These projects include the Kumtor Project, the Kubaka Gold Project, the Kazgold Project, the Aginskoe Project and the Jerooy Project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. In this paper, Kilborn will discuss our experience in the CIS and share some insight into project development in this geographic region.

During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

Areas where additional background information is needed for assessment of the environmental impact of trace element emissions from coal gasification are identified.

The Hansen orebody is a large (1 2 million kg U3O8, 0.08% U3O8 average grade) sandstone-type uranium deposit in the Eocene Echo Park Formation of central Colorado. The deposit occurs in carbonaceous braided-stream sandstones that are part of a wet-alluvial-fan complex that prograded eastward across a narrow strike-slip basin. The Echo Park basin is one of a series of basins that formed along the east side of the Colorado Plateau as it was translated northward during the Eocene culmination of the Laramide orogeny. The valleys of east- and southeast- flowing perennial streams, whose courses were transected by the subsiding Echo Park basin, were filled with permeable volcanic and sedimentary rocks during construction of the Oligocene Thirtynine Mile volcanic field. These paleovalleys funneled large volumes of uranium-bearing ground waters through the braided-stream facies of the wet alluvial fan. Uplift of a basement horst downfan from the Hansen orebody reduced transmissivity and helped maintain a reducing environment in the Hansen area; this later became an important factor in preservation of the Hansen orebody. The horst also deflected uranium- bearing ground waters upward into the Oligocene Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate where they formed the Picnic Tree orebody (1.1 million kg U3O8, 0.09% U3O8 average grade) in an altered ash-fall tuff that is essentially barren above the Hansen orebody. Several potential source rocks for uranium are present and range in age from Proterozoic quartz monzonites of Silver Plume age to lower and upper Oligocene ash-flow and ash-fall tuffs. Uranium may have been contributed to the Hansen orebody several times from different sources. Uranium and thorium analyses of ash-flow tuffs indicate that ample uranium was released during cooling and ground-water leaching to form several Hansen orebodies. The host sandstones are conspicuously altered, and their initial high permeability has been greatly reduced by precipitation of intergranular cements, especially clays and opal C-T. The alteration and cementation mineral assemblages and the chemical composition of stagnant ground waters recovered from pump tests indicate that uranium deposition occurred under alkaline, reducing conditions preceded and/or accompanied by bacterial production of framboidal pyrite.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from both abandoned surface and underground mines is a serious problem. The flow of water and changes in quality over time from abandoned mines is important in determining remediation strategies. Acid mine drainage from surface mines is estimated to last for 10-20 years, while estimates of acid drainage from underground mines vary from 10- 100s of years. Fifteen underground mine discharges in West Virginia were studied to compare water quality changes between 1968 and 1999 to see if our data are consistent with other studies. Each of the discharges were categorized into one of three groups: undisturbed since 1968, affected by surface mining since 1968, and reclaimed. Comparing water quality between 1968 and 1999, the discharges in the undisturbed category showed a 35 to 95% improvement in acid concentration and a 40 to 99% reduction in iron concentration. The discharges affected by surface mining showed the most dramatic improvement. For acidity, iron, and aluminum, the percent improvements were all above 44%, and in most cases in the 70 to 99% range. In the reclaimed category, one of the four discharges declined in water quality. Discharge 82 showed a 76% increase in acidity, and iron and aluminum concentrations worsened by 58 and 96%. However, discharges 15 and 74 improved in water quality with a 94% acid load improvement and a 95% iron load improvement at both sites.

A laboratory method for the simulation of in-situ leaching of uranium was developed under contract to the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines. Simulation tests using sulfuric acid, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate as reagents and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant were carried out with representative ores from Texas and Wyoming. The tests not only yielded recovery rates of uranium and permeability changes, but also qualitative inferences on the chemical and physical phenomena which occur underground. Leaching with basic solutions was found to be kinetic constrained and with acid solutions, equilibrium constrained. The rapid permeability changes observed when leach solutions were introduced, were probably caused by gas blockages in the packing. Precipitation of calcite or gypsum and the reaction of clay to leach solutions had slow and gradual effect on the packing permeabilities.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. Nature- Equilibrium (physical, chemical and biological)"

INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

A metallurgical/flux is a substance that is added to combine with gangue (unwanted minerals) during ore smelting, with impurities in a molten metal, or with other additives in metal refining processes to form a slag that can be separated from the metal. Because slags are immiscible with the metallic melt and are of lower density, a separation of the slag and metal occurs if the viscosity and surface tension are of the proper values. The chemistries of slags are adjusted to provide the proper melting point, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, specific heat, density, or chemical properties to effect the desired task. In addition to absorbing impurities from the metal, the purposes of the slag are to thermally insulate the metal bath, protect the molten metal from the atmosphere, and control the chemical potential of the system. Several excellent references on slags and metallurgical fluxes are available (Boynton, 1980, Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985, Turkdogan, 1983, Rosenqvist, 1974, Fine and Gaskell, 1984). The function of the slag might vary at different stages within a process prior to final melting. For example, the slag composition and behavior will change as materials descend in the iron blast furnace, or as they melt in the early stages of formation of steel- making slags. Selection of the chemistry for a slag might be influenced by factors outside the primary function as when blast furnace slags are used to make cement, rock wool insulation, or fertilizer supplements. Sometimes slags contain a sufficient amount of valuable recoverable elements to be sold as raw materials for other processes. Fluxes are often referred to as acid, basic, or neutral. Acid fluxes are those that generally form acids in water and bases are those that would generally form bases in water. Typical acid fluxes are silica, alumina, and phosphorus, although alumina can function as either an acid or base. Typical basic fluxes are lime and magnesia. Fluorspar, or calcium fluoride, is a neutral substance because it can be viewed as the reaction product of a base and an acid. The degree of acidity (ratio of acids to bases) or basicity (ratio of bases to acids) is often specified to characterize the slag chemistry for a particular system. The system might also be referred to as acid or basic depending on the choice of slag, for example, basic steelmaking uses slags with more bases (lime and magnesia) than acids (silica and alumina). Many forms of minerals and compounds have been used as fluxes depending on the process requirements, availability, costs, requirements for recycling of intermediate products, and environmental concerns. Because slags are most often mixtures of oxides and silicates, fluxes are usually oxides, carbonates (which decompose to oxides) and silicates. Slags comprising phosphates, borates, sulfides, carbides, or halides have also been used (Rosenqvist, 1974, Moore, 1981, Szekely et al., 1989). In ironmaking and steelmaking, some acidic components are sometimes added. In nonferrous processes slags and fluxes are acidic with silica as the primary component, and although the use of basic flux such as limestone or lime is not extensive, some amount is used to modify slag properties and some refining slags are lime based. The production of iron is accomplished by smelting of ores, pellets, and sinter in blast furnaces with subsequent refining of molten iron and scrap in oxygen-blown processes. The electric furnace is used to make steel, stainless steels, ferroalloys, and special alloys, whereas ferromanganese is often made in blast furnaces. Fluxes are used in all of these processes, and either limestone or lime is the major flux component with some dolomite, dolomitic lime, silica, alumina, and fluorspar being used. In ironmaking, the flux is added either by direct charging or through sinter and fluxed pellets. In steel refining by the basic oxygen process, flux is added as lime and dolomitic lime that are either charged as lumps or injected as fines. Some small amount of limestone is sometimes used. Fluorspar is often added as lumps or mixed with other fine materials in briquettes. Alumina is sometimes added to blast furnaces either by direct charging of sized lumps or through sinter. Typical acid fluxes are sand, gravel, quartz rock, used silica brick, or raw siliceous ore (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Olivine, which is a magnesium-silicate mineral, has been added to iron blast furnaces to enhance removal of alkalis (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Alumina in the form of bauxite, aluminiferous clay, and recycled alumina brick has been used as flux. Alumina can function amphoterically as either an acid or base, for example it can form aluminum silicate in high silica slags or calcium aluminate in lime-bearing slags (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Limestone (calcium carbonate) and dolomite (magnesium-calcium carbonate), or fluxstones as they are sometimes called (Boynton, 1980), and their calcined forms, lime and dolomitic lime are the major basic fluxes. In the latter cases, the carbonates are de- composed in a kiln-type process to drive off carbon dioxide that might otherwise interfere with the subsequent smelting or refining process or require expensive forms of energy to effect the decomposition (e.g., by combustion of coke in the iron blast furnace). Limestone is considerably less expensive than lime because it is not calcined; however, lime is far more difficult to handle and reacts readily with water. Dolomite and dolomitic lime are used for their magnesia content. Fluorspar is a neutral flux often used as an additive in steel- making slags to improve fluidity, but it has also been used in combination with lime as a primary slag in electroslag refining (Duckworth and Hoyle, 1969). Fluorspar is available in several grades, with the lowest grade often used for steelmaking. The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc., and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the 'New Missouri Lead Belt' (See Figure 1). Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated about 1,100 feet below the surface at an elevation 270 feet above sea level, the flat lying sinuous ore bodies are up to 250 feet wide, 85 feet high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite, Access to the mine is through two 18'Ø concrete lined vertical shafts - one for servicing and the other for hoisting ore (See Figure 2). The mine is being worked by a modified room and pillar method using both rubber tired equipment and a sub-level rail haulage. Ore is broken from first pass headings, back and bench faces and transported by load-haul-dump units to ore passes located on 900 foot centers. The ore is pulled from chutes on the sublevel 90 feet below into 15 ton bottom dump cars and delivered in 10 car lots by a 15 ton diesel locomotive to a 42" gyratory crusher (See Figure 3). A recent innovation has been the introduction of two 50 ton trucks with plans to haul up to 60% of the ore on the mining level to an ore pass feeding directly to the primary crusher (See Figure 4). Ventilation raises up to 16'Ø, which were originally planned for 900 foot centers, are now driven on 450 foot centers.

This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads. The numerical computations have been based on the results of underground measurements of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads, which were performed for various geological and mining conditions and measured with the use of the endoscopic method with a digital camera. Having results of the underground investigations, trials of duplicating them by the Finite Element Method using software PHASE and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were performed. In order that the fractured zone predicted by the model-based computations closely simulate that measured underground, some selected parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were modified based on the earlier determined relations used for prediction of the roof-to-floor convergence in longwall gateroads. As a result, the model-based computations produce results very close to those obtained from the underground measurements. Determination of the fractured-rock zone around the mine roads is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads. The influence of the front abutment pressure causes the fractured rock zone around the roads to increase and results in an increase of support load. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of basic elements in the process of planning roof bolting for mine workings.

Ten small and intermediate-sized [11 GJ/hr to 264 GJ/hr (10,000 lb/hr steam to 250,000 lb/hr steam)] coal-fired boilers in the upper Midwest have each been tested on both a bituminous eastern coal and a subbituminous western coal. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting western subbituminous coal for eastern bituminous coal as a means of reducing the SO x emissions from this class of boiler and to demonstrate the feasibility of greatly expanded western coal utilization as a means of reducing the use of oil and gas. The scope of this study was such that the representative boiler types were tested on both eastern and western coal for a period of time sufficient to completely characterize their individual emission and operational characteristics.

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

An experimental hole-to-hole seismic probe system has been developed for use in coal measure geology as a means of determining the structural conditions of coal seams. The source probe produces a 500-joule electric arc discharge whose seismic wavelet has a spectrum in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range. Low compliance hydrophones contained in the source probe as well as in a separate seismic detector probe are matched to the frequency range of the source. Both probes are constructed with 5-72 cm diameter housings. The transducers in the probes are equipped with fluid-inflatable boots to permit operation in either wet or dry boreholes. Preliminary tests in vertical boreholes drilled 213 m apart in sedimentary rock formations show reliable operation and useful seismic propagation measurements along horizontal and oblique paths up to 232 m in length. Because the seismic wave- let has an accurately repeatable waveshape, multiple shots and signal averaging techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and extend the transmission distances.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet the long-term needs of a growing population. The tunnel will be 1,100 m long and 6.5 m in diameter (3,610 LF × 21.3 ft), constructed under Burrard Inlet between North Vancouver and Burnaby in British Columbia. It will be excavated through mixed ground conditions under high groundwater pressure, using a slurry TBM, between a 72 m (236 ft) deep shaft in soil and a 110 m (361 ft) deep shaft in rock. The completed tunnel will accommodate three large-diameter water mains that will be installed as part of the tunnel contract. This paper presents the project from design and contractor procurement, into the current construction stage describing some of the unique challenges encountered during the project development to date.

The Ortiz Mine is an open pit-heap leach gold operation in central New Mexico processing about 3,100 tonnes (3,400 short tons) per day. It is the initial mining property in the United States developed by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields, PLC. This paper discusses the evolution of the present mining and ore control procedures as adaptions to the characteristics of both the rock being mined and the orebody, and with respect to the fact that mining is done by a contractor.
