Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

While silica ores are generally considered to have little value, those with exceptionally low B and P content have, potentially, significant worth if processed for use in photovoltaics. The sales value of a cubic meter of ?run of the mill? silica sand is $42 per cubic meter (retail and delivered). If the silica sand can be used to produce solar silicon, its value after processing is $34,000 per cubic meter. Factors that impact the suitability of silica for direct processing in production of photovoltaics are examined.

A crucial step in the acquisition by one company of the assets of another, the acquisition of the stock of another company, or the merger of two com-ponies, is the legal due diligence which needs to be performed in order for the acquirer to ascertain or confirm the obligations, liabilities and exposures to risk that are being assumed along with the assets or corporate stock being acquired. Where the obligations, liabilities, or exposures to risk arise from existing contracts, or from pending lawsuits, administrative proceedings, or threats of these actions, those matters are relatively straightforward to discover by careful review of the files of the party whose assets or stock is being acquired. However, where a company is engaged in ongoing mining or processing operations and has operated or owned mining proper-. ties, there are many sources of liability and exposure to risk which could have major adverse economic consequences to the acquiring party and which are not revealed, or at least are not clearly delineated, by the records of the company whose stock or assets are being acquired.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

The kinetics of atmospheric sulfuric acid leaching from a Brazilian nickel laterite ore was assessed using distinct reducing agents and ore mineralogy. This transitional ore contains 1.63% Ni distributed as 1.27% in coarse size (− 500 + 150 μm), mainly as silicates (lizardite and chlorite—28.6%), and 2.06%in the fines fraction (− 75 μm), mainly as iron oxy-hydroxides (goethite and hematite—49%). The effects of temperature, acid concentration, reducing reagent type, and concentration were evaluated. The − 75 μm fraction limited the leaching efficiency and the use of reducing media with thiosulfate improved leaching and Ni-Fe selectivity. However, at constant Eh of 626–743 mV and a pH range between 0.2 and 1.1, no substantial rise in metals extraction, except for Co and Mn, has been observed. In order to determine the process control at 95 °C, two regions in the extraction curves were used in combination with the shrinking core model. Control by porous diffusion was observed and the kinetic constant was found to be in the order kFe<kNi<kMn<kCo<kMg for atmospheric leaching without Eh control. In reducing media for the first 15 min of leaching, the kinetic constant was found to be kFe<kNi<kMg≅kCo<kMn as derived from Ni disseminated into iron oxides structures.

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

It is estimated that the volume of low -level and intermediate level contaminants present in the soil at different DOE sites is of the order of several million cubic feet. The existing remediation scheme is containerization followed by burial in Land Disposal Facilities (LDF&apos;s) which is economically unattractive warranting the need to develop alternate remediation routes. One such route is the physical separation based volume reduction approach to removing a MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CLEAN SOIL with the radioactive particles, reducing the amount of material that requires disposal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using physical beneficiation techniques for removal of contaminants from soil. The performance criterion was to recover at least 80% of the activity in 20% or less of the original contaminated soil volume. Four different radioactively contaminated (primarily uranium and plutonium) soils from DoE sites namely LANL, INEL, Fernald Plant 1 Storage Pad (ID-B) and Mound soils were tested using gravity, magnetic, gravo-magnetic, hydrocyclonic and flotation devices. The paper is divided into the two sections. The first section presents the overview of the Heavy Metals in Contaminated Soil Treatability Project conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) describing the salient features of a state-of-the art Soil Washing Laboratory and the technology equipments used in the test program. The second section describes the soil characterization and typical volume reduction results obtained from the UNR tests. Among the physical separation processes, only flotation processes passed the performance criterion. For the LANL and INEL soils where the contamination was contained in coarse particle size, it was possible to recover more than 80% of the activity in less than 10-20% of the original volume of the soil thus rendering 80-90% of the soil "clean". For Fernald and Mound soils where contamination was of colloidal nature, flotation based processes showed encouraging results and are recommended for further studies.

Despite the seeming benefits decoupling pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals present in practice, little success has been achieved. The present study presents possible process routes for attaining selective flotation broadly capitalizing on differential oxidation between these minerals, and the use of a chelating collectors. The best performance was achieved with dithionocarbamate application following copper activation, yielding 81.4% arsenopyrite and 37% pyrite recovery. Preaeration followed by staged addition of xanthate produced 76% arsenopyrite and 31% pyrite recovery while reverse flotation of pyrite after H2O2 addition gave rise to rejection of 66% pyrite accompanied with 24% arsenopyrite.

The depth at which it becomes more economical to use slope access as opposed to box-cut access for near-surface coal reserves, termed "transition depth," can be established for a given coal property by considering cost estimates for those parameters that determine respective access method. Fourteen parameters that influence access cost were identified and ranges determined. A Transition Depth Formula was developed to permit determination of the better method of accessing a reserve, given such information as highwall slope, road width, total bench width, pit dimensions, road grade, belt component costs, pumping costs, and cost of overburden removal and reclamation. In most cases, in Appalachia, studies indicate that the transition depth ranges between 20 and 30 m.

Reliable ore reserve estimates for deposits with highly skewed grade disributions are difficult tasks to perform. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle problems with these estimations, ordinary kriging or conventional interpolation methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. The estimation results can be very sensitive to the search parameters used during the interpolation of grades with these methods. This paper compares the ore reserve estimates from ordinary kriging using several cases in which certain search parameters are varied. The comparisons are extended to different mineralizations to show the changing effects of these parameters.

"Mineworkers are routinely tasked with making critically important decisions about whether or not a hazard presents an imminent danger. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health collected formative data to investigate mine safety professional perspectives on workplace examinations, which revealed a potential gap in how mineworkers are assessing risk. During interviews, participants revealed not having a systematic methodology for mineworkers to use to determine if a hazard is considered imminent danger. In this paper, we identify and describe three distinct categories of imminent danger complexity and discuss potential steps that could lead to improved identification of imminent danger situations. Finally, we identify potential practices to incorporate into risk management efforts, including feedback, communication and specialized training, to increase awareness of imminent danger situations. IntroductionIn recent years, the metal and nonmetal mining sector, as categorized by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), experienced an increase in the number of fatalities occurring at mine sites. From 2013 to 2015, 69 mineworkers were fatally injured, twice the number of fatalities in each of the previous two years (MSHA, 2015a). As a way to address this increase, MSHA issued its P15- IV-01 program policy letter, suggesting that “miners would benefit from rigorous workplace examinations conducted by experienced and trained examiners” (MSHA, 2015b). The goal of these examinations is to find hazards in the field and mitigate them before they cause injury or death to mineworkers. While it is important to identify all hazards in the workplace, it is critically important to identify those hazards that are considered imminent danger because they require an immediate response to avoid a severe or even fatal injury."

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxylamine (N-BPHA) has been investigated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable in the pH range from 2 to 4 at N-BPHA concentration between 2x10-3 M and 2x10-2 M. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti(SO4) to which N-BPHA was added. I.R. spectrometry oft the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence on the rutile surface of the same compound. The absorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U.V. technique. A hypothesis for the mechanism of adsorption of N-BPHA on rutile is suggested.

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

Kaolin samples from Rio Capim resources were treated in conventional and superconducting magnetic separators to study the main variables that influence the color removal process. Coating clays and delaminated clay were tested. Retention time (or pulp injection velocity), magnetic field intensity and matrix type were the&apos; variables studied. The feed brightness ranged from 84.7 to 87.6 % ISO for the coating clays and from 80.7 to 85.4 % ISO for the delaminated clay. The results showed unleached brightness values higher than 88 % ISO for coating products and higher than 87 % ISO for the delaminated product, using a conventional magnetic separator with an applied field of 1.5 to 2.0 Tesla. With a maximum field intensity in the superconducting machine of 5.0 Tesla, unleached brightness values higher than 88.5 % ISO for both coating and delaminated clays were attained.

Currently, empirical models are used for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of capacity, cut size (d50,c), water split and partition curve. These models, for example those of Lynch and Plitt, have been developed and checked for hydro cyclones with diameters larger than four inches. For smaller diameter hydrocyclones little empirical modelling has been done. This paper reports extended experimental research on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models has been checked and their accuracy compared. Modifications of the existing models equations are proposed, improving their predictive capability for the small cyclones performance.

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

"Biodegradation of sodium isopropyl xanthate using two types of bacterial strains, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas putida, is demonstrated. At concentrations higher than 50 mg/L, the presence of xanthate in the growth medium resulted in bacterial toxicity, retarding growth kinetics. Adaptation through serial subculturing in the presence of higher xanthate concentrations resulted in the development of xanthate-tolerant bacterial strains. Stress proteins secreted by bacterial cells grown in the presence of xanthate were isolated. Bacterial cells could utilize xanthate as a growth substrate, degrading xanthate species in the process. Acidic metabolic products generated by bacterial metabolism promoted efficient xanthate decomposition. Probable mechanisms for the biodegradation of isopropyl xanthate are illustrated.IntroductionDifferent types of alkyl xanthates (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl, etc.) have been used as flotation collectors in the concentration of sulfidic ores for several decades. Large quantities of waste water and xanthate-containing effluents are generated by ore flotation processes, posing considerable environmental challenges. Billions of cubic meters of such process waste waters are produced annually across the world, most of which are discharged to the environment, often without any treatment. Leakages and accidental release of xanthate reagents from manufacturing plants and during transportation and storage can also contaminate the environment. Residual concentrations of xanthate reagents are encountered in waste effluent, which are found to be toxic to aquatic life and unfit for human consumption (Harris, 1984; Okibe and Johnson, 2002). Further, direct recycling of such waste waters for plant operations can compromise water quality standards required for process operations. The presence of residual xanthate in recycled waters from flotation plants deleteriously influences flotation processes. Xanthate can be easily decomposed at low pH values; however, CS2, which is more toxic, will be produced by the acidification of neutral and mildly alkaline xanthate-containing solutions. Physico-chemical methods such as flocculation, chemical oxidation and decomposition and physical adsorption used to remove residual collector reagents from mill process waters are often expensive and not environment-friendly (Oliveira and Rubio, 2009; Cheng et al., 2012; Molina et al., 2013,)."

Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn&apos;t make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here&apos;s why: • 20% of today&apos;s high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today&apos;s fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today&apos;s sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I&apos;m talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today&apos;s graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. "In this study, the interaction between magnetite and the additive olivine was studied after oxidation as well as after isothermal reduction at temperatures in the 500º-1,300º C range. In the olivine sample, the forsteritic olivine particles react partly during the oxidation pretreatment to form magnesioferrite and vitreous silica along the particle corona. This breakdown of the olivine particles during oxidation liberates magnesium from the particles, which do not react until temperatures of above 1,150° C in reducing atmosphere. When the hematite in the sample is reduced, and when the temperature is high enough to allow solid-state diffusion at ~800º C, the magnesium of the magnesioferrite redistributes, so that the magnesium concentration approaches the same level throughout the iron oxide structure. For magnetite, this did not occur until 800° C. At 1,000° C, this magnesium reacts further with the silica in the glassy slag phase, which crystallizes into fayalitic olivine. At this temperature, the magnesium has diffused over distances of more than 600 µm from large olivine particles after 2 hrs reduction. From this point, the primary slag phase in the pellet, until melting, is solid fayalite. Upon reduction to metal, the metallization front concentrates the MgO in the remaining wustite, which can lead to MgO levels of up to 10 mole% locally. The melting point of the fayalite is raised from 1,145º C to a melting range of 1,238-1,264º C due to the MgO increase, as estimated based on phase diagrams, which were adapted to the pellets tested. Much of the olivine that remained unaltered in the oxidation process will be encapsulated by iron before the particles begin to dissolve in reducing conditions and, therefore, plays no role in the reduction before final melting of the particles occurs.IntroductionEnvironmental concerns have placed increasing pressure on the CO2-intensive iron and steel industries to further optimize operation toward higher productivity and more efficient use of reducing agents. At the same time, high demand for iron ore has caused new iron ores with lower grades and more complex chemistries to be taken into production. In Scandinavia, the main iron-bearing material is magnetite-based pellets with olivine, which allow operation with very low slag volumes and, hence, lower fuel rate ( Slagnes and Sundqvist Ökvist, 2008; Hallin et al., 1994). Both the MgO and SiO2 of the olivine, as well as the elements of the gangue of the ore, i.e., Si, Mg, Ca, Al and alkali, interact with the iron oxides to give the finished pellet product its final properties in the blast furnace. Tailoring the additive mix to be used for a certain iron ore for optimal product properties, therefore, requires detailed knowledge of the mechanisms by which these elements dissolve and react in the pellet."
