After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. 10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

Carajás is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. The mine is comprised by a haul road network more than 100 km long, where the need for good roads is paramount and determining of the truck performances. This work integrates, regarding the ultimate pit design, an approach to consider an economic value to an originally unfit material, assuming it has the appropriate characteristics for haul road construction, which sometimes lies over economic iron ore. This measure demonstrated an improvement in the utilization of resources and guarantee the necessary material to the haul road design and Mining Pads maintenance.

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

"Over recent years, specifically following the MINER Act of 2006, an increasing number of manufacturers of underground mine seals in the United States have begun using a form of pumpable cement or shotcrete to create barriers separating the working and abandoned sections of underground coal mines. This seal material, while generally considered to be homogenous and solid, contains a network of microcracks, voids, and delaminations. Generally, it has been assumed that methane (CF4) leakage around these seals is a result of movement around the boundary interface between the seal and surrounding strata. Using a perfluorinated tracer compound, perfluoromethyl-cyclohexane (PMCH), the movement of gases can be monitored through seal material to observe how gases move though the material, both intact and with faulting in the material. This paper documents two large experiments where the movement of PMCH was monitored in the field, along with modeling confirmation using 3D visualization software. INTRODUCTION According to a report in 2007, there were over 14,000 active mine seals in underground U.S. coal mines alone (Zipf, Sapko, & Brune, 2007). These seals are used for both ventilation and safety purposes, to direct the flow of air away from the abandoned area of the mine and to help eliminate the propagation of explosions that can occur on the outby side of the mine seal. The atmosphere on the outby side of these seals typical consists of low levels of methane that have the potential of producing leakage along the face of the seal on the inby side. Methane leakage around mine seals has historically been attributed to the permeability between the seal and mine interface (McPherson, 1993). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) between 2003 and 2012 an average of 17 deaths occurred annually in underground bituminous coals mines. The only time during the ten-year period where the fatalities were higher than the average was in 2006 and 2010, years which had three major explosions occurring in underground coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. Two of the explosions were propagated through the mine by seal failure or methane leakage around newly poured seals (Light, et al., 2007) (Gates, et al., 2006). These recent events, and new regulations regarding seal strength (MINER Act), have created a need to monitor the condition of underground mine seals. BACKGROUND Measuring the permeability of solid materials, such as concrete or seal materials, can be a valuable tool in the field of non-destructible testing (NDT). By using an inert gas, such as nitrogen, injecting the gas into a solid structure, and measuring the resultant flow rate and pressure differential, this can provide valuable information about the structure. Studies have shown permeability can be affected by the stresses applied to the structure, as well as temperature and moisture (Choinska, Khelidj, Chatzigeorgious, & Pijaudier-Cabot, 2007) (Abbas, Carcasses, & Olliver, 1999)."

In 1992, 48 million tons of fly ash (not including bottom ash, boiler slag and FGD material) was produced in the United States, according to the American Coal Ash Association. Of this amount, 27.2% was utilized; although the percentage of fly ash utilized increased from 20% in 1980, there is significant potential to increase utilization. One of the primary driving forces behind increased utilization is increased disposal costs due to more stringent environmental controls and regulation. Fly ash is classified as a natural pozzolan and finds significant use as a cement additive. It has been found to increase the plasticity of the cement mixture while lowering the amount of mix water needed. In addition to improving leveling and finishing properties, fly ash improves pumpability as well as decreases the heat of hydration of the concrete mix which is particularly important in massive concrete structures such as dams where the concrete needs to cool as quickly as possible. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) of fly ash is an important quality when considering utilization. The LOI is primarily due to the presence of unburned carbon and the standard specifications for the use of fly ash as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete are given in ASTM C618-89a. which sets an LOI limit of 6%. However, many states have set a more stringent limit of 3%. The primary reason for the lower LOI specification is that carbon adsorbs air entraining agents which limits freeze-thaw resistance. This is particularly important in climates such as the midwestern US where multiple cycles of freezing and thawing are typical in winter.

INTRODUCTION Hydraulic concentrators utilize the physical characteristics-size, shape, and specific gravity-of particles suspended in a fluid medium to effect a concentration of desired quality. Fine-coal concentrators include generally those devices which are used to clean roughly 3/4, in. (9.5 mm) top-size coals. While this size designation is somewhat arbitrary, it is consistent with current practice although some fine- coal concentrators can treat coarser coals effectively. A variety of devices have been and are currently being used to wash fine coals and include: dense media cyclones, wet concentrating tables, hydrocyclones, jigs, spirals, launders, and upward-current classifiers. As launders and upward-current classifiers have been replaced by more efficient devices, they no longer warrant consideration as fine-coal washers. And as fine-coal jigs were addressed with the Baum jig under Part 1, Section 2, and heavy media cyclones and hydrocyclones were addressed under Part 2, Section 1, of this Chapter, only the wet concentrating table and the spiral concentrator will be discussed here. WET CONCENTRATING TABLES History The current wet concentrating table evolved from continuous belt concentrators which utilized a flowing film of water to recover heavy metals. In these devices the heavier concentrate moved up the inclined plane of the belt while the lighter impurities were washed away by water flowing down the belt. The natural outgrowth of the continuous belt concentrator was the vanner, a vibrating endless belt which was first developed about 1860 by Hartwig. Later models of the vanner, such as the Frue, incorporated oscillation in a plane transverse to the direction of the water current. Excellent descriptions of these washers are found in The Cleaning of Coal, by Chapman and Mott.80 Further development of tables included the circular stationary table (Linkenbach), the multiple round table (Anaconda-Evans), the bumping table (Campbell), and finally the differential-motion table which is now used extensively for cleaning fine coals.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing, so much so that it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico from a regulatory perspective. This paper is intended to give a general overview of the system of environmental regulation in Mexico. The actual application of Mexican laws and regulations governing the environment to a specific operation will require a much more detailed review of the applicable environmental standards.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Byproduct ore recovered from copper- and titanium-mining operations accounted for less than 1% of total iron ore production. Fifteen mines operated by nine companies accounted for 94% of total

As in every business venture, the primary objective of a mining operation is to make money for those who supply the venture capital. Therefore, all decisions concerning the operation of the mining operation should be made in light of the resulting effect on profit. The ultimate control is on profit, but the process is controlled, for example, by aiming for a recovery or concentrate grade knowing its effect on profit. The normal procedure used to determi.ne the profitability of a venture is to "present worth" all costs and incomes back to some arbitrary year zero. Every company has formed a management decision as to what it will require as a minimum return before it will undertake an investment. Once the economic analysis is completed, investment will be made only if the venture shows a positive present worth. If two alternatives are available, the alternative with the larger positive present worth is the one chosen. The same principles can be applied to the selection of a production schedule.

"There’s a bit of confusion and misinformation in the tunneling and underground construction industry regarding contractor joint ventures. If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the silica collection efficiency of flooded-bed scrubbers with six different filter panel designs and at two operating velocities. Test results indicated that reductions in filter density negatively impacted respirable dust collection. Silica collection efficiency for the least dense filter was as much as 33 % lower than the collection efficiency of the densest filter. At the low operating velocity, the least dense filter allowed over 40% of the respirable silica dust in the scrubber intake air to pass through the unit, where it would be discharged back into the mine environment. Operation of the scrubber at the higher test air velocity increased silica collection efficiency, regardless of the filter panel tested. The density of the filter panels also impacted the quantity of air that is moved through the scrubber, with higher density filters reducing scrubber airflow. For each filter, the relationship between dust collection efficiency and air moving capacity must be considered to determine overall effectiveness for specific mine applications.

My subject Is Industrial Relations. Thus, I may appear as an intruder at this annual meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers. But I am no more an intruder here than is Industrial Relations in the day-to-day functioning of an engineer either in a staff or a line job. Engineers deal with people, as well as with blueprints, organizational charts, production data, etc. Where you have people, you have emotions, gripes, wants - real or imagined. Or you may just need some people or, at the other end of the pole, you may want to free yourself of people. But whether it is the wants or the needs, the pleasant or the unpleasant aspects of dealing with people, an Industrial Relations Department within an organization is there to help with these human relationships. This is the point for a definition of terns. Reference has just been made to "dealing with people? and to "human relations." This is, precisely the area in which Industrial Relations operates in the western Mining Divisions of Kennecott. In other organizations, what we refer to as Industrial Relations, may be called personnel relations, personnel administration, employee relations, or labor management relations. In our opinion the term Industrial Relations is best descriptive of the activity because it embraces the broad field of human behavior, reactions and satisfactions growing out of an individual?s entire employment relationship including his hiring, his lifetime on the job, and his termination. This is an individual?s industrial life. However, despite the use of the word "industrial", we are ever conscious that Industrial Relations is limited to human relations. The Industrial Relations interest in these line organizations activities and decisions relates only to the impact they nay have on employees - on people generally within the organization.

Exploration requires processing highly varying kinds and amounts of geologic information. Successful discovery dictates that this be done quickly with maximum confidence. Most phases of exploration are more or less applicable to computer reduction on a routine basis. The use of digital computers to reduce raw data into interpretable form, lets the exploration geophysicist concentrate on interpretation and presentation, and to consistently apply more sophisticated and comprehensive analytical techniques, not practical before. In applying these concepts for the past several years, various efficient programs have evolved which provide more complete evaluation of all data including the pro- vision for more unique solutions. This has resulted in greater refinement and ability to select the most advantageous drill sites in a minimum time at a minimum cost or, in rejecting as soon as possible a project on which additional effort is no longer justified. Practical examples of computer applications in magnetics (air and ground), induced polarization and resistivity are discussed.

Modern surface mining operations are always seeking for minimizing costs while increasing production rates, among the optimization of other specific tasks that have an impact on the economics of the mine. Specifically, the cost related to the production fleet operation (shovels and trucks), the maximization of the overall performance of the equipment, and the uncertainty to meet the goals at the end of the operational time horizon are always topics of discussion with no apparent simple answer. On the other hand, truck-shovel dispatch systems based on Linear/Non-Linear Programming Algorithms have been in operation since mid-1990’s with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine, but having in most cases some important shortcomings related to the way these systems deal with the decision making of the operational objectives, being necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. This paper discusses the implementation of a novel methodology based on AI techniques to assist in the decision making of the best goal selection when operating a Fleet Management System, taking into consideration time periods as variables and integrating them as part of the analysis, providing a better overview of the forecast plan completion with respect to previous production numbers and evaluating best alternative to handle future events to minimize losses or maximize profits, resulting in better truck assignments, minimum shovel idle times and overall productivity improvements of the operation at the end of the time horizon.

Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

The city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany is located at a main transit road to Tyrol in Austria and suffers of a very heavy traffic load. Therefore, the Kramertunnel as a by-pass tunnel is built to release/mitigate the traffic through the city centre. The 3,600 m long single tube road tunnel is designed with a parallel but smaller emergency tunnel and with cross passages, fitted with single- and doublesided emergency bays, a vent shaft, and an intermediate ceiling to separate fresh air supply from the road traffic. The tunnel, concrete lined along its entire length provided the challenge to find smart formwork solutions for quick set-up, repositioning, setup and pouring. Three particularly specific sections are discussed in this paper.

The rising costs for and the possibility for limited availability of electrical energy are emphasizing the continual conflict faced in the selection of comminution circuits used in preparing ores for concentration, namely; capital cost vs. operating cost. Frequently, the circuit with the lowest capital cost is not the most efficient in the use of electrical power and wear resistant materials. The simplest circuit in terms of flow, pieces of equipment and capital cost is the single stage autogenous or partial autogenous circuit used to grinding primary crusher discharge or run of mine ore to the desired product size. (Fig. 1) From this circuit, complexity increases to multi-stage crushing circuits preparing feed for multi-stage grinding circuits. Fig. 2 showing a three stage rod mill ball mill arrangement is an example of a complex grinding circuit. Stage concentration further complicates the flow. Multi-stage circuits being the most expensive to install, often give the greatest operating flexibility and offer the best possibilities for the most efficient use of available power and wear resistant materials. Within available grinding circuits, other comparisons such as high speed vs. low speed mills, grate discharge vs. overflow discharge, metal liners vs. rubber liners, high charge vs. low charge, etc. all add to the conflict
