfined compressive strength, hydraulic conductivity and leaching propensity tests of S/S samples with regulatory standards for safe surface disposal of such wastes. Despite general regulatory compliance of compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity, some solidified/stabilized-cured matrices were found unable to provide the required immobilization of pollutants. Solidified/stabilized and 90-day cured mine tailings specimens made with composite binders containing (10% CKD + 10% FAC), (5% SRC + 15% FAC) and (5% SRC + 5% CKD + 10% FAC) significantly impaired the solubility of all contaminants investigated and proved successful in fixing metals within the matrix, in addition to achieving adequate unconfined compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity values, thus satisfying U.S. EPA regulations. Laboratory investigations revealed that, for polymetallic mining waste, leachate concentrations are the most critical factor in assessing the effectiveness of S/S technology.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries – Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

Underground mining of coal by longwall mining methods has not been a predominant technique in Ohio. To date, only five mines in the state utilize this method, however, the technique has sparked a certain amount of controversy. As a mining technique, longwalling was introduced into southeastern Ohio in the early 1970's but it did not attract public attention until the mines began moving into privately held surface lands. This occurred coincidentally at about the same time that the state of Ohio began to regulate the environmental impacts of underground mining. Prior to the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in 1977, (SMCRA), Ohio's reclamation law, Chapter 1513 Ohio Revised Code (O.R.C. 1513) did not regulate underground coal mines. As a result of SMCRA, the Ohio Statute was amended in 1978, to include regulation of the surface effects of subsidence. The inevitable result was that existing mines were immediately subject to regulations that were not considered during the initial mine planning process. (For an excellent survey of Ohio Laws that deal with coal mine subsidence, see Zima, 1985. ) The problem faced at that time by both the coal industry and the Ohio Division of Reclamation (the agency within ODNR charged with implementing O.R.C. Ch. 1513.1, was that of attempting to superimpose permitting requirements, and design performance standards onto mines that' had been operational for a number of years.

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.

When activated carbon is used for recovering gold in gold industry, carbon fine materials are generated in stripping, acid-washing and kiln regeneration circuits. The carbon fines at the Fort Knox mine, Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc., contain up to 0.68 kg/t (20 oz/st) of gold. In laboratory tests, gold in the carbon fines was effectively transferred to coarse virgin carbon when the carbon fines were mixed with virgin carbon in cyanide solution at a cyanide concentration higher than 0.10%. A plant-scale test conducted at the Fort Knox mine also shows effective gold transfer from the carbon fines to virgin carbon with a 95% gold recovery in a two-stage gold transfer process.
