Kaolin of the Georgia-south Carolina "Clay Belt" are used in a wide variety of filler and extender applications. Sane applications specifically require the performance enhancement delivered by incorporating kaolin into the product formulations. Other applications are less specific in requirements for an inert mineral filler. In order to be a feasible candidate for filling and extending, a mineral or mineral product must be generally inert (except where specific interaction with the filled medium is desired), inexpensive, easily handled and transported in a variety of forms, accessible to a broad segment of the desired market, and must exist in sufficiently large ore reserves as to assure production for many years. Of course, more precise requirements are necessary in specific applications of a prospective filler material.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. "The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. Malthus, an eighteenth century economist, predicted a rather dismal future for the world. It was his contention food supplies would not be sufficient for the population of the world because the economy of a nation grew arithmetically while population increased geometrically. As a consequence, within a relatively few years mass famine would spread throughout the world. This prophecy, based on an agrarian economic situation, did not come true at least insofar as the Western World was concerned. In largo measure, the salvation of our part of the earth resulted from the growth engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Throughout much of today's world, however, the Malthusian theory seems to be coming true. The advantages and benefits of the Industrial Revolution have net reached all nations. Further, the situation has been compounded by the benefits of modern medicine. This has reduced child mortality and extended life expectancy, but placed no limitations on births in the developed countries, child mortality has declined to 2 percent and adult life expectancy has doubled, but education and general prosperity have resulted in voluntary limitations on pregnancies thus partly offsetting the increased chance of survivals Even so, the present rate of population increase in Europe is approximately 6 percent per decade, and somewhat higher in the U.S., Japan, and other developed countries. The world as a whole, however, is expected to double its population by the year 2000, This would imply a rate of increase in the less developed countries approximately four times that in Europe.

In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.

The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit test- work combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel, at times could increase production rates by as much as 10 percent over that achieved by grinding operators, (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2 percent or more to be statistically significant and (3) for a 2 percent increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in a computer installation, Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented control computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long term objectives. The short term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2 percent have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long term objectives are (1) off line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units, (2) on line experiments to study alternative contol tactics, and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. Centralized automatic control was built into the original and expanded facilities to the greatest extent possible, considering the state of the art at that time. Installation of additional control

Crushing and grinding activity in 1989 followed the rapid pace of the mineral industry. Use of existing installations, demand for expanded capacity, and implementation of entirely new operations contributed to a high level of activity. At the 1989 SME-AIME Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, the crushing and grinding session focused on wear materials in crushers and mills. Another session joined the process control group in its simulation-modeling and control of crushing and grinding circuits. Both sessions addressed the optimization in operating effectiveness. Specific subjects covered grinding media wear of forged and cast grinding balls and rubber lined mill liner wear. Also, the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill Conference in Vancouver in September 1989 provided a valuable update on the progress of SAG operations in recent years. Operationally, gold grinding and roasting circuits were implemented in 1989. Freeport McMoRan Gold started up two operations in Nevada. Two other circuits, both using SAG mills, are scheduled to start in 1990. These will be in Nevada and British Columbia. Elsewhere in gold, additional capacity continues to be brought onstream, both domestically and worldwide. In copper, expansions continue to call on additional crushing and grinding units. The unrest at Bougainville in Papua New Guinea has fueled a continued, strong demand for comminution in the copper sector. Specific equipment installed or started in 1989 included the ac variable frequency drive SAG mills in Australia, Alaska, and Papua New Guinea. Also, the gearless drive SAG mill in Chile provides tremendous flexibility in terms of mill speed. The trend toward moveable in-pit crushers continues -even at established operations.

The barite industry shares with its associates in the minerals industry the impediments of excessive federal and state regulations. We have learned to exist with the Organic Act of 1976, the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1966, and the Multiple Use Act of 1955. I do not mean to imply by the above that all aspects of mining legislation have been detrimental, however, each of you has been subjected to interpretative restrictions by federal or state bureaucrats. As frustrating and costly as this is to the barite industry, it is not the primary problem facing our segment of the industry at the present time. Our major difficulty today deals not with too much government regulation, but with the lack of a cohesive and consistent government energy program. This administration and those that have preceded it have dealt with intermittent energy crises on an emergency basis. If we remove the political rhetoric which has surrounded each of the more recent major crises, we can liken the action of our federal government to that of a rural volunteer fire department which devotes its entire efforts toward extinguishing existing fires rather than the developing of programs designed to prevent future fires. The lack of a comprehensive energy program has created an environment in which long range planning is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The Post deposit is located in Eureka County, Nevada, about 37 km (23 miles) northwest of the town of Carlin. Post occurs on the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of 14 major gold deposits, each containing more than three tonnes (t) (100 000 ounces) of gold. Deposits of the Carlin Trend are epithermal, sediment-hosted, disseminated gold occurrences, collectively containing more than 622 t (20 million ounces) of gold. Three major gold producers active on the Carlin Trend are Newmont Gold Company (NGC) (12.4 t/400 000 ounces of gold per year), Western States Minerals Corporation (WSMC) and Pancana Minerals joint venture (1.56 t/50 000 ounces of gold per year), and Dee Gold Mining Company (1.4 t/45 000 ounces of gold per year). The Carlin Trend has also been referred to as the Lynn-Railroad Mineral Belt. This district is characterized by open-pit mineable, micron-sized gold, hosted in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Six geological subdistricts comprise the Carlin Trend, each characterized by differences in host lithology, structural controls, alteration assemblage, or style of mineralization. The six geologic subdistricts include, from south to north, Bullion (Railroad), Rain, Maggie Creek, Lynn, Bluestar-Goldstrike, and Bootstrap. With the exception of the Bullion subdistrict, which was primarily a producer of base metals, each sub-district contained mineable reserves in excess of 31 t (one million ounces) of gold.

Using a combined fire assay-atomic absorption method, gold determinations with a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb were made on 345 samples of Early Precambrian felsic plutonic rocks collected 2 2 from intrusions ranging in size from 4 km to 88 km and in composition from syenite to granodiorite. Gold levels in unmineralized stocks are consistently below the 5 ppb detection limit of the analytical method used. In contrast, analyses of samples from stocks containing gold mines within their borders and in nearby metavolcanic-metasedimentary host rocks show a strongly skewed trace element gold population with a substantial percentage of gold values exceeding 5 ppb and ranging as high as 320 ppb. The data indicate that (1) ore-stage hydrothermal metasomatism has produced widespread Au enrichment in Precambrian intrusions that host epigenetic vein-type gold deposits, and (2) geochemical Au analysis of samples collected from 30 to 50 randomly distributed sites can be used to estimate the gold exploration potential of stock-sized bodies and to outline internal patterns of Au variation which may be useful in directing exploration to particular contacts or portions of a stock. The results do not conclusively indicate unusually high Au content in primary unaltered igneous rocks.

Over the past few years, the use of fully grouted bolts to support the roof of underground openings has increased dramatically. While conventionally anchored bolts effectively reinforce the strata of over 80 percent of mine workings, the use of resin grouted bolts in areas of severe roof conditions has resulted in a substantial reduction in roof falls and an overall improvement in both safety and production. The Roof Control Group of Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to isolate parameters which contribute to the effectiveness of both conventional and resin bolting systems. Specially developed strain-gamed resin bolts, compression pads and differential sag stations installed during the mining cycle have generated data reflecting the loading characteristics and resulting roof stability associated with each type of support. Additional investigations have produced optimum installation parameters of the two systems including the effectiveness of thrust/torque controls for conventional bolts and various bolt/ hole diameter combinations for fully grouted rods. Theoretical analyses, coupled with the actual field and laboratory findings and numerous installation observations have facilitated basic comparisons of the working mechanisms and failure modes of both resin and conventional systems.

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. The Felder ore deposit is a 5,000,000-pound uranium deposit in the South Texas Coastal Plain. It occurs in the basal sand of an Oakville Formation (Miocene) alluvial system. The host sand is a carbonate-rich arkose which contains virtually no carbonaceous debris and has been reduced by the local introduction of hydrogen sulfide. The ore lies well within the reduced zone and occurs as coffinite and uraninite that fill interstices and coat and replace grains. The overall geometric configuration of the ore is that of a winged, crescentic ore roll. Weak mineralization extends the wings of the ore roll and gives greater expression to the roll character. Departures from the shape are controlled by discontinuities in bed- ding and by proximity of the ore to the surface. Associated with the uranium is a broad halo of anomalous molybdenum. Subsidiary mineralized trends suggest a pre-existing up-dip position for the main roll. Oxidation from the surface largely destroyed this previous roll by solubilization of uranium. Uranium subsequently migrated into favorably reduced sand and reprecipitated at the present roll position.

INTRODUCTION A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environ- mental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The environmental measure that reflects physiological strain is the link between the three elements and, since the turn of the century, the discussion of the merits of various indices has been prolific. One problem in selecting a suitable measure or index is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to accurately reflecting the physiological strain. For example, wet bulb temperature is simple to measure and, for a particular mining sys- tem, it may adequately represent physiological strain, however, it would not necessarily provide the same relatively safe measure in a different mining system. The acceptance of a measure which can be universally applied has been confounded by both development and predisposition. That is not to say that there is only one "correct" measure and all others are unsuitable. It is self evident that if the application of a particular index has resulted in adequate control, then that mea- sure is correct for that situation. However, an understanding of the limitations is necessary to ensure that adequate control is maintained as mining conditions change. Almost 100 years after the question of heat stress in mines started to be dealt with in a collective manner, an analysis of the available information is leading towards a general strategy to control this problem. In the paper, the developments in heat stress assessment are briefly examined and followed since the earliest published observations on the effect of heat in mines (Haldane, 1905), efforts to determine a relationship between an environmental measure and human performance are reviewed and summarised and the benefits of control strategies such as acclimatisation and shortened shifts are discussed as they relate to Mount Isa Mines. The results of testing the prototype air cooling power instrument are discussed and a heat stress control strategy outlined. HEAT STRESS AND AIR COOLING POWER The operation of the human engine is analogous to other engines where the conversion of chemical energy from the oxidation of fuel to useful mechanical energy is not 100% efficient. In a diesel engine it is about 33% and in a human engine less than 20% resulting in at least five times as much heat produced by the meta- bolic process as useful work done. Metabolic energy production is related to the rate at which oxygen is consumed and is about 340 W for each litre of oxygen per minute. Using measured oxygen consumption and an average body surface area of 2.0 m2, the approximate metabolic energy production associated with different mining tasks is (Morrison et al. 1968):- • Rest, 50 W/m2 • Light work, 75 to 125 W/m2 (machine, LHD or drill jumbo operators) • Medium work, 125 to 175 W/m2 (airleg drilling, light construction work) • Hard work, 175 to 275 W/m2 (barring down, building bulkheads and timbering) • Very hard work, over 275 W/m2 (shovelling rock) Heat balance is achieved when the rate of producing heat (the metabolic heat production rate) is equal to the rate at which the body can reject heat mainly through radiation, convection and evaporation. Heat exchange between the lungs and the air in- haled and exhaled is normally less than 5% of the total and there- fore usually ignored. Any heat not rejected to the surroundings will cause an increase in body core temperature. Since heat stress is related to the balance between the body and the surrounding thermal environment, the main parameters required to be known when determining acceptable conditions are those associated with the heat production and transfer mechanisms. These can be summarised as follows: Metabolic heat production rates (M - W) Skin surface area (A3) (and effects of clothing) Dry bulb temperature (t[ ]) Radiant temperature (t[ ]) Air velocity (V) Air pressure (P) Air vapour pressure (e [ ]) The rate of heat transfer to or from the environment depends on the equilibrium skin temperature t, and the sweat rate S,. These in turn depend on the response of the body to the imposed heat stress and the effect of thermoregulation (Stewart, 1981). Thermoregulation The body contains temperature sensitive structures which send impulses to the brain at a rate depending on the temperature. The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

The Republic of South Africa is an outstanding example of the benefits to a new land by the application of individual enterprise, capital and know-how. While South Africa was colonized by European and Bantu people some 300 years ago, it was only 70 to 80 years agog when diamonds were discovered at Kimberley and gold on the Witswatersrand, that the mining, industrial and commercial potential of the country began to emerge. South Africa s national income rose from R1, 200 million in 1945 to over R4 billion in 1960 (1R = 10 shillings = $1.40 U. S.) The annual national income per head of population -- including all races -- is currently R254 (£127) This compares with £24 for India., £30 for Nigeria, and £50 for Ghana. Allowing for the increase in population, the increase in real income per head of population was about 40% during the past 15 years.

Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.
