The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

Jetti Resources has developed a catalyst which overcomes the passivation of primary sulfides, enhancing the heap leach recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. It is important to emphasize that heap leaching of copper sulfides, whether with or without the Jetti catalyst, is a biooxidative process. We have demonstrated the efficacy of Jetti’s technology in bioreactors, with a chalcopyrite-dominant porphyry ore. In the presence of Jetti’s technology, optimal bioleaching conditions significantly increase copper extraction by 2.6 times that of the baseline.

"INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling is often related with special geotechnical risks. Typical causes are difficult (hydro)geological conditions, a very low overburden and the presence of critical and vulnerable (infra)structures in the influence zone of the construction (e.g. existing tunnels, roads and pavements, sewer pipes, gas and power lines, landmarked buildings, historic monuments). To manage these risks appropriately, an early detection and warning of unexpected behavior of the affected geotechnical objects ground and tunnel, as well as existing structures are mandatory. To accomplish this, the design and execution of a dense geotechnical monitoring program is of high importance. In more detail, this means specifying and performing a systematic and continuous acquisition, processing and analysis of monitoring data to support decision making. In recent years the development of new automatic sensors and (wireless) data transfer techniques and the general trend towards an automatic acquisition of monitoring data has led to an enormous increase of data production frequencies and volumes. In order to handle this data explosion efficiently, information systems and geo-databases have been developed and used successfully in many projects. They represent IT tools that support the different tasks of a given geotechnical monitoring program including data acquisition, transfer, check, processing, backup, analysis, distribution, reporting and, last but not least, alarming. Meanwhile, some tools already have developed the capability to connect to other theme-specific databases used in the project and, thus, serve as a central data management system for all kind of digital data produced. This makes possible the implementation of further useful functions and services supporting tunneling tasks such as machine control, tunnel simulation, geological prediction, process optimization, etc. where data from different engineering disciplines must be combined and processed in an integrated way. In the following chapters our aim is to describe how monitoring data management, geotechnical monitoring, alarming and reporting are organized and technically implemented at the metro project Cityringen in Copenhagen (Denmark). We want to highlight the specific role and tasks of the used tunnel information system in the project, and particularly inform on the most relevant challenges."

Barite Worldwide barite production for 1985 decreased 1.3%, while US barite production increased 1.4%, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The increase in US production is attributed to heavy demand for oil and gas drilling during the first quarter and an unrealized heavy expected demand in oil and gas markets for the last quarter. Nevada accounted for 82.1% of the 807 kt (890,000 st) of barite produced in the US last year, according to the Bureau. Other producing states were California, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, and Washington. In 1985, the US imported 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite and 64 kt (71,000 st) of ground barite. China led the way with 43.3% of the total. Imports from India accounted for 21.6%; Morocco, 15.5%; and Thailand, 5.6%. The 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite imported is an 18.8% increase over 1984. Apparent consumption of barite for 1985 was about 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st), a 15.7% increase from 1984. Due to very low drilling rig activity during the last quarter of 1985, actual consumption is probably less as crude barite inventories at mines and plants increased. According to the Bureau, 90% of barite consumed in 1985 was for the oil and gas market. Paints, rubber, glass, and other chemical uses consumed the other 10%. With the price of oil falling dramatically early in 1986, the outlook for oil and gas drilling looks to be significantly lower than 1985. This lower demand for barite, coupled with the high year-end inventories, should lower both imports and domestic production. Significant lower prices on imported barite are expected, especially from China, Morocco, and India. This also could further lower US production of barite this year.

The copper smelting process produces plenty of copper slag every year, which is a hazardous solid waste, but a secondary resource. In the present study, the extraction of copper, nickel, and cobalt from copper slag was investigated through the process of sulfation roasting–water leaching and the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching respectively. Compared with the process of sulfation roasting–water leaching, the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching is a better choice, which could not only get almost the same leaching of copper, nickel, and cobalt as the former process, but has a lower leaching of iron and aluminum. For the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching, the leaching of Cu, Ni, and Co reached up to 74.2%, 71.1%, and 69.6% respectively, under the optimal conditions including sulfation roasted with 80 wt% sulfuric acid addition at 200 °C for 60 min and sulfate decomposition roasted at 650 °C for 60 min, followed by water leached at 90 °C for 30min with a liquid–solid ratio of 2 ml/g. The leaching of Fe and Al was only 4.9% and 17.6%.

For decades, tunnels of all types have been a significant part of our infrastructure. In particular, water tunnels carry millions of gallons of fresh water every day to major metropolitan areas and surrounding communities. As a critical piece of public health infrastructure, it is important to inspect the condition of these tunnels regularly to ensure reliable and continuous operation. A specific challenge with water infrastructure is that it’s often difficult or impossible to shut down the system for long periods of time to perform the needed inspections. The latest method of tunnel condition assessment is the use of hybrid reality 3-D scan data. Photogrammetric and LiDAR based 3-D data ensure a reliable and objective view of tunnel conditions. The data can be used to support a detailed digital inspection including the compilation of databases that consist of a wide variety of deficiencies such as cracks and spalls within the structure. Mott MacDonald, a design engineer company worked closely with Dibit, used a 360-degree scanning system to collect high-resolution photogrammetric and LiDAR data on a recent project involving a water tunnel. The allows for full 360-degree coverage of the tunnel surface including a water covered invert. It operates at walking speed and ensures a fast and reliable data acquisition which can reduce the time of tunnel shutdowns. Several allocated inspection weeks can reduce to few days, with the final work product being a higher quality and more complete deliverable than traditional inspection methods would have provided. The true-color 3D-model has a photo resolution of 1 × 1 mm (0.039 × 0.039 inches) which makes cracks visible with a width of down to 0.3 mm (0.011 inches). The assessment of water tunnels, its technical challenges and the results of the 3D-tunnel inspection case study are illustrated and described in this publication.

"The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

Low-cost and environmentally friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and starch, have been used in the flotation of some sulfide and nonsulfide minerals. This paper discusses the fundamentals, current applications and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC and starch in minerals flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns.

A number of previous publications have attempted to provide the practicing ventilation engineer with simple guidelines on the optimal velocity to be used in mine openings. Some of these velocities were meant to be used in metal mining operations and some were meant for coal mining. A careful review of these publications reveals that the optimal velocities were determined based upon assumptions that are not existent today. As a result, they are not suitable for use in a modern coal mine. This paper takes a new look at this problem and determines a statistical relationship for optimal velocity that can be applied under both current and future conditions. The analysis performed here is based upon the determination of the optimal velocity for coal mine entries under variations in power cost, mining cost differential, airway friction factor, time value of money, airway lifespan, and quantity of air carried. A total of 8400 different conditions were analyzed for optimal velocity using computer calculation of the capital and operating cost values. Using the individual values of the optimal velocity derived in the calculations, a linear regression equation was fitted to the data to relate the optimal velocity to the other six variables outlined above. This regression relationship allows the ventilation engineer to make an easy, rapid determination of the optimal velocity.

Lime has been produced for many centuries. The simple pot kiln was one of the first devices used in this process. It was constructed of stone often on the side of a hill to reduce construction efforts and provide easy access to the top for feeding of limestone. It was fired from below with wood and coal. The pot kiln was very small and operated on the batch principle. The kiln being cooled between each batch, the fuel consumption was horrendous. The lime quality was poor with perhaps only one half of a batch being lime of suitable quality. Of the remaining half one part would be over burned and another part underburned. For centuries the lime burning technique was improved at a barely recognizable rate. One of the first major steps forward was the introduction of the continuous process vertical lime kiln. Although at first crudely constructed, the kiln had a refractory lining. It was charged with alternate layers of limestone and solid fuel usually in the form of coke. Continuous mode of operation, larger unit size and better heat distribution resulted in greatly improved fuel economy. However, quality of lime produced still left much to be desired. One problem was contamination by ashes from solid fuel.

Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. "The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

Canada produces close to 42 million tonnes of coal per annum of which some 38 million tonnes is produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, produce 31 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5 m to over 8 m. This paper reviews the surface mining methods used to extract such seams. The difficulties associated with steep seam and multiple seam mining of friable coal resulting in lower coal recovery, high dilution and the problem of cleaning fine coal in the wash plant have been highlighted.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.

Manganese ore bodies of Banswara Mn belt were classified into stratiform and stratabound types, based on their mode of occurrence, distribution, and their chemical characters. These ore bodies generally composed of braunite, pyrolusite, cryptomelane/ psilomelane, wad, etc. The stratiform-type Mn ore bodies are conformable with the associated host rocks (Mn phyllite, etc.) and occurred in the form of layers, bands, etc., which are variable in their shape and size. These ore bodies are also strongly folded with the enclosing host rocks. The others, which are stratabound-type Mn ore bodies, also showed an intimate association with the associated host rocks. These types of ore bodies occurred in thin layers, pockets, lenses, stringers, etc. The classified ore bodies are confined with Kalinjara formation of Aravalli Supergroup of Paleoproterozoic age. The ore bodies are structurally controlled and well associated with phyllite, schist, limestone, quartzite, etc. The stratiform-type ore bodies constitute a marginal to low Mn grade and are also characterized by lower Mn content (26.19–39.24%) along with the Mn/Fe ratio of 7.16–12.23, while the stratabound-type Mn ore bodies are rich in Mn (35.92–49.64%) along with the higher Mn/Fe ratio of 14.15–23.97. However, the poor Mn grade along with high siliceous impurities of Banswara Mn deposits is subjected to them for intermittent mining activities in the past and, consequently, did not attract the scientific and industrial community for the evaluation of these resources. Therefore, the authors attempted this study in a scientific and systematic manner (mode of occurrence/distribution and possible methods for evaluation/exploration) to evaluate the potential of existed and newer Mn deposit resources in the Banswara Mn belt. The whole findings would be very much helpful for exploration/ mining geologist along with other concerned, to completely evaluate these Mn deposits in the future.
