Perlite is an altered rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 wt % water that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam to form lightweight, glass foam. Commercial perlite deposits in New Mexico are well-developed zones of chemical weathering (hydration) superimposed on highly permeable and thick glassy zones at the chilled upper surface and toes of high-silica-rhyolite lava flows and lava domes. The maximum tonnage of glass in these volcanoes was predetermined by their unique eruptive histories. New Mexico perlite production (80% of US production of 571,00 st) is mostly from the 3.9 Ma high-silica-rhyolite lava flows at the No Agua Peaks volcanic center. The primary vent at No Agua is defined by a 900 ft-high rubidium-rich composite lava dome, known as West Peak, that contains minor perlite reserves. Slightly less rubidium-rich lava squeezed out from under the west flank of the dome to form relatively thin (250 ft) but highly vesicular lobate flows that now consist of about 50 % recoverable perlite. Finally, rubidium-poor lavas were extruded from a radial dike on the northeast flank of the dome. These thicker (400 ft) flow lobes contain about 20 % recoverable perlite. The largest mass of lava does not always contain the most perlite. The thinner (west) flow at No Agua yields the largest perlite reserves rather than the large composite lava dome or thicker (east) flow.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies, and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing, and evaluating administrative controls, and a list of administrative controls, are reported.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

One of the critical parameters of any automated coal mining system is the ability to only cut coal and not the rock / waste surrounding it. To do this the system must be able to detect where the coal-rock/ waste interface is. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a new approach to vibrational coal interface detection (CID) by utilizing an adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) system to perform feature extraction and classification of complex vibrational signals. Accelerometers, geophones, and piezoelectric films are mounted on mining machines and/or strata and are used to monitor vibrations produced during mining operations. Selected data are digitized and the ASD system is trained on known types of vibrations (e.g., "cutting coal" and "starting to cut roof"). A signal classifier is then generated which can be used to identify unknown waveforms. The ASD system can be retrained if mining conditions change significantly.

The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

The lower Middle Cambrian phosphorite deposits of the Georgina Basin shown in Figure 1 were found in the period 1966-1968 by three companies, namely, International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Continental Oil Corporation and Broken Hill South Limited. Of these deposits the significant ones are Duchess, Sherrin Creek, D Tree, Lady Annie, Lady Jane, and Wonarah which together aggregate several billion tons reserves of phosphate. Due to the economic factors of freight costs to the coast and softening of the world market price for rock phosphate, none of them is in production, nor is any in the development stage. This paper reviews the historical background to the discovery of these deposits and then deals principally with the discovery of non-outcropping phosphorites in the Barkly Tablelands of Northern Territory by the interpretation of gamma radiation logs of abandoned water bores.

A safe and precise mineral separation alternative to heavy liquids is being used for mineral sands exploration on large scale orebodies. The separation process, Magstream®, uses ferro-fluids and magnetic and centrifugal forces to produce precise split points over a range of specific gravities from 1.5 to 18.0 g/cc. This paper describes a commercial scale exploration program treating, roughly, 90 samples per day in Senegal (West Africa). Separation results comparing Magstream® and conventional heavy-liquid separation are presented.

Technologic advances in materials utilization during the past two decades have brought is a long way toward the point where we can make the products we need from the materials we have readily available. Notable examples are the synthesis of diamond, zeolites, quartz crystal, mullite, and mica, and the development of phosphate bonded tale. Two of these--zeolites and mullite--involve the use of clays. There is little reason to doubt that equally important advances will be realized in the next decade, and that clays will play an important role in the developing materials technology. Indeed, the stage is already set for many of them. This discussion is concerned primarily with the high quality, relatively high priced clays, kaolin, bentonite, fuller's earth and ball clay. The first three have enjoyed demand growth rates over the past two decades which on the average exceeded the growth rate for the economy as a whole. There are indications that demand for ball clay will be growing at a faster rate in the future.

This paper presents the challenges of the Homestead Avenue Interceptor Extension (HAIE) project in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. The new 72-inch (1,830 mm) sewer pipeline project consists of installing approximately 3,010 linear feet (920 m) of PVC lined reinforced concrete pipe using pressurized face microtunneling. The entire alignment is located within soft to very soft, varved silt and clay. To the extent possible, the alignment was selected to avoid bedrock, glacial till, miscellaneous fill,buried steel piles, and utilities. Challenges for this project include low ground cover, crossing major transportation routes, and limiting settlement to prevent damage to historical buildings and critical utilities. The machine was selected for the ground conditions. Design calculations were performed for selecting the reinforced concrete pipe class and for evaluating settlement. The potential for settlement damage was evaluated using both conventional analysis and finite element analysis

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

During 1982 and 1983, it became increasingly clear that North River No. 1 Mine would have to buy a set of replacement longwall shields. Despite extensive efforts to make improvements, the shields that were in place at that time were incapable of holding the roof. North River Energy had limited experience in specifying and acquiring longwall roof supports, but a great deal of experience with our conditions and needs. We there- fore compiled a shield evaluation method that uniquely responded to our situation. The resulting system emphasized teamwork among operating, maintenance and engineering personnel. The charge from management was threefold: select shields to support maximum expected loads, optimize face operations, and pay attention to detail. Final selection was made objectively, based on all available information. We chose a 5516 KN (620 tons) support with a minimum yield load density of 760 KN/m2 (7.9 tons/ft2). This paper reviews our process of specification, design, prototype testing, and fabrication, and offers some relevant suggestions.

Background ground water quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters affected by mining activities. In the past these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contributions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals, and radionuclides, and were submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to modify the extent of a Corrective Action Program and to establish control limits for future monitoring.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. Five kaolin crudes from the state of Georgia in the U.S. were investigated for processability with chemically enhanced magnetic separation (CEMS) technologies developed by Cytec. The technologies used magnetic reagent alone or in conjunction with specialty chemicals to selectively agglomerate and magnetize the desired minerals (impurities) to be removed by the conventional magnetic separation equipment. All crudes indicated treatability using CEMS. Results indicated that CEMS technology could be applied to different kaolin crudes to obtain a product with titanium impurities less than 0.6% TiO2 from individual crudes. The features and benefits of the technologies were also reviewed.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

Modified contact grouting was introduced almost 15 years ago as a methodology combining traditional contact grouting and consolidation grouting to address groundwater infiltration into hard rock tunnels that utilize cast-in-place concrete as permanent tunnel support. This process has been used on additional tunnels (since initially presented) as a measure to mitigate both groundwater infiltration and exfiltration. During this time, self-sealing grouts have been developed and have been added to the process to further reduce groundwater infiltration that occurs through cracks and discontinuities within the concrete liner itself. This modification is presented and additional results from the grouting process are discussed.
